There are NO random battles, except for on the world map (but those are so few and far between that it doesn't really matter). Which for some people is a Godsend and for others its the kiss of death. Those who fall into the first category are the people who absolutly despise the idea of random battling. It can become very annoying and very tedious VERY quickly. I believe BOFIII was an excellent example of this. Those who fall into the second category, are the people who dislike battling, including random battling. But, random battling keeps them in check. They can't avoid fights, so they are forced to level up and become stronger. Me? I fall somewhere in the middle. Battles are intiated when you are in a 'square' adjacent to a monster. Depending on the positioning of you and the monster, there are three different fighting scenarios that may occur. Fighting Scenario 1: Normal Battle A 'normal battle' takes place when the character and the monster run into eachother face-to-face or side-to-side. The battle occurs normally. Meaning, both parties have an equal oppurtunity to attack the other party. And formations will remain intact. Fighting Scenario B: Suprise Attack! A 'suprise attack!' takes place when the charcter is 'ambushed' by the monster, either from the side or the back. The monster party is allowed an extra turn at the beginning of the battle, and the character's party's formations are rearranged. Fighting Scenario C: Got in First! A 'got in first!' takes place when the character ambushes the monster's party, either from the side or the back. The character's party is allowed an extra turn at the beginning of the battle, and the character's party's formations are rearranged. The battle interface is very similar to that of Wild ARMs and Breath of Fire III. So if you're familiar with those, you should pick up this very quickly. First, you have to select you Party Option: Change Formation, Fight, or Escape. Change Formation: By changing your formation (the order in which your characters are), you can keep one character safer, if they are low on HP, etc., etc. This option is needed very often. Escape: In trouble? Run! Just select this option if your party gets in big trouble and you don't think you can make it through this fight alive. This option isn't available against bosses. Be warned, when you escape, the enemy will still be there. Be careful to not get in another fight! Fight: Fighting is your main option. From 'fight' five more options are selectable: attack, defend, spell, item, and IP ability. Attack: Attack is just you good ol' swing your sword at 'em attack. Nothing special here. Defend: If you're low on HP, and you can't heal yourself. Use defend. It'll cut down on the amount of damage you receive. I don't use this very often, I don't see the use in it. Spell: Spell is where you'll find all of your... uhm... spells! *_* You have attack, status, and curing magic. Be sure to keep an eye on your MP meter when using magic. Item: Item lets you use the items you have in stock. Need some HP? Need some MP? Wanna get out of this battle NOW? Its all in your Item menu. IP Ability: When you are attacked by an enemy, your IP meter goes up. You can use this IP for IP attacks. All About Shops ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Shops are a VERY key part to any RPG, and this holds true with Lufia II. In a shop you can buy items to help you on your quest: potions, swords, armor, etc. Below are a few guidlines and tips to help you in the shopping world of Lufia II. Items: Items are very important in Lufia II. You should always be sure that you have enough potions/hi-potions, depending on where you are in the game. As your levels increase in the game, so do your HP. This means that it will be harder to restore your HP, so buy more items! Every time you come into a town, make sure that you head to the items, first thing! I try to keep about 35-40 potions with me at all times, its best to be prepared. You'll also want to stock up on other items while at the Items Shop. I find Escape to be quite handy. Whenever you reach the end of a LONG dungeon and don't feel like walking out (or maybe you CAN'T walk out, alive!), just use and escape. POOF! You're back at the very begginning of the dungeon! Quite helpful, indeed. Equipment: When buying armor or weapons keep an eye on your character icon at the top of the screen, this is how you will know whether or not this piece of equipment is actually benefitial to your party. If you select an item to purchase and your character kneels down, then the item you have selected is not as good as the item you already have equiped, don't worry about buying it. If you select an item to purchase and your character is shown standing with the leters "EQ" on the icon, then you have that item already equiped, don't worry about buying it either. If you select an item to purchase and your character icon is shown standing with a blue number appearing beside a statistic, then that item is better than what you have equiped; it will raise said statistic by said number. Sometimes it is