January 6, 2009 Bush to Create World’s Largest Marine Protection Area ----------------------------------------------------- President Bush is set to announce the creation of the world’s largest marine protection area. Under the plan, 195,000 square miles in the Pacific Ocean will be preserved as marine national monuments. The areas include the Mariana Trench and northern Mariana Islands, the Rose Atoll in American Samoa and a chain of remote islands in the Central Pacific. Under the plan, Bush will sharply restrict oil and gas exploration and commercial fishing in the protected areas. .
