House Finance Panel Backs Consumer Protection Agency

On Capitol Hill, the House Financial Services Committee has approved a
measure that would create the US Consumer Financial Protection Agency.
The White House-backed agency would monitor the products that banks and
other institutions sell to consumers, including subprime loans. The
finance industry has spent tens of millions of dollars on lobbying and
advertisements trying to derail the proposal.
