Aircraft [0005] ############################################################################### Yup, this section is what this Guide is all about, aircraft! I'll cover as much as I can about the aircraft in the game. Not much else needs to be said... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I. Gladiator [0006] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Gloster Gladiator was the last biplane fighter built for use in the RAF but it served on many different war fronts until 1943 (it finished out the war as a trainer) It fought in many campaigns including Norway, Finland, Russia, Malta, North Africa, Greece, Egypt and France and even had a version designed for use by the Fleet air arm called the 'Sea Gladiator' How Acquired: - Pre-owned Aircraft Type: - Fighter Country of Origin: - Great Britain +----------------------------+ | Before Arcade Mode Upgrade | +--------------+-----+-------+ | Speed | 3 | +--------------+-----+ | Acceleration | 3.5 | +--------------+-----+ | Agility | 5 | +--------------+-----+ | Firepower | 2 | +--------------+-----+ | Hit Points | 1 | +--------------+-----+------+ | After Arcade Mode Upgrade | +--------------+-----+------+ | Speed | 3 | +--------------+-----+ | Acceleration | 4 | + 1.5 +--------------+-----+ | Agility | 5 | +--------------+-----+ | Firepower | 2 | +--------------+-----+ | Hit Points | 1 | +--------------+-----+ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- II. Hurricane I [0007] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Hurricane combined a biplane structure with a monoplane layout. The fuselage was a braced steel tube construction, with wooden frames and fabric covering. The wing was covered in metal, except on the first production aircraft, and was relatively thick. The Hurricane was inferior to the best contemporary fighters, but sturdy, reliable and easy to produce in quantity. Most RAF fighters during the Battle of Britain were Hurricanes. Later models were used as ground attack aircraft, because they were obsolete as fighters. Some Mk.IIs even became anti-tank aircraft with two 40mm cannon. 14533 were built, a number of these in Canada with Packard Merlin engines. Me 110 C [0008] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Messerschmitt Bf 110 was an aircraft of very mixed fortunes. It has often been criticized for its failure during the Battle of Britain, while its successes in other fields have been largely ignored. Yet, this aircraft that did not match up to Luftwaffe expectations managed to serve Germany throughout the Second World War in long-range escort fighter, fighter-bomber, reconnaissance, ground attack and night fighter roles. Spitfire I [0009] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- An uncompromised, fast and maneuverable fighter. The remarkable thin elliptical wing made the Spitfire capable of very high speeds. It served as first-line fighter throughout WWII in increasingly fast and powerful versions, first with the Merlin, later with the Griffon engine. The Spitfire was continuously changed to meet all kinds of treats and demands, as low- and high altitude fighter, tropicalized, navalized, or equipped as unarmed photo-reconnaissance aircraft. Probably the most famous military aircraft ever. 20351 built. The RAF retired its last Spitfires -- PR Mk. 19 recce aircraft -- in 1954. Me 109 E [0010] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Bf109 was the Luftwaffe's standard fighter throughout WWII, and the production of the Bf 109 was larger than that of any other fighter. It was a quite revolutionary design, the smallest aircraft that could be built around a powerful engine. Advantages were good performance and handling, and a simple construction; disadvantages were restricted vision, bad landing characteristics, and the inability to carry heavy armament without adverse affects on handling. The E was one of the best fighters in the world, on a par with the Spitfire; the F was a fine fighter with limited armament; the G suffered from detoriated handling. The K was the last series-produced model. Some extreme developments, elongated, with longer wings and Jumo engines, never reached service. Projects to replace the 109 all failed. Approx 35000 built. Czechoslovakia and Spain continued production of developments after WWII. Swordfish [0012] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Swordfish, a torpedo-carrying plane primarily carried on board British aircraft carriers, played a vital part in the destruction of the Bismarck in May 1941. The Swordfish was a bi-plane and by the standards of World War Two, the plane was slow and a veteran. However, when required to do so, the Swordfish carried quite a punch. Ju 87 Stuka [0014] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 'Stuka' or 'Sturzkampfflugzeug' was the general German terminology for dive-bombers, but the Ju 87 with its inverted gull wing, and fixed-undercarriage was the most famous and feared of all. The Ju 87 was ugly, sturdy, accurate, but very vulnerable to enemy fighters; it's use demanded air superiority. But its effectiveness in destroying fortifications or ships, or just scaring people, was undoubted. On the eastern front the last Ju 87 versions were employed as anti-tank aircraft with underwing 37mm guns. Over 5700 Stuka's built. Me 110 E [0016] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Messerschmitt Bf 110 was an aircraft of very mixed fortunes. It has often been criticized for its failure during the Battle of Britain, while its successes in other fields have been largely ignored. P40C Warhawk [0017] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The P-40 was a development of the P-36 with a liquid-cooled engine, known to the manufacturer as Hawk 81 and to the British as Tomahawk. It suffered from the obsoleteness of the basic design. The P-40 was never the equal of its opponents, but nevertheless served throughout WWII. It most famous user was the AVG, better known as the 'Flying Tigers', a group of American pilots hired by China. The P-40D model introduced a strongly modified nose and a new engine; this version was known as Hawk 87 to the manufacturer and Kittyhawk to the British. The P-40 was sturdy and had good diving characteristics, but was outperformed by modern fighters, despite continuous improvement. Later P-40s had lengthened fuselages, a lighter structure, and even Packard V-1650 Merlin engines. 