GENERAL What are the components of a Digital software product? ------------------------------------------------------ A "software product" consists of the license, the binaries and the documentation. The following three components allow you to use a software product. LICENSE MEDIA Binaries DOCUMENTATION (not required) As new versions of the software product are created with additional functionality, the following components need to be added to allow you to access the new version of the software product. RIGHTS TO (LICENSE) NEW VERSIONS UPDATE LICENSE for SINGLE VERSION UPDATED MEDIA Binaries UPDATED DOCUMENTATION (not required) In addition, you may want additional service such as: PHONE SUPPORT SELF-PACED COURSEWARE 2. WHAT'S INCLUDED IN TEI? What is offered in each of the The Education Initiative programs? ----------------------------------------------------------------- What you get: What TEI Program: Annual licenses and rights Campuswide Software License Grant to new version (CSLG) (Product authorization keys - PAKs that expire in one year's time) Telephone support on CSLG software Education Software Library (ESL) (you must screen 80% of calls) Discount on discountable software licenses, rights to new version, media, documentation, software CDROMs TEI Grant What discounts are included in TEI for each of the components of a software product? ------------------------------------------------------------------ THE EDUCATION INITIATIVE has programs and support offerings that address each component of the software product. SOFTWARE PRODUCT LICENSES: Campuswide Software License Grant Program Initial License & Rights to New Versions CSLG Annual Contract 600+ products --------------------------- TEI Grant PROGRAM Royalty Licenses 50% off USCLP Any commercial Software Product License can be purchased at a 50% discount (QL-part number and must be discountable) SOFTWARE PRODUCT MEDIA AND DOCUMENTATION: Hkit Binaries on Media and Hardcopy Documentation Available at a 50% TEI discount SOFTWARE PRODUCT MEDIA AND DOCUMENTATION ON CDROM: CONOLD CONSOLIDATED CDROM DISTRIBUTION SW Product Binaries and Documentation CONDIST SW Product Binaries OLD CDROM ON-LINE DOCUMENTATION Doc Sets All available at a 50% TEI discount for a single distribution SOFTWARE PRODUCT DOCUMENTATION: DOCUMENTATION KIT GZ-KIT Hardcopy Documentation Available at a 50% TEI discount How does TEI handle DECwindows MOTIF? ------------------------------------- LICENSE: The CSLG program does *not* provide license or right to new version for DECwindows MOTIF. The only exception is if you participated in the special MOTIF LICENSE DEAL described below. License for DECwindows MOTIF is no longer bundled with the VMS operating system and a license for it must be purchased. A 50% discount is available on the license purchase for TEI schools. UPDATES/MEDIA: DECwindows MOTIF media is included in CONDIST (consolidated software distribution CD set) and documntation for DECwindows MOTIF is included in OLD (online documentation CD set). The ESL program includes support for DECwindows MOTIF by calling the customer support center. SPECIAL MOTIF LICENSE DEAL EXPIRED IN FEB 1992: If you applied for the license, you received a permanent license for VMS DECwindows MOTIF V1.0 for the machines you specified to Digital plus a media kit. You did not receive any rights to new versions or any software support as part of that CSLG license offer. RIGHTS TO NEW VERSION OF MOTIF UNDER SPECIAL DEAL: If the machine using the special MOTIF license was under a service contract (SSS or ESL) then you received the RTNV and software support from your service contract. You can choose to remain at any version of MOTIF permanently using the special license deal or you can purchase update licenses for specific versions of MOTIF if you do not maintain a service contract on the machine and the software version gets far out of date. Is the VMS Initial Operating System license included in the CSLG? ----------------------------------------------------------------- No. However, VMS license upgrades to unlimited users *are* available for all VMS platforms including VAXstations and VAXservers. But you still must purchase some form of VMS license with the system. Also, the right to new version (RTNV) is included in CSLG so you may upgrade the operating system. Support for VMS is available under the ESL or you may purchase a software maintenance contract. Are ULTRIX and ULTRIX RISC Initial Operating System licenses in CSLG? --------------------------------------------------------------------- No. When you purchase an ULTRIX or ULTRIX RISC system from Digital you must purchase a standard operating system license. Even if you plan to participate in CSLG, you should purchase a license. You can purchase licenses to upgrade the number of ULTRIX users by using the 50% discount in the TEI Grant. An exception for ULTRIX: if you have previously received an ULTRIX license from Digital because you had a license agreement with AT&T or with UNIX System Laboratories for UNIX System V, you can continue to give Digital a copy of your AT&T or USL license agreement and receive the ULTRIX licenses from CSLG for the machines that are covered on the agreement. In general, no initial operating system licenses are provided in the standard CSLG program. If you