Jungle Strike Walkthrough By Mike Jenista michael.jenista@math.duke.edu Version 1.00 July 2006 Table of Contents ----------------- I. Introduction II. Controls and Maneuvers III. Items IV. Copilots V. Vehicles VI. Enemies VII. General Tactics VIII. Walkthrough IX. Legal Mumbo-Jumbo I. Introduction --------------- Jungle Strike is the sequel to Desert Strike. DS was like a miniature Gulf War while Jungle Strike is a full-blown Schwarzennegar shoot-em up. You have more ammo, more armor, more vehicles of war, more levels, more EVERYTHING! The story picks up after the death of General Mubaba in DS. His son, the evil Ibn Kilbaba, has made an alliance with a Central American drug lord to attack the United States on multiple fronts. With the help of some international mercenaries and captive scientists, the two evil-doers hope to bring America to her knees. Who will defend Lady Liberty from these madmen??? You will. In your trusty Comanche helicopter. With lots of missiles. As a final introductory note, this game came out after the 1992 election of Bill Clinton, so he is featured in the game rather than Bush 41, who appears in Desert Strike. The game developers wrote the game with a certain patriotic cowboy flair, and they take a small jab at Clinton early in the game. II. Controls and Maneuvers -------------------------- Select: brings up cockpit screen with strategy maps and mission info (use Left and Right to scroll through map markings, or use Y,X,A to switch info screens) Start: pause the game X: Guns (weakest weapon-less than 10 damage, most ammo) Y: Hydra Rockets (medium weapon-25 damage, medium ammo) A: Missiles (strongest weapon-100 damage, least ammo) B: nothing (these are the default weapon settings; you can set them to something else if you prefer; just go into options and scroll through the combinations) (also, when you get into a different vehicle, the button you chose for missiles will fire whatever is the strongest weapon on your new ride, but Hydras and guns will remain the same) D-Pad: move helicopter; two different styles available With Momentum - This is the "realism" setting where the chopper drifts a little when you stop. Left and Right turn your chopper left and right while Up moves forward and Down moves backward. No Momentum - This is the same as the first style of control but the momentum effect is decreased. You only see momentum when you are moving and turning at the same time. If you stop pressing the D-Pad, you will stop moving. R - "hover mode" Now when you press Left or Right on the D-Pad, your chopper will bank in that direction (relative to your helicopter!). This is a useful tactic for fighting certain enemies. Here are three helpful maneuvers: Spinning: If you pick a point right next to an enemy and fly right at it, you can spin around him by turning toward him as you pass. With a good copilot, you can maintain a lock on the enemy the entire time and destroy him while he tries to turn at you. This requires a lot of practice, and works best with guns, not Hydras or missiles. You should not use this maneuver against a heavily armored enemy. Overhead Attack: This is the hardest maneuver to pull off, but it will help you to defeat the hardest enemies if you can master it. Fly at the enemy like you are starting a Spin maneuver, and fire a missile as you come in. As you get really close, turn earlier than a Spin maneuver so that you pass directly over the enemy. Stop pressing the Up button, but keep turning. What will happen (once you master this maneuver) is that your momentum will carry you just far enough to have space to fire, AND you will end up pointed at the enemy. Fire off a missile (it's REALLY hard to miss), and immediately move forward over the enemy AGAIN, turning as you do. Now repeat the whole cycle. Your adversary will keep turning to fire at you, but with practice you will avoid his aim. This maneuver is difficult to master, but you only need to get in three or four shots on even the toughest enemies. You should have at least five missiles before you attempt an Overhead Attack, but if you get REALLY good you can keep it up for a long time with Hydras. Keep in mind that you will probably take at least some damage from the enemy, especially on the initial approach. Southern Strafing: If you hover, it is sometimes hard to keep the controls straight in your head as you try to dodge enemy fire. The exception is if you are to the south of your enemy. Then your D-Pad controls match up with the direction your chopper moves, and hovering will feel very natural. As such, you can approach your target from the south, start hovering, and strafe left and right to dodge missiles or bullets with ease. If your adversary has a slow rate of fire, you can jink left and right to dodge so easily that it will almost seem cruel to your foe. In any case, this works best against stationary enemies and helicopters (which never move for some reason). III. Items and Buildings ------------------------ Items are spread all over the map for you to pick up. In order to pick up items you need to fly right over it and stay still until the winch lowers and grabs it; once you have the item you can start flying, even if it isn't all the way up yet. Ammo Crate (green box filled with red stuff): this refills all your weapons to maximum - 1000 guns, 60 Hydra Rockets, 9 missiles Fuel (three oil drums): refuels you to 100 fuel Armor (flat green box): restores your armor to 1000 Quickwinch (metal coil): speeds up your winch rate (not available on some missions) 1-Up (box with red X on top): extra life MIA, POW, hostages, etc (people that don't shoot at you; if they're not dressed in green, they're probably friendly): In each level you will have to pick people up. This works the same way as items; just fly over them and they will jump on the ladder that lowers. You can hold a maximum of six people on board. You need to drop them off at a landing zone (check map for landing zone markers) before you can pick up more people. As a bonus, every person you drop off at a landing zone restores 100 armor! Sometimes you need to pick up people who don't want to go for a ride in your awesome chopper... i.e., bad guys. They will not stand still and wait for you to pick them up, they will run. Just get over them and your copilot will go down on the ladder and nab 'em. You also get armor refills for bringing captured bad guys to landing zones. Now, when you check your map, you'll notice