Federal Authorities Approve Gun Sales to People on Terrorist Watch List

The National Rifle Association is opposing a proposed bill that would
block gun sales to people on the government’s terrorist watch list.
Democratic Senator Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey plans to introduce the
bill today. A new government study found people on the government’s
terrorist watch list have tried to buy guns nearly 1,000 times in the
last five years. Federal authorities cleared the purchases 90 percent of
the time, because they had no legal way to stop them. Under current
federal law, people named on the terrorist watch list can be barred from
boarding an airplane or getting a visa, but they cannot be stopped from
buying a gun.
