It has a number of effects (modules) similar to those in commercial screen savers. No sound effects though. Requires MultiFinder or System 7. Replaces version 2.4 in the archives. Technical Philosophy Patching out half of the Macintosh operating system for some silly little utility such as a screen saver is really a crime. MultiFinder is perfectly capable of doing this task for you in a clean way. This code was written to be clean and follow as many rules as I was able. The two minor things I do that aren't totally perfect are use of the _Launch trap for starting the fade process, and some window manager fiddling to get the menu bar to be erased. The cleaner you are, the more systems your program will run on and the less time you will spend mucking with it to make it run in the future. (I spend my time mucking with this to make it more fun and better, not to fix things because of system revs). Remember, it's much more fun to add features than to fix bugs! BinHEX'd Compact Pro archive #### BINHEX game/mech-zone.hqx **** Date: Mon, 9 Sep 91 20:58:17 -0400 From: "Tobish E Smith" Subject: Mech Zone "Mech Zone: Robot Battle II" is a huge departure from the original Robot Battle program, incorporating as many user requests as a reasonable amount of time would allow. A partial list of improvements follows, but first, a word of introduction for those folks who don't know what Robot Battle is. Robot Battle is Yet Another Robot Programming Game. Using an easy-to- understand language, users create programs which instruct robots how to act. These programs are then loaded into robots and you watch as the huge steel gladiators slug it out, firing lasers, launching missiles, killing scattered humans, and basically being as nasty as they're programmed to be. The first version of Robot Battle was released about six months ago, and represented our first large-scale Mac programming effort. As such, it was pretty flaky (read as: buggy) and wasn't quite as robust as the other robot programming game out at the time, RoboWar. However, enough users showed their support for our game that we decided to go big guns and rework the program. We have. During our revamping period, two new robot programming games have emerged: 'Bot and Robot Warrior. The market's getting a bit saturated, but that's good for the end user, since competition keeps us all on our toes. Of course, the potential user has to decide which one of these four programs to actually use... Major revisions/additions to Mech Zone: * Up to eight robots can compete at once * Robots can be on one of 4 teams, or compete as individuals * A communications protocol allows teammates to exchange data during battle * The robot graphics have been redone: robot movement is now animated (you can see their feet move), and you can watch their heads turn as they scan the barren terrain for their prey * Three-channel sound (with system 6.0.5 or greater) for heightened realism. Hear the air sizzle as lasers zap! Listen to the whirr of robots' servos as they walk! Cringe (or rejoice) at the sound of expiring humans! * Full-color battlefield (under System 7 only) * Extensive improvements to RIPPLE, the Robot Battle language, including floating-point math, trig functions, structured code, and more. All Robot Battle 1.1 robots are completely compatible with Mech Zone. * Compiled robot code - you only have to wait through the compilation process once for each robot. The compiled code is saved for quick loading of robots. * An Equipment calculator, for easily determining how much equipment a robot can carry. * Hundreds of bug fixes and rule enhancements. * A head-bangin', industrial intro tune, guaranteed to wake the neighbors. #### INFO-MAC digest/infomacv9-212.txt **** Today's Topics: [*] GIFConverter 2.2.8->2.2.9 Update [*] MacPost-Client-US-10b5 [*] Madness [*] ProSwitch 1.2 A wish list.... It includes some new important features like the drawing of the constellations or an enhanced way to localize stars (see bellow a description of the differences with the previous version). If you don't know what is MacAstro, this is a small description of the program : MacAstro 1.5 is a program for astronomy lovers to calculate the appearance of the sky at any time and any point on earth. It displays the position of the 8 major planets, the Sun, the Moon, and 2500 brightest astronomical objects (stars and Messier's objects). These are the main features of the program : o Full Macintosh interface. o Background calculations. o Displays in color the position of the objects of the Solar System (8 planets + Sun + Moon) and displays the position of the 2500 brightest stars in the sky, according to the date and place of the observation. o Displays the constellations. o Displays the ephemeris of any of the 2510 objects : - rising/setting/culmination, - right ascension/declination, - azimuth/altitude, - visual magnitude and diameter, and allows to save it to a text file for the planets, the Sun and the Moon. o Displays and exports a picture of the phase of the Moon. o Displays and exports a picture of Jupiter and Saturn's satellites position. o Displays the sidereal time. o "Planetarium" mode : an animation refreshes regularly