13738 were built. Beaufighter [0018] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Before the advent of the Second World War, the multi-engined two-seat fighter had received sporadic attention in most countries, but as the fighter was envisaged primarily as a day interceptor, a task which could be fulfilled most effectively by the less expensive single seat single-engined machine, little real effort was placed behind the development of the longer-ranging, heavier combat aircraft, except in Germany where the long-range strategic fighter received close attention from the mid-thirties, resulting in the Messerschmitt Me 110. Britain's lack of long-range heavy fighters, when the war started, was a source of acute embarrassment to the RAF single-engined interceptors, such as the Hurricane and Spitfire lacked the endurance for effective standing patrols, and it was soon discovered that the heavy long-range fighter would be invaluable to perform a wide variety of tasks. The result was a piece of true British improvisation —- the Bristol Beaufighter, which entered service a year after the outbreak of war, at a time when it was most sorely needed. Devastator [0019] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Upon its introduction, the Devastator was the most modern and effective torpedo bomber perhaps in the world, the design often referred to as "radical". There were a number of "firsts" associated with the TBD; the "Devastator" was the first monoplane design ordered for service with the US Navy; it was the first with hydraulic (as opposed to "manual") folding wings; it was the first "all metal" aircraft ordered by the Navy. The carriers Saratoga, Enterprise, Lexington, Wasp, Hornet, Yorktown and Ranger were all equipped with the Devastator as the standard torpedo bomber. And, although Devastator production totaled only 129 aircraft, it achieved a notoriety completely out of proportion to its numbers. D3A1 Val [0020] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On December 7, 1941, the Japanese Imperial Navy launched 353 aircraft from six carriers, in a surprise attack, against United States military installations on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. The aircraft included Mitsubishi A6M2s (Zero), Nakajima B5Ns (Kate) and Aichi D3As. The Aichi D3A led the first wave of attacks and was the first Japanese aircraft to drop bombs on American targets. 129 Aichi D3A aircraft were used as part of the Japanese task force that attacked Pearl Harbor. Despite its obsolescence, the D3A took part in all major Japanese carrier operations in the first ten months of the war after the attack on Pearl harbor. Before the attack on Pearl Harbor, they saw only limited action from land bases in China and Indo-China. F2A Buffalo [0021] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The first monoplane fighter to enter service with the U.S. Navy was designed and built by a company which had only ventured into the aviation industry in 1932. Nevertheless, the company's two design engineers, Dayton T. Brown and R.D. MacCart proved that their ideas on monoplane design were better thought out than some. In June 1940 VF-3 Fighter Squadron aboard the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga became the first squadron to receive the Navy's first carrier-borne monoplane fighters. B5N2 Kate [0022] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Nakajima B5N2, or Kate as the Allies called her, was the best torpedo bomber in the world before the war with America, and during the first year or so of the war. Rock solid stability, extremely low wing loading, and impressive ordnance load, including carrying the exceptional Japanese Torpedoes of the time all add up to an exceptional plane. The Kate is a pleasure to take off and land with on a carrier. Like it's carrier-mate, the Val, the Kate has a 50mph stall speed, allowing her to have only a 20mph takeover speed while approaching a carrier. This of course is a tremendous help in landing. The low stall speed has another bonus, it allows an extremely slow speed for dropping the torpedo, the American torpedo bombers used inferior Torpedoes that had much narrower deployment parameters and the planes deploying them had much higher stall speeds requiring higher deployment speeds. A6M Zero [0024] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The A6M came as a shock to the allied in 1941 -- this despite earlier reports of its appearance in China. For the first time, a carrier fighter had been built that outperformed landplanes. The A6M was fast, extremely maneuverable, and had an impressive endurance. But this performance had been achieved by the light construction of the aircraft, and this was the undoing of the type when more powerful allied fighters appeared. Development was unable to keep up with the exigencies of the time, and