October 16, 2009 Social Security Recipients Will Receive No Cost of Living Increase in 2010 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The federal government announced Thursday there will be no cost of living increase for more than 50 million Social Security recipients next year. This marks the first year without a raise since automatic adjustments were adopted in 1975. By law, the adjustments are pegged to inflation, which is negative this year because of lower energy costs. To soften the blow, the White House plans to send $250 checks to people who receive Social Security and Social Security Income benefits. .
