Walkthrough - Kali Kali Valley - The Deep Tropics - Murky Swampland ·---------------------------------------------------------------------------· | INTRODUCTION | ·---------------------------------------------------------------------------· Some of you may recognize me at that freak who already wrote a FAQ for Joe & Mac. Well, obviously, this is a guide for the sequel, Joe & Mac 2: Lost in the Tropics. Of course, the game is still a platformer but for once, the sequel is way better than the original. There are a lot of new features and your action possibilities have doubled. You can now use various weapons, have completely different stages where you are in a cart and can even kill some enemies just by jumping onto them like that other famous platformer. It's not in my habit to give complete reviews in my FAQs because I almost always write separate reviews. Let me just tell you that if you are a lot into platformers or played and liked the prequel, get this game. And, er, read my guide. :) ·---------------------------------------------------------------------------· | CONTROLS | ·---------------------------------------------------------------------------· The controls can be changed in the options before you start the game. These are the default controls. Moreover, I will not refer to the controls during the walkthough but instead, I will use the words (i.e. jump, dash...) to avoid any misunderstandings. Right : Move to the right Left : Move to the left Down : Crouch, climb down rope Up : Aim up, climb up rope A : Jump B : Jump X : Attack Y : Attack L : Dash R : Dash Select : No use Start : No use ·---------------------------------------------------------------------------· | GAME BASICS | ·---------------------------------------------------------------------------· Before I start with the walkthrough, here are certain aspects of the game that you need to know if you want to beat it. There are also some notes on the gameplay in general so you do know what will expect you throughout your prehistoric adventure. ~ By pressing up and the attack button with some special shots, you can fire up. ~ To take any item or weapon, you need to be standing on the same location. Then, simply press down (i.e. crouch) and Joe (or Mac) will take it. ·---------------------------------------------------------------------------· | WALKTHROUGH | ·---------------------------------------------------------------------------· ============================================================================= STAGE 1 [KALI KALI VALLEY] ============================================================================= ·----------------· === KALI KALI VALLEY ======================================================== ·----------------· Proceed to the right after Joe is done with his funny taunt. A pink dino will come down the hill, so be prepared to either jump on it or to hit it. As you go down, you will meet 2 other dinos. The first one will usually leave a fruit, so don't forget to take it. You will probably not need it but take it anyway. Kill both of them before you grab the fruit though because otherwise, you run the risk of being hit while ght and kill the velociraptors. You will also encounter a couple of snails but these are easy to avoid if you wish. To the right is a man who can block your attacks, so try and take him by surprise. If you take too much time, he will retaliate and the ensuing dino won't spare you either if you are not careful enough. Afterwards, a velociraptor will come down really quickly and will attempt to charge at you. The best way to deal with it is to dash but you may still be hit if you didn't time your dash well. A more effective way would be to use your projectile but if you don't have one, try getting close to it and killing it with your stick. Once you reach the platforms, jump up and use the rope to go onto the ledge. Go to the left until you reach the edge of the screen where you'll be able to grab a roasted chicken. Once you're done, go back to the right. The bridge is a bit tricky. The logs will roll from time to time and if you're on one when this happens, you'll fall and die. Take your time to get used to the pattern and when you think you have it, proceed along the bridge. Don't try to just dash across, this never works! This is really impossible since you also have to deal with a couple of enemies on the bridge. When you meet them, try to kill them as quickly as possible since you can be fooled if you take too much time. When you reach the rope and the platforms, climb down first. Go a bit to the left and get the fruit. Next, go to the right and get all the coins. This is also a dead end, so go back to the rope and climb up. Jump quickly across the platforms and onto the ledge. Take the item and jump onto the next ledge where you'll have to kill an enemy. Climb down the rope and at the same location where you dropped down, crouch for a chilli, then go the right but be careful. At one point, a nerd will suddenly appear from below you and attempt to catch you. Don't try to kill him yet because this is very hard to do as he needs a lot of beating to understand. Run to the extreme left and he'll land just besides you. You may then proceed to the right and finish the other enemies. You cannot kill the one spinning the rock though. Wait until the rock is going up and quickly dash past him. Or you can walk slowly and crouch whenever the rock comes down again but be warned that it may still hit you depending on your location. Better yet, mix both. There's a good way to get past this point but you need to be