most of the 10964 built had to fight an increasingly superior opposition. Boulton-Paul Defiant [0025] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Often maligned as a failure, the Boulton Paul Defiant found a successful niche as a night-fighter during the German 'Blitz' on London, scoring a significant number of combat kills before being relegated to training and support roles. The Boulton Paul company first became interested in powered gun turrets when it pioneered the use of a pneumatic-powered enclosed nose turret in the Boulton Paul Overstand biplane bomber. The company subsequently brought the rights to a French-designed electro-hydraulic powered turret and soon became the UK leaders in turret design. Ki 43 Hayabusa [0026] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa (Peregrine Falcon) was numerically the most important fighter used by the Japanese Army Air Force during the Pacific War. It remained in production from the beginning of the Pacific War until its end in August of 1945. In many ways, it was a transitional type, bridging the gap between the lightly-loaded fighter monoplanes of the late 1930s with their fixed undercarriages and open cockpits and the higher-powered heavy fighters of the early 1940s with their retractable undercarriages and enclosed cockpits. Its appearance was a complete surprise to the Allies, and the fighter proved to be superior in performance to most of its opponents during the first year of the Pacific War. Most of the Japanese Army's aces established the larger part of their scores while flying this airplane. The Ki-43 is often confused with its contemporary, the famed Mitsubishi A6M Reisen (Zero Fighter) of the Japanese Navy, and was often misidentified as a "Zero" early in the war. SB2C Helldiver [0027] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This large, heavy, impressive and powerful dive-bomber was intended as an improvement on the SBD Dauntless, which it was to replace. However, during the SB2C's development it became apparent that there were serious problems with its design. Combat experience, especially at the Battle of the Philippine Sea, revealed that the Dauntless was in fact the superior aircraft. The Helldiver's handling was poor - in particular it had unsatisfactory low-speed stability, and dangerously poor stalling characteristics. It was also unstable in a high-speed dive, and therefore a less accurate bomber than the SBD. SB2A Buccaneer [0028] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Having just completed the design of the SBA scout-bomber, Brewster set about to produce a more effective aircraft with heavier armament, increased bomb load and higher performance. Unfortunately, performance was far below that anticipated, and the larger, much heavier aircraft lacked maneuverability. The British were supplied SB2As under lend-lease (designated "Bermudas" by the British), but they also found them completely unsuitable for combat operations. As a result, SB2As only saw second-line service as target towing and training aircraft. P-82 Twin Mustang [0029] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The P-82 came about as a result of a USAAF requirement for a very long range escort fighter for operations in the Pacific, especially to escort the B-29s all the way to Japan and back. The purpose of having two pilots was as a relief against fatigue on the long overwater missions. Only 20 of the 500 ordered had been built before the war's end brought a cancellation to the contracts, but 250 more were built in 1946. Part of this order was for a night fighter version (with a radar operator instead of a second pilot) which was made to replace the Northrop P-61 Black Widow. The P-82 was renamed the F-82 in 1948, and a U.S. F-82 shot down the first enemy aircraft of the Korean War. J2M Raiden [0030] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The J2M was designed by Jiro Horikoshi, creator of the Mitsubishi A6M "Zero". It was strictly a local-defense interceptor intended to counter the threat of high-altitude bomber raids, and thus relied on speed, climb performance, and armament at the expense of maneuverability. The J2M was a sleek but stubby craft with its over-sized Mitsubishi Kasei engine buried behind a long cowling, cooled by an intake fan and connected to the propeller with a long extension shaft. Pilot visibility was poor. DH Mosquito [0031] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The de Havilland Mosquito was a twin-engined aircraft of plywood monocoque construction, designed originally as a fast, unarmed light bomber. This concept was regarded as an aberration by the authorities, but the performance of the Mosquito silenced the critics. At night it operated with impunity over Germany to the end of the war, because the Luftwaffe never had a nightfighter fast enough to intercept it. The Mosquito also served with distinction as fighter-bomber, reconnaissance aircraft and nightfighter. It was one of the finest aircraft of WWII, with a versatility only matched by the German Junkers Ju 88. The nightfighter versions remained in production until 1947. N1K Shiden [0032] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Kawanishi N1K2-J Shiden Kai (Violet Lightning Modified) is generally rated as being one of the finest land-based fighter planes fielded by the Japanese during the Pacific War. It was actually superior to most of the carrier-based US Navy fighters that opposed it, and could hold its own against even the later models of the P-51 Mustang. Unfortunately for the Japanese, the aircraft was available too late and in insufficient numbers to affect