FMW Wrestling - Super Famicom, Complete Guide v 1.0 1993 Pony Canyon Inc. This guide is current as of 8-6-2002 by: Rjtiger (1) Introduction I started writing this guide more than two years ago and just found it floating around my computer recently. I decided to finish it up. This is an faq for FMW wrestling on the SFC/SNES. I encountered this game after reading a review that was less than flattering. The reviewer complained about the gameplay difficulty and the facts that he could not beat the first stage in 1 player mode or play in different stages in 2 player mode. Despite the lack of complements i decided to give the game a chance. Suffice it to say i was pleasantly surprised by how much fun i had. Not only did i pick up the gameplay easily i was able to complete the entire game several times through without losing as well as unlocking a secret one match mode where you can play as Megumi Kudo. I decided to write an FAQ for it so others might give it a chance. I've amassed quite a lot of info and strategy for the game. The game is an oddity. It doesn't play like any other wrestling game I've ever seen. It doesn't seem like it was a high priority project for pony canyon as obviously not much work was put into it. It seems like an attempt at a street fighter clone with a wrestling theme. If you're looking for a good wrestling game or even a good street fighter clone your in the wrong place. If you are a collector of import wrestling games, a fan of the old FMW, a garbage wrestling fan, or just curious this is a fun game. The game has potential and could have been what world heroes and world heroes 2's death match mode is, good game play and an interesting take on garbage wrestling. Instead its a slapped together game with not much appeal outside that of its curious existence. But that doesn't mean you won't have some fun playing it. There are 2 immediately selectable modes and one secret mode unlocked when you beat the single player game. The first option is single player mode. In this mode you pick from the four selectable characters and take on six of Shadow Master's minions in a series of death matches before taking on the Shadow Master himself in the final battle. Shadow Master is the armored creature that greets you when you turn on the game. He has seemingly taken over the wrestling world in some evil plan for world domination, at least that's my best guess. The matches are interesting interpretations of the death matches that used to take place in FMW's pre-sport's entertainment pre-Fuyuki days. The second option is two player mode. Here you pick from the same four characters and take each other on in your choice of the death matches from the single player game. I can't help but ask myself why your opponents from the single player game aren't available in two player mode, they're already in the game it wouldn't have taken any extra work. Once you beat the single player mode you unlock a special third option that is basically a historic match mode where you play as Megumi Kudo against Combat Toyota in a death match. Its a nice little bonus for your work. The matches are fought in typical fighting game style, best of three with knock outs when one player's health meter is completely diminished. Under each player's health meter are three boxes that start off filled and diminish when you perform grapple moves. After you use the boxes they will refill with time. In the following pages you will find a guide to the game so you don't decide you hate because you can't figure out how to play. I hope this helps people enjoy the game a little bit more. (2) Key D_pad - movement /\ = up \/ = down > = forward < = back START button - pause B,A,Y,X-action buttons (3) Moves First let me explain the power box meter. You start off each with three boxes with Japanese writing on them. These boxes dictate which of your grapple moves you can do. Your weak grapple requires at least one box, medium two boxes and strong grapple three boxes. After you use your boxes they will refill at the rate of a quarter box every few seconds. Standing Attacks B - kick A - punch X - run Blocking < - block Grappling > - grapple (press forward to grapple then press a direction followed by one of the action button or a direction and action button simultaneously) /\+action button = weak move (must have at least one power box in your meter) >+action button = medium move (must have at least two power boxes in your meter) \/+action button = strong move (must have all three power boxes in your meter) Running Attacks X+<,> - run You can perform your punch and kick move while running and some of the wrestlers can perform a special running attack by pressing the Y button right before they reach their opponent. Y = running attack Jumping Attack Onita and Fuji can jump straight up or forward and perform air attacks but Asako and Goto can only perform jumping attacks by pressing up and kick simultaneously. Onita & Fuji /\ - jump action button = flying attack /\+> - forward jump action button = flying attack Goto & Asaka /\+B = flying attack (3) The Death Matches Their are seven death matches that are fought in sequence in single player mode and can be selected in two player mode on the pre match screen after both players have selected their characters by pressing up or down. Here are the death matches in the order in which you play them in single player mode and the order in which they are listed in two player mode: 1. Sumo Ring Explosives Volcano Eruption Death Match - This match takes place in a sumo ring with the hazard being that when someone gets pushed out of the boundaries of the ring they encounter land mines that blow them to hell. In one player mode, after you've defeated your opponent the volcano in the back erupts and you get hit by debris, without being damaged! 