October 16, 2009 Runoff Election May Be Held in Afghanistan ------------------------------------------ Afghan officials say the country will likely hold a runoff election after an investigation of allegedly fraudulent ballots reduced President Hamid Karzai’s portion of the vote to about 47 percent. Preliminary results by Afghanistan’s Independent Election Commission had given Karzai over 54 percent of the vote. A runoff would pit Karzai against his closest challenger, Abdullah Abdullah. .