purchase a system from Digital, you must purchase a standard base operating system license. Can I get OSF/1 licenses from CSLG? ----------------------------------- You can receive the upgrade licenses for OSF/1. The OSF/1 AXP 1-Unlimited Interactive User License was grandfathered into CSLG in January 1993. You must first purchase a standard base operating system license with the machine in order to apply the user upgrade licenses provided by CSLG. 3. SOME TEI HOW-TO'S AND RULES Who can use the software provided under the TEI programs? --------------------------------------------------------- You must be a faculty member, employee or registered student of the TEI institution to use the TEI software. How can TEI software be used? ----------------------------- TEI software may be used to support research, teaching, administration and other activities of a TEI institution. The TEI software may also be used for personal use on systems owned by faculty, staff or registered students of the TEI institution. You may not transfer CSLG licenses outside of the institution's license domain as you described it in your agreement with Digital. In the case of faculty who perform outside consulting: TEI software can be used for this purpose if there is a legal agreement between the institution and the other party where faculty consulting is part of the agreement. The consulting must be overseen by the institution. What control must in place when non-authorized users (those who are not faculty, employee or registered student) will use a machine that hosts TEI software? ------------------------------------------------------------------- Operating system and network software (DECnet) licenses are sold with the Digital systems so no access control needs to be established for these and anyone may use them according to the terms of your commercial software licenses. If you need to control access by non-authorized users to TEI software, passworded accounts or access lists are sufficient. Can a machine that is part of TEI be used as a gopher server? ------------------------------------------------------------- Yes, as long as proper controls are in place to control access to TEI software by non-authorized users. How do I get software technical support from Digital under TEI? --------------------------------------------------------------- To get software support, you can participate in the ESL program. In ESL, you are allotted 3 contacts to call the Customer Service Center by phone. You can purchase as many other contacts as you wish at $2,400 per year for each additional contact. You can also receive support under the ESL by using DSN (Digital Support Network) which requires a modem and some special software that runs on VMS and ULTRIX. (The ULTRIX version allows for connection to DSN using the Internet instead of modem) DSN allows the authorized contact to place support questions using email. DSN also llows for search of text databases of known bugs, workarounds for software problems, etc. Important note: ESL requires that sites screen 80% of their support requests - they must answer 80% locally while only forwarding 20% of the questions to Digital. How do I arrange for software services including technical support under TEI if I *don't* participate in ESL? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The following shows you the differences between the CSLG and the commercial model for software product service offerings: CSLG MODEL for Software Product Service for 7 systems 1. CSLG <---HOST System* Software Support Service Layered Product Support 2. CSLG 3. CSLG 4. CSLG <---ADDITIONAL Systems 5. CSLG 6. CSLG 7. CSLG COMMERCIAL MODEL for Software Product Service for 7 systems 1. Software Support Service <---HOST System* Layered Product Support 1. SNS 2. SNS 3. SNS <---ADDITIONAL Systems LPS* LPS* LPS* 4. SNS 5. SNS 6. SNS LPS* LPS* LPS* *Note: The HOST system must be the largest system. Both of the above models provide you with the same level of service. Both models provide you with phone support and rights to use new versions for the operating system, system integrated products and layered products. CSLG = Campuswide Software License Grant Program (license and Rights to New Versions for 600+ software products) SSS = Software Support Service (Phone support, Rights to New Versions and access for Digital's Software Information Network (DSIN) for the operating system and system integrated products). This offering will give you 3 phone support contacts under your access number. SNS = Software Node Support Service (Extends SSS to 2-N systems) LPS = Layered Product Support Service (Extends Phone support, Rights to New Versions and access to DSIN for layered products (SSS is a prerequisite) RTNV = Rights to New Versions (the rights to use and copy new versions of the software products) BSS = Basic System Support Service (Integrated Service includes SSS) DSS = DECservice System Support (Integrated Service includes SSS) BNS = Basic Node Support (includes SNS) DNS = DECservice Node Support (includes DNS) Because CSLG provides you with the initial license (right to use) for the software product as well as the rights to use new versions (RTNV) of the software product for any system under CSLG, the only system that requires a service contract is the HOST System. Under