the outcome of the war. The N1K2-J had a rather curious evolution. It actually originated as a floatplane fighter designed for offensive operations, and evolved in stages to produce what was perhaps the finest land-based fighter plane available to any of the combatants in the Pacific War. The Fw 190D-series used a liquid-cooled Junkers engine instead of the radial BMW, and had increased span and length. The Fw 190D was a very good high-altitude interceptor, equal to the P-51D or Spitfire IX and without the altitude limitations of the Fw 190A. It was the stepping-stone to the Ta 152. Typhoon [0035] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This massive new fighter, the heaviest and most powerful single-seat single-engined warplane envisaged at the time of its design, was to suffer a long gestatory period. It was to be pressed into operational service before it was fully developed and, in consequence, acquire a worse reputation among its pilots than that of any fighter preceding it. It was fated to be rarely employed in the interceptor role for which it was originally conceived. Yet, despite its vicissitudes, it was to blossom into one of the most formidable weapons evolved during the Second World War. It was a close-support fighter that was to turn the scales in many land battles and upset many conceptions of land warfare. The British reluctantly accepted North American's proposal to design a new fighter for them, instead of license-building P-40's, and the USAAF was at first not interested at all. The P-51 was a clean and very refined design, with a laminar flow wing and carefully positioned radiator bath. The early P-51, with Allison V-1710, engine, was an excellent low-altitude reconnaissance fighter, but had low performance above 15000ft. After reengining with the R.R. Merlin, the P-51B was one of the best fighters of WWII. It proved to be the ideal fighter to escort the bomber force on the long missions over Germany. The P-51D sacrificed some speed for the introduction of a 'bubble' hood, offering much better view. The P-51F, G and J versions were lightweight developments, with only a superficial resemblance to the original Mustang; the P-51H was more directly related to the P-51D, but powered by the more powerful V-1650-9 engine. While Hawker and the RAF were struggling to turn the Typhoon into a useful aircraft, Hawker's Sidney Camm and his team were rethinking the design. The Typhoon's thick, rugged wing was partly to blame for some of the aircraft's performance problems, and as far back as March 1940 a few engineers had been set aside to investigate the new "laminar flow" wing, which the Americans had implemented in the P-51 Mustang. B-17 Flying Fortress [0041] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The four-engined B-17 was designed as a heavily-armed, long-range medium bomber. It became the mainstay of the USAF bomber offensive over Europe. The B-17 had a long range, and was easy to fly except when -- as was often the case -- it was overloaded; but its bomb-carrying capacity on long range was very limited. Even the 13 machine guns of the B-17G were not enough to fight off enemy fighters, but on the other hand the B-17 could have a lot of hits and still bring its crew home. The Spitfire was continuously changed to meet all kinds of treats and demands, as low- and high altitude fighter, tropicalized, navalized, or equipped as unarmed photo-reconnaissance aircraft. Though the Messerschmitt Me 262 Schwalbe was also under development at the same time, the Meteor actually beat the Me 262 to operational status by a reported mere number of days. Along with being the first jet fighter in service, the system also held the distinction of being the only Allied jet aircraft to see any form of combat in the Second World War. Kikka [0046] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The project began in September 1944, when Nakajima was entrusted with the development of a jet powered signal seat bomber. Designed by Kazuo Ohno and Kenichi Matsumura, the aircraft was to be able to deliver a 500 kg bomb at 700 km/h with a range of 900 km as well as having folding wings to enable it to be hidden in caves and tunnels. The engines used were Ne-20 turbojets which were hastily built, based on the BMW 003 turbojet. Two prototypes were built between June and August 1945. The first prototype was ready by the beginning of August 1945, it's first flight being on the 7/8/1945 (one day after the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima). Four days later the aircraft had a serious accident. This caused the test program to be stopped whilst the second prototype was being built. At the same time 18 other Kikka aircraft were in various stages of production, including the two seat trainer "Kikka-K". Hs-129 [0047] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Henschels were already in operational service by 1944. The New Luftwaffe Schlachtflieger, the specialists close support formations, were an all important element of the Luftwaffe against the Russians. The weapons carried by some Hs129's, could knock out even the mighty Josef Stalin tanks. As with all the weapons of the Luftwaffe, the Hs129s were too late and too little to stave off defeat. Many have speculated however, that the Luftwaffe close-support units delayed the Russians by months. While this may or may not be true, one must give the Hs129 credit where it is due. What it lacked in maneuverability and speed, (the lack of speed making it easier to attack) the Henschel made up in armor and firepower. The Hs129 was also successor to the Hs123, which was finally phased out in 1944, after a service career that lasted since the Spanish Civil War. B-25 Mitchell [0048] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The most built and used medium bomber of the war, a shoulder-wing monoplane. The B-25 was easily recognizable: The inboard sections of the wing had dihedral, but the outboard sections not, and the B-25 had twin fins. Some versions had a glazed nose for the bombardier, while others had a metal nose filled with machine guns or even a 75mm cannon. The 'Doolittle raid' on Tokyo made the B-25 famous. B-25s lend-leased to the USSR continued their service there after WWII, and had the NATO reporting name 'Bank'. 