Closure =============================================================================== WARNING! MERCILESS SPOILERS AHEAD! =============================================================================== 1. INTRODUCTION =============================================================================== Without a doubt, Splinter Cell is one of the most revolutionary titles that the videogaming industry has produced. I COULD write a few adulating paragraphs on how great and flirtatious it is, but to avoid the title of "fanboy", I'll cut to the chase. Throughout the course of gameplay, you will need to rely on intercepted intelligence to proceed on your missions. In the Splinter Cell universe, this is most commonly in the form of data text dumps, generally that from data sticks. However, not every piece of data you find is necessary to finish the game, and some can be particularly difficult to acquire. In addition, people playing via stealth methods may not be able to access these trivial collections of tidbits, yet still might want to experience the various storyline enrichments that they can provide. This FAQ was written with those very people in mind. Every source of data is herein outlined, and all have been transcribed fully for your reading pleasure. Even better, this FAQ won't give you cancer! (See the transcripts for Kalinatek 4, Kola Cell 3, and Kola Cell 10 to get "in" on this joke) Enjoy! NOTE: I strongly suggest you read "How To Use This FAQ Like a Pro" before using this FAQ, as there are a few conventions I followed when typing up the locations and transcripts. =============================================================================== 2. How To Use This FAQ Like a Pro =============================================================================== Keep the following in mind when you use this FAQ: - From hereon, I will use the term "data stick" for data that is taken from computers or the satchels that guards carry, and simply "data" for data that is transmitted directly to your OPSAT. - The typos in the transcripts are deliberate, as the original text from the game has quite a few spelling and grammatical errors which I want to reflect. - I will refer to a specific data/data stick as "[Name of Mission] [X]", where X is the Xth data/data stick you can get in the mission. So "Blah 4" would mean the fourth data/data stick than can be gotten in the "Blah" mission. With this notation it is easy to find both the location and transcript of a specific data/data stick using your browser's Find/Search feature (Often CTRL + F). See the table below for the names I use for each mission. - Most of my locations are based off of environmental features of the area. - As warned above, there are many spoilers in this FAQ, especially in the transcripts. In the "Data/Data Stick Locations," I have tried to minimize spoilers for the rookie scavenger as much as possible. In my near forty years as a medical examiner, I have never once seen a cadaver commit a crime. I am certain that there are other places in this very building where security cameras might do a much better job of spotting criminals. I am not speaking of the holding cells either. Why, just last week I tagged some poor soul whose skull had been caved in by object distinctly similar to the batons issued by our officers. Had there been security cameras in the research lab instead of the morgue itself, we might have caught the party responsible for destroying the evidence in that case. Dr S. Konipodze, M.E. PhD. I'm trapped back here now, as they seem to have locked down the doors, however I overheard a standing order for them to be prepared to retake the decompressor room if anything goes wrong. If you can get to the decompressor room, they may have to open the doors to come up after you. Then I can get out of here and we can try and call for help. Yvgeny Vselka Submarine 1: From: Sofron To: Jaro Sent: 26/01/2005 19:51 Subject: Subaquatic evac Jaro, Regardless of their uniforms, these guys are not Russian soldiers. I'm going for help. I'm going to try a subaquatic exit through the forward torpedo tubes. I've patched the launch controls with a bit a code that will automate the hatch sequencing on a 150 second timer. That should be enough time to make it from the launch computer to the hatch. assuming they haven't anticipated an escape through the tubes and put a bunch of guards in the torpedo room. Wish me luck. Sofron Vselka Submarine 2: From: Colonel Alekseevich To: - Sent: 26/01/2005 14:22 Subject: Fire control. Men, As you may have already deduced, tonight's operation will take us aboard a submarine. Due to the nature of the environment, you will not be permitted to use long arms or explosives. Colonel Budanov will come around and collect magazines from all of you. You will be issued shotguns, and gas grenades in places of your rifles and fragmentation grenades. You are not to replace the shotgun rounds with slugs, as penetrating rounds could compromise the inner hull. You may continue to use short cartridge arms such as pistols and sub- machine guns, but be sure of your targets as even these projectiles could cause inconvenient collateral damage to the vessel. Colonel Alekseevich Vselka Submarine 3: From: Sergeant Mikhailov To: Gaspar Sent: 26/01/2005 20:28 Subject: I also cook. Gaspar, I think you're right. I sent