About the Author -------------------- Hello everyone. This is my first FAQ guide for a PlayStation 2 game. I am a 16 year-old average teenage guy. I play JV basketball at my high school and I'm very athletic. I also love sports: basketball, football, baseball, golf (occasionaly). If you have any questions for me just e-mail me and I'll reply as soon as possible. Thank you for reading this FAQ. ----------------------- 3. Basics Instructions ----------------------- Everything about the controls in the game and what buttons to push to do everything. Pretty easy stuff to learn. ---------- 3a. Modes ---------- Practice- Pick a team and practice on your own or with a friend. You can also work on free throws, or all your plays in a scrimmage game. Quick start- The computer randomly picks two teams and then you pick a team to play versus the other team. Exhibition- You pick the teams, the place, the length, the everything. Its all up to you for your very own basketball game. Season- Play along with the 02-03 season, or if 82 games is too long for you (and don't worry it was for me), you've always got the option to play 56, 28, or 14 games. You then have a chance to make the playoffs. Hooray! Playoffs- Don't want to bore yourself with stupid season games? Skip right to the playoffs and have a chance at the NBA Finals. Tourney- Are you the champion? This is the best way to find out who is #1. Just like a playoff but a lot more fun with friends or family. Franchise- This is your chance to control every aspect of an NBA franchise. You're the general manager. You make trades, sign contracts, even scout college prospects. You can control everything with this great mode. ------------------------- 3b. Controls of the game ------------------------- 3b1. Offense: (X)- Pass. This is your basic bounce or chest pass to your closest teammate on the court. (R3)--(just press one of the joysticks) + (X) is touch passing. Hold the "joystick" in the direction of the player you want to pass to. Then press X while the "joyStick" is pointed in the direction of the player you want to pass to, in order to pass to that player. --- [] + X, O, /\, L1 or L2, R1 or R2 is used to for Icon Passing. Whenever you want to pass to a specific player on your team simple press /\ + any combination of X, O, [], /\, or L1, but make sure the player is open. X= Point Guard O= Shooting Guard []= Small Forward /\= Power Forward L1= Center ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alley=Oop: to preform this, simple pass the ball to any offensive player waving his hands near the basket and he will automatically jump and put it in. *** O- Crossover Dribble. The crossover is much easier this year. When close to your "opponent" or the one guarding you, press X to attempt to fake him out and get past him. Depending on your timing, this may work, and this may not. *** []= Shoot Press AND hold the [] button to shoot the ball. Hold [] until the top of your jump, then release. Practice your shots in "practice" mode. Without the ball, [] jumps up and rebounds the ball. *** L1= Post Up a defender Press and hold the L1 trigger to post up against a defender. It is More useful if you are a bigger player then your defender. Don't hold the ball too long or you may be called with a "3 seconds in the key" violation. *** R1= Turbo (run really fast, but you can become tired just as fast, too) Press and hold this button to run really fast on offense or defense. But watch your turbo bar and use it wisely. *** Press R2 + "X", "[]", "/\", or "O" for team Playcalling. You can change the plays in "options". They differ for each team. *** R3 = Fake pass L3 = Call a "Screen" for your player Press L3 to have a teammate come up in front of the opponent guarding you. You can use this feature to get open, shoot, or drive to the hoop. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3b2. The Defensive Controls: (O)- Attempt to steal the ball from your opponent, but don't foul! Press (O) to attempt to steal the ball. Be careful though not to get a piece of the guys arm, and be called for a reaching-in foul (it can get really annoying so be careful). (X)- Switch Player Control Press (X) to switch to the closets player on your team to the ball on defense. *** ([])- Block shot/rebound. Press and hold [] to jump up for the tip, release to attempt to block a shot. Press to jump up and get the ball, also useful to give the shooter less accuracy. Run towards a pass and press B to attempt to steal it. (Note that you must anticipate the receiver of the pass). I'm not the world's greatest blocker, but I find it useful to Line your arm up with the ball, and time your release of the B button with the ball's release. Be careful when you go up, not to touch anything but the ball, or you'll got called for a shooting foul 'less you're in street. *** L1= Face-up the ball handler Press and hold the L1 button to Face your opponent and spread your arms and Legs, making yourself harder to get around, this will make you slower, so it would be very helpful to use the turbo. *** Press R2 + "X", "[]", "/\", or "O" for defensive Playcalling. Same as offense, Press R2 + "X", "[]", "/\", or "O" will call a defensive play. *** R3 = Intentional Foul If your team is losing and you need to stop the clock press and hold R3 to perposely foul an opponent. But watch your team fouls becuase otherwise the other team will get to shoot free throws if your over the limit. