Dungeon explorer 2 faq By Jeremy Forrest Jforrest16@netzero.com INTRODUCTION: This is a FAQ for dungeon explorer 2. This game is the 2nd in the series. It is an excellent series to say the least. I highly recommend it. This was the turbo grafx 16's solution to gauntlet. This game blows gauntlet out of the water!! Please note this is a FAQ, and not a complete "step by step" walkthrough! I feel it is more enjoyable to actually play a game than to take 3 steps and read some more. Enjoy the game! Some simple things are best left unsaid. Use that brain! LEGAL MUMBO JUMBO: If you want to use my faq on a website just email me and let me know. Just don't make any money off of it. And NEVER change it in any way, shape, or form! THINGS TO COME IN THE FUTURE: When and if I decide to play the game again I will try to find the secret weapons for the characters I missed. Also I need to finish the special character magic chart. I may also go more in depth and give better directions in the labrynths of the game. I felt all the so called mazes were really easy though. I can't recall one time in the game when i was actually lost. STUFF I WILL GIVE YOU CREDIT FOR: If you stumble across anything in the game I missed I will be more than happy to give credit where it's due. I am guessing I have missed a few special weapons. I am really confident I found all the bosses and the hidden characters, but there may be one hiding somewhere. Arena information! SPECIAL THANKS: Jon Maxwell vegetagallitgun@hotmail.com Thanks to Jon for getting very lucky and stumbling on to BE's special weapon for the whole 3 minutes I played the game with him. Good job being lucky!!! CHARACTERS AND CLASS CHANGE: Please note the number next to the intelligence stat is the stat after the character has his or her class upgrade. Basically, a class upgrade consists of one intelligence point, and a cool new gear. All of the special character with a * next to them do not get a class upgrade. They have a special weapon hidden in the game. This is Gayan. He is not a special character, nor is he an enemy. Gayan is.... Well, I can't really tell you that. You will find out at the end of the game. He is good at giving meaningless information though. I think it was kind of cool to talk to him through the game. It gave the game a little extra flavor. Some short little fat dude, just standing in the most dangerous places known to man. Gayan must be the most hard core character in the game! What you play for is your life. Simple rules, the player closest to 21 wins! For those of you who may not know, face cards are worth 10 points each. Aces are worth 1 or 11. And everything else is worth what ever the number is. Results: Blackjack win +2 lives Normal win +1 life Death win -1 life Draw +-0 life Sounds simple, but it is not. Later in the game you will really want to become good at this game. So start playing now to practice! THE ARENA: Once you reach the castle town of Ardeen in the game, in the castle you will notice a place called the Arena. I am not sure exactly what this is all about. There are five crests on the floor. I believe this is something for very strong players. Also I think this is a five player only feature. I really wish I could try this out. Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated! TELEPORTATION: Throughout the game in the towns you will notice a guy. This is usually a magician looking guy or death. They will ask you if you would like to teleport for one white potion. This is very helpful and white potions are abundant. Give it a try and you can see the world map! THE BEGINNING, CASTLE SOLIS: As the game starts you are in the castle of the first town Solis. Exit the king's room and head up. Go outside on the roof and head left then up to get a potion. Exit the castle and head left around the side of the castle to receive another potion. Ok, now you can wonder around town if you like, talk to people and maybe play some blackjack with death if you feel lucky. FIRST THINGS FIRST: The first thing we're going to do is a side quest. Head southeast from town and take the Widow Woods path to the right. Follow it till you come to the dead end and shoot the trees to find the path you want. It's the left one. Follow this path to the cave entrance. This room is a small detour. Don't forget the lifeseed. It is south of the guy. Exit this place and go outside. Now go north to the first castle in the game. This is a straight shot. When you find the boss "Abdominale Riva", he looks like a spider. After defeating him you will see a small crystal. WAIT! It will change colors. Look at the bottom of the screen at your stats. Whichever stat you want to increase wait till the crystal changes that color and grab it. Exit the boss room and you will see Gwen, she is your first secret character. Now go back to the boss