actually helpful to buy items that are equal to what you have equiped. You never know when these will come in handy... Try to stay away from purchasing equipment that is worse than what you have equiped, it won't do you much good. You want to purchase as much new and better equipment as you can on each visit to a shop. But, don't focus on just one character, spread the wealth! If you don't have the money now, try to wait until you do; it might just be worth it! Once you start getting Capsule Monsters, try not to sell your old equipment (unless you NEED the cash). You can always feed the old stuff to your Capsule Monster and let it grow. :) Other Places to Go ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The Inn: The Inn is a very, very GOOD place to go. Any time that you are low on HP and/or MP, stay at the Inn; you'll be fully restored. And luckily, the Inn is rather cheap in every town. You can also learn good info in the Inn. People standing around inside always like to tell you all about whats going on in the world. You'll often get good tips and/or hints inside. The Church: After you've completed your stay at the Inn, head over to the Church. You can save your game, remove status effects, and even raise the dead! Holy Hell! Walkthrough ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Here it is... the moment we've all been waiting for: the incomplete walkthrough for Lufia II! Read on my friend! Welcome to the Dungeon ---------------------- Elcid: When you first gain control of Maxim, you can talk to Tia and even buy some items if you want to, you don't really need anything though. So move on! Leave the house, you are now in the streets of Elcid. Walk around and talk to the locals, they seem to be giving you some grief about Tia, bah!... I'm a warrior! :) Talk to the old guy across the bridge: "I'll show you my special dungeon technique sometime." Now, try to leave the town... "Oh Maxim, Its you!" :) The old guy wants you to meet him at the dungeon to the south. Head north, check out the rest of the town: the people, the spell shop, etc. Talk to the woman in the Spell Shop to learn about using spells, neat-o. Head to the chuch, talk to the man in the pew to learn some more great info. Go talk to the preacher and save your game. Now your ready to leave town. On the world map, head south to the sewer/man-hole looking thing. Secret Skills Cave: Once inside, talk to the old guy (what is your name dammit?!). You'll fight the jelly and kick his butt. You learn all about moving and attacking. After the fight, head to the next room. In this room, you learn about skills, go go Skill Arrow! Head to the next room. Do as the old guy says and hit the switch. Move along! After the hallway, you have yet another lesson to learn. Oh no, the button! The button! Just push the pillar onto the button and try to convince yourself that the developers didn't play any Zelda... good luck! Before you leave the room, you get the Reset spell. Woo-hoo! Reset! Aw-right! :) Go to the next room and jump down the ledge. NEXT! Defeat all enemies to unlock the door... COUGHZELDA-RIPOFFCOUGH... :) You'll level up after your second fight, yay! In the next room, find the switch by swinging your sword at the bushes, I don't even need to say it... Its rather obvious where to find it. After that you get to play with pots. Grab the first pot and using the R button rotate to set it on the right slate. Go through the opening, and grab the second pot. Go back up and set it on the left slate. This concludes our lesson boys and girls. You can now leave the dungeon the same way you entered, fight the Red Jellies if you want. On the world map, head back to Elcid. The Cave to Sundletan --------------------- Elcid: Back in Elcid, you need to head back to Tia's. After dinner and discussion, Maxim heads out. Before you can cross the bridge, you learn of monsters taking over the North Cave, and only YOU can stop them. You know the drill, leave town. On the world map, head north across the bridge. Cave to Sundletan: Inside the cave, talk to the guy about a woman entering the cave alone. Head through the door to the north. Go right and chop the bush, hit the switch and go south. Take out the bushes, kill the 'shroom, and go through the door. Near the first path, there is a bush. Take it out and put the pot on the switch, go through the door. The next room is very easy, its just a question of 'who do you want to fight more?'