TO put it simply, you can't make money off this FAQ, and do not change anything in it. If there's something you want changed, let me know! Note: Until recently I did have MSN Messenger and AOL IM, and on occasion I did allow people to contact me via those, but I didn't use them much and therefore saw no need to clutter up my computer's hard drive. I disposed of the IM programs. From now on, just E-mail me and follow this very simple rule. Don't flame me for any reason. With that said, we'll get on with the guide. Intro: About the Game, About Me About the Game I imagine many of you who read this will already be familiar with the workings of this game, but for the benefit of those who are not, I hope that veterans to this game will permit me to give a brief overview, and allow their attention to...shall we say...drift downwards past this section. Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest is, to my knowledge, the only RPG that was released in the United States before appearing in Japan. As vets to the video game world will know, much of our gaming originated in Japan. This game, however, is the only RPG I know of to be released here before appearing overseas. After it was released, Japanese gamers became very interested in the game and wanted a chance to play it. Thus, it was released in Japan as Final Fantasy USA, and it was almost, if not more popular, over there than here. As to what this game is, it is an RPG for newbies, to put it bluntly. The controls are extremely easy to learn and there's little challenge in it, unless you count finding your way, which can be tough sometimes. For the most part, bosses in this game are very easy unless you don't know what you're doing. In short, this is a game that newbies to the RPG genre should start with. The music is also excellent, despite not being composed by the genius of the Final Fantasy games, one Nobuo Uematsu. Most of it has a kind of rock feel to it, as the battle themes all have the SNES equivalent of electric guitars being played by people who know what they're doing when they pick up a guitar. About Me Just for the hell of it, I'm giving a little background about myself. I'm twenty-one (going on twenty-two). My interests apart from playing video games, writing and reading reviews and FAQs and stuff, include eating pizza, surfing the internet for music and playing with my cat. I'm also taking guitar lessons, as music is another interest of mine. As to what types of music, I prefer alternative rock and Irish folk. I like the Irish stuff for two reasons. First, I love accents. My favorites are the British, Australian, Scottish and Irish accents. Second, I like songs about drinking, even if I personally don't drink. I find it a bit overrated. So there you have it. I'm just your average dude with rather a lot of time on his hands. Now, with the intro out of the way, let's move onto some more game-related stuff. Controls These are very easy to learn. A: Confirms selections, opens chests, talks to people and uses whatever weapon you're equipped with. Note: You can't use weapons on the world map, just inside towns, dungeons or forests. B: Jumps (only when not on the field map), cancels selections. D-Pad: Moves character or Cursor. Select: No Purpose Start: Brings up the menu. X: Also brings up the menu. Y: Switches your ally between automatic and manual control. R and L: Both are used to switch the hero's weapon (he'll have four different ones by the end of the game). R moves forward through the list and L moves back. Game Story For centuries, the Focus Tower has been the resting place of the crystals of the elements. It was also the place at wich the many peoples of the world met for trade. One day, four monsters managed to break into the Focus Tower and steal the crystals. They began to drain the crystals of their light, which resulted in absolute chaos. Little did the world know that Benjamin,a young shepherd, would soon be called upon to bring peace back to the world. Hardly an original story, but when you take a look at games like Hydlide (sorry to any fans of that game), you begin to appreciate this game's story. Characters Here, I'll talk a bit about the characters. Benjamin: Benjamin is the hero of our story. His hometown is unknown. He can use all forms of weapons except Ninja Stars. Kaeli: This girl joins you once at the beginning of the game and once close to the end. She has an axe the first time and I believe Ninja Stars the second time. She can talk to trees. Tristam: Tristam is a wisecracking thieff who helps you so he can get a treasure. Phoebe: She joins you a few times. First she joins you in the second area and she is with you at the end of the game. Reuben: Reuben is from the town of Fireberg. He originally joins you in search of his father but decides to help you save the Fire Crystal. Hints and Tips This is, as I said above, a very easy game to learn. You find all your armor, weapons and magics and a lot of items, though you can buy items from townspeople. You do not need to equip weapons you find, as the game does so automatically. The same goes with magic. To enter an area, simply go up to it and press A or B when on the world map. You can see your enemies on the dungeon map before you fight them, so in some cases you can avoid them, although no enemy is incredibly tough, not even at later stages. If you see a switch (very rare), select your axe to hit it. If you can't find the next room in a dungeon, try bombing some walls when you get the Explosives. Having trouble against a boss? Levels might be a problem, or strategy might be the problem. If your level is too low, go find some normal enemies that won't kick your ass (the battlefields are great for leveling up), and fight them for EXP. If that's not the issue, try a different strategy. There are two types of chests in this game. The brown ones contain items that are very easy to come by, but get as many as you can, as they're always useful. Red chests contain important, one-of-a-kind items that you must acquire in