familiar with the controls (easy thing to do, anyway). Walk and crouch just below the guy. As soon as the rock gets past you, get up again and dash. This works just fine but as I said, you must be quite familiar with J&M. Then, walk casually until you see the 2 sets of platforms. Jump onto them until you can climb up the rope and take the key. If you want, you can dash and jump to the left to take some food. Should you do this, there is no need to drop down and jump onto all the platforms again. Simply jump and you will land on the second platform and from there, it is easy to reach the rope. Drop down after climbing and use the key on the carved door. ·----------· === TAKA HILLS ============================================================== ·----------· Kill the enemy and cross the bridge -- same precautions as before! Climb down the rope and you'll see 4 holes and a worm going from one to another. You cannot kill the worm and besides, it doesn't even harm you. What you need to do here is jump onto the worm's body to reach the higher ledge. Try to get all the coins too by jumping over the worm when it is at its peak. This may take some time though but there's no time limit in this game and you will need the coins later. Cross the bridge afterwards and climb up the ropes. Go to the right and jump into cart for a hellish part of the game, the Wild Ride! ·-----------------------· === PREPARE FOR A WILD RIDE ================================================= ·-----------------------· Here, you'll be in the cart and have to avoid the enemies, jump onto the ledges when required and grab any items if you can. If you are a new player, I really advise you to forget about the items and just concentrate on getting through. This part is very tough and you can even lose all your lives if you are not careful enough. Jumping to grab items and coins may prevent you from jumping onto safe ground afterwards because there are almost always gaps after the items. The first bridge is normal, don't worry about it. You also cannot use your weapons and will need to avoid them, which is very hard to achieve since everything is so fast. Also note that if you die, you'll start at the Taka Hills and will still need to do the whole damn thing. Once you do manage to do this part, the cart will collide against a wall and Joe will drop down next to a Continue Statue. Go down the rope, take the food, and go down the next rope. Jump into the river and keep going to the left. You may kill the fish that swim towards you but it is easier to just jump over them. Some nerds will also throw arrows in the background and that's another reason why you should keep moving instead of stopping to take care of the fish. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * J & M Note : In any river, you can crouch and this will cause Joe (or Mac) to spit water-based projectiles. If you run out of projectiles, you can then use those but note that if you decide to drink the water while you do have any other weapon, you automatically lose the latter. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * From here, the obvious route is left. Jump onto the worm, try to reach for the rings if you want (this is the last time I'm saying it, these coins are like gifts, spend how much time you need to but take them!!), and jump onto the higher ledge. Go down the rope and drop into the next river. Dashing and jumping from above isn't recommended because this river is infested with piranhas and you'll very likely fall onto them. Struggle against the current and kill all the piranhas that you see since these can be very annoying. They will appear from nowhere and you will need to be careful here. If you're bold enough, don't climb the rope when you reach it. Continue to the left instead, grab the rings at the end and you can then return to the rope and climb up. Get the chilli from the tree and go on to the left. Jump onto the lower ledge and take the food. Climb down the rope but be careful of the guy that lurk next to it. He may jump anytime and attempt to hit you. Continue to the left next until you see the pillar of water. Jump onto it and it'll rise and a very funny scene will follow. ·-------------· === A STEGOSAURUS =========================================================== ·-------------· This isn't quite a platformer stage. You will be standing on a stegosaurus and will have to kill several enemies. Once you're done, go to the right and the level ends. Or so it seems... ·------------------------· === NIGHT TIME. SWEETDREAMS. ================================================ ·------------------------· Just when you thought everything was fine, a fool thinks it might be funny to wake up the stegosaurus and actually does it. As a result, you now have to go forward as quickly as possible because otherwise, you'll be the stegausaurus's dinner. If you are ever caught by it, you'll lose a life and so, you bet you'll have to be quick in this level. And if you need to pick any food, make sure you have a good start so you can take it. Jump to grab the weapon at the start of the level and move on, killing the enemies you encounter. The gaps with the rising pillars must be jumped over. Time your jumps well so they don't prevent you from reaching the next side. There is some food shortly after the second pillar. Once you move on and jump over a couple of gaps again, the stegosaurus decides it wants to be a boss and you are forced to defeat it if you want to move on. " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Boss : Stegosaurus "Houb houb houba dabuda!" If you