The following is a step-by-step sequence for RevRdist first-timers to help them get RevRdist running at all. Use it in conjunction with the RevRdist administrator's guide, the "Initial installation" section, starting about page 21. * I assume you have created a master folder on the server. If not, do this first. Its contents should be set by copying everything from a client hard disk to the master folder. For experimenting, it suffices to copy only the client System folder and one or two other top-level folders. * Manually mount the server volume on the client you are debugging with. Warning: be sure you have this client's files backed up. It is very easy to have RevRdist delete them all. You should also have a bootable floppy, in case the client's System folder gets messed up. * Start an unconfigured RevRdist, with no preferences file. (In this case, 'unconfigured' means it has the "Echo control file as read", "List only, don't do", "Verbose", and "Flags dialog" flags checked and all others cleared.) Click Okay to any warning about a missing or corrupt prefs file. * On the Preferences window, set the Master folder. Nothing else matters for now. Click on Go. If RevRdist complains that it cannot find the master folder, then you haven't typed its name correctly. You can Copy the volume or folder names while in Finder and switch back to RevRdist and Paste them into the path you're building. This makes sure you are spelling them correctly. * Once you get the master folder name correct, work on getting the Distribution file name correct. Again, it's a matter of making sure you have each part of the path correct, letting RevRdist tell you when it is unhappy. * Save this preferences file. * Now, its time to debug the Distribution file. This is mostly a matter of trial and error, running RevRdist and watching the Activity window. If you just made the master folder from this client, then RevRdist should not find much to do. You should examine everything RevRdist proposes to do to make sure you understand why it is doing it. If you are running version 1.5 of RevRdist, check the "RevRdist log" file, either in the same folder as RevRdist, in the Preferences folder, or possibly in your "Junk" folder. * Now, you're ready to fill out the rest of the Preferences information. Get to the Preferences window again. Switch back to the Finder and unmount the server volume. Use the Chooser to remount the volume, but carefully write down each piece of information as you select it: (Zone name, Server name, User name, Password). * Close the Chooser, unmount the volume again, and switch back to RevRdist. Type the information you wrote down into the Preferences and Save it. Click on Go and see if RevRdist can mount the volume. If not, you miscopied something. Unfortunately, you cannot use Copy and Paste here. * Set the other preferences ("Junk" folder, lifetimes, etc) how you want them, except set the update interval to 1 minute for now. * Save your final preferences file and quit RevRdist. Unmount the volume. Double-click on the preferences file. Leave the flags alone and just press Go when you get to the Preferences window. If RevRdist has trouble with the volume, distribution file, etc, back up in this list and re-do things from the failure point. * Now, it's time to test automatic RevRdisting. Put a copy of RevRdist and the preferences file in the Startup Items folder. Make sure the prefs file is named "RevRdist prefs". * Double click on this copy of RevRdist. On the Flags dialog, set List only, Use prefs mod time, and Flags dialog. Make sure the other flags are not set. Push the Save button and then quit RevRdist. * Wait one minute (the update interval). Restart the Mac. * Check that the "Unattended" flag got set automatically. Let RevRdist continue. It should mount the volume and run (in list-only mode) with no problems. * Make a copy of your preferences file onto a floppy or the server. * Once this works, try it with the List only flag off. Pick up the pieces :-) That is, once you turn List only off, RevRdist will actually modify the files/folders on the client's hard disk. * Go back and set the update interval on the preferences to its correct value. Save the preferences file. * Start RevRdist again and set the flags the way you want. Save them. * Copy these versions of RevRdist and the preferences to the master folder. .