2. Plane Hangar Blow Torch Meteor Shower Death Match - This match takes place in a Airforce hangar. The hazards are when you get too close to the side you get torched by an array of blowtorches. In addition, every so often flaming meteors will start falling out of the sky. 3. No Ropes Exploding Steel Cage Death Match - A more realistic death match, the walls of the cage are laced with explosive that go off when you get too close. In one player mode when you win the explosive all go off, not really doing anything to your character though. 4. Rooftop Match - this match is stupid. You're on a roof. In one player mode, the opponent in this stage will spit a purple haze over you that will cause you to start hallucinating. This also happens in two player mode after a certain amount of time. 5. Electrified Ropes Death Match - The ring ropes are electrified. You get too close you get zapped. I've never seen a match like this in real life yet I've seen it in at least five games. 6. Barbwire Death Match - This is just what it sounds like. A ring surrounded by barbed wire instead of ring ropes which you will get tangled up and sliced up in if you get pushed into them. The location for this one is a medieval dungeon. 7. Thunder Cage Death Match - This match takes place outside of Shadow Master's fortress. If you get too close to the cage walls, you get hit with a bolt of lightning! Maybe Shadow Master is getting a little help from Kane. (4) Move Lists Atsushi Onita weak grapple - back drop medium grapple - ddo strong grapple - thunderfire powerbomb flying attack(/\) - flying thrust kick flying attack (/\+>) - flying thrust kick special running attack - running head butt Tarzan Goto weak grapple - double headbutt medium grapple - verticle suplex strong grapple - piledriving face smash flying attack(/\+B) - jumping kick Sambo Asako weak grapple - crescent kick medium grapple - back drop strong grapple - flying crescent kick flying attack(/\+B) - jumping kick special running attack - running elbow butt Ricky Fuji weak grapple - spinning back kick medium grapple - piledriver strong grapple - forward rolling fireman's carry slam flying attack(/\) - dropkick flying attack(/\+>) - flying roundhouse kick Megumi Kudo (hidden) weak grapple - back drop medium grapple - back drop strong grapple - back drop special running attack - running bump attack (5) SIngle Player Mode Character Select | Atsushi Onita Tarzan Goto | | Sambo Asako Ricky Fuji 1st Match Match Type: Sumo Ring Explosives Volcano Eruption Death Match Opponent: Yashajin, Basically a generic sumo wrestler character. 2nd Match Match Type : Plane Hangar Blow Torch Meteor Shower Death Match Opponent: Killer, A cyborg in a martial arts Gi. 3rd Match Match type: No Ropes Exploding Steel Cage Death Match Opponent: Knuckles, An obvious Mike Tyson Clone with the advantage of boxing gloves that create small explosions as they make contact with your face. 4th Match Match Type: Rooftop Match Opponent: Dude Love, I'm not sure if the name is just a coincidence or if someone at FMW was familiar with Mick Foley's past. This hippie bad guy will occasionally spit a purple mist that will cause everything to look wacky and colorful and causes him to turn into a boxing mushroom. A boxing mushroom. 5th Match Match Type: Electrified Ropes Death Match Opponent: Inoba, Antonio Inoki could not have been ripped off more obviously. I guess Onita had bitterness towards Inoki for his regard of FMW as crap. 6th Match Match Type: Barbwire Death Match Opponent: Bondage, a leather clad S & M freak, weird. 7th Match (In this final battle once you win one round the fortress in the back and the cage explode and your opponent morphs into a mirror image of you and the match type changes) (1st round) Match Type: Thunder Cage Death Match Opponent: King Shadow, The big armor clad evil boss. (7) Secret Single Player Women's Mode Character:Megumi Kudo Match Type: Electrified Ropes Death Match Opponent: Combat Toyoda (7) General Strategy The most important thing to master in this game is using your surroundings to your advantage. Always make sure your opponents back is to the death match hazards on the sides so that you have them cornered and its not the other way around. You cannot get cornered or you're screwed cause the computer will bash you into the hazards without letting you stand. Something you'll notice is that opponents will often follow you into hazards. Use this to bait them. Also, if you are in a bind and have more energy than your opponent you can sometimes win by going into the hazard and taking the damage in the hopes that they will follow you in and end up worse of than you. Suicidal but useful. Your best approach is to try to get them to hit the hazards without hitting them yourselves. For this strikes and flying attacks are best because some of the grapples end with both of you moving forward. Moves like Onita's thunderfire power bomb also work well near the hazards because you'll get the damage from a strong grapple move and the damage from the hazards. Saving up power boxes for strong grapple moves is a good idea because they do a