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- How to shoot FREE THROWS! It really isn't that hard to do. Just follow these instructions: First. See those two green arrows? They're off to left and right sides. They should look like this: *-------------------* | g bbbbb g | (G)- Green Shooting Arrows | g g g bbbbb g g g | (B)- Basket | g ----- g | | g --- g | | g - g | -*******************- Second. Squeeze the Left and Right "joysticks" so that the two arrows align. You must press them at the same time and make sure they line up as straight as possible. Third. Both arrows should be overlaping and pointed as straight as can be: *------------------* | bbbbb | (G)- Green Shooting Arrows | bbbbb | (B)- Basket | --g-- | | g-g-g | | g | | g | | g | -******************- Then you need to quickly press the [] or L1 or R1 to shoot the ball, whatever you prefer. You only have a spit-second to do it so make sure your quick. ------------------ 3c. Basic Offense ------------------ 1. Crossover Dribble: This move is much easier than last year. You may do an arm fake and then go the other way, or something behind the back, or a spin. Keep pressing (O) to keep trying to get past those defenders! 2. Post and Drop POSTmark it, and drop it in the mail! (Really corny, I know) Anyways, with a good post-player, post up and then while posting, press left or right on the analog joystick to perform a drop-step. You’ll either Beat your defender OR not go anywhere because of the defender's defense. -if this happens, you can either take a shot or pass it off. Also, be careful when posting because another defender may come up and try to steal from you or double team you. 3. Pass the ball into the paint!!! The best and easiest way to get to the basket and score is passing. Just pass the ball up the floor and into the paint for an easy bucket. But beware of defenders who are always looking for a steal. Therefore make sure that you can see the player your passing to otherwise it may be stolen. ----------------- 3d. Basic Defense ----------------- For basic defense the idea is to stop the offensive player with the ball from getting a good shot off or getting to the hoop. Here are some things you can do to play basic defense: 1. You can: Steal the ball Stealing is very dangerous because there is a high risk of your player getting called for a foul. Don't steal unless: A. The defender is facing you or you are on the side of the opponent that has the ball. B. The player is posting up another player and you're in front of him. C.Or if you have a clean shot at the ball. Be sure you only touch the ball, or you'll be called for the reach. 2. Steal a pass You can steal a pass by pressing (O). Try to do this as much as possible because you have a small chance of getting a reach-in foul. It's very useful. 3. Rebounding If the player gets his shot off, switch players to the one nearest basket (Y and R for your Center and Y and Y again for your Power Forward) If the shot doesn't fall, be ready to jump up and grab the ball. 4. Blocking Blocking shots is very hard. You have to have your whole arm directly in front of the ball to get a clean block and no foul. Press [] to block a shot. It's a lot easier if you're a big man in the paint. ---------------------- 4. In-game Strategy ---------------------- This part of the FAQ has information about strategy. Things from plays, defense and offense, positions, and players. Some useful info. --------------------------------- 4a. The positions of the Game --------------------------------- Before you can use strategy, it's important to know what the positions are. Here you go: --- PG (Point Guard)- The point guard is always the best ball handler on the floor. He should also have the ability to pass (a big factor), shoot, and call the plays. Usually the PG is the smallest player on the court as well (although Magic Johnson and Scottie Pippen are around 6-8) and can dribble the ball very well. Some of the NBA's best point guards include: Magic Johnson, Jason Kidd, Gary Payton, Mike Bibby, Steve Nash, and Oscar Robertson are some of the best ever. Point guards are often able to get to the basket easy and are usually one of the quickest players, so be careful if you're guarding one and are not a PG. You may get shook! --- SG (Shooting Guard)- Shooting Guards are often times the best players on the team. They can shoot (obviously), dribble pretty well, pass, and hit shots when the team needs them. Usually the SG is around 6-5 or sometimes smaller or taller. Some of the best in the game are: Tracy Mcgrady, Kobe Bryant, Ray Allen, Michael Finley, Jerry Stackhouse, and Allen Iverson. Shooting guards are usually the go-to players and can score in a number of ways including three- pointers, dunks, mid-range jump shots, and posting-up in the paint for easy buckets. When guarding a SG try to keep him from getting easy lay-ups otherwise they can get "hot" and heat up from the perimeter. --- SF (Small Forward)- The small forwards are not usually the best players on the court unless you have Dirk Nowitzki. They can rebound and score near the basket for easy points. Sometimes they are good 3-point shooters and sometimes not. Most SF like to post-up in the paint and shoot good mid-range