February 2, 2009 Daschle Questioned Over Tax Problems ------------------------------------ Tom Daschle’s confirmation as secretary of Health and Human Services is now in doubt after revelations that the former Senate majority leader failed to pay $128,000 in back taxes until after he was nominated for the post. Daschle also failed to report $83,000 in consulting income and overstated the size of some charitable deductions. Questions are also being raised about Daschle’s close ties to healthcare firms. In recent years, Daschle was paid tens of thousands of dollars to give speeches before the Health Industry Distributors Association, the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy and America’s Health Insurance Plans. .