substantial amount of damage and give you time to back off from your opponent so you aren't caught by surprise. Running is useful both for hitting opponents into the hazards and for escaping your opponent if they have you cornered. You can run past your opponent which is very useful. A good over all strategy is to corner your opponent, use strikes, jump or run out, jump in with a flying attack or running attack, strike and use a strong or medium grapple then jump or run back and repeat the process. If you get good at that you can start modifying the pattern and you'll be able to defeat opponents pretty easily using any of the characters. You can also try keeping them cornered and using strikes as they're getting up and then grapples when you have enough boxes in a cycle. Watch out when blocking because if your opponent stops attacking while you are blocking you will walk backwards. This can be a big mistake if you are close enough to the hazards. When fighting an opponent who runs or rushes out you with running attacks or combos treat him like a bull, get out of his way and then pounce. Be careful when you grapple because your opponent has equal opportunity to hit you with a move. This is where your button mashing skills come in handy. It's often easier to use weaker grapples and build up to stronger attacks because weaker grapples are easier to pull off. Combine all these strategies with the specific strategies for each opponent and you should master this game in no time. (8) Opponent Strategy Yashajin - Likes to use running attacks. Just get out of his way like a bullfighter and when he stops running pounce and try to get him into the explosives using strikes or grapples. Killer - His kicks have long range so watch out. Watch out for the blow torches on the sides when trying to get your opponent into them because they can reach you through your opponent so back off when the torches are frying Killer. Watch out when the meteor showers start. A good idea is to try to get on the opposite side of the shower than your opponent. This will cause killer to keep trying to cross the shower to try and attack you. As he tries this the meteors will hit him. The torches are sort of slow so another strategy is to stand near them to bait Killer then jump or run out of the way. Knuckles - Watch his punch rushes because if he lands the first he can usually land a few more. Try to jump over him or run past him and then get him towards the exploding cage walls. Dude Love - He likes to run and strike and use jumping kicks. Blocking is useful here. Save your boxes and use your strong grapples. When he hits you with the haze you can't block his attacks or grapple him. Your best bet is to back off as much as you can and use a jump attack when he comes in straight or a punch when he come sin jumping. Inoba - Avoid grapples if you can especially when near the electrified ropes because he will suplex you into the ropes and keep you there. He also has an abdominal stretch grapple move that can suck the life out of you. Use strikes as much as you can and try to back him into the ropes. His inseguiri has incredible range so attacking from above or using long range kicks are a better bet than close quarters combat. Bondage - His strikes have good range and push you back a ways so watch out when near the barbwire. Using the old bull fighter technique works here. Baiting Bondage also works, get near the barbwire but not too near, then get out of the way when he jumps or runs at you. Using long range standing strike work well against Bondage especially when your near the wire. Shadow Master - Almost unstoppable. He will run at you like nuts and try to push you into the cage. Avoid him when he tries this. Its hard to win a grapple with him so don't try going for big moves because you won't be able to pull them off. Use weaker grapples and build up to stronger attacks. His somersault attack has quite the range, damage, and throws you back a ways. The lightning bolts on the sides also have a good range so they create a bad combination with the Master. Bait him by getting close to the lightning but not to close then running past him as he pounces. Use flying attacks followed by standing strikes then pull out and bait him again. Use the lightning to your advantage! Shadow - This depends on who you are playing as. Basically the computer will use a lot of the same strategies you have so you should be able to tell what they're going to do next. Don't grapple too much early on, use strikes and flying attacks then weak grapples until you have diminished enough of their energy. Then hit them with the strong grapple. The same old techniques you've used to get them into the hazards work well here. Combat Toyoda - In this match you can only use Megumi Kudo. Funny thing though she doesn't have power boxes and can't jump. This means that strategies that involve jumping don't work so try running instead. No power boxes means you don't have to worry about conserving boxes to do grapple moves. But that doesn't matter because she only has one grapple moves for all three. Watch out for the drop kick, it's got good range. The biggest thing you need to watch out for is a a chair that is thrown out of the audience for Toyoda. If she catches it she can destroy you in three or four shots. Use a punch or kick on her when she pauses to catch the chair and work from there. ________________________________ CREDITS & CONTACTS This guide was written by me.