. Just push a block, fight a monster, and go down the stairs. Quite easy! In the next room, head down to grab a Power Potion. Move to the right of the area and hit the red switch; ta-da! Its blue! The bridge is now restored. Head back towards the stairs and jump down where the arrows are. Head down the stairs. Save, heal, do what ya gotta do. go up the next stairs. Look out! GOOBER! Boss: Lizard Man (~100HP / 100EXP / 100G) Very simple strategy: attack, attack, potion; attack, attack, potion; continue until dead. :) After a brief conversation with the ever-too mysterious Iris, you are on your own again. On your way out, go to the room to the north and grab a Life Potion and an Escape. Leave the room and go to the very beggining of the dungeon head north and use the door key to unlock the door. Welcome to the other side! On the world map, head to the northeast to reach the quaint village of Sundletan. Earthquake! ----------- Sundletan: After the earthquake, head to the church to save your game. Go to the Spell Shop and look at what they got, I recommend Strong. Next, head to the Equipment Shop, buy what you can. When you're ready, leave town. On the world map, do a little fighting and try to get to level 6 or 7 before entering the dungeon. Head to the dungeon when you're ready to go. Lake Cave: Once inside the Lake Cave, hit the switch with your arrow, and use the pieces of wood to make a bridge across the water. Follow the path to the next room. Take the door to the left, and fall down the hole. The left door is a save point. First, go down. You'll find a Power Potion. Leave the room. Take the door to the right. Move the two pillars beside eachother. Leave throught the right door. Head down the room and to the door at the bottom, you can go in and fight if you want. But, be warned! You will need to have enough Potions (6-7) to make it through. If you do defeat all of the enemies, you get a Speedy Ring, which is quite helpful. Head to the right side of the room, and to the very top. Go left into the wall and you will recieve a Miracle. Leave the room. Go down, and move the bottom-right block to discover a staircase. In the next room, you have to reverse the arrow. Move the bottom block to the top and the side blocks to the middle. Voila! Go up to find the Lake Key. Keep backtracking until you reach the room with the blue rug. From here, head north. After you kill all three enemies, shoot them in the same order as you killed them. Head through the opened door, and grab the Insect Crush. Head back to the blue rug room. Go left and stand on the lower-left crack, you'll land on the slate below. Enter the now-opened door to the right. Make a bridge to the 'island' using three of the bridge pieces. Take the other piece across and drop it into the water to the right of the switch. Hit the switch and go down the ladder. Pick up the left over piece and use it to cross to the other ladder. Exit through the door to the top. Boss: Big Catfish (?HP / 500EXP / 500G) Another simple boss fight. Just keep using your Bomb Attack IP ability from the Insect Crush. If you get low on HP use the Strong spell to recover. Once the Big Catfish goes back to sleep. Backtrack your way out of the dungeon, and head back to Sundletan. Tia in Trouble -------------- Sundletan: Once you're back in town, head to the Inn and rest. Then, go save at the Church. You'll learn of a woman coming to look for you. She has gone to Lake Cave, oh my! Lake Cave: Go to the blue rug room, head up. Defeat the Goblin and the Skeleton (easy!), and Tia will join your party. Leave the cave and head back to Sundletan. Sundletan: Go to the Inn and rest up. Buy Tia a Whip, you also may want to buy a few spells, I recommend Poison. Now, save your game at the church. When you're ready to go, leave town and head to the northwest. "Wily" Water ------------ Shrine to Alunze Kingdom: When you reach the shrine, just walk through it to reach Alunze Kingdom. Once you're on the other side of the Shrine, head south around the mountains. Enter the big tree and head up. Foomy Woods: Talk to the woman and you will gain your first Capsule Monster, a Foomy! Now, leave the woods and head north. Alunze Kingdom: Explore the town and buy new items and equipment. Now that you have a capsule monster, feed your old equipment to it instead of selling it. Stay at the Inn and save your game at the church. Leave the town for the castle when you are ready. Alunze Castle (basement): Make your way up the stairs and into the Throne Room. Uh-oh, Barty and Bert have stolen the crown, eek! :) Leave the crown room and head past the stairs, onto the balcony. Go right and down the stairs, go down the next flight of stairs as well. You'll find a dying soldier in you path. Talk to him and head down the stairs. Talk to the guard and go through the door. Head down and place the pot on the button. In the next room, push the left block down and push the right block on the switch; then push the lower block down the opened hallway, and left onto the switch. Head down and you will find the Bomb. Leave the area the way you came in. When you reach the room with the four pillars, go to the right and blow up the cracked wall. Go down and grab the pot. Go back up, left, then down and place the pot on the switch. Head past the bridge and grab the headband. Now, go back to the bridge, and cross it, and go down the stairs. Head through the next two rooms killing the enemies. You'll find a save/restore point. Backtrack back to the room with the stairs. On the upper wall, you can blow a hole through. On the other side, place the pot on the upper switch to get an escape, come back and put the pot on the lower switch. Go through the opened door. When you reach the room