South Africa Boosts AIDS Treatment for Pregnant Women

South Africa has announced plans to expand access to AIDS treatment and
prevention for pregnant women. The changes conform with World Health
Organization guidelines that call for pregnant women with HIV to be
given drugs earlier in their pregnancy. The treatment of HIV-infected
babies is expected to improve childhood mortality in South Africa. The
announcement came on World AIDS Day. It marks a shift for the South
African government, which has been criticized for its treatment efforts.