jump shots. Some of the greatest small forwards in the NBA are: Jamal Mashburn, Michael Jordan, Dirk Nowitzki, Vince Carter, Paul Pierce, Peja Stojakovic, and Larry Bird. Most SF are around 6-8, plus or minus three inches depending on who you have as your small forward. --- PF (Power Forward)- Being a power forward is almost always the hardest position to play. You have to guard players who can hit three-pointers, post-up in the paint, and hit mid-range jumpers. Some of the best PF are: Kevin Garnett, Tim Duncan, Rasheed Wallace, Antoine Walker, Chris Webber, and Elton Brand. Power forwards are depended upon for rebouding and scoring as well as passing and shooting. There are many, amny great PF in the league and most of them are around 6-10, smaller or taller. Rebounding is the biggest thing they are the best at. --- C (Center)- The center is the player completely relied on to get rebounds. Their whole job is bascially to get boards, and be a force in the paint for the other team. If you want to win games you will need a dominant center, such as: Shaquille O'neal, Vlade Divac, Dikembe Mutumbo, Ben Wallace, and Wilt Chamberlain, and Theo Ratliff. If you want to be a great center pound the ball inside for easy points. Most centers are about 7 feet, plus or minus 2 inches. -------------------------------- 4b. The Key players of the Game -------------------------------- Key players are the go-to guys on the team and always the best players on the court. He's the guy you're counting on to score the winning basket. The following is a breakdown of some of the best key players in the NBA. --- Breakdown of Key Players: Paul Pierce- This player is an extremely good shooter (three-point and mid-range). He can score in a number of ways and averages over 25 points a game and 5 rebounds and 4 assists a game. He is ONE of the best players in the NBA, playing small forward. Allen Iverson- Many people say AI is overrated. Although he leads the league in steals per game and steals overall he doesn't play the best defense you could want. He does score a lot for the Sixers though and is a go-to guy. But watch out for his quickness and speed, he is a shorty after all. Kobe Bryant- This player went on a huge tear midway through the '02-'03 season. With averages of 30 points per game and 5 assists and 5 rebounds Bryant has the comeplete offense and defense as well, getting many steals per game and rebounds. He can easily go for 40 one night and 35 the next. When playing Bryant try to double as much as possible and keep him away from the hoop. Dirk Nowitzki- Dirk is so versatile it's amazing. He can shoot 3-pointers very, very well AND post-up in the paint. He is the best overall big man in the game. His size allows him to get a lot of rebounds, too. Great player. Antoine Walker- AW is not a very good player. He only shoots about 30% from the field and less then that from the three-point range. He is a good spot-up shooter for the Celtics, though. Gary Payton- An All-Star, the best defender in the game, a very sharp and accurate offense, great passer, what more could you want from a PG. Plays great with Sam Cassell on the Bucks. Shaquille O'neal- Easily the most dominant center (and player for that matter) in the NBA. He is so strong and powerful that if you have him on your team it is almost impossible to lose if you use him correctly. GET HIM TO THE BASKET! Tracy McGrady- Probably the best overall shooting guard in the NBA right now. With averages of 32 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds he scores extremely easily. One of the best 3-point shooters in the game, although sometimes he will miss the first couple or so, but don't worry, just keep shooting. The Magic would be nothing without T-MAC. Ray Allen- This shooting guard for the Seattle Super Sonics is one of the purest shooters in the game (both NBA and in 2K3). In NBA 2K3 he is the best 3-point shooter over every other player. Not only can he dribble well and shoot great, he also can get to the basket very easily and pass. It is hard to stop a player who is as versatile as Ray Allen. Ben Wallace- Last years Defensive Player of the Year Wallace is probably the best defender near the basket in the game of basketball. He leads the league in rebounding and is in the top 3 in blocked shots. His defense is so very good that you may want him on your team just for that. Although he can also score when he needs to. Tim Duncan- This player was last years season MVP and can get a whole lot of rebounds, plus score very well. He averages a double-double (at least 10 points and 10 rebounds or assists). He is a great rebounder as a power forward. Michael Jordan (WIZARDS)- Although his rating may not say he isn't a very good player, he actually is. He averages 20 points a game and is still a very good ball handler. His shooting percentage is usually not very good but eventually he WILL score. I played with him as the WIzards and he scored 20 straight points in the third quarter. It takes a while for him to heat up sometimes, but when he does MJ is extremly dangerous. ----------------- 4c. The Strategy ----------------- How to do what and where to do it. *** Offensive Moves: Fade-a-way- a very good way to get a shot off is to do a fade-a-way. You can never get blocked and it almost always gets you points. The best place