that Armor items are not marked on your map, AND sometimes it looks like there are only a couple Fuel and Ammo items available. Not so! In fact, all nine maps are littered with items, but there are unmarked items sitting in buildings and hidden in enemy vehicles. In order to look in a building, just shoot it open. It may contain items or an enemy soldier (or civilians, if you are in Washington DC). Generally, you should shoot open every small building you see, such as houses or sheds. They are usually grouped, and several of them will have good stuff inside. IV. Copilots ------------ The copilots available at the beginning are Ego and Mr. 3D. 3D sucks; choose Ego. The others are all Missing In Action, and you must rescue them over the course of the game. Once you have rescued a copilot, they are the best one available, so don't switch until you rescue the next copilot. V. Vehicles ----------- Aside from your Comanche, you will get to pilot three other vehicles (only in one mission each). XL-9 Hovercraft: This vehicle will be your main weapon in Mission 2. It has the same style of control as the Comanche, but you are now at ground level, so you can't fly over anything. You have to be very careful about buildings, enemies, trees, even ITEMS will bounce you around if you approach too fast (slowly run over them to pick them up). The only thing you don't have to be careful about is soldiers; you can just run them right over. Very fun. The hovercraft has sea mines instead of missiles. They do enough damage to destroy any enemy, but they are tough to place. In fact, they are so hard to place that I don't use them. I end up getting shot to death before I can correctly place one. Really, the hovercraft is a terrible vehicle. Assault Motorbike: The motorbike has almost no momentum whatsoever, and it is weak and puny EXCEPT for its powerful land mines. Lots of enemies will run over land mines if you lay them anywhere NEAR their path, so your strategy should be to run in front of the enemy and lay a mine. As you zip away, you will hear BOOM. Go back to see the remains! F-117X Stealth Plane: This is a great vehicle. It always moves forward, so you must be careful about piloting near buildings. If you touch a building AT ALL, you will explode. What do you get for such perilous controls??? UNLIMITED AMMO AND FUEL! You have 1200 armor, and a complement of guns, Hydras, and powerful missiles (kill most things in one hit). You should never stop firing when using this craft. Since you always move forward, the Up and Down buttons will now change your altitude. You should always stay at the highest altitude because it will increase your range AND allow you to fly over enemies, bridges, and low buildings. In fact, the only thing you can crash into when at maximum altitude are large stone structures, fuel tanks, and the plane's own hangar. This craft is probably the reason you can't choose the "from above" style of control from Desert Strike; it would make piloting this craft too easy, and you shouldn't have to switch controls in mid-game. Ergo, they eliminated that style of controls. VI. Enemies and Target Buildings -------------------------------- Rifleman: these poor fools shoot bullets at you and are totally harmless. Just shoot them three or four times to put 'em down. Rocket Soldier: looks like a rifleman with a long black gun; he shoots a rocket at you that is a little weaker than your own Hydra, but he may be back up for a stronger enemy. These guys also hide out in buildings and ambush you when you look to see what's inside. The good news is this soldier can only take two or three hits. Attack Vans: These are blue Volkswagon vans with terrorists shooting out the sunroof, just like in Back to the Future. They have 100 armor, so you should waste them with a missile. Heavily Armored Terrorist Attack RV (HARV): These big blue RVs are hard to miss, but they pack a wallop with their missiles (100 damage, like your own!). They have 150 armor, so you will need a missile and some Hydras to take these out. If you are good at strafing, you can pound HARVs with Hydras rather than use up missiles. Tactical: This is the name given by the game, but it should be called Truck, because that's what it is. Tacticals have 100 armor and shoot bullets that do 30 damage. There are smaller versions (they look like brown El Caminos) that are weaker. These guys are easy; just fire away with Hydras or guns. Guard Tower: This is a rifleman stationed on top of a tower. Just fire at him until he falls to his death. Gatling Gun: This large gun is manned by one dude who fires LOTS of puny bullets at you. With 150 armor, you'll need to dodge bullets while you use your heavier weapons. The turn rate is really slow, so you should use strafing or overhead attacks. Twin Gun: Same as the Gatling Gun, but it has two turrets for double-firepower. They are still pretty tame. Anti-Aircraft Artillery: Looks like a cannon on a trailer hitch. It fires a moderately powerful bullet (25 damage) and has 100 armor. They turn very slowly, so use the same strategy as you would use against the big Guns. Gun Boat: The boats have 100 armor, but shoot powerful 75-damage shots. They also move VERY fast, so you should Hydras for accurate, fast damage. You only meet these in Mission 2, and you have to use the hovercraft. As such, you need to be careful about getting too close, or you will bounce off and take lots of damage as you lose control. Enemy Helicopter: These look just like your old chopper from Desert Strike, and they have 300 armor and shoot powerful rockets that do 150 damage. You can't use overhead attacks because they are at your altitude, so you need to use strafing. Try to stay far away so that you have plenty of room for dodging the rockets. Enemy helicopters don't move for some reason, so you should be able to do your strafing runs in a hit and run pattern. Start to the southwest or southeast, then strafe past and fire Hydras at the chopper. Keep strafing until you see no more enemy fire. Then strafe back the other way until you hear the BOOM that tells you the chopper is dead. Sheridan Tank: 150 armor, fast 30-damage bullets. These tanks are not the worst you will face, but you should practice your overhead attacks on these guys. You will be grateful for the practice later. Armored Car (ACAR): 150 armor and quick 35-damage bullets. These are much like Sheridans MLRS (Mobile Launchers): 300 armor... fast and multiple 