September 16, 2009 Military Chief Expects Troop Increase in Afghanistan ---------------------------------------------------- The nation’s top military officer told Congress Tuesday the US will likely need more troops in Afghanistan. Admiral Mike Mullen, the chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, made the comments in testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee. Admiral Mike Mullen: “Now I do not know exactly what additional resources General Mc Chrystal may ask for, and I do not know what ratio of training to combat units he really needs. We’ll get to all of that in the coming weeks. But I do believe that, having heard his views and having great confidence in his leadership, a properly resourced counterinsurgency probably means more forces and, without question, more time and more commitment to the protection of the Afghan people and to the development of good governance.” .