CSLG, SSS and LPS need only be purchased for the HOST System. In the commercial model, SSS must be purchased for the first system and SNS for the 2-N systems to extend the RTNV for the operating system and system integrated products. In the commercial model, LPS must be power rated for the systems using the layered product software to extend RTNV for each layered product. CSLG Software Support Service Process: The following is an outline of the process CSLG customers should follow in determining the appropriate software product support offering. - Designate a HOST System (largest system) - Make a list of the systems that will be part of your CSLG Service Offering - Make a list of products that are used on those systems - All Phone Support is routed through the HOST System - The Software Product Service contract is managed by the HOST System - The Software Product Service Contract is tied to CSLG Agreement # CSLG PHONE SUPPORT: (Products are in CSLG) Phone Support for Operating System and System Integrated Products: SOFTWARE SUPPORT SERVICE for the Operating System (SSS) * SSS is a component of DECservice Support (DSS) and Basic System Support (BSS) * Purchase for the HOST System Phone Support for Layered Software Products: LAYERED PRODUCT SUPPORT for each layered product (LPS) * Purchase for the HOST System MEDIA AND DOCUMENTATION UPDATES: MEDIA AND DOCUMENTATION DISTRIBUTION SERVICE Updates to Hkits (MDDS) * There is no prerequisite service for CSLG customers purchasing MDDS for CSLG products * Purchase for each product that requires media and documentation updates * There is no TEI discount on MDDS MEDIA AND DOCUMENTATION DISTRIBUTION SERVICE ON CDROM: CONSOLIDATED CDROM SOFTWARE and DOCUMENTATION DISTRIBUTION (CONOLD) SW Product Binaries and Online Documentation Updates for CONOLD (bimonthly) CONSOLIDATED CDROM DISTRIBUTION (CONDIST) SW Product Binaries with Hardcopy DOC for VMS Updates for CONDIST (bimonthly) CDROM ON-LINE DOCUMENTATION (OLD) Doc Sets Updates for OLD * There is no prerequisite service for CSLG customers purchasing CONDIST or OLD updates. * There is currently a 50% discount available to new CDDS Subscription Customers available through July 1993. DOCUMENTATION UPDATE SERVICE: DOCUMENTATION UPDATE SERVICE KZ-Service Hardcopy Documentation * There is no prerequisite service for CSLG customers purchasing KZ service for CSLG products * There is no TEI discount on Documentation Update Service How do you combine CONDIST (Consolidated Software Distribution) OLD (On-line Documentation-BookReader) and CONOLD (both Software and On-Line Doc) with TEI programs to get media and documentation for the TEI software? ----------------------------------------------------------------- You can choose CONDIST, OLD and CONOLD for media distribution and electronic documentation in place of media like TK-50, magtapes and hardcopy manuals. While none of these are a *perfect* match for the TEI programs, they are very close. If you wish to get both media and doc electronically and have them updated regularly, CONOLD is slightly less expensive than buying one subscription to CONDIST and one to OLD. You can also choose to purchase a single distribution of either CONDIST or OLD if you are interested in the particular versions contained on them. This would be in place of buying a year's subscription to the CDROM distribution service. Words of caution: With the VMS CONDIST on *several* separate CDROMs, ULTRIX on several more and OSF/1 on several *more*, and then adding the OLDs for each of these which are also on several CDROMs for each operating system, you are quickly looking at a tall pile of CDROMs. If you need to make very much of this available electronically at your site you should consider these possibilities: 1) transferring a lot of stuff to magnetic media for storage and retrieval-find a vendor of good, cheap disk 2) juke box/InfoServer mechanisms to "shuffle" the CDROMs for access 3) a stack of CD readers subject to the limitations of your hardware configuration Another caution: A single distribution of CONDIST, OLD or CONOLD may be discounted 50% under the TEI Grant. Update Service for CONDIST, OLD and CONOLD are not discountable, except for special offers. What happens to the software licenses if a computer drops out of the CSLG program or the CSLG program is cancelled by Digital? ---------------------------------------------------------------- If a computer no longer participates in the CSLG program but will keep using software licensed through the CSLG, you will have to purchase commercial licenses for those products. Exceptions to this are licenses for the operating system and DECnet since commercial licenses are sold along with the machine. You may need to purchase upgrades for the number of concurrent users if you previously received upgrades from CSLG. Replacement licenses can be purchased at a 50% discount through the TEI Grant. If you do not buy commercial licenses for the CSLG products you want to keep using, the licenses will terminate at the end of your normal CSLG year. If Digital cancels the CSLG program, there is a requirement that Digital give two years' notice to participants. During that two years' time, sites can purchase software licenses at an 80% discount to replace those licenses they were using through CSLG. .
