This is a complete, in-depth walkthrough to the Get A Life mode, which is the story mode in The Sims. Creating Your Sim ----------------- The first screen you will come to after clicking on the 'Get a Life' button is the screen in which you will create your sim. You can edit everything about your sim, below is a list of exactly what you can edit: Family Name - Before you do anything, you must put in the surname of your sim. Personal - You can edit your sim's first name, gender, and his/her personality points. Please look im the next section about Personality Points. Body - Edit your sim's skin tone, body type (thin, normal or fat), what shirt they where and what colour it is, what they were on their legs and what colour that is and what shoes (if any) they where and what colour they are. Head - Edit your sim's face style, hairstyle and hat type and the colour of that, facial hair (if any) and the colour of that, eye colour and accessories (glasses or earrings and necklaces). Then click on done when you are finished creating your sim. Now your life can begin! Note - To find out the choices when creating a child sim, look at the 'Play The Sims' section of this guide. Level 1: Dream House -------------------- DIFFICULTY - Very Easy GOALS - None After creating your sim you are taken to a massive house with lots of expensive accessories. This is your chance to get to know the controls a bit better. You can 'Use' an item by hovering over it and clicking on the X button. After about 5 seconds you get a message that comes up which is your sim wondering where the hell he is. Click X after you have read this message. Straight afterwards, in a flurry of smoke, a hot woman appears right in front of you. Then, for no apparent reason, you kiss. Your sim must know the woman because he says 'Roxy, what are you doing here?' straight after the kiss. Roxy then walks over to the hot tub and gets in. After about 10 seconds, Roxy invites you to join her in the hot tub. When you get in, the level is completed. But remember, you don't have to get in the tub straight away, explore a bit, as you might not see any of the items in this house for a long time. Level 2: Money From Mom ----------------------- DIFFICULTY - Easy GOALS - Borrow $800 from Mom Cook dinner without starting a fire Fix the TV Get A Job After being in this massive house, you are woken up to what is more like a slum rather than a house by your mum, it was all a dream! This is your first proper level on The Sims. You main goal is to borrow $800 from your mum so you can move out on your own. The first thing your mum does is break the TV, so that is another goal for you to accomplish. You also may have noticed that you have another goal other than getting the money from Mom, that is to cook a dinner without starting a fire. OK, we'll start with fixing the TV. First, you will need to study mechanical (just click on the bookcase, and select the appropriate option) until you have 1 bar filled (hold the left directional button to see how many bars you have in each skill). Now you are skilled enough to fix the TV. It does take a while to fix the TV because you are so unskilled but you can do it with only 1 bar. Next, let's cook dinner without starting a fire. First, go to the bookcase a select 'Study Cooking'. Again, study until you have 1 bar. Now you will definitely be able to cook once without starting a fire. Go to the fridge and select 'Serve Lunch'. You sim will now automatically take the food out of the fridge and cook it on the oven. Now you have completed 2 out of 3 goals. Your next goal is the main one, borrowing the money from your mum. The way to do this is to keep talking to Mom until your relationship is over 50 (hold the right directional button to view relationship statistics. Then compliment her a couple of times, then select 'Borrow Money'. She will give you $100 everytime you ask her, so you will have to ask 8 times to have enough money. Beware though, Mom will not give you any money if she is in a bad mood, so make sure all of her mood bars have at least a quarter green (hold the up directional button to view the mood bars). After the eighth time, you will get a message saying that you have enough money to move out, and then you will get another goal, 'Get A Job'. To do this, you must simply go to the paper that is waiting for you outside, and select 'Find A Job'. You will be shown a list of possible jobs you can take, simply press X when you see the one that most appeals to you, and there you have it, you have finished level 2! Level 3: Reality Bites ---------------------- DIFFICULTY - Quite Easy GOALS - Clean the place up Fix the broken stuff Get promoted to level 2 Get promoted to level 3 Increase house value from $34,561 to $35,711 This is the first level in the game that is going to take you some time. After completing level 2, Mom recommends that you go and see a guy called Mr Landgrabb to pay what she has lent you in rent to him for a house. You then find yourself talking to a strange ginger haired person called Dudley outside your new pad. He tells you that he will let you live in the house for free if you can clean it up. He said that it was in such a state because he had too many parties in