30-damage rockets... MLRSs are not to be underestimated. You should NEVER approach these if you don't have to, and even then you should use only missiles. If you try to use Hydras, you will take a lot of damage (unless you rock at the overhead attack). Mobile Cannon: 400 armor and 200-damage rockets might scare you, but these are in fact not so bad. They shoot slowly and the rockets are pretty slow themselves. Also, they sometimes drop Ammo. Use the overhead attack or southern strafing to take these guys down. M1 Battle Tank: 250 armor and a devastating 75-damage shot. M1 tanks are so powerful that you should never go near them. You can use overhead attacks to take out the ones you HAVE to go near, but it would make your life much easier to just stay away from them. Nuclear Attack Submarine: In Mission 2, you will need to destroy four submarines that slowly inch across the ocean. They fire rockets from their deck gun and have 500 armor. You have to use the hovercraft against them, but for some reason I can never place a sea mine in the right spot to blow up a submarine. What I do is grab an Ammo crate and use the southern strafing technique to pound the submarine to the bottom of the ocean. If you can figure out how to properly place those mines, they supposedly take out a sub in one blow. VII. General Tactics -------------------- 1. Always choose "no momentum" for your control settings. This makes flying a lot easier and makes your maneuvering more precise (although it is possible to do an elaborate "circling" move with the full momentum... I think this move is too hard and not worth the extra difficulty of flying around) 2. There is plenty of Fuel and Ammo on every map, so don't worry about making every shot count or taking longer routes (to avoid enemies). However, Armor is more scarce AND more precious. You should not grab an Armor item unless you are below 400, and even then, you should drop off people at LZ's for bonus armor (if you have some) or fight a few easier enemies before picking up an Armor. 3. The first time you play a mission, go shoot up all the buildings to see what is inside. Then you can plan your mission better the second time, knowing where hidden Fuel, Ammo, and Armor is. 4. Always pick up the maximum number of people from a building before heading to a landing zone. 5. Sometimes in your zeal for combat, you shoot a hostage or other vital person and thus end your prospects for victory. To avoid such mishaps, check your mission data to see if you need to rescue/capture anyone, AND clear out all enemies BEFORE hitting the building. 6. You usually don't need to do everything exactly right. If you see the message "Mission Accomplished" that means you did enough of it to go on to the next one. 7. Finally, the cardinal rule: when in doubt, CHECK THE MAP! The map has all kinds of info about your objectives and the location of items. If you plan ahead and think about where you can get more items as you progress, you will fare much better than just randomly flying around looking for trouble. VIII. Walkthrough ----------------- ***************************** * Mission 1 - Washington DC * ***************************** The game begins when Carlos Ortega and Kilbaba test a nuclear weapon. This catches the attention of the United States, and we learn that the terrorist forces of the two madmen have already descended on the capitol! You must jump in your chopper and defend Washington from their diabolical plans. In this mission, if you approach a building and a name appears at the bottom of the screen it means you will LOSE if that building gets destroyed (by you or terrorists). You can shoot up other buildings to search for items. Objective 1: Protect the Monuments ---------------------------------- Your map marks three monuments. They are under attack by terrorists. Shoot them before they shoot the buildings. Library of Congress - HARVs appear one at a time to attack the Library. There are about five of them, so carefully dodge their slow missiles as you destroy them. The last one will reward you with an Armor. Washington Monument - HARVs and soldiers are attacking this monument. Shoot away, but don't leave until you are sure no more enemies are coming (check your map to see if the icon disappears). Jefferson Memorial - This monument is surrounded by attack vans, so I start zipping off missiles to take them out qucikly. Objective 2: Terrorist HQs -------------------------- There are three houses taken over by terrorists. They will be marked once you complete the previous objective, but gunmen and sometimes armored vehicles will be waiting for you. Take out enemies ALL THE WAY AROUND THE HOUSE, then shoot it open. A gunman will run out after a hostage, so make sure to shoot the terrorist and not the hostage. After you complete this, you will obtain information on what the car bombs look like. They are green station wagons. Objective 3: Car Bombs ---------------------- Once you know what the car bombs look like, they will drive off toward their target as you approach. They shoot at you too, so it is easy to spot them. Just gun them down with Hydras or guns. Objective 4: Rescue Agent Akbar ------------------------------- Your source of info is a secret infiltrator in the terrorist network. He must have blown his cover, because he needs rescuing. His house will be marked in the southeast. When you shoot the house open, it reveals terrorist gunmen as well as Akbar. Carefully pick them off and rescue Akbar, who tells you about the president's motorcade and the plot to kill him as his car approaches the White House. Objective 5: Presidential Motorcade ----------------------------------- This is an easy mission if you take it one road block at a time. Make sure to fill up on ammo before you start. Go to the southwest corner of the map. The president's limousine is there, but a gunman and roadblock are in the way. Shoot the gunman and then the roadblock. The limo starts to move, but you should zip up the street really fast. The limo won't move while it is off your screen. You will find enemies and road blocks along the road. Shoot up the enemies (attack vans, HARVs, gunmen) up to a roadblock. Then go back for the limo. Watch it as it approaches the roadblock and shoot the barrier out of its way. Now zip up the street again and repeat. The limo's route will go west toward the CIA building. When you start getting closer to that building, fly over to see if there is a guy