room and fall through the hole. Keep heading south and make your way back to the castle town. For future reference remember whenever you are weak to hit up the bar in every town. You can go there to heal up. Remember this in the future, as I will not tell you again. PART 2: KILL THE WOLVES TO GET THE RAFT: Ok, Now it's time to head south again from the castle town. Except this time we are taking the Demon's Claw path. Follow this straight path and enter the cave. Just keep going on this path. It is simple. You will eventually make it to the boss, the 2 wolves and a flame. Defeat them and grab the crystal. Now head south to exit this level. Head back to the castle town, and go east till you see the man with the raft. Talk to him and he will take you to a new area. A SMALL QUEST TO MEET MIR, THE WATCHER OF THE SEA: Slightly out of the way is a neat little side quest to meet Mir, the watcher of the sea. As soon as you exit the raft head south. Follow this path and eventually you will get to a simple labrynth area. There is a power shield here, don't miss it! Eventually you will make it to Mir. He will explain that you need to come back when you get the Ora's orb, and he will give you a small crystal. After talking to him take the stairs he leaves and head back to where you were dropped off by the raft man. From here take the north "Norville" path. Once you get to the stairs, enter and emerge outside after a small detour. Now you will see a cave, enter it to fight another optional boss. He is a tree. Very easy, grab the crystal and leave. Keep following the path to Norville. PART 3: NORVILLE, DARKWOODS, AND THE WITCH BEL: First business in norville is to explore, and talk to everyone if you like. Then you need to head out of town to the west into the Darkwoods. Two options here, go south and get the items or go west and skip them. The're really not important, but it's up to you. The path you are looking for is to the southwest. First go west then south. Or go south enter the stairs, and come out and find the other set. Theres two sets of stairs. Take either one. Once in the stairs head east and find another set of stairs. This is where you will find Bel the witch. This is the first boss that even is a slight challenge. After defeating Bel you will be teleported outside. South goes to Vern (your destination). And east goes back to Norville. Go to Vern and talk to everyone. Eventually you will find a house with a glowing book, get it, it's the Dark Maze Permit. Permit in hand it's time to head back to Norville. PART 4 MYST CAVE SIDE QUEST: Back at Norwood, with the permit, head north out of town. Take the east path to the Myst Cave. Here is a small maze with teleports. It is very simple and you will figure it out in about two minutes. At the end is the next secret character... Shun. THE DARK MAZE: The path to Dark Maze is north of Norville. Take the left path this time. It is the opposite path you took to reach the Myst Cave. This is the first labrynth you're going to enter that is kind of big. However, all you have to do is just keep going forward through whatever teleport you like. I don't think it's really possible to get lost here. I made it through my very first time in about 5 minutes. At the end of this weak maze is an even weaker boss, the minotaur named Mynos. Man, he is so easy. Slaughter him and watch the movie. VILLAGE OF ARDEEN: Exit Norville by taking the east exit out of town. If you noticed earlier a guard was blocking the path. Now it seems to be open. Anyway, go on in and take the very short path to Ardeen. Once in Ardeen do the exploring thing if you like. There is a blackjack table here so get some practice in if you're not in a hurry. After a little exploring head into the castle. Head straight up and talk to the king. Accept his offer and get the small crystal. Remember to wait for it to change into the color you want! Exit the king's chambers and immediately head left. Take the downstairs path on the left. Inside is the next special character BE. And what a great character he is, probably the best all around! Now it is time to leave this town and head to the next area of business. THE VAMPIRE CASTLE: Ok, your next path is in the southwest corner of Ardeen. Follow the winding path all the way to the next castle. You will know you're there because you will see a graveyard around it. Two entrances here, one is to the left through the well. The other is the front door. Again, this is a very simple area. Don't forget the lifeseed on the second floor! Once you make it to the boss "Dracula" you are in for a fight. He is actually a challenge, well sort of. He is definitely the coolest boss so far in the game. So enjoy the fight! After your victory claim your prize and exit the room. If you notice now there is a piece of the banister missing on the bottom