NHLPA Hockey '93 FAQ Copyright Electronic Sports 1992 Written By Brian P. Sulpher E-mail: briansulpher@hotmail.com Version: 1.7 Dates Written: November 20th to November 23rd, 2003 I dedicate this to my brothers who I played numerous games with. We really used to run the score up, eh guys? Also, for Cougar. I miss you, and I hope you are living it up in the afterlife as you did in this world. You will always be in my memories, and you will never be forgotten. Also, In memory of Howler and Koonce. You two never had a good start in your lives, but you had a good time when you spent your time at my house. It was oh so unfortunate that you both had your already tragic lives cut short, but I can only hope that I helped make your life a more enjoyable experience. You too will be missed, but not forgotten. ----------- Version 1.0 ----------- -Submitted on November 23rd, 2002 ----------- Version 1.5 ----------- -Submitted on April 15th, 2003 -Reformatted the structure -Fixed some spelling mistakes ----------- Version 1.6 ----------- -Submitted guide on March 9th, 2005 -I added in Honestgamers as a site allowed to use my FAQs -Also added in some info from Larah (concerning the control of which team when selecting a play-off format of play) -reformatted the FAQ to impove the flow and ease the reading process a tad ----------- Version 1.7 ----------- -Submitted guide on January 29th, 2006 -I added in Retronintendo as a site allowed to use my FAQs -Altered some format in a few areas ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------Table Of Contents-------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Introduction 2) Controls 3) Play Modes 4) Stats And Rules Options 5) Team Rosters And Ratings 6) Strategies 7) Final Word ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------Introduction----------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) This is EA's version of their acclaimed hockey series for the 1993 season. Although it is not as advanced as many other in the series, it is still a fun play. Take your favourite team, or maybe try to take a Dark Horse to the finals to pull off the dream that burns in every hockey fans soul. For instance, as the song says "This chance may never come again." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------Controls---------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) This section will outline the controls involved in the various functions of the game. o-----------o | Defensive | o-----------o D-Pad - The direction pressed will move you in the same direction. This is for someone who wants to get a qucik hame against the computer. This is the ONLY mode that supports two players! o--------------o | New Playoffs | o--------------o This mode will allow you to enter the playoffs in the preliminary round with 15 other teams, all vying for Lord Stanley's Cup. You can not directly choose your team, but you can toggle the match-ups till you find one that you want to participate in. If you get the wrong team, just reset and try again. o-----------o | Best Of 7 | o-----------o This one works the same as the NEW PLAYOFFS, but with one minor exception... the Playoffs are no longer single elimination! You now have to win four games in a series against another team before they can do the same against you. o-------------------o | Continue Playoffs | o-------------------o This mode allows you to enter a password recieved during your playoff progress. Be sure to write the passwords down carefully, or you will have to use older ones! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------Stats And Rules Options--------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) This section will look at the options available to you in each play mode choice. o----------------o | Regular Season | o----------------o Players......: You can choose between Demo (watch two computer teams play), One Player - Home (the player is home team), One Player - Visitor (the player is visitor), Teammates (two players play on same team), Head To Head (two players are on opposite teams). Team 1.......: Select which team will be the home team. Team 2.......: Select which team will be the visitor team. Period Length: 5 minutes, 10 minutes, or 20 minutes are your options. Penalties....: Only Fighting (no infractions except fighting), On with No Offsides (all penalties without offsides), and ON (all infractions called). Line Changes.: You can select ON (you alternate lines as they tire), and OFF (first line plays all the time). o--------------o | New Playoffs | o--------------o Team 1 & Team 2: These are bundled, but you can control which team that you control. Watch the Team 1 box, as that is the one that the human player will control, just keep switching it around till you get the team you desire. This also works for getting home ice advantage since the CPU puts you into the visitor position the majority of the time. Period Length..: 5 minutes, 10 minutes, or 20 minutes are your options. Penalties......: Only Fighting (no infractions except fighting), On with No Offsides (all penalties without offsides), and ON (all infractions called). Line Changes...: You can select ON (you alternate lines as they tire), and OFF (first line plays all the time). o-----------o | Best Of 7 | o-----------o Team 1 & Team 2: These are bundled, but you can control which team that you control. The rosters will be listed by default line groupings (Scoring 1, Scoring 2, and Checking), and extras will not be listed, so you need to figure out who to use off the bench if injuries occur. score in this game is to use the famous move called the wrap around. Go behind the net, start out on one side of the net, cross in front of the net, and throw the puck into the far corner. This is a great way to score. b) Here is a cheap way to get easy wrap around goals. Whenever you are heading downwards toward the opponents net, come in on the right (when looking at TV) side, and go behind the net. The goalie will often get caught up on the side of the net, so dance out front, and chuck the puck into the yawning cage before the goalie recovers. c) If a player has high power on their shot (like 80 to 100), try to blast slapshots past the goalie. If the goalie saves them, the rebound will often bounce out to one of your players for a possible rebound goal, and if the shot was so hard it knocked the goalie down, it is a simple matter of hitting the open net. d) Quick passes are especially useful for clearing the puck out of your own zone. This will not give the opposition any time to adjust to your position. e) Hooking your opponent ahead of you going into your zone, you can slow them down, or maybe even pull them down before they can get anywhere near the net. f) Keep your lines fresh, and you will be able to out manuveur your opposition more often, and thus create more chances to score and have a faster defensive unit out there. g) Throw the face-off back to your defencemen. This will not only get you the puck away from your opposition, but it leaves your forwards the chance to break for the goal with your lead-in pass. h) Try to shoot from closer in. Not only does this lessen the chance of a blocked shot, but it also gives the Goalie less time to react to your blast. i) Whenever your opposition parks themselves in front of your net, take a player of yours to clear them out. This lessens their chances of a rebound goal. j) If you play without line changes, make sure to check the ratings and skills of your starters to guy who sit on the bench. You back-up guys may be better for you with their specific skills. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------Final Word--------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) As is the usual, this walkthrough is copyright property of Brian P. This game is cool, but by far the worst in the now long-running series. Try to pick up a different one from the series on SNES for the 2D hockey experience! However, you should really look at the Sega Genesis version if you want the superior version of this game. Seriously, go with it for the best play, and this comes from an old school Nintendo junkie! ;)