in a white shirt there. If you see him, pick him up. It's the sniper! You should not let the limo approach this building until you capture the sniper. Once the limo gets to the White House lawn, you are home free. Land once the president is safely inside, and you win. ************************** * Mission 2 - Sub Attack * ************************** Now the action moves south to Central America. Your missions will be to systematically dismantle the Ortega's infrastructure and to prevent Ibn Kilbaba from delivering various weapons to the criminal gang. In this mission, you have to prevent the movement of plutonium from Kilbaba's ships to the drug lord's forces on land. A large bridge prevents your chopper from getting to the shore and the main part of the map, but you will quickly find the hovercraft. With this vehicle, you can break up the nuclear plot. Objective 1: Rescue Navy SEALS ------------------------------ In order to find the plutonium shipments, you need to rescue the SEAL team that was supposed to do this mission in the first place. They are marked on the map and under fire from a couple of gunmen. Take them out and pick up the SEALS. Take them to the spot marked on your map so they can get in their own chopper. They tell you where you can find the hovercraft to reach the shore. Objective 2: Get in the Hovercraft ---------------------------------- There are rocket soldiers and gunmen protecting the hovercraft. Shoot them and then land on the big neon helipad. Your pilot will run into the hovercraft. Objective 3: Stop the Plutonium Shipments ----------------------------------------- The story here is that boats are carrying the plutonium to trucks, and you must stop them. The reality is that some boats have plutonium and some trucks already have their shipment. Follow your map markers to find them. After you destroy the boat/truck, the plutonium will be left behind. Slowly drive over the plutonium to pick it up. The trucks will zig zag around, but shouldn't give you too much trouble. It's the boats that are a pain. You should always be firing Hydras. Also, the trucks that don't move are "waiting" for shipments (they will never receive a shipment), but if you blow them up you will find that they already have some sweet cargo. You will find Armor, Ammo, and even an extra life! Objective 4: Rescue F-15 Pilot ------------------------------ The downed F-15 pilot is under fire from a gunman and AAA cannon. Destroy them both and SLOWLY run over the pilot to pick him up. It is Faceman, and he will automatically take over as copilot, at which point you will see a dramatic improvement in your fire control and firing rate. Objective 5: Destroy the Nuclear Attack Subs -------------------------------------------- The nuclear subs are marked one at a time on your map. Use the information in the Enemies section to kill them. Make sure to take plenty of ammo to fight each sub. When you sink all four, return to your chopper, then return to the helipad. ******************************* * Mission 3 - Training Ground * ******************************* Kilbaba is furious that the Drug Lord's security forces botched the plutonium shipments, and he yells a lot. Carlos Ortega assures Kilbaba that the plutonium that they did get ashore will be enriched into powerful weapons, and if the American chopper tries to strike the training camp, the anti-aircraft forces will destroy him!!! This mission is really dangerous. There are a lot of Sheridan tanks, Gatling Guns, and rocket soldiers. Avoid tanks and guns when possible, and check your map a lot to help. Objective 1: Training Camps --------------------------- There are four guard towers and four campsites. Your targets are the towers, but you can blow up the campsites for extra fun. These are really easy. Objective 2: Secure the Landing Zone ------------------------------------ First, destroy the guards around the landing zone. Then go pick up the Green Beret from the jungle. Drop him back at the LZ to complete the objective. Objective 3: Mobile Radar 1 --------------------------- Three mobile radars will show up on your map. They are escorted by Sheridans and guns, so approach with caution. I usually just shoot the radars from a distance and leave the enemies alone. If you want to take on the tanks, make sure to keep the tank between your chopper and the radar. This way, the tank will take the hit. If you see your shots going away from the tank to the radar, you need to realign your chopper. Objective 4: Communications Expert ---------------------------------- This is the first of the main objectives. You need to break the communications expert out of a POW camp and then escort him to the phone lines where he will put a wiretap on the Drug Lord's communications. There are Gatling Guns, guard towers, and gunmen all around the POW camp, so be careful there. Objective 5: Tank Depot ----------------------- The middle of the map is covered with active and inactive Sheridan tanks. There are also guard towers and a Gatling Gun. This is the hardest part of the mission, so be sure to stock up on ammo before you go. If you take a lot of damage against an enemy, retreat and look for Armor. Destroy all the inactive tanks and continue. Objective 6: Mobile Radar 2 --------------------------- Same as before, except there are more enemies. Objective 7: Training HQ ------------------------ The camp's commander is holed up in a tent. Destroy the various enemies keeping watch, then blow the roof off his tent. Capture him to find out where the nuclear reactors are (there are three tents, actually, and a commander in each one). Objective 8: Neutralize the Nuclear Reactor ------------------------------------------- The captured commanders will tip you off to the location of the nuclear reactor. Approach with caution because there are some Gatling Guns around. Clear them out. One of the warehouses has a Gatling Gun inside it, so be careful about opening them. When you find the giant crate with a big "nuclear" symbol on the side, shoot short bursts of gunfire until it opens. Now pick up the reactor and head for the designated landing zone! **************************** * Mission 4 - Night Strike * **************************** Ortega and Kilbaba have kidnapped several scientists to work on chemical weapons. The area is heavily fortified, so you will have to take your Comanche in at night. This mission can be difficult at first, but if you are vigilant you will