of the screen. Go ahead and walk down that to fall to the first floor, right next to the entrance of the castle. THE SHRINE: Head northwest out of Ardeen, west then north. Take the right path that leads to the shrine. This is where the game tends to get rough. The main thing to remember from now on is "take your time" the last thing you want to do is get trapped in the middle of enemies! Enter the shrine and go down the stairs. Now take the left stairs and get the crown if you want, or just go to the right set of stairs. You will see spike barriers that roll toward you, shoot these to destroy them. Also, take your time! Don't run or you will die! 1st floor: Take the northwest stairs to talk to a guy. Or skip those stairs and just head directly east from them and then south to the stairs. 2nd floor: Go right 3rd floor: Head north, there are two good items here, one is to left and one is to right. Get them both! Make way to northwest stairs. Xxx floor: Fight Gorp 4th floor: shoot the statues and exit north in the middle. 5th floor: take right path 6th floor: take stairs south 7th floor: Take stairs to sanctuary, talk to goddess and don't forget two potions on each side of her. Exit sanctuary to south outside. GET YURI: Outside of the sanctuary take the southwest path and follow it southwest until you reach the ruins. Once inside the ruins take the door to the north and get Yuri. Now exit and take the stairs out the way you came in, and head north to Brem. BREM AND THE LIFE TREE: Explore and wander around as usual. If you have Gwen you can talk to a guy and learn the crescent Moon spell. After talking to everyone head down the river and don't forget the HP shield right before the boss. Eventually you will make it to the boss Ulak the ugly. Defeat him and follow the path till you enter the tree. The tree is very easy, so figure it out. The boss however can be sort of hard if you're low on lives. Defeat him and head west from the tree entrance. THE DESERT SHRINE: Upon entering the desert make your way to a tent in the southwest. Visit the tent to heal up if your low on HP. Exit the tent and head left. Now make your way to a small set of stairs to the far west. Pass the large set of stairs. In here is a boss creature, which is actually kind of hard. Defeat him and take the now open path up the large set of stairs. Before you enter make sure to grab the lifeseed! Inside the desert shrine: 1. Take the right or left set of stairs. 2. Take the stairs directly behind you. 3. Follow path to stairs. 4. Follow path to stairs. 5. Defeat Sku. 6. Take the long path ahead to the Orb boss with the face in the middle. Defeat him. 7. Take another path, till you reach the entrance to a castle. Enter and take the left teleport device 8. Make way to the house and sit back and watch the movie. OUTSIDE THE DESERT SHRINE: If you want you can take the set of stairs to the north and race Tink. And you will definitely lose. Or we can progress forward by going west from here. Once at the waterfall enter it and you will see it's really a cave. This is a very simple cave. Make your way to the end and defeat the boss Karn. He will finally give you the orb we have all been hearing so much about. After defeating him you will end up in a room with a statue. Shoot his arms and take a door. It doesn't matter which you take. Go down the long waterway and eventually end up back outside. This time you are on the left side of the waterfall. Continue south to the next village of Sef. Once in Sef make the usual rounds. But make sure you heal up first! Find the fortune tellers room and the story will progress. Now it is time for a few small side quests. A FEW THINGS YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO: These are three optional quests. I don't think it matters if you do them, but it couldn't hurt I guess. First you need to get Efrem. Go in the bar and get him. Also you must have three black potions. Make your way all the way past the waterfall again, and when you make it to where Tink lives keep heading east. All the way east is a cave where only magic users can enter. Use your three black potions and destroy the door. Talk to the guy to get the invisible potion. I really have no idea what good this is, but I am sure there is a reason for it. Go back to town (not invisible), and this time get BE in the bar. Give him all agility crystals. Now head to Tinks cave. If you defeat Tink in a race you will win a lifeseed, which is pretty useful. The trick is to hope he gets caught in the path of the dog. Now go back to town and this time get Arden. Directly to the right of the waterfall is a guy who will ask for you. And he will open this cave up if you are Arden. Go inside and you will see two men. The door to the left triggers a little scene, leaving you an opportunity to get a white potion and a