cannot defeat Stegosaurus, I really advise you to drop the game right now and to go play Rayman. Truthfully, it is very easy. Its sole attack consists of opening its mouth and spitting some boulders but you can avoid these just by crouching. Remain on the far right and keep shooting if you have a projectile. Obviously, you will have to get close to it and attack with your stick if you don't have a projectile but even that is damn easy. Each time you hit it, it suddenly flashes and becomes invisible but that doesn't mean iy has really disappeared. Just keep pressing the attack button and aim for the mouth! After beating Stegosaurus, you will learn that you got your first stone. Only 6 to go! ============================================================================= STAGE 2 [THE DEEP TROPICS] ============================================================================= ·----------------· === THE TIKI VILLAGE ======================================================== ·----------------· The first part is quite like in an RPG as usual. Hit on the gong of the first hut for your password (see 'Passwords' section for the full list). In the second hut, you can buy items and food. Don't waste your money to repair your hut yet. Get some food instead. Or save your money! The third hut is the interesting one. Talk to the old man and he'll tell you that you need to collect the 7 rainbow stones before giving you the one he owns. Only 5 to go now! The fourth one will take you back to your village. And the fifth one will allow you to use a telescope to see a few places: (i) The Village, (ii) Gork's Cave, (iii) Joe's Hut, (iv) Mac's Hut. Once you're done, leave the village to continue your epic adventure. ~ ~ ~ From now on, you can choose which stage you want to do first. However, note that I'm sticking to the way I played the game and the walkthrough is thus divided in the same way. If you want to play the game in another order, just enter whatever level you want to do and look for the first part (the game always gives the name of that level as you start). You can thus safely use the walkthrough. ·----------------· === THE DEEP TROPICS ======================================================== ·----------------· The Deep Tropics is found to the right of Tiki Village. To enter it, you can pass by the mountains and you'll eventually reach it. As you enter, jump where you are for an apple. This will allow you to kill the velociraptor a few steps forward. Keep going right and jump on the log since the path is blocked by the tree. Then, jump from tree to tree and kill all the enemies you see. Be careful of the falling leaves, some of these hide insects and you'll lose some life if you touch these. Afterwards, jump from log to log. You won't die if you drop down, you will just lose some life but who the hell would want todo that?! :) At the end, you'll see a very big, green velociraptor. ·--------------· === TRY RIDING HIM ========================================================== ·--------------· The normal way of beating this stage is by riding the velociraptor (hence the level's name) but you can also screw it and do all the walking. Using the velociraptor does take less time but don't forget that you can leave it any time you want by pressing down & the jump button. But the velociraptor does remain where he is each time you leave it. So, you can leave it, fend off some enemies or take items, and ride it again. It automatically dies once it's hit though, so you'll have to walk along if that ever happens. The controls are pretty much the same as when you control Joe. Pressing the shoot button will have it fire some projectiles and press jump to have it fly higher. If you don't press the button, it drops down. Anyway, this part is very straightforward. With the velociraptor, just fly high up but drop down occasionally to see if there are any items worth taking. It is also way easier to kill all the enemies with it, so that makes another reason to take him. As Joe, walk on and climb up and down the ropes when necessary. Watch out for the plants near the end and go through the opening. If you were riding the velociraptor, Joe will jump off first. ·-----------------------· === TROUBLE IN THE TREETOPS ================================================= ·-----------------------· Climb the rope and go up the wooden stairway. The flies are quite annoying, so kill them as quickly as possible. No need to go down the following ropes since they don't lead anywhere. There is an apple behind the first bush which should prove quite helpful in killing all the velociraptors. Jump across the moving platform next and continue moving to the right. You can just jump over the platform to the other side if you wish, it's feasible but don't try it if you're not sure or if you are drunk. Go up the staircase and again, crouch behind the bush for an apple. Jump from platform to rope, from rope to rope, and from rope to platform until you reach the next treetop. Another velociraptor will be waiting for you and you can ride if you want to end the level quickly. Move on to the right and don't forget to take all the coins on top of the bigger tree. The freak there will also live 10 coins if you kill him, so do it right away! As Joe, jump onto the platforms and make sure you are not hit by the surrounding enemies. With the velociraptor, fly your way and avoid them or kill them to make sure they do not annoy you. You will eventually complete this level by going through another opening. ·----------------· === THE WINDY VALLEY ======================================================= ·----------------· Walk forward and take care of any enemies you encounter. Jump over the gaps and avoid the spikes. At one point, you will see a food item. As you grab it, you will get a "Watch out! Duck!" message. From now on, the screen will scroll forward which means you have to make sure you don't drop in the gaps. On top of that, a velociraptor will fly in from time to time and you need to duck to avoid it --hence the message. Anyway, try to remain in the middle of the screen as you will thus have enough time to avoid the gaps and it will be easier to avoid the birdie. But wait, the developers certainly thought that wasn't even tough. So, each time birdie flies in, you will be drawn back due to the wind. There is no way to avoid this, just make sure you don't end in a dangerous spot. Continue walking forward and kill the enemies. Use the moving platform when you see it and pray that birdie doesn't decide to come in just as you jump onto it. Grab the item and claim the highly-sought continue statue so you don't have to start everything again (note that the velociraptor doesn't fly in at this point but the screen will remain scrolling). As you come to another platform, you now have to face the velociraptor. " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Boss : Birdie "I believe I can fly!" As our Birdie first flies in, crouch on the platform. You'll thus easily avoid its first attack which is to come in abruptly and try to tear into your flesh with its claws. Otherwise, it really isn't that hard. Besides flying in, it will sometimes comes in with a couple of boulders. Whenever this happens, hop onto the platform and hit it once. It will automatically drop them and you just have to hop to a ledge since it'll then go back before returning will its flying attack. Keep using this strategy and you'll win in no time. You just need to be quick enough to hit it before it decides to retaliate. You'll get your third stone once you've defeated Birdie. ============================================================================= STAGE 3 [MURKY SWAMPLAND] ============================================================================= Stage 3 is directly below the second one. Cross the bridge and you're there. ·---------------· === MURKY SWAMPLAND ========================================================= ·---------------· Walk forward as you enter and you will encounter some flying insects which are very easy to kill. Jump into the "murky swampland" and proceed forward. Once you reach the end, climb the rope and you'll meet a pink dinosaur. I suppose you know what happens next... ·--------------· === TRY RIDING HIM ========================================================== ·--------------· The dino can fire fireballs, so you'd be a fool to not take it. Once you're safely sitting on its back, proceed to the right. Kill the couple of enemies and take the weapon for Joe. When you reach the cliff, let yourself drop down but press the left button as you do so. This way, you'll avoid hitting the enemies which are below you and thus, avoid losing the dino. Once you're at the bottom, shoot like a maniac to kill the handful of enemies. If you see ropes, you can leave the dino fora while and climb these to grab the items (mostly food). When you go back down, use the rope again. Jumping down can sometimes be dangerous. ;) You'll then need to walk in the marshes again. This part is much easier if you are still on the dino. Small velociraptors will come charging down while you're in here and these can be a drag to avoid. Nevertheless, continue to the right and kill all the enemies you encounter. The spikey bouncing balls cannot be killed, you'll have to avoid them. Walk to the right and the velociraptors will thankfully leave you alone. But you now have to deal with the bad guys who will try to trap you. Grab the item. If you climb the ropes, you'll reach a spot with a few coins and a key (which must makes this part compulsory :). However, you need to jump onto 3 plant firsts. If you stay more than two seconds on one, it'll open up and hurt you. You just need to jump as this happens and you'll make it through. Once you've collected the coins, make your way to the bottom of the screen again. Walk to the door and Joe will use the key! ·------------------· === TUNNEL OF HORRORS ======================================================= ·------------------· Walk to the right and climb down the rope until you drop into the water. You'll be dragged by the current and enemies randomly pop up, so be careful. Don't worry, these enemies can be killed. You can just keep mashing the Attack button if you wish. Jump onto the wooden bridge and kill the bad guys before moving forward. Note: if you touch the spike ends of the brige, you'll be hurt. Jump into the water again and let the current drag you --you're much safer this way. When you reach the waterfall and drop down, the current is reversed. Be careful as you drop here or you can get hurt by the spikes. Jump onto the raft where you'll see a dolphin-like prehistoric animal and you can just guess what lies ahead... ·--------------· === TRY RIDING HIM ========================================================== ·--------------· Note: This weird-looking animal's projectiles travel at an angle. You can miss your target if you are too close to it. Walk to the right and kill the enemies. Drop into the stream of water. If you scrapped the animal, you'll have to be careful of the pillars which are randomly raised. If you stay on one of those, you'll touch the spikes at the