to use this move is either on the baseline where you can fake (by taping []) and shoot or fake and drive. Another good spot to use this is at the top of the key. Crossover- Use this move when you need to penetrate to the basket. Pick one side of the defender and when you get close hit the "O" button. Spin- Spin past a defender, use just like the crossover. Game strategy- What I like to do for defense is put the game tempo on very high and put offensive and defensive rebounding on really high that way my players go for the ball with more intensity. Then I match up good players with good players and bad players with bad players. I try to score in all ways too: shooting three-pointers, dunks, penetration lay-ups, mid-range jump shooting and baseline drives, as well as post-up moves with my centers and power forwards. Then whenever I score a point I get and play tight defense on the other teams point guard so the in-bounds passer has a hard time passing it in. Then when he tries to pass it in I simple steal it and pass or shoot for antoher easy two points.* *Picking off passes is an important part in this game. You should NOT play your opponent hard on D if he does not have the ball. You should have "court awareness" Where I can see one part of the court while paying attention to the other part. You have to anticipate where your opponent will pass the ball. If you play on Pro or All-Star, you have to get a hand in your opponents face when he shoots, if you don't the computer will make every shot--as you'll soon find out... --------------------------- 4d. How to run Fast Breaks --------------------------- Follow these steps to fast break more often and easier. The first and foremost part of the fast break is the point guard. You should have a speedy and fast PG (in the high 90's) and a good rebounding squad. Afterall you can't run a fast break without getting the ball first. Okay, once your PG has the ball press TRIANGLE and look up-floor for open teammates. When your playing as a point guard you need to be unselfish so look ahead to open players on your team and pass to them, hopefully they will be running the left and right lanes down the court. Once another player has the ball, like a SG or SF then try to go diagonally to the basket from an angle from where you get the ball that way you have a higher chance of getting a good shot off and/or two points. Another option with the fast break is by changing the likelihood of your team running a FB. You can raise or lower the bar in the "coaching" section on the start menu. But be careful because if you raise the bar all the way your team will become extremly tired very often and you will probably end up losing the game when all is said and done. Just a note of caution for you... ------------------------------------------- 5. Mike Miller from Orlando Magic to Memphis Grizzlies for Drew Gooden and Gordon Giricek. ----------------------- 6. Street ball Time!!! ----------------------- Streetball is one of, if not THE, coolest and most often played features of NBA 2K3. It's great because you can play your friends in a good ol' 3 on 3 game and you get to pick anyone in the NBA today for your team. You can also play 5 on 5, 4 on 4, and 2 on 2, but unfortunatly they don't have a 1 on 1 feature, I really wanted them to add this, but oh well, maybe next year. Streetball is a great way to learn how to play basketball without the rules and violations. ---------------------------- 6a. How to play StreetBall! ---------------------------- Streetball is really fun if you know how to do it. Follow these instructions: 1. Dunking Keep in mine that it's easier to block dunk's due to the fact that there are no shooting, blocking, or charging fouls. If you're a big center or other player you can just block everything that comes near the basket. 2. The crossover, is a bit easier. The crossover is a bit easier now due to the fact that there are less players. In 3 on 3, if you got two guys blocking you, it's better to pass. Knowing when, and when not to crossover can be a big success factor, so try to figure it out. 3. Always go for the steal, since you cannot be called for a reach-in foul in streetball mode MAKE SURE YOU TRY TO STEAL AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE! 4. Statistics show everything about how your team and individuals played in the game, including points, blocks, steal, FGA and FGM, 3PM and 3PA. These are important to playing streetball as they tell everything about the game. So pay attention to your streetball stats next time you play. Fast Breaks: 'Breaks are an hugely important part of winning street games, especially on the internet games, and when you play your friends in multiplayer. Blocks: To score you need the ball, blocks are easier so go for them more often, but not as often as steals. Dunks: Dunk as much as you can and don't take many three pointers, unless it's part of your main strategy and you're comfortable taking them. Cross, spin do whatever you have to do to win the basketball game, if it can be called that. In exhibition there were players to block you even if you got past the guy who was guarding you. In 2 on 2, unless the guy's REALLY stupid, he's gonna be guarding the lone player, so generally, you'll need to worry about getting past one guy. OR if the guy tries to block you, one player should be open, pass to him (unless he's like really far back and is not good at threes, or to do to get to the hoop. ------------- 7. Traveling: If you attempt a shot, you have to release it (or pass it) before you land, otherwise you'll be called for traveling. Penalty: Other team gets ball. 2. Backcourt Violation: This means that you crossed the half-court line and then tried to step back across to the other side. Once you cross the line you can't go back or this violation will be called. Penalty: Other team gets ball out of bounds 3. Out of Bounds: You lost ball out of bounds either vertically or horizontally, but either way it means the ball was lost out of bounds or the person with the ball stepped out of bounds. Penalty: Other team gets the ball out of bounds 4. 