Long) [PictureDecomPress 1.03 - part 1 of 4] Here is an archive containing two files, a PICT of the TidBITS Editors (suitable for framing if you happen to have a color printer around :-)) and a free JPEG decompressor program. You _must_ decompress the picture to view it, and be aware that the decompressor requires 32-bit QuickDraw under System 6 (it is built into System 7), and 2 MB of RAM. It also takes a little while to decompress, about 2 minutes on my SE/30 under System 7. Don't worry about the speed though, since the original picture was about 760K and the compressed file is about 50K, with little loss in quality. I submit this file for several reasons. First, the picture was taken with a Canon still-image digital camera (not the XapShot, but the fancier one, the 540 or something like that), so you can get a sense of the quality of photos taken with that camera. Second, we compressed the picture with Storm's PicturePress JPEG compression utility, which was instantaneous with the board the Canon rep had, so you can get a sense of how much quality is lost with JPEG compression. Third, this makes a good test picture to print on color printers, since they do primary colors fine but tend to have trouble with skin tones and the like (if you're interested in printing photos). Fourth, I've had some requests from people who say they want to check out the quality but obviously want to print out this picture and frame it. :-) :-) :-) Hope you find this useful. Finally, for those who want to manipulate this picture in Photoshop or whatever and send us the amazing results (stuffed, binhexed, and in less than 90K chunks to make uucp happy, please), we'll pick the best pictures and mention them in TidBITS. If they're really good, we'll print test pictures on the next color printer we see and frame them. :-) As is usual with TidBITS, there's no reward other than undying appreciation and fame. Enjoy ....
