December 23, 2010 U.N.: 173 Have Died in Ivory Coast ----------------------------------- In news from Ivory Coast, the United Nations reports 173 people have been killed over the past week in political violence stemming from last month's disputed election. In addition, the U.N. reports it has substantiated at least 90 cases of torture or ill treatment. Opposition leader Alassane Ouattara has been widely recognized as the winner of the election, but Ivory Coast president Laurent Gbagbo has refused to step down. On Wednesday, a key backer of Ouattara called on the international community to use force to oust Gbagbo. .
