California Senate Passes Single-Payer Bill
------------------------------------------



In California, the state Senate has voted to establish a statewide
single-payer health care system. The measure was approved by a vote of
22 to 14. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenneger has vowed to veto
the bill. Advocates say around 60 percent of Californians support a
single-payer system. The bill now goes before the state Assembly.