there. So the first thing you should do is start clearing things up. There is a lot of rubbish around, so this will take you about a day. The next goal to work on should be fixing all of the broken stuff. I think that the only stuff that is broken is the computer and the coffee machine, but I am not sure. To fix the broken stuff you should have at least 1 mechanical point, preferably 2. After fixing the broken stuff you need to get promoted. To do this, all you have to do is press D-Pad left and looking at that menu, you have to work on the points that are coloured in yellow. You can work on points by buying something that will increase that certain skill (for example the benchpress machine if you need to work on your 'body' skill). Once you are promoted to level 2, you must then do the same method again because you need to get promoted to level 3. The next goal is the one that is going to cost you a bit, you must increase the house value by $1,150. All you have to do is buy an item that costs equal or more than that amount. This will nearly wipe out your finances. Anyway, after doing that you will have completed the level and you will move out into Dudley's house! Well done! Level 4: Party Animals ---------------------- DIFFICULTY - Very Hard GOALS - Get promoted to level 4 Get promoted to level 5 Increase house value from $53,180 to $54,680 Throw a raging party Move a with one of Dudley's friends at a party For some reason this is one of the hardest levels in the game, and it is right in the middle of the game! You are now in a house with Dudley and you can control Dudley aswell. Don't bother doing anything with Dudley, just make sure you send him to work on time every day. Dudley never does any housework so you will either need to do it all yourself or hire a maid. OK, the first thing you should work on is getting promoted to level 4 and level 5, again you just need to work on the skill level coloured in yellow. Now you have to buy an item that is worth $1,500 or above to increase the house value. Now tha hard bit comes in, you have to throw a party that is 'raging'. This can be very hard to do. To make a party raging you must first of all get loads of people over. Then you should get Dudley to cook loads of burgers on the barbecue (about 3 plates), then you should buy 2 hot tubs when you have the money. And last of all, you should have a stereo in the garden playing out music. You will know if your party is raging because one of the guests will tell you so. The hard thing about it though is that nearly all of the time, before you party is raging the police will come and close it down and all the guests will leave, you just have to be lucky. The last goal is a pretty easy one if you do manage to throw a raging party. You have to move out with one of the party guests. To do this, simply pick someone that you quite like, and keep on talking to them and complimenting them until they are in love with you (relationship is over +80). Then all you have to do is select 'Ask to be room mate' and, if you party is raging, they will move out with you and you will have completed the level! Well done! Level 5: Hot To Trot -------------------- DIFFICULTY - Very Hard GOALS - Get promoted to level 6 Get promoted to level 7 Increase house value from $46,050 to $48,050 Throw a raging party Try to 'score' with a party guest This level is pretty much the same as the last one, the only differences are that you are getting promoted to levels 6 and 7, you have to buy an item worth $2,000 or more and after throwing another raging party you are trying to 'score' with a party guest. To do this find someone you like of the opposite sex and make them fall in love with you (relationship over +80), then press 'Score With', and if it is a raging party this will work and you will get married right there and you will have completed the level and you and your new wife will move in together. Level 6: Who Loves Ya Baby -------------------------- DIFFICULTY - Hard GOALS - Get promoted to level 8 Get promoted to level 9 Increase house value from $69,404 to $73,404 Have 2 babies Keep children in school This level does not involve throwing raging parties so I actually think it is slightly easier than the last 2 levels. You are now in a house with your new wife. Don't get your wife a job because she is needed later on in this level. OK, the first thing you should do is get promoted to level 8 and 9 by again fufilling the yellow skill points. Then buy an item worth $4,000 or above to increase the house value. Next the hard part comes in. 2 babies will appear and you have to look after them and raise them into children. This is where your wife comes in handy. The babies will need a lot of attention, they will probably cry every 3 hours. So, build another room in your house with a bed, a fridge, a toilet and a computer. Put your wife and the babies in that room so that your sim isn't being woke up all the time so he isn't late for work and so that when your baby does need attention the wife can do it immediately because she will have everything that she needs to live in that room. After a while your babies will grow into children. All you now have to do is keep them in school. To do this, simply