with the colored squares, yell your favorite obscenity as loud as you can... there, that should save you some time. Go through the door to the left to get a coat, go back and down. In the next room, defeat the enemies and move the blocks. Move the left one down, the right one right, and then just push the other one through. Go down the stairs. First thing, walk down the narrow hallway to the far-left, and push the block to the left. Go back and place the pot on the lower-right switch and step onto the teleporter. Kill the enemy; the spikes will drop and you can get the Light Knife from the treasure chest, leave the room via the teleporter. Place the pot on the upper-right switch, and step on the teleporter. In this room go left 2, up 2, left 2, up 2, right 2, up 2, right 1, and you'll get a Secret Fruit. Now, head back up, and use the upper-left switch. Place a bomb next to the crate and get out of the blocked-off area. Let the bomb explode and cross the water to get the chest: "You've got Dragon Egg!". Head out the door and push the other block down. Head back up. Go to the lower-left switch; kill the Cobalts and go through the door. Go down the stairs and through the door. You'll find Berty and Bart with the crown. EK! WAAAATTTEEEERRRR!!! Oh well... After they get swept away, go up the stairs and to the left. Go down, you'll find the crown laying in the waterway. Use an Escape and you're home-free. Alunze Castle: When you get back to the Throne Room, tell the King that you want 'nothing' as a reward, you will get 3000G. :) You can leave the castle now. Alunze Kingdom: Head back to town to rest, save, and stock up on items. When you are done, head to the small shrine to the North. The Shrine is Locked -------------------- Alunze North Shrine: You arrive to find that a guy named Abel has gone to the nearby cave with the key to the shrine. Looks like you better go after him. On the world map, head to the cave to the west. Alunze Northwest Cave: After talking with Abel, go take the pick up a bridge piece and fill in the hole. Go back, grab the other piece and cross the bridge. Take the piece to the other bridge, and place it in the hole. Jump down, and hit the switch. Get the Hi-Potion from the chest. Go back to the first ladder, climb up and cross the bridge. Walk right and go through the door. Put the three pots on the switches, one pot is hidden behind the right pillar. Go through the door. When you reach the 'dead end' drop through the crack on the right side of the room. Push the first block out of the way, go up, push the second block up, go around the second block and push the second block on the switch. Go through the door. In the next room, grab the Horse Rock and equip it to Tia. Go left, push the block out of the way, and go down. Pick up the pot and place it on the secret switch. To get the secret switch, move to the bottom right corner of the cliff and start walking left, you'll see the steps appear. Leave the room. Head up and left. Head through the door. In the hallway, you can walk straight down between the two doors. You'll find Light Armor in the chest. Go back up the stairs and continue through the hallway. Follow the path down, and use the HP/MP restores. On the upper wall, there is a group of vines. Cut those away to reveal a secret passage. You'll recieve a Brave and a Miracle; go back down and go through the door to the right. Go down the stairs. In the next room, go to the upper-right. Move the block onto the switch. The bushes will keep re- growing, so use your bombs. Move to the upper-left. Stand about 6 spaces to the right of the switch and shoot it with your arrows. You're now on the lower level. Head right and you'll end up with a Jet Helm. Head back to the left, and push the two pillars into the water to form a bridge. Grab the Hi-Potion, the Power Brace and the from the three chests. To re-lower the spikes, you have to kill all of the enemies. Head back across the pillar bridge and go down the stairs. Go in the door to the right. Go under the bridge and walk through the wall. Follow the passage to get a Miracle. Go back and cross the bridge and go into the next room. Hit the switch to to lower the water. Leave the area, and go down the stairs. In the next room, go up the stairs. Go up the ladder, cross the bridge and enter the door. Hit the switch to lower the water. Leave the area and go into the door above the steps. Go down the stairs. Cross the bridge, restore you HP/MP, and save. Go into the next room and fight the boss. Boss Fight: Regal Goblin (and friends) This is the first 'difficult' boss battle of the game. The Regal Goblin isn't all that strong himself, but he'll summon Goblins and Goblin Mages to help him. Just use IP Attacks, such as Light Attack and Ice Attack, to hurt him. It may take a couple of times to get him down. Use an escape to leave the dungeon, and head back to the shrine. Tanbel ------ Alunze North Shrine: Walk in, talk, leave. On the world map head northwest for the town of Tanbel. Tanbel: After talking to Guy and Hilda, do the usual town stuff: shop, rest, save.