the appearance of the sky (can turn in background under MultiFinder). o Editable list of most commonly used places of observation, and possibility to use the location coordinates stored in the PRAM. o Requires a Macintosh Plus, Classic, or larger and a system 6.0 or later. Difference between the versions 1.5 and 1.4 of MacAstro : o Displays the constellations, o "AutoFind," which allows you to find the information about a star just by pointing it, o Reads the location (latitude and longitude) stored in the PRAM memory of the Macintosh, o Complete control of the size of the stars according to their magnitudes, o Draws up to 2500 stars (catalog provided). Just click the mouse button anywhere while holding down a (user-specified) combination of modifier keys, and a popup menu appears allowing you to change: 1. The bit depth of the screen (number of colours or greys), and 2. Whether the monitor is set to colour or grey-scale. StackDetective* is fully dedicated to analyzing HyperCard stacks. It is capable of making a complete analysis & breakdown of all the objects in a stack, optionally making a list of all attached scripts. Complete means here that every object is listed with all its properties (like its name, location, ICON [for its button], style, etc), including the new ones introduced with HyperCard version 2. You can also get a list of all global variables a stack declares, any resources it contains or a fully annotated text-dump of all text from the background and card fields. StackDetective* uses two custom menus for most of its actions and funtions, the StackDetective* and DetectiveEdit menus. About This Version This is the first international release of StackDetective*. All earlier versions were done in Dutch, and distributed only through local bulletin boards. It is a fully HyperCard version 2 compatible stack, and meant to work on stacks created with any version of HyperCard; from 1.0.1 to 2.0v2. (I have not tried HyperCard version 2.1 yet, but I doubt it will give you any trouble). HyperCard 2.0v2 has no problem opening stacks not yet converted to the new file format, so neither has StackDetective*. The only problem you might run into is when you want to edit the script of a nonPconverted stack. To do this you have to convert it first to the new HyperCard 2 stack format. #### BINHEX lang/think-c-cmarker.hqx **** Date: Tue, 3 Sep 91 01:31:08 -0700 From: Stuart Cheshire Subject: CMarker CMarker 0.6b1 I am posting this on behalf of the friend of mine in England who wrote it. This is an invaluable utility for Think C. It places a little button next to the close box in the title bar of each source file window, and when you click on it, a menu of all the functions in the file drops down. By selecting a name from the menu, it will automatically move to that function. It makes it incredibly quick to find your way around source files, especially large ones. The other useful feature it has is to do with comments. C comments do not nest, so if you have a block of C full of comments, and you want to comment out the whole block, then just naively putting comment marks at the beginning and the end of the block will not work. CMarker allows you to select a block of text, choose the 'Comment' command from the menu, and it will comment the whole block, in a way so that the embedded comments don't mess it up. When you later select the same block again, the menu option changes to 'UnComment' and it will reverse the changes it made. This is all it does, but it does it job extremely well. It is unobtrusive, reliable, and doesn't take much memory. I like it because it does what I want, and does it well, instead of doing 100 things poorly, which seems to be the case with so many utilities these days. This utility has been tested successfully with System 6.0.x and System 7. It was written for THINK C 4, but works fine with the new THINK C 5. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- #### BINHEX comm/macpost-server-10b5.hqx **** Date: Sat, 31 Aug 91 22:15:42 +0200 From: Roland M}nsson LDC Subject: MacPost-Server-10b5.cpt.hqx About MacPost 1.0b5 (Aug. 31, 1990) =================================== MacPost is an electronic mail system for the Apple Macintosh. It gives Mac users access to internet mail directly from the desktop. The client is very easy to use, and the server should be relatively easy to setup for anyone somewhat experienced with Macs, AppleTalk, tcp/ip, and e-mail. The client is an ordinary Macintosh application. It is used to send and receive electronic mail. The user is automatically notified when a new mail arrives, regardless of what application (s)he is using. Domain addresses are used. There is a simple Address Book that allows the user to pick a name from a list, and send the mail to the associated address. Translation between Mac-ascii and seven bit ascii works automatically in both directions. BinHex enclosures are supported. Any Mac with System 6.0 or later (incl. 7.0) can use MacPost. The MacPost server requires a dedicated Mac with 2MB RAM, hard disk, ethernet card, and MacTCP. This release is reasonably stable. We are not aware of any major bugs in it. Later this year we will make version 1.0 final