keep their grade at B or above by studying a little bit every night. Then you have completed the penultimate level of The Sims! Well done! Level 7: The Last Simoleon ------------------------- DIFFICULTY - Extreme GOALS - Get promoted to level 10 Send children to prep school Buy a yacht Throw a raging party Well done, you have made it all the way to the last level of The Sims! OK, the first thing you should do in this level is get your final promotion, to level 10, by again fufilling the skill points in yellow. Then you have to send your kids to prep school, this is easy. All you have to do is get them a computer each and get them to study for a few hours each night. They will be sent to prep school when they have an A+ grade. It will cost $3,000 to send both of them but you should have enough money to cover that by now. Then you have to buy a yacht, this will cost $20,000, but again you should have enough to cover the cost for that. Now you have to throw one last raging party. You need to have a lot of friends round to make this one succeed. Once the party is raging, you have completed the level, and you get a really cool ending sequence which I won't spoil the surprise of. You have now completed 'Get A Life' mode on The Sims, well done!!! I hope this guide helped you! ****************************************************************************** CAREER PATHS ****************************************************************************** This section will give you a description of every career path you can possibly follow in The Sims, it will also tell you all the stages of promotion and the pay in this stages. This mode is the open-ended gameplay mode, like what you do on the PC version of The Sims. Creating A Neighbourhood ------------------------ As soon as you click on the Play The Sims button for the first time, you will have to create a new neighbourhood. You are then taken to a screen where you have to enter the name you want to give to your neighbourhood. After doing this you are taken to your neighbourhood. This consists of 8 houses, but 3 of these houses are automatically inhabited by computer made families and houses. But you can delete this families and houses and create you own. Creating a Family ----------------- The first thing you will want to do after creating your neighbourhood is creating your first family. To do this press circle (O) from your neighbourhood and you will be taken to the list of families who don't currently live anywhere in you neighbourhood, there are 2 computer created families on this menu, but you can delete them, just highlight them and press circle to delete them. To begin creating your family all you have to do is highlight 'Create New Family' on this screen and press circle. You are then taken to the screen where you must enter the surname of your family. Once you have entered the surname you are taken to the main family screen, this is the screen where you can create new family members or edit or delete existing family members. Just highlight 'New' and press X to go to the screen to create a new sim. To find out how to create a sim please refer to my 'Creating Your Sim' section earlier in this guide. You can create up to 4 family members and when you are finished highlight 'Done' and press X. The family that you have just created will now be added to the family list. Building a House - Basics ------------------------- After creating a family you will want to move them into a house. To do this, on the neighbourhood screen press left or right on the d-pad until you have found an empty lot. Next press 'Move in Family', you will then be taken to the family list where you can select which family you want to put in the house. Once doing this, press 'Enter House'. You will now be taken to your house and you will be asked if you want the help system to be on or not. If you are not familiar with the game, make sure you press X to select 'Yes' to this question. After doing this, immediately press start to go to the pause menu. Now select 'Build' to begin building your house! You are now shown a vertical menu with lots of symbols representing different types of items, these symbols are pretty easy to figure out so I won't go into detail about them. The first thing you should do is put the walls up in the house, so select the 'Wall Tool'. Now to build a wall hold down X and drag the wall in the direction that you want to. Once you have made you walls you should now choose the wall decoration and the type of flooring you want. Next put the doors in. Then put the windows in, but note that you must put plenty of windows in because for some reason your sims get really depressed if there are note many windows, so put at least 1 window for every 4 pieces of wall. Next you should put your plants in where you want them, then if you want to (and if you can afford to), put a fireplace and a swimming pool in. Now you have finished building the basic parts of your house and it is now time to move on to putting the items in. To do this select 'Buy' from the pause menu and then select what items you want. For a full description of every item in the game look at the 'Items' section of this guide. Living Your Life ---------------- Now you