8 second half-court clock: Once you inbound the ball in the backcourt, you have 8 seconds (it used to be 10) to get the ball onto the other half, otherwise you'll be called for an 8 second half-court clock violation. Penalty: Other team gets ball out of bounds 5. 5 second inbound clock: You have 5 seconds to inbound the ball. If you don't inbound the ball in this time, you will be called for this violation. Penalty: Other team gets ball out of bounds 6. 3 Seconds in the key: If you are in the key (area near the basket) for 3 seconds or more then you will be called for this violation. Penalty: Other team gets ball out of bounds 7. Defensive 3 second violation: On defense, you can't stay in the key more then 3 seconds without guarding an offensive player or else you'll be called for this violation. Penalty: Other team gets one free throw and the ball out of bounds 8. Foul Out: If any player on the court gets 6 fouls in a game they will "foul out" and not be able to play anymore. Penalty: The player that is fouled out cannot play the rest of the game 9. Charging/Blocking: Charging: Charging is if you knock over another player during a dunk, lay-up, or just plain running anywhere on the court. You must be standing completely still for a charge.* *A charge is where your player has to be standing completely still in a set position (holding L1) OUTSIDE of the half circle that is in the key, a players foot may not be on that line if you want a charge. If it is the call will be a blocking foul. Penalties: A CHARGING FOUL IS AGAINST THE OFFENSE, while a BLOCKING FOUL IS AGAINST THE DEFENSE. A foul is called against the player who committed the foul. In a charging situation, the ball is turned over, in a blocking call, the opposing team gets two free throws (one if the shot went in) or gets pocession of the ball if the charging foul occured away from the basket. 10. Reaching In Foul: When a player is attempting to steal the ball he can only touch the ball. If the player touches any other part of the opponent, then, you'll be called for reaching in. 11. Pushing: When you push another player it's called an "intentenal foul". If your team is down by 1 with 5 seconds to go and the other team has the ball you need to push him to stop the clock. But it is a violation. Penalties: 1. Other team gets ball. 2. Foul will be called against the player. 3. two Free Throws if you're over the foul limit. 12. Shooting Foul: If a player who's attempting a block touches anything but the ball, he is called for this foul. Penalties: A foul is called against the player who did it. The player fouled gets two free throws or one if his shot went in the hoop anyway. 13. Goaltending: After a shot is released you can't touch it before it touches the rim. If you do you will be called for this violation. Note: It can be called on both offense and defense so be careful... Penalty: The shot counts 14. Shot Clock: This violation means that the ball did not hit the rim within 24 seconds of you getting it in-bounded. You must shoot the ball and have it hit rim before the 24 second clock gets to 0. Penalty: Other team gets the ball out of bounds ---------------------- 8c. Codes and Secrets ---------------------- All of the codes from 2K2 have been confirmed to work in 2K3. To access the code menu, from the main menu, enter the "options" menu. From there, enter the "gameplay" menu. One there, hold left on the control pad, right on the analog stick, and press start. Exit game play and go down to the new "code"s menu to enter codes. (Note that codes are case-sensitive) MEGASTARS- Enter MEGASTARS as a case-sensitive code to unlock the Sega Sports, Visual Concepts, and Team 2K3 in exhibition and street modes. SPRINGER- Enter SPRINGER as a case-sensitive code to see trash in the streets. Note: This does not work in the gym. DUOTONE- Enter DUOTONE as a case-sensitive code to have your player in color with all other players in black and white. Hint: Easy lay-up: While doing a dunk, press Square in the air to do an easy lay-up (similar to how the Computer does it) -------------- 8d. Questions -------------- Ggoma928 asks: Who is better Kobe Bryant or Tracy Mcgrady? This is a very arguable subject. Many people will say it's T-MAC, others will say it's Kobe. Statistically Tracy Mcgrady is the better player. He avereges more points, rebounds, and assists per game than Kobe Bryant and his team is playing better then the Lakers, too. My personal pick: T-mac is the better overall player. In the NBA 2K3: Kobe Bryant. kaneloBoY5 asks: What does NBA stand for?
