There are several aspects to software preservation, one of which is
preserving the contents of the physical media used to distribute
software before network distribution became the norm. For much older
software, especially games, media preservation is required to ensure
proper operation of the software. Even when it isn't required, it is
still a useful way to guarantee an unmodified copy of the software.
