--------------------------------------------------------------------------- Private dialin lines now available --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Enclosed is an informational blurb on the service, and a form to fill out and mail back to pvtlines@ucsd.edu. We'll set you up with a line and email you back the telephone number. This normally takes under two weeks, but it may take longer if we have no more lines or annex ports and have to order more equipment. We're still in the process of determining demand for this service. Right now, too, PacBell is running slow on line installation. We can do a monthly recharge to an index number, or you may set things up with personal funds by writing a check to the ICC for a starter amount of money (we'll decrement your 'account' each month until funds are gone). --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Private dialin lines now available To help people cope with the shortage of dialin lines, Network Operations is now offering private leased ports on our Annex multi-protocol terminal servers. The service will provide to each subscriber: * One or more private dialin modems with login restricted to a group of people specified by the subscriber. The service can look like a collection of individual phone numbers or a single number with several ports. Access to the ports will be guaranteed for as many individuals as * Modem technology current at the time of the lease with the possibility of upgrades as technology changes; today our choice is 14,400 bps error correcting modems with V.32bis, V.42bis and MNP4 and 5 from US Robotics, but we will attempt to use any technology that the leasor suggests and is willing to pay for. Leased ports will provide the same services that are available on the general public dialins, notably: * Telnet or Rlogin terminal access to campus machines. * Appletalk Remote Access (ARA) Appletalk access to campus machines. * Direct TCP/IP access to campus machines and the Internet using SLIP or PPP. * TN3270 access to the University's administrative systems. * TCP/IP numbers and names assigned either to the port itself or to the person who has logged in to the port so that dialed in workstations can be better integrated into the campus computing environment. For connections that use our standard equipment, we offer two different financing plans with nearly equivalent costs when considered over a one year period. For each port ordered: 1) Initial equipment purchase by the customer: $440 initial direct payment for hardware and phone line connection fee. $21 monthly fee. Under this plan, the modem is the customer's to take away upon termination of the arrangement. For six months following termination, the connection can be reestablished for cost by returning the working modem. There is no guarantee that the original number will be restored. 2) Lease purchase plan: No initial fee. $39 monthly fee. Here, equipment and installation are amortized over two years. After 24 payments, consecutive or not, this plan reverts to plan 1. The modem can be taken away by the customer for $9 * (24 - number of monthly fees paid). We also offer a third plan to accommodate requirements for technology that is unusual or too expensive for us to offer as part of our public service: 3) Modem supplied by customer. $250 direct payment for hardware and phone line connection fee. $50/hour configuration investigation as necessary. $21 monthly fee. If the customer supplies us with a modem that is probably compatible with our servers but not part of our existing type, we will attempt to create a working configuration for $50 per hour. If we find a working configuration, the modem will be installed for the $250 attachment equipment charge and an ongoing fee of $21 per month. The calling arrangements for these private lines can be either as single numbers each of which is used by one or more individuals who know the authorized accounts for the number or as several lines collected together under one "pilot" number that provides access to all of the lines in a group. In anycase, we can provide limited statistics about how lines are used. To arrange for this service, send a copy of the form below to pvtlines@ucsd.edu. Jim Madden Notes: These plans are all based on these underlying costs: Initial setup costs: Pac Bell phone line installation 90 Modem cost 190 Annex terminal server share 100 Misc connecting parts 35 Net Ops install charge 25 Monthly costs: Phone line lease 18/mo. Net Ops support charge 3/mo. If these numbers change substantially, the service pricing will have to change. To eliminate telephone time charges, we also offer private foreign exchange service that creates a number that appears to be local to a specific calling area away from the campus. This service will have the same inital setup costs as listed above but significantly higher monthly costs, as high as $90 per month, to account for higher line charges. Specific details of the latter charge can be worked out when we know the calling location. In addition, we are working to find alternate ways of providing remote calling numbers and higher speed services such as ISDN at reduced cost. As we do, we will make these services available for private use as well. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------cut here---------------------------------------- PRIVATE DIALIN LINE REQUEST FORM NAME: TELEPHONE NUMBER: ELECTRONIC MAIL ADDRESS: NETWORK USERNAMES you would like to be permitted to use this dialin line: PAYMENT OPTION YOU DESIRE (please specify either RECHARGE or CASH IN ADVANCE): PURCHASE PLAN YOU DESIRE (please specify either CUSTOMER EQUIPMENT PURCHASE, LEASE, or CUSTOMER MODEM SUPPLY): NUMBER OF LINES you would like (default 1): COMMENTS (if you have specified CUSTOMER MODEM SUPPLY, please be sure to tell us the details of your situation, including brand of modem, protocol, and speed): INDEX NUMBER if you have selected RECHARGE above: QUESTIONS you would like us to answer: This is a new and experimental plan, so please be patient with us as we enact this service.