succeed. Check your map very frequently to see the location of tough enemies, and shoot open any of the neon circles you see (I have no idea what these are supposed to be, but they have gunmen and items in them). You should find plenty of Armor for this mission. Objective 1: Destroy the Watch Towers ------------------------------------- As you approach the marked points on your map, you will see a blue blob with a gunman on top shooting at you. Rock his world. Watch out for back-up enemies hiding in the jungle. Objective 2: Escort the Green Beret to the Landing Zone ------------------------------------------------------- Northwest of your starting position is a large clearing guarded by many enemies. There is also a big, glow-in-the-dark helipad. Kill the enemies around the helipad, then check your map to find the Green Beret (he is waving a signal flare, so he's hard to miss). Land at the helipad and he will secure it, turning it into a Landing Zone for later objectives. Objective 3: Destroy Enemy Choppers and Helipads ------------------------------------------------ This is the hardest part of the mission. Start with the southwestern marker on your map. A few of these helipads are undefended and you can blow them up with no problem, but the rest are guarded by a helicopter. From the first marker, start hovering and visit each marker in a northeast route. When you see a rocket shoot at you, that's an enemy chopper, so start a southern strafing maneuver to kill him. With this strategy you should take very little damage, but make sure to check your map to avoid other types of enemy. Objectives 4 and 5: Rescue POWs and Scientists ---------------------------------------------- On the north edge of the map is a large series of clearings. The clearings have a network of pit-prisons in which the hostages are held captive. This entire area is only protected by riflemen and rocket soldiers, but there are a lot of them. While you gun one guy down, you might find rockets flying up your tailpipe. As such, you should start at the east edge of the area and carefully kill all soldiers by flying north-south routes and firing a lot. Ideally, you should not shoot open any of the prisons until you are sure that the enemy soldiers are wiped out because a single accidental death will ruin you on this objective. If you get in a pickle and have very low armor, free a few hostages from an area you already cleared and drop them off at the LZ for some bonus armor. Objective 6: Destroy the Weapons Plant -------------------------------------- This is the second hardest objective. The chemical weapons plant is actually a series of buildings spread all over the west edge of the map. You need to destroy the buildings AND blow up any planes you see (they are the carriers for the weapons). The hard part is that there are enemies all over the place. Luckily, there are also a number of Armor items stashed about. Shoot open every building you see to keep your Ammo, Fuel, and Armor at healthy levels. Objective 7: Capture the Field Commander ---------------------------------------- In the southwest area, there are some shacks. Shoot them open one by one until you find the enemy commander. He will make a break for the jungle, so nab him. Take him back to your helipad to win the mission. *************************** * Mission 5 - Puloso City * *************************** Aside from Ortega's evil union with Kilbaba, the Drug Lord is involved in plenty of run-of-the-mill criminal activity. Drug refinement, counterfeiting, and human rights abuse in the form of coerced labor. The center of these activities is a town called Puloso City, and your mission is to wreck Ortega's criminal infrastructure and capture his local crime boss. Again, there are plenty of items on this map, but you have to blow open every building you see. Several enemies will drop items as well. Objective 1: Rescue the UN and Other Hostages --------------------------------------------- There are three prisons to the east; each is guarded by a tactical truck and riflemen. Keep an eye open for any rocket soldiers as you take out the guards. Then blow open the prison and rescue six of the seven hostages that run out. Return them to the UN HQ near the starting helipad and go to the next prison. Don't worry about the extra person from each prison. Taking six from each prison is enough to complete the objective. If you want, grab the last three after you are done for future armor bonuses. Objective 2: Destroy the Drug Plants ------------------------------------ These are guarded by more tacticals and also some heavy stuff. Inside you will find gunmen AND maybe scientists. Don't kill the scientists if you can avoid it. Pick up the packs of drugs and destroy any other equipment. With the scientists you rescue and any extra hostages from the first objective, you should have a near-full load in your chopper. If you are about to die, go drop your passengers at UN HQ. Objective 3: Destroy the Counterfeiting Operation ------------------------------------------------- There are three MLRS hanging around here, but that's not the important part. Note that there are two types of building here: one short style building that is marked on your map and a second larger type of building that is not marked. The larger ones contain armored cars that are impervious to your chopper's weapons, SO DON'T SHOOT THOSE BUILDINGS YET!!! The two MLRS near the middle of the complex are easy enough to destroy with strafing or overhead attacks. The northern one is trickier. DO NOT APPROACH from the south; you will be stuck between two buildings and the MLRS will rip you to pieces. Rather, come from the east and load off a ton of firepower, then turn and do it again. You should knock it out and take only one hit, if any. Objective 4: Knock Out the Power Grid ------------------------------------- Find the power lines along the west edge of the map. Blow up the towers, but keep an eye out for riflemen and tacticals. Objective 5: Destroy the Armored Cars ------------------------------------- The large buildings you ignored earlier must now be destroyed and the armored cars taken out. However, you will first need to find the motorbike. From the power grid, head southeast. You will find a building with a radar dish on the corner and a police car out front. A bunch of guys are shooting at you and there are two big circles on the other side. This is the location of the motorbike. Take out