have finished building your house you are now ready to begin living your life! The more family members you have created, the harder it will be because you have got to control so many people. Remember that after creating your house you will probably be skint (that's if you didn't cheat), so you will definitely need to send the adult(s) in your family out to work to pay the bills. Another thing you absolutely must do is have one person have at least 3 cooking points, so you won't be starting any fires. And also, if you have more than 1 family member, make sure you select 'Serve Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner', because that will mean you will make 4 meals on 1 plate. If you have people in your family who are quite messy, make sure you hire a maid because they are very cheap and definitely worth it. And the last but most important thing to remember, never get your sims to try to fix something with no mechanical points, as there is a pretty good chance that they will die. And that's all you need to know for your sims to live a happy life! ******************************************************************************* MULTIPLAYER ******************************************************************************* One of the very few differences to the PC version of The Sims is that you can play with 2 players. There are 2 ways in which you can play with 2 players on The Sims. One way is playing a 'Co-operative Game' and another way is playing specially made 'Multiplayer Games'. Both of these modes are described in this section. Co-operative Games ------------------ This type of multiplayer game is used in the 'Play The Sims' mode. To be able to do this, you must first have a family of at least 2 people living in a house in 'Play The Sims' mode. You should enter this house, and then the person with the player 2 controller should press start. This will then put him in the game as the other person or one of the other people, so now 2 players can play the open ended game co-operatively. Unlockable Mini Games --------------------- These are small 2 player games that pit you and the other player head to head to accomplish a certain goal, with the first player to reach this goal being declared the winner. Please note that these games are unlockable and for a list of all the unlockable things and how to unlock them see the 'Unlockables' section of this guide. Below is a list of all the mini games in The Sims: Museum: In this game you have 10 minutes to get as much money as possible from the 'inspectors' that will be in the museum with you. The way to do this is to get the inspectors to fall in love with you and then ask them for some money. The person with the most money at the end of the 10 minutes is declared the winner. The Frat House: This game is simple enough, there is you, your opponent and lots of other people in the house, and the first one to make 3 friends is the winner. The only catch is that you and your opponent can spread rumours about each other, and if the person believes the rumours, they will stay away from the person of whom the rumours are being spread about. Taylor's Place: Plain and simple, again you are with lots of other people but this time you have to fall in love with as many as possible, and you can't spread rumours. Another thing about this one is that a computer controlled person can only be in love with one person, either you or your opponent. Club Abih: Exactly the same as Taylor's Place. The Maid's House: You and your opponent each have one half of a room, which is very messy, so you have to clean it. The person who's half is cleaner by the time the maid comes back is the winner. The catch is that neighbours come in and mess up the house while you are cleaning. Another thing is that the maid's child is in the house aswell and if you keep the child happy the maid will give you some more 'winning hearts'. The Handyman's House: Exactly the same as The Maid's House but with a handyman instead of a maid. The Park: The first person to fill themselves up with food is the winner. You can get food by grilling your own, begging other people for food or stealing food from other people. The only catch is that people come and steal your food from time to time so it is quite hard to fill yourself up. Party Motel: Exactly the same as The Frat House except that you have to fall in love with 3 people rather than just becoming friends with 3 people. ******************************************************************************* ITEMS ******************************************************************************* This is the biggest section in this guide. Using Items Effectively ----------------------- This section is my guide on how to use items the best so you sims will like their house the most. Windows ^^^^^^^ For some reason, your sims become very depressed if there aren't a lot of windows in their house, so always make sure that you put plenty of windows in your house. I would say that you should put one window for every 5 squares of wall space around the outside of your house. Beds ^^^^ Never put a double bed in straight away for 2 sims and expect them to sleep together in it. If they aren't friends (relationship is under +50) then they will not sleep in the same bed. So start off with 2 single beds if you have 2 sims in a house. Paintings and Artistry ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Don't overcrowd your house with artistry. You only have to put it in where it is required. It is required if the sims 'room' mood rating is mostly red when they are in a certain room. If it is over half in a room, no artistry is needed in there. Items Blocking Other Items ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Never put an item in the way of a door or another item, this will only frustrate your sims when they want to use the blocked item or room. Make sure everything is spaced out enough in your house. For more tips on how to build a good house, see the 'Recommendations for Building a House' section later on in this guide. This concludes the items section of this guide, I hope it wasn't an information overload and that you got some use out of it (because it took me days to write!). ******************************************************************************* CHEATING ******************************************************************************* The Sims does have various ways to cheat on it. And, if you are a cheating kind of person or if you just want to mess about with the game, this section is devoted entirely to the cheats in The Sims. Cheat Codes ----------- This section list all the cheat codes that can be entered while in the game, not using a special cheat program like Gameshark. The following codes can be entered at the main menu by holding down L1+L2+R1+R2 and then entering one of the following codes: MIDAS - Unlocks all of the unlockable items and clothing. FREEALL - Everything you buy to put in a house will cost nothing. SIMS - 'Play the Sims' mode is unlocked without having to do the 'Dream House' level of 'Get A Life'. PARTY M - The 'Party Motel' multiplayer mini game is unlocked. FISH EYES - When in game press circle (O) 3 times and you can view your sim in first person view. Action Replay/Gameshark Codes ----------------------------- Please note that Action Replay and Gameshark codes are the same and I think that some of these codes will not work of Action Replay, but I am not sure. Have fun! Recommendations For Building a House ------------------------------------ This section is my guide to the best way to build a house. It will show you what rooms you should build corresponding to how many members of your family you are going to have. 1 Person ^^^^^^^^ One Living Room One Kitchen or Kitchen/Diner One Bathroom One Bedroom One Study (for building up skill levels) 2 People ^^^^^^^^ One Living Room One Kitchen or Kitchen/Diner One or two Bathrooms One or two Bedrooms One Study 3 People ^^^^^^^^ One large Living Room One large Kitchen/Diner Two Bathrooms (3 if you have the money) Two or three Bedrooms One Study 4 People ^^^^^^^^ Two Living Rooms One large Kitchen/Diner Two, three or even four Bathrooms Two or three Bedrooms One large Study If you are just starting out with a family I would recommend only starting with 1 or 2 people, because you can't spend that much at the very beginning. Funny Things To Do ------------------ This section is all about the funny (and maybe cruel) stuff you can with your sims. Have fun! 1. Put your sim in a small room with a fireplace and lots of rugs. Once they are in, take the door away so they a locked in. Then get them to light a fire. The rugs should now catch on fire one by one until the whole room is alight, your sim will then burn to death. A cruel, but comical way to die! 2. Get your sim to try to change a lightbulb with no mechanical skill points. They will electrocute themselves. That really is a funny way to die, changing a lightbulb! 3. Get a child sim and make them get in a swimming pool. Then put tables all the way around the edge of the pool so they can't get out. After about 4 days of eternal swimming let them get out of the pool. If it is a child that you put in, they will have a hyperactive fit and then collapse and die! 4. Put a sim in a small room with a stereo in it and then take the door away so he can't get out. Get the sim to turn on the stereo and set it to 'Country'. Then go to the 'Buy' menu on the pause menu and turn the stereo round so it is facing the wall. Now your sim will not be able to turn the stereo off and they will be doomed to hearing country music for the rest of their life! Another funny thing with this is that when they fall asleep on the floor they are woken up immediately by the stereo. There are several other cruel and funny things that you can get your sim to do, I am sure that you will figure out a lot of them. If anyone has any more things for this section, please email me and I will put them in with a credit to you. ******************************************************************************* OUTRO AND THANKS ******************************************************************************* This just about concludes my guide for The Sims, I hope you enjoyed reading it. Thanks to EA Games and Maxis for making The Sims, my mum for buying the game for me! And most of all, thanks to GameFAQs, Neoseeker and Warp2Games for posting this guide on their respective websites.
