Julia Gillard Becomes Australia’s First Female PM

In Australia, Julia Gillard has become the nation’s first female prime
minister.

Julia Gillard: "I, Julia Eileen Gillard, do solemnly and sincerely
affirm and declare that I will well and serve the Commonwealth of
Australia, her land and her people, in the office of prime minister."

Julia Gillard rose to power after the Labor Party dumped Prime Minister
Kevin Rudd ahead of the expected elections in October.