the measly defenders and land your chopper. Jump on the bike and head for the big buildings. Blow them up to release the armored cars. As you approach an armored car, it will fire on you, but do not try to engage it with normal weapons. Instead, drive quickly into the path of the armored car and lay down a land mine (the missile button). The car will run over it and be completely destroyed. Turn back to nab the detonator it was carrying. When you take all of them out, proceed back to your chopper and lift off. Objective 6: Snag the Detonators -------------------------------- In the previous objective, you will notice a small red object left behind in the armored car's wreckage. Pick it up; it is the detonator (you can come back for these in your chopper if you want). Objective 7: Get the C-4 ------------------------ Head to the building on your map and take out the few guards. You will see some C-4 hanging out, so grab it. Objective 8: Destroy the Drug Lord's War Room --------------------------------------------- There are two buildings in the north. There will be a few guys waiting, so kill them right away. Then land so your copilot can infiltrate the building. As he works, you will need to shoot the gunmen who run out of the buildings. Many will come out, one by one, until finally your copilot comes back out. So don't just shoot everything you see; look at the person running out. If you can tell friend from foe, fire at enemies. Otherwise, wait for the person to shoot or wave, then act accordingly. Land back at the base to complete the mission. ***************************** * Mission 6 - Snow Fortress * ***************************** The Ex-Soviet general is delivering warheads to the criminal duo, so you need to capture him and prevent the delivery. This is the first mission with the deadly M-1 Battle Tanks. As I said before, you should simply avoid these whenever possible. The items are hidden in the snow banks, cabins, and other lumps you see sticking out of the snow. The only thing you SHOULD NOT shoot are the cabins with big chimnies. These can not be destroyed until much later. Objective 1: Rescue Wild Bill ----------------------------- The POW camp is on the northwest corner, so go over there (watch out for the tanks) and destroy the guns around the camp. Now shoot open the cabins and rescue the pilots inside (one of them is Wild Bill). If you want to drop off the extra pilots for bonus armor, you have to go to the small village near the middle of the north edge and secure the landing zone. Look for the igloo. Shoot enemies nearby, then shoot up the igloo until it stops taking damage. It should now appear as the landing zone on your map. Wild Bill is now your copilot, and he rules the skies. Objective 2: Destroy the Radar Sites ------------------------------------ Spread out around the southern area are mobile radars like in the desert mission. There are ALSO M-1 Battle Tanks, so avoid them. Take out the Guns nearby and shoot the radars from a safe spot. Objective 3: Destroy the Missile Depot -------------------------------------- The fenced area you just flew all over is the missile depot. Shoot up the buildings to reveal missiles inside. Shoot those as well. Objective 4: Capture the Soviet General --------------------------------------- His camp is on the west edge of the map, guarded by several large guns. There are also cabins all about, filled with great stuff. Shoot open everything to see what's inside. When you capture the general, he offers information in exchange for asylum in the United States. What a jerk. Objective 5: Destroy the Launchers ---------------------------------- These are marked on your map now, but they also have protectors. Don't just fly right at these guys. With Wild Bill as your copilot, you should be able to hit the launcher at the edge of the screen if you can see it. Objective 6: Cut the Power Lines -------------------------------- This objective is difficult because there are unavoidable M-1 Tanks in the area AND those pesky electrical towers get in your way. You have to be very careful about taking out the tanks. Once you blow up enough tanks to shoot at the power lines safely, take them out. Then destroy the generator building to complete the objective. The crater will be filled with goodies. Objective 7 and 8: Capture the Warheads from the Snow "Fortresses" ------------------------------------------------------------------ In the large-chimnied cabins, you will see smoke now. Shoot them open to find the warheads. There are enemies inside, but kill them carefully so you don't destroy the warhead. Collect all the warheads to complete the objective and the mission. ************************** * Mission 7 - River Raid * ************************** This is the mission where you get to fly the super-plane. At first, this will be very fun. But later, you will get frustrated with that plane. When turning the plane, you will swing wide, SO BE VERY CAREFUL. There are tall skull totems around the map. You should avoid these like the plague, but if you fly between them, you had better not try to turn hard because you will almost certainly blow up. I should note that hitting the edge of the map does not blow you up. You will start at the north edge of the map in the helicopter. Before you go anywhere, fly east to the corner of the map. You will see a big stone arch and two small stone pyramids. Destroy the small pyramids for several extra lives! Now you can do something to make your life easier. Go to the southeast corner (avoid enemies) and take out the Sheridan tanks and other enemies there. Now shoot up the big fuel tanks there (nine in all). This will complete objective five WAY out of order, but it is REALLY hard to do this objective in the plane. Continue to the middle of the map to the first objective. Objective 1: Secure the F-117X Stealth Fighter ---------------------------------------------- In the middle of the map you will find a hangar surrounded by enemies. Kill them all and shoot the brown tarp near the landing strip. You will uncover the stealth fighter and be able to switch to it. Do so. Objective 2: Destroy the Troop Bridges -------------------------------------- All around the river you will find bridges guarded by various troops. Destroy these to hamper enemy movement (the enemies won't actually move anywhere, as you know from previous missions, but this is the description given by the game). Objective 3: Destroy the