available. Shortly after that, we will make the sources available as well (for any non-commercial use). If you are interested in adding features to MacPost, mail me, and I may send the current sources (THINK C). The dinosaurs icons I've had around since ColorFinder days, switching them to sys 7 style caused some color changes - they used to look better. For the astronmers in the audience, I know the comet tail is pointing the wrong way, but it looks better the way it is. Does everyone get the Nemesis reference? Some students wrote this as a project in a software engineering class. This file was compressed with Compact Pro. Here are some features of the program. - stand alone Macintosh application with a nice interface. - works with any ascii text file, so it's compatible with Textures and OzTeX files. - works with System 7. With the proliferation of System 7 (or MultiFinder if you're using System 6), the fact that it's a stand alone application should not present an inconvenience. - comes with a dictionary (that's why it's large). - extensive on-line help. - will suggest corrections to a misspelled word. - double clicking on a suggestion enters it into the "Change To:" box. - includes an option to ignore words that are in uppercase letters. (Some other options too.) - program displays context of misspelled word. - you can tell it to ignore a word, and it will not report the word as misspelled for the remainder of the document. - statistics on the number of words checked, flagged, and corrected. Known problems: - Despite the existence of a button and menu items for letting the user add a word to a user defined dictionary, this feature doesn't work. This is safe because the items are disabled. - the program is more of a LaTeX spelling checker than a plain TeX spelling checker. That is, it's better at ignoring LaTeX commands. - It doesn't ignore all math commands. - after correcting a word, the display does not update to show the correction, even though the correction has been entered into the document. - the students who wrote this (check out the "About Excalibur..." dialog box to see them) have graduated. I'm not sure of the probability of getting bug fixes. Please send me any bug reports, comments, and suggestions. One of the students has expressed interest in continuing work on this program, although nothing has happened yet. Perhaps if there are enough encouraging responses, he will continue the work. It allows you the flexability to read an individual article or read them sequentially if you desire. The source is self documenting and you are free to modify and use it as you see fit. I would like to centralize its configuration though. So, if you enjoy this program but would like to see some extra features added, send me email with your suggestions and maybe I will incorporate them and make another release. The source has only been tested on a Sun, but I beleive it is portable enough to require little modification (if any), on most C and UNIX platforms. Most are Word4 files, printable as is; a few are plaintext. Purists may strip. I had requested help in this venue for how to modify the traditional DRAFT/COPY stamp to auto-append a file's name. File "A Doc Titled..." does that with options for chooser/username, time/date stamps, etc. Thanks go to Dan.D.Lunderville@uwrf.edu, Margaret_Sharon@cc.sfu.ca, and especially to Peter J Outteridge (pjo@kowande.bu.oz.au) for his help and to Joel Ness (jness@ub.d.umn.edu) for preserving original source in Walter Smith's code (wrs@apple.com) from comp.sys.mac which does all the work in parsing the $jobname string to grab a file name. Excuse my slowness in posting your information back up again. Two nice fractals are included and various text effects from sources you may already know about. Credit is also due to various Word Manuals, Dan Judd@stolaf.edu and the book Learning PostScript: A Visual Approach. There are now 3 types of files to work with: 1. Default Icons--Paste these into your Finder Prefs file with ResEdit. Make a copy of the "Finder Prefs" in the "Preferences" folder by dragging it to the desktop while holding down on the option key. Open "Default Icons" and the copy of the "Finder Prefs", and paste all the new icons in. Option-Move the original "Finder Prefs" to the trash and place the modified one in. 2. Custom Icons--The icons can be pasted onto any file, folder, or disk running under System 7. They all have color icons and small icon equivalents. This set contains all of the previous custom icons I've released. 3. More Custom Icons--These are additional color icons, designed after the first set, and in the format that you are used to. As I post more icons, they will be in this format (until I get around to re-grouping them). Note: Some icons are very dependent on the color, and may only look good in 8-bit color (256 colors). If you have already downloaded all of the original 10 sets that I have created, you wonUt need to re-download the second file. However, I have cleaned up the Default Icons, so you may want to download that file and replace your present icons. The third and additional files will be posted as I create them, and you will definitely want to get them.