Budanov a mail about Alekseevich and he had a completely different tone than usual. Very threatening. I think Alekseevich is dead, and that the entire Kola cell might have been hit. If that's the case, we're either in big trouble, or we've won the jackpot. If we manage to offload these nukes and get out of here, we won't have to split the cash with the other cell. More money for us = early retirement. Maybe you and I can pool our shares and go in on a little restaurant somewhere warmer? You can handle the business end and I'll be the chef. I make a pretty mean borscht. Sergeant Mikhailov Vselka Submarine 4: From: Sergeant Mikhailov To: Colonel Budanov Sent: 26/01/2005 19:31 Subject: Overdue. Low Morale. Colonel Budanov, It is my duty to report that Colonel Alekseevich has still not arrived from our Kola Base, leaving his helicopter now several hours overdue. The men awaiting him have critical duties to perform, and as time passes, their ability to achieve these objectives at all falls into doubt. Morale outside on the docks is dropping rapidly due to the cold, fatigue, and our delayed commander. I will do what I can and continue to stand my post until the arrival of Colonel Alekseevich, or until I receive further orders. Sergeant Mikhailov Vselka Submarine 5: From: Colonel Alekseevich To: Budanov Sent: 19/01/2004 20:11 Subject: Vselka weapons locker Colonel Budanov, As promised, Mr. Masse has penetrated the security network and discovered the door code to the Vselka's armoury. The code is 20387. Unfortunately, given the sad state of the bureauocracy of our former fatherland the contents of the armoury have not been properly tracked. Please be aware that it may contain weapons that should not be fired aboard a submarine. I will send a further email to this effect to your men. Colonel Alekseevich Vselka Submarine 6: From: Colonel Alekseevich To: Sergeant Mikhailov Sent: 26/01/2005 19:36 Subject: RE: Overdue. Low Morale. Sergeant Budanov, While I appreciate your concern for Colonel Alekseevich, I detect a questioning tone in your previous mail. This tone is not appropriate and if I hear it again, I will have you removed. You will maintain the morale of your men, as is your duty. You will await the arrival of Alekseevich as ordered and deliver him to the Vselka immediately upon his arrival. You will also complete all duties assigned to you, regardless of the fact that Colonel is late. You have not been asked to think about your orders. Only to execute them. Spend your intellectual efforts coming up with a way to perform all duties assigned to your men rather than questioning those who have honored you through assigning those duties. Colonel Budanov Vselka Submarine 7: From: Philip Masse To: Alekseevich Sent: 11/29/2004 18:29 Subject: Not my problem Hey, Big Al Look, when it comes to giving you the tools you need to penetrate the clunky architecture of outdated soviet transistor based computers, I'm your man, but I just ain't interested in helping you detonate nukes. Nukes - messy. Computers - clean. Get it? You can come up here to this hell-hole and scream at me all you want about your evil master plan, but I wouldn't waste your breath. I'll help you get in. I'll help you get them. I'll even figure out how they work and help you sell them, but I'm not one of those techno-nihilists you read about on hacker forums, and I ain't gonna help you actually detonate a nuke. If you blow up all the world's computers, you'll put me out of work. Remember the part where I told you I was in this for the money? - pHilip MAsSE Vselka Submarine 8: From: Jaro To: Sofron Sent: 26/01/2005 20:22 Subject: RE: Subaquatic evac Sofron You're right. They aren't friendly. Get the hell off this boat. I don't know if your torpedo hatch plan worked, but if you ever get this mail, please advise, as I am following you. I'm outside the launch control room now, but it's heavily guarded, so I don't know if you managed to get your program to work or not. I'm going to try going in through a vent over the ceiling. With any luck one of us will make it out of here. Jaro =============================================================================== 6. Frequently Asked Questions =============================================================================== Q: I picked up a satchel/used a computer that was supposed to give me a data stick, but I didn't get anything. What gives? A: Some data sticks in this game exist in more than one place. If they are found a second time, then Splinter Cell acts as though there is nothing on the computer/in the satchel. Check the locations above to confirm that this is the case. Q: How can I get a satchel off of a guard? A: Other than the two usual methods of knocking out/killing him, you can also shoot off the satchel with a well-placed shot. This alerts the guard right away, so it's not too practical. Q: What's up with CIA HQ 14? A: CIA HQ 14 is encrypted. Unfortunately, it has a keycode that you need to enter the next room, which is an optional "ammo room". If you can't figure out the trick, *** SPOILERS *** look for the repeating string of numbers "020781". That's the code. Congratulations, all you got for your efforts was some sticky cameras and sticky shockers. Yay! *** END SPOILERS*** =============================================================================== 7.