Drug Fields ------------------------------------ Ortega's drug fields are the source of his criminal activity, so destroying the fields and the greenhouses will neuter him. There are many gunmen around both sites, but there are also Twin Guns around the greenhouses. Just remember that you have infinite ammo, so fire away! Objective 4: Destroy the Patriot Missiles ----------------------------------------- After you destroy the drug fields, you will see missile launchers marked on your map. Some are protected by Twin Guns, others are just sitting out in the open. One is hidden behind a large stone temple, so approach it by flying along the west edge of the map. Objective 5: Destroy the Fuel Depot ----------------------------------- If you didn't do this objective in the chopper, you may want to land and get it. It will be easier to do it that way. If you REALLY want to use the plane, you should weave through the fuel tanks and destroy the Sheridans and enemies BEFORE you go after the fuel tanks. When you are ready, start flying in a circle (just hold the left or right button to fly in a steady circle). Fire your guns and see if some of the bullets hit a fuel tank. If so, keep firing (look for the brown puff that indicates hits) until you blow up the tank. If you aren't hitting anything, you need to edge closer. As your spin starts taking you toward a fuel tank, let go of your directional for a second, then hit it again and hold. You will be in essentially the same circle pattern, but a little closer to the fuel tank. You can pretty close to it if you want, but keep testing bullets to see if you are close enough. Needless to say, you should start with fuel tanks on the edge of the depot so that you have plenty of space to circle about. Objective 6: Destroy the Nuclear Missiles ----------------------------------------- Ortega is hiding his nuclear missile assemblies inside large stone temples. You need to blow open the temple and then take out the stuff inside. This is very difficult because as far as I can tell, you can NOT use the chopper to blow up these temples. You have to use the circling method described above, except that it is harder to find a good spot. I prefer to circle near the right or left corner of the temple (I prefer the right side, but some can not be approached from this side). It may take a while to blow up the temple this way, so if you manage to connect with some bullets, you could switch to Hydras. I don't know of a way to get a bomb close enough. If at any point you have more lives left than temples to destroy, go ahead and crash your plane into the temple for an instant kill. You will have to fly back to the site to destroy the nuclear assembly, but it beats waiting for your bullets to stray close enough. Once the temple is a crater, use Hydras or bombs to destroy the men and equipment below. It may look like your bombs don't hit the stuff below, but you will eventually hit them dead on and blow them up. Objective 9: Land the Stealth Fighter ------------------------------------- Head toward the southwest end of the landing strip. Fly along the strip, but stay a little off-center. Lower your altitude to the minimum and try to edge toward the middle of the strip. Eventually, you will lose control of the plane which means you are landing. If you can still jink your plane around after a while, you should increase altitude to avoid hitting your chopper, and then start over. While landing, your plane may suddenly slow down. I don't know why this happens but it actually means you are about to land correctly. It's some bug that didn't get fixed. Anyway, once you've landed, you will get back in your chopper. Fly back to the helipad you started from. ************************* * Mission 8 - Mountains * ************************* This is a fun mission, and the hard part is surviving the first objective. There are tons of items around this map hidden in little stone pyramids. Really, no buildings are off-limits, so shoot at anything that looks like it might have items. Your mission is to capture the Carlos Ortega and Ibn Kilbaba after tracking them down in their mountain hideout. Objective 1: Destroy the Control Towers --------------------------------------- Before you can track down the two super-criminals, you must knock out the nerve center of their defenses. A series of control towers is marked on your map, so head that way. The bad news is that there are a bunch of Sheridans waiting for you. The good news is that there is plenty of Armor nearby AND this will be the hardest part of the mission. Take out the Sheridans one by one with the overhead attack, and keep going north to find Armor (one control tower also has extra Armor). Objective 2: Destroy the Tomahawks ---------------------------------- In the southwest area, the large stone boulders are really Tomahawk Missile launchers. Use your map to find them and shoot the rock open to find and destroy the missiles. Also, you will find many Mobile Guns down here. I suggest that you use your map to simply avoid them. The best position to aim at the rocks is from the north. Objective 3: Cut the Power Supply --------------------------------- The power supply is just like the Snow Fortress objective. Destroy the electrical towers and then the generator building (which reveals goodies). Watch out for a few bad guys nearby. Objective 4: Ortega's Villa --------------------------- Now you are ready to apprehend Carlos Ortega. Go to his villa where you will find Sheridans, tacticals (trucks), and rocket soldiers. Carefully destroy them before you attempt to destroy the villa. There is Armor nearby, so don't worry too much about getting hit. Once you destroy the outer forces, you can start firing at the villa. Soldiers will come out to shoot at you, so kill them when you see them. You may be able to catch a soldier on the other side of the villa. He will stay there and fire, but hit the villa instead. This will keep other enemies from coming AND keep you from getting hit AND help destroy the villa. Objective 5: Capture the Drug Lord ---------------------------------- Turns out that Ortega wasn't at his villa. He is trying to escape in a boat! Go over to the boathouse and carefully destroy his boat so you can capture him. Objective 6: Neutralize the Air Strip ------------------------------------- Kilbaba will probably try to fly to safety, so head to the airstrip and blow up all the planes and defenses you see. Objective 