9816 built. Me-163 Komet [0049] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Me 163 was unique: the world's first and only operational rocket-engined fighter. It was built in quite different Me 163A trainer and Me 163B fighter versions. This small tailless aircraft had impressive performance and excellent handling, but its rocket engine and fuel were extremely dangerous. The Me163 was a great technological achievement, but a military disaster, with huge accident losses. It required a lengthy development process and entered the Second World War in a very limited fashion only in 1944. Me 262 [0050] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Me 262 was the world's first operational jet fighter. It was also the best of its generation, with an advanced aerodynamic design. Its development was much delayed, less by political disagreement than by engines troubles, and the Me 262 arrived too late to influence the end of WWII. Even the series aircraft had extremely unreliable and short-lived engines. The few Me 262 used in combat demonstrated their clear superiority, but were unable achieve much more. Around 1430 built. Dornier Do-335 [0051] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Dornier Do 335 Pfeil (or "Arrow") was one of the more unique prop-driven designs of the Second World War. Designed and patented by Doctor Claudius Dornier himself as early as 1937, the Do 335 utilized a concept of mounting one engine forward and another aft on a smooth fuselage with low-monoplane to do away with thrust design flaws encountered by single engine fighters. The result was the pencil-shaped Do 335 design that connected the rear engine via an extended propeller shaft. Both engines were fitted with three propeller blades each. The twin engine design accommodated one pilot in a greenhouse-type canopy that offered good visibility forward, sides and above. A retractable tricycle landing gear was strengthened and forced the Do 335 to appear rather tall when on the ground to accommodate the propeller systems - most notably the rear-mounted one - when taking off. Another interesting design element was in the cruciform tail design which was mounted aft but forward of the rear engine propeller system. Armed with 1 x 30mm cannon and an additional 2 x 15mm cannons, the Do 335 was recorded at speeds upwards of 470 miles per hour. Mini Campaign [0052] ############################################################################### After Choosing one of the two mission types - Bombing or Dogfight - you'll be thrown directly into the middle of a battle. You will be given a ten minute time limit to destroy the specific targets. Your aircraft, your enemies, and the map are predefined. There are six different missions in each type; only the first mission is available at the beginning, and you unlock new missions by completing the existing ones. Test and improve your skills by attempting the Mini Campaign. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I. Bombing Campaign [0053] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For this type, you will be given a fighter bomber, attack, or dive bomber aircraft. You will have to destroy many ground targets that are, most often, firing back. Sometimes it'll be over land, and sometimes over water. For completing the Bombing Mini Campaign you unlock: - Hs-129 - B-25 Mitchell - Bombs, torpedoes, and rockets on all planes upgraded ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- II. Dogfight Campaign [0054] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For this type, you will be given a fighter or fighter bomber and will have to shoot down 20 aircraft before the time expires. The aircraft will be bombers along with fighters attempting to protect the bombers. For completing the Dogfight Mini Campaign you unlock: - Me-163 Komet - Me 262 - Machine guns and cannons on all fighters upgraded ############################################################################### 7. Arcade [0055] ############################################################################### This mode is a very time consuming, repetitive dogfight. You fight alone, and must destroy three waves of twelve aircraft. There are only four aircraft at a time though, once you kill one a new one will spawn until you shoot down twelve of them. You are given two minutes to start, and each aircraft you destroy adds about thirty seconds to your time. Between each wave you get a free repair. Each wave consists of the same aircraft, but they get better with each wave. It is very easy, in my opinion, I never get shot or run out of time. Once completed, your aircraft gets a useful upgrade. ############################################################################### 8. Ace Duel [0056] ############################################################################### Just as the name says, you'll fight an enemy ace flying the same model plane as you. The most vulnerable point in this mode is the beginning, you and your opponent will be flying head on, and your opponent will have excellent accuracy, so if he lines up on you, you might just go down in one pass. Other than that, its pretty easy. I've even had it where my opponent hits a building. Its very quick and can help you improve your skills. Winning unlocks a new skin (paint job) for your plane, to apply it go to your hanger and change it from default to ace. ############################################################################### 9. Flying Tools [0057] ############################################################################### Any special abilities to help you advance through your missions and to make you a better pilot. Such flying tools are your commands, your targeting systems, the follow camera, and your secondary weapons. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I. Squadron Commands [0058] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The commands are made by using the directional buttons: (^) The up button allows you to toggle through different rules of engagement for your whole squadron. Its represented with three arrows: - Formation: The wingmen will attempt to maintain formation and will only engage an enemy if the squadron is under attack. - Attack: The wingmen will engage enemies based on proximity and importance to the mission objective. - Defense: The wingmen will engage enemies based on the threat to the player or themselves. (>) The right button orders Frank to use his "Ace Attack Ability". He will go out and attack any enemy aircraft. He kinda sucks at it though, so don't get too excited. Recharge time required between each use. Its represented with a lightning bolt. (v) The down button orders Tom to use his "Taunt Ability". This makes any enemies engaging you turn away and engage him. This is very useful, unlike Frank's ability, and gives you free time to complete your objective without any enemy on your tail. Recharge time required between each use. Its represented with a sheld. (<) The left button orders Joe to use his "Repair Ability". Joe will send a repair combo for you to enter in order for you to repair your plane. It will consist of four shapes (X, [], /\, O) in a random order. The more you get the more your plane gets repaired. Getting all of them repairs your plane completely. This is also very useful for when your plane is damaged. Later in the campaign though, Joe gets killed and you loose this ability. Recharge time required between each use. Its represented with a wrench. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- II. Targeting [0059] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On your map, there are different symbols for each type of target. They are Differentiated with colors and shapes: - Blue: Your wingmen - Green: Allied targets - Orange: Generic enemies (Not necesary to beat the mission) - Red: Objective targets - Arrow: Air target - Square: Ground target When not viewing the map, but looking in first person, targets are represented accordingly: - Blue: Your wingmen - Green: Allied targets - Orange: Generic enemies (Not necesary to beat the mission) - Red: Objective targets - < >: Air target, these brackets will border the plane - Triangle: Ground Target ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- III. Follow Camera [0060] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The follow camera allows you to view your selected target from any direction. If the target is behind you, you can watch his every move by using the follow camera. To activate the follow camera simply press R2. This feature is great for a dogfight. It allows you to know where he is going so you can make your move earlier, putting you in a good shooting position. It helps a lot, I recommend using it from day one. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IV. Secondary Weapons [0061] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The rockets, bombs, torpedoes, and photos you can shoot using the secondary fire button, L1. These are what you use to take down the big game, and the photos you use for recon missions. You only get one per mission, if you get one at all. - Rockets: When the rockets are available, a reticle appears around the crosshairs. It displays the number of rockets still available. You get ten rockets at once, and after fired, there is a reload time before the rockets come back. - Bombs: A circular reticle apears on the ground marking the exact location of where the bombs will hit. It also displays the number of bombs remaining. The number of bombs you get at a time depends on the mission. - Torpedoes: When the crosshairs are close to the currently selected target, the torpedoing system is displayed. The horizontal line shows the plane's distance from the currently selected target. The vertical line displays the plane's altitude. When both lines turn green, the torpedo can be launched. To get both lines green you must be at the necesary altitude and distance. The symbol under the crosshairs is displayed if the torpedo is loaded and ready to be fired. You only get one torpedo at a time. You can only use torpedos on naval targets. - Photos: When the selected target is in the area delimited by the markers, the markers turn from black to green. The simplest way to do this is to fly at low speed toward the target. Once the plane is in the photo-shooting range, the upper reticle also turns from black to green. When both the markers and the reticle are green, you can shoot photos by holding the secondary fire button until the shooting guage at the right fills up. ############################################################################### 10.