shield. I wish I knew if there was a way to pursue this creature, but I don't. I would guess there has to be a way to get in that room that gets sealed. After all these mini quests go back to Sef and get your regular character so we can continue the real quest. CLASS CHANGE TIME: Now that you have the orb you need to head back to Solis using the white potion teleporter. In case you forgot where Mir was, he is south of where the Solis raft guy drops you off. You can get as many of the characters classes changed as you want, however, all the special characters have no class change. Keep in mind you have to travel back and forth between Mir and Ardeen. Unfortunately Solis does not have an option of changing your character. Walking back and forth between Mir and Ardeen gets old fast. I suggest you just get the characters you want to get and make sure you get Dorz class change! If you want to get every ones class change you should give them a lot of agility and power to make the trip that much quicker. After you have changed every ones class you want, head back to Sef. BACK AT SEF: Head west from Sef and follow the long rocky path ahead of you till you reach a large castle door. Go in here. Floor 1- Take the SW stairs. F2- Take the SE or SW stairs. F3 (roof)- Go in the large door to fight the boss. After the fight, head back to the first floor and take the set of stair to the north on the left side. Talk to Prince Barl. Leave the castle and move west to the cottage and get Xan, the next secret character. Thankfully now the monsters outside are gone and the path is a lot clearer now. Go back to Sef now. XAN'S SPECIAL WEAPON SIDE QUEST: If you remember a while back there was a side quest to get the invisible potion. If you got this you would have seen a beast standing in between a fence right next to the cave that would not let you pass. If you come back here with Xan you can go in to the secret town of Bax. All the way north is the king's house. Enter and talk to him. He will say to talk to your ancestors. Leave and go and stand in front of the large statue in the middle of town and you will receive Xan's hidden weapon. DWARF WOODS: Go to the bar and get Dorz. Head west out of Sef and make your way to the Dwarf woods. This is a nice little maze. There are a lot of signs here. The ones I named are the only ones that matter. Sign H (entrance)- Go south Sign G- West Sign E- South Sign K- West Sign A- North Sign L (leads to boss)- North Beat the boss and head back to Sef. TRIAL VALLEY: Get your normal character and go west out of Sef, right by Dwarf Woods. This time keep west instead of north. I don't know why they call this Trial Valley. There is two lame boss fights and that's about it. Just make your way through here till you get to a path after you defeat both bosses. The path is a southwest exit with two exits. The southern path will take you to the Trial Of Heroes. Which is a waste of time. All you get for doing it is a black potion. Also you must have a strong fighter or you can't enter. The east path will take you to the next village, Helski. HELSKI AND THE LABRYNTH: There's nothing here. Talk to everyone if you want and then make your way south of town to the set of stairs. This is a weak little maze. Find the Gayan and take the stairs right next to him and you're at the boss, which is actually a fight "kind of" for once. Kill the boss and make your way to Mireville. MIREVILLE: First thing in Mireville you will see is a little girl standing next to a house. If you enter this house with BE you will get his special weapon. Really the only thing left to do here is to enter that large hole in the northwest corner. If you have a weak character class you may want to play a little blackjack and get some lives before entering. INSIDE THE HOLE: Ok, this is the road to the end of the game. This is where the game starts to get really hard! I have included a little guide here for this labrynth. If one of the floors just says "teleport" then that is the only teleporter in the room. Ok lets get started! 1F- follow the path given, and when you get to a moving platform that gives you the option of going south or west, take the south path. The rest of this labrynth is a straight shot to the next boss fight. So defeat the boss and then start with the next directions below. 