7: Penetrate the Bunker --------------------------------- The large bunker is heavily armored. Fire all you have at it until you see an explosion. You won't destroy it, but the explosion means the heavy armor has been removed. You should try to replenish your Fuel, Ammo, and Armor if you can find some. Objective 8: Capture the Madman ------------------------------- Land your chopper at the little helipad nearby. Your copilot will get out and drive the nearby truck up to the bunker. Pick him up when he gets out, then fly away a little bit. The truck explodes, opening the bunker. But Kilbaba tries to escape in a chopper, so follow it and shoot him down. Then pick him up to complete the mission. Congratulations, you've saved America! ...... or have you? *************************** * Mission 9 - Return Home * *************************** Oh no! The criminals have escaped and their comrades have come to help them escape from justice. It's time to forget about due process and send these two to meet their maker. This mission is very difficult and requires the only strict ammo conservation in either Desert Strike or Jungle Strike. The hard part is surviving the first three objectives, and this is compounded by the fact that you need to save four full loads of ammo for the final objective. Objective 1: Escort Marine One to Safety ---------------------------------------- The game refers to the President's helicopter as "Air Force One," but this is incorrect. The President's PLANE is called Air Force One, and the President's HELICOPTER is called Marine One. In any event, take off fast because Marine One won't wait for you. Assume the southern strafing position and go out ahead of the President. Fire your guns as you look for rocket soldiers. There are several groups of two on the way to the edge of the map. It's a short route, but you should not underestimate the power of the rocket soldiers. You want to kill them all and get Marine One to safety while maintaining about 800-900 Armor. Objective 2: Destroy Enemy Weapons ---------------------------------- This is the hard part. There are fifteen Armored Cars spread around the map. You must destroy them all. One Hellfire and two/three Hydras will kill one, but some of them move which makes them harder to hit, especially with missiles. Use the overhead attack and don't fire a missile unless you are sure it will hit your target. This means you should wait to fire at a moving Armored Car until you are very close to it. There are two extra Armors on the map, and you should go grab them when you are in danger. There are also some rocket soldiers around which can easily kill you if you are running from Armored Cars with low armor. With great skill, you should be able to complete this objective with two lives remaining and most of your armor intact (having used up two Armor refills and one life). REMEMBER, you need to end up with FOUR FULL AMMO sets available for the final objective, so DO NOT use a bunch of missiles on each Armored Car. Use one missile at most, and then guns or Hydras to finish it off. Objective 3: Capture the Enemy Generals --------------------------------------- Two generals are leading the attack to free their bosses. They are riding in the heavily armored cars from Puloso City, except you can destroy these ones. A mounted gun on the car will do lots of damage to you if you can not master the overhead attack. Remember, you can't just fire a bunch of missiles and Hydras because you need them for later. Each car goes round and round a particular path, so you can actually use southern strafing if you prefer it, but you will need to pass out of the car's screen range in order to avoid bullets as you turn back. I find that guns are perfectly acceptable to use against these enemies. Pick up the generals for info on the whereabouts of the two master criminals. You won't be able to go after either one until both generals are captured. Basically, by saving two lives for this part you can take a ton of hits and still survive. Once you do, you have to face zero guns (except for possible gunmen and rocket soldiers you overlooked). Objective 4: Kill Carlos Ortega ------------------------------- On the north edge of the map, you will see a big white and blue bus. Ortega is headed for home, so shoot his bus to smithereens (use ONLY guns to conserve other ammo). Objective 5: Kill Ibn Kilbaba ----------------------------- Near the area southeast of the White House, you will see a semi-truck. It is Kilbaba, and who knows where he is headed. Shoot him up with guns, then watch the death scene (looks like your game is freezing at first, but it's not). The madness is finally over... but wait! The danger is not over yet! Objective 6: Prevent Nuclear Annihilation ----------------------------------------- The remaining forces of the enemy have decided to make a suicide run in a last attempt to screw the United States. They have rigged four semi-trucks with nuclear weapons (those guys had a LOT of nuclear weapons...) and they are driving straight for 1600 Pennsylvania. The four trucks appear one at a time like the attack subs in Mission 2. Before you go to destroy one, look at your ammo supply. You want 9 missiles and plenty of Hydras. If you have few Hydras but plenty of bullets, that will be okay. An easy way to find each truck is to check your map for the general area, then go to the White House fence nearest that area and look for a gate. The truck will crash through that gate, so follow it away from the White House and you will find the truck. As soon as you see it, fire guns or Hydras as it goes under you. Then turn and fire more. Once you feel you have a good firing position, start dropping missiles on that truck. Once you use up your missiles, fire your guns and/or Hydras (it's possible to fire them both at once by holding the guns button and tapping the Hydras button) to finish it off. If the truck hits the White House, you lose... although your commander makes a comment about redecorating the White House "Beirut-style," an allusion to the truck bomb that blew up a Marine barracks in Lebanon in the 80's... You should be ashamed of yourself... The last truck is the hardest because it seems to have a slightly shorter path than the other trucks. I can destroy the others before they even get in sight of the White House, but the last truck always gets within sniffing range of the back door. Once you destroy that truck... you win! IX.