top of the screen and lose some life. Proceed along all the streams --well, actually, that's just 2 of them-- and you'll come to a dead end. Your only way here is by using the rope. Climb up and take the food at the top before escaping through the doorway. ·---------------· === OBSTACLES AHEAD ========================================================= ·---------------· Ahhh, back in the sunlight! You'd really get sick staying in those obscure places. :) Proceed forward and grab the coins by jumping from the ledge --don't go down the rope. As I said earlier, the bouncing round enemy cannot be killed, so avoid it. Take the next bunch of coins and continue to the right. Climb the rope at the end and you'll have to avoid another batch of these enemies. Go down the rope and repeat all over again --but these are a bit harder to avoid as they tend to cluster together, however they're very easy once you get the thang of it. Shortly later, you'll see a couple of food items and the continue statue. Just between us, that's not really good news. Whenever you see one of those, you can expect to encounter a boss pretty soon. Anyway, continue heading to the right. As you proceed forward, you reach a dead-end and a big, ugly face appears from the water. What did I tell you? " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " " ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Boss : Reptile "Mortal..." Ouch! This one can be quite hard but thankfully, you have a full life bar when you meet him --due to the couple of food items you got before. To get on with it, only its head is vulnerable. Aiming for its long neck won't change a damn thing. Reptile can shoot projectiles with its mouth. They come in three and can thus be tough to avoid. Time your jumps well, otherwise you will fall back on the last one. The good thing is that you can shoot at its head while you jump. Always make sure you can get a shot in whenever this happens because you won't get a lot of such occasions. From time to time, Reptile also feels it has to swim across the screen. It's probably taking a piss at the same time. When it does so, you can only see its fins which appear on both sides of the bridge. Just jump as these come close to Joe. Moreover, Reptile is pretty cheap! It will also disappear under the water and send a projectile from there. You may know when this will happen as you will see bubbles at the spot where the projectile will appear. Its last attack consists of using its tail but this attack is pretty lame and is never a threat. Just avoid its projectiles and shoot at it whenever it can. And remember, it's the head! You also have the opportunity to shoot at it when it deploys its long neck. However, this causes it to use its projectiles quickly afterwards and you may have trouble avoiding these then. You will get your third stone after defeating the bloody Reptile. ============================================================================= STAGE 4 [THE SNOWY ROCKIES] ============================================================================= To get to stage 4, you need to cross the bridge on the world map again. Go up, past Deep Tropics until you reach a snowy region. The Snowy Rockies is to the extreme left. ·-----------------· === THE SNOWY ROCKIES ======================================================= ·-----------------· As you walk forward, you'll see rats from out from the ground and dive in another spot. They almost always come in groups of 3. They can be killed but doing so is pretty tough and you may get hurt in the process. The best thing to do here is to crouch in-between the 2 spots. Continue moving to the right. At the end, jump onto the rope to trigger a message: "An avalanche! Hold on tight!" What happens next is that as you proceed forward, snow will drip down -- sometimes, an avalanche ; sometimes, mere snowballs. The avalance will cause your character to be dragged off-screen and you'll lose a life. The snowballs just announce the avalanche. To avoid the avalanche which a major threat, you need to be on a rope when it occurs. It's quite easy to know when there will be one as it happens just after the snowballs and the screen trembles. You just need to make sure there's a rope nearby and that shouldn't be too difficult. Next proceed forward and Joe will drop down. Move to the right and grab the food. Kill the enemies. There are also some pillars here. You can catch a glimpse of a few but others are completely hidden. If you stay on one as it is raised, you'll hit the spikes and get hurt. Go past the continue statue while trying to kill one enemy. You'l notice that it goes away as soon as you get close to it, thus making it possible to kill it. As you are able to get close to it, a giant pillar will bring you back to the top. ·---------------------------------------------------------------------------· | REVISION HISTORY | ·---------------------------------------------------------------------------· Ver 0.10 on 3/6/02 - A bare-bones release. I have only the first stage covered so far and the other sections are not complete too. Expect a lot of stuff to be added in the next update. Ver 0.20 on 6/18/02 - Stages 2 & 3 covered. The "Passwords" section has been removed because these aren't definite. Anyway, you can use those that have been posted at GameFAQs. ·---------------------------------------------------------------------------· | CREDITS | ·---------------------------------------------------------------------------· ~ Jeff "CJayC" Veasey For hosting my guides on his site. ~ Pyro Vesten For the ASCII title.
