Thanks ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ____________________| / I. Introduction |xxxxxxxxx) `""""""""""""""""""""| ------------------------------- Hi There! I am proud to reveal my very first FAQ. I'm new at this, so please be patient! This guide, like many things, began simply. While playing, I noticed that occasionally my guys would shrug off things like poison or Sleep Flower. It seemed that some kind of status protection was at work, but the guides already on GameFAQs seemed to be strangely lacking in this information. Inexplicably, I decided to take on the task of finding it out myself. Once I had an armor table, I decided to add Def and MDef, since few guides had the latter data (you have to look at the Stat menu before and after, it doesn't tell you outright). While doing that, I noticed no one had done a real investigation on Stats, so I thought I might as well do that too. Then I discovered, much to my surprise, how the Action Grid modifies stats. And so on I moved from one aspect to another, and one small table has grown to the document you now see before you. Naturally, I imagine other people are interested with what I've found, so I've finally packaged it all up in a FAQ. Enjoy! Contact Information: My current email is sorceror25@comcast.net. You also can find me on the Secret of Mana board and elsewhere as "Axen". Release History: v1.0 - July 17, 2004 Done! While I may add sections in the future, the sections that are here now are complete. -More formatting. Hunted down last of the tabs -Petrify status protection removed from Faerie's Ring; added to Cockatrice Cap. (Thanks to ReggieTheReckless for the head's up) v0.9 - July 7, 2004 Reformatted to 79 characters wide. Spellchecked. More orbs added. Initial submission. v0.8 - Beta Pre-Release - July 6, 2004 Prior to submission to GameFAQs. Wordy section added. ASCII title completed. Most info is here, mainly its weapon orb stuff left. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ____________________| / II. However, either due to a script error of some sort or a decision on the part of the designers, it is not acquirable without hacking the game (see ManaEdit in Section VII). If you do hack an Armet into your inventory, it functions normally (e.g. bug-free). † Equipping something which prevents poison on a character already poisoned cures them. So it might be a good idea to hang onto a Cobra Bracelet or two! ‡ Although the game calls them the same thing, unconsciousness caused by an attack (such as the bubbles of a Steamed Crab) and that caused by Sleep Flower seem to be distinct statuses, in as much as protection is concerned. Where to find the unbuyable stuff: Item dropped by drop rate Where? -------------- ---------- --------- ------------- Vampmire Cape Fiend Head common Mana Fortress Power Suit Weeper common Mana Fortress Faerie Cloak Master Ninja common Mana Fortress, 3rd floor Cockatrice Cap Basilisk rare Underground City, MF* Amulet Helm National Scar rare Grand Palace, Mana Fortress Griffin Helm Griffin Claw rare Pure Land Faerie Crown Terminator common Mana Fortress, 3rd floor Guardian Ring Doom Sword rare Grand Palace, Mana Fortress Ninja Gloves Dark Stalker rare Tascnia, Underground City, MF** Dragon Ring Ice Thug rare Pure Land Watcher Ring Eggplant Man rare various, Pure Land Imp's Ring Ghost rare Pure Land Amulet Ring Tsunami common Mana Fortress Faerie Ring Wolf Lord common Mana Fortress IMPORTANT: Most monsters in the Pure Land appear ONLY in the Pure Land, and after you complete it, you CANNOT RE-ENTER IT. The only exception to this are Eggplant Men, one of which can be found at the end of the subway car in the Underground City, and are spawned from Shapeshifters (Eggplant Men may then themselves spawn Needlions). So if you want, say, a Griffin Helm, DON'T FINISH PURE LAND UNTIL YOU HAVE IT! * There is only a single Basilisk in the MF, on the second floor. If you didn't get a Griffin Helm (see above note), this guy is your only other source for improved headgear for the Boy. ** Dark Stalkers appear in Tascnia as a boss, in the Undeground City as an ordinary enemy, and are spawned by Fiend Heads in the MF. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ____________________| / IV. Statistics |xxxxxxxxx) `""""""""""""""""""""| ------------------------------- Base Stats: These are determined at the start of the game for the Boy, and for the Girl and Sprite when they join. They increase as you level up, but not necessarily every level. Strength (Str) - Self-explanatory. Base stat for damage with a weapon. Agility (Agi) - This stat covers both inherent speed of a character, manual dexterity, and hand/eye coordination. Agility is divided by 4, and then becomes the base stat for Hit rate and Evade rate. Since the game rounds down, an Agility change of 22 to 23 is insignificant, while a change of 23 to 24 is. Constitution (Con) - How tough a character is, in a general sense. It serves as the base stat for your Defense rating. The game probably also uses the Con stat directly when determining whether or not you die from a Doom Trap. Intelligence (Int) - This stat describes a character's knowledge, especially knowledge of the arcane. The higher his Int stat, the more damage and/or greater effect the Sprite's spells have. Wisdom (Wis) - Wisdom is closely related to Intelligence, yet they are distinct concepts. Wisdom involves more common sense and "street smarts". The higher her Wisdom stat, the more HP the Girl can heal, and the greater the effect of her defensive spells. Wisdom is also important for all characters, as it is used as the base for Magical Defense. Derived Stats: These stats are derived (hence the name) from your base stats and your current equipment. The game loads these numbers up at their appropriate times when computing damage dealt or received. - Attack = Str + attack power of weapon equipped (see above table) The higher this is, the more damage you deal with an attack. - Hit% = 75 + Agi/4 (rounded down) The higher this is, the less likely you are to miss. - Defense = Con + physical defense of all armor equipped (see above table) The higher this is, the less damage you take from attacks. - Evade% = Agi/4 + 37 if wearing armor + 23 if wearing a helmet + 15 if wearing a ring/bracelet. The higher this is, the more likely the enemy is to miss. - Magic Def = Wis + magical defense of all armor equipped (see above table) The higher this is, the less damage you take from spells. Spells like Speed Up, Speed Down, Defender and the like do not change your stats directly at the level of the stat screen. Apparently, they come into play at some other point. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ____________________| / V. Action Grid |xxxxxxxxx) `""""""""""""""""""""| ------------------------------- In addition to modifying the AI's behavior, the action grid alters a computer- controlled character's stats. These stat bonuses do not apply to characters controlled by the player(s). Switching control between characters consequently causes them to be applied and unapplied as needed.
