Spill Could Be Worse in Gulf History; House Expands Damages for Victims’ Families

Taking the high end of government estimates at 140 million gallons, the
BP oil spill is now the largest to hit the Gulf, surpassing the
1979-1980 Ixtoc I spill off Mexico. The House meanwhile has passed the
first major piece of legislation related to the disaster. On Thursday,
the House voted to expand the ability of surviving family members to
seek damages for the eleven deaths in the Deepwater Horizon rig
explosion.