1F- Teleport 2F- Teleport 3F- Middle teleporter 4F- follow path and take top right teleporter 5F- Teleport 6F- Take the southern moving platform and teleport 7F- West teleporter 8F- Teleport 9F- Teleport 10F- South teleporter 11F- Northeast teleporter 12F- You will have to move 2 rocks. Take the teleporter south of the 2nd rock. 13F- Teleport 14F- Defeat Gil the Destroyer and teleport After the fight you are in a new place I like to call hell. It is very hot and you will get burnt a lot. It is a straight shot to Natas. Have fun! THE LAST FIGHT INSIDE THE ICY PYRAMID: After you defeat Natas you will now be in the cold place. This place is no joke. These creatures here will kill you quick. There is a set of stairs to the right where you can play some blackjack and teleport if you want. Or you can change a character. I suggest you get at least a life or two. If you have a weak character class you might want to get ten. The road ahead is very hard! After you're done here you will be heading northwest to the icy pyramid. As soon as you enter you are greeted by the next boss fight with Jin the centaur. After defeating him it is time for the last stretch to Phades. Man this place is hard! Take your time and whatever you do "NEVER" run. You "WILL" die if you attempt to run! This is a straight path to Phades. So all I can say really is take your time, don't die a lot, and good luck! You will need it! THE END: After the fight you get to see the ending. To tell the truth I was not very pleased. Especially after seeing the introduction to the game. What a great game though. BOSS STRATEGY: Difficulty from 1 to 5. One is easiest and 5 is hardest 1. Abdominale Riva in Widow Woods Difficulty: 1 Tips: Just shoot his body. Not his legs 2. Wolves of Demon's Claw Difficulty: 1 1/2 Tips: Stand still, and avoid the flame if in the way. As soon as a wolf jumps out head up or down and immediately turn and shoot. 3. Evil tree on path to Norville Difficulty: 1 Tips: Get in the top left corner and shoot 4. Bell Difficulty: 2 Tips: Just dodge and shoot. Bring a few extra lives if you have trouble. 5. Mynos the minotaur of Dark Maze Difficulty: 1 Tips: Very weak and slow, just shoot from as far away as possible. 6. The Vampire Difficulty: 2 1/2 Tips: Shoot him when he's not spinning and try to keep the bats to a minimum. When he changes forms run and quickly turn and shoot. He will be behind you! 7. Gorp of the shrine Difficulty: 2 Tips: Just dodge his orbs and shoot. 8. Ulak the ugly Difficulty: 2 Tips: when he shoots bubbles shoot him in the mouth. When he starts shooting out of his arms move to the bottom of the screen and shoot to block the shots. Move back up and repeat process. 9. Dragon in the life tree Difficulty 2 Tips: shoot him in the nose. Try to dodge bullets, but it is hard. 10. Monster at desert entrance Difficulty: 2 1/2 Tips: Just try to keep shooting the bugs. Eventually he will cross your path. 11. Sku Difficulty: 1 1/2 Tips: shoot him from behind 12. Giant ball with the face in it Difficulty 3 1/2 Tips: nothing you can really do here but hope you have enough lives. Maybe if you're very fast you can dodge the shots. 13. Karn Difficulty: 3 1/2 Tips: Just dodge the rocks as best as possible and keep shooting. 14. Cyclops Difficulty: 2 Tips: He is weak. Just shoot him. 15. Mortakey Difficulty: 2 1/2 Tips: Just shoot it in the head and dodge the projectiles when it splits and comes back together. 16. Igni Difficulty: 3 1/2 Tips: Your going to get hit, so just make sure it's not by him. Don't worry about the flames. Your main concern is keeping away from Igni and shooting when you get a good distance. 17. Woman face with hair (Trial valley) Difficulty: 2 Tips: Just stand to her side and shoot. 18. Rock man (Trial valley) Difficulty: 2 Tips: Again an easy boss. Just shoot him. 19. Gru Difficulty: 4 Tips: You are just going to have enough lives. It is near impossible to dodge everything. Shoot his tongue. 20. Gil Difficulty: 2 1/2 Tips: Keep your distance and shoot through his projectiles at him. 21. Shad Difficulty: 3 1/2 Tips: Again, keep your distance and shoot. This time dodge the projectiles he reflects back at you. 22. Natas Difficulty: 4 1/2 Tips: Natas is the man! I guess you couldn't expect much less from the dark prince himself. You need to get in the bottom of the screen to the left. You will see a little ridge slightly up and left, stand right there and shoot diagonally. This should keep his hands from getting you. Just don't move, and keep shooting. With a little luck and a few spare live you should win. 23. Jin the centaur man Difficulty: 3 Tips: Just get to the right or left of him and shoot. If he has to walk left or right it takes longer for him to get to you. He can walk diagonally fast. So just stay to the side. 24. Phades Difficulty: 5 Tips: Here he is, the last guy. And he is pretty tough. Keep in mind when I use the terms right and left I am talking about your right or left, not the boss. You want to shoot Phades diagonally. If you stay slightly south of his left hand and barely to the left his hand shots will miss you. Or if things get hot head over by his other hand and follow the same strategy, except slightly to the south and right of his hand, this should give you the edge you need to win. With a strong character you should be able to get him with three lives.