order to finish the game. Note that there is a slightly different sound when you open these types of chests. When you die in a battle, you can restart the battle or give up. Start the battle only if you really want to. Giving up takes you back to the loading screen. Want to level up and possibly find some cool items? Well, on the world map there are some battlefields. These have ten groups of enemies each. Mostly you'll just get a lot of gold and EXP, but occasionally you'll find some items, one of which is necessary to complete the game. Fighting the undead? Try curing them. Most die in one use. Walkthrough Part 1: Crystal of Earth Hill of Destiny Party's Level: 1 Items: none Name your hero whatever you want. The instruction book calls him Benjamin, but the game doesn't give him a default name. When that's done, you'll see a cutscene as the hill where Benjamin is sitting begins to sink. An old man will meet him and tell him to jump, so do so. You'll escape and the hill sinks. After that, the man will begin to tell you of the prophecy, but a monster attacks. The Behemoth is very easy. Just attack him and don't worry if you die. You can start the fight again. After the battle, the man tells you about the Focus Tower and the crystals, and about how you were chosen to save the world. When he leaves, enter the Level Forest. Level Forest Party's Level: 1 Items: 3 Cure Potions, Tree Wither All you have to do here is push a boulder out of the way of a man. When he asks you, simply jump over him to push the rock. He'll thank you and give you a Tree Wither, which you should take to Kaeli in Foresta. Town of Foresta Items: Cure PotionX6, Cure Spell If you talk to the guy you helped in the forest, he'll tell you to take the chest in back of his house. You'll have to cross the stepping stones in the water to do it, but the item is necessary, as it is the Cure spell, which you will immediately learn. You can't get the potions yet though. Go into Kaeli's house and talk to her. Her mother will get mad, but Kaeli tells her that she'll be all right. Now it's time to head to the Level Forest again and see about the mystery of the strange trees. Level Forest Party's Level: 1-3 Items: Cure PotionX6, Heal PotionX3 Remember the trees you couldn't pass? Well, now you can. Kaeli will remove them. Walk around and fight monsters. Try to get up to level 3. The boss fight will be easier if you do. Once you've done so, go and face the boss. Kaeli will chop down a tree and be poisoned by a monster. Boss Battle: Minotaur HP: 200-300 Recommended Level: 3 Your first boss fight! Aren't you psyched? The music's great, too! Just have Hero attack. I personally like to put Kaeli on Automatic control. Unlike most RPG's, she doesn't seem to act stupid. If the Hero falls in battle and Kaeli is on Auto, she'll revive you. Just attack normally and heal as needed and you will win. Psycho Penguin's FAQ says you can use a Life spell on the minotaur to inflict damage. This is a bit of an understatement. One life spell will finish off this boss if you choose to end this battle that way. After the battle, Kaeli will return to Foresta, but she gives you her axe. Use it to chop down the tree and leave. Now there are a few choices. If you want you can go fight in the battlefields to gain experience (always a good idea), or you can proceed to the Sand Temple. Sand Temple Items: None Enter and open the chest to get...nothing! Don't worry. Tristam's got the elixir and will give it to you...if you help him. There's a treasure in the bone dungeon. If Tristam gets his treasure you get your elixir. If you decided to wait and fight in the battlefields after getting Tristam, then go ahead. Otherwise proceed. Bone Dungeon Recommended Level: 4-5 Items: 60 Shurakin, 6 Cure Potions, 20 Bombs, 3 Seeds, Quake Spell, Sand Coin This area's not that complicated, just make sure you collect ALL the items before advancing to the boss. Tristam will sell you some explosives at one point, and you'll need them here. Save often so you can restart here if you die. When you've got everything, advance to fight the boss. Boss Battle: Flamerus Rex HP: 2000+ Flamerus has some nasty attacks, so be careful. If you don't know what you're doing he can be a bitch! Have Tristam attack normally and have Hero use Quake or Cure, both inflict damage. When he turns into a pile of bones it means you've almost got him. Be careful though, he has a nasty attack he likes to pull off once he's almost dead, so cure yourselves when necessary. Keep on him and he'll die. After the battle the Crystal of Earth will be revived. What? So soon into the game? Usually there's hell to go through before reviving even the Crystal of Funk! Not that there's ever been a Crystal of Funk in any FF game, but you get my drift, right? Usually there's like sixty-million things to do before you can even enter the place where the first crystal is. Anyway, Tristam will give you the Elixir (at least he kept his word), and leave. Grab the Sand Coin and leave yourself. Take the Elixir back to Foresta for Kaeli. In Foresta, Kaeli will tell you to go find a girl named Phoebe in Aquaria, which is beyond the Focus Tower. Focus Tower Level: 11+ Search the tower carefully, as you'll find your next magic here. There are no enemies, so you don't have to worry about that. When you work your way through you'll be ready for Aquaria! Part 2: Crystal of Water LibraTemple Recommended Level: 8 Items: 10 bombs Here' you'll meet Phoebe, who'll join you. There are some bombs here, so grab 'em. Now head East to Aquaria, which is frozen. Skip the battlefields for now unless you want more experience. Aquaria Recommended Level: 7-9 Items: 3 Heal Potions Aquaria's frozen over, and you'll notice a slight variation in the music. The theme itself is the same, but it's played with different instruments. Anyway, you may want to buy some bombs, so do that if you need more. You definitely want to buy the steel helm in one of the houses here. Enter Phoebe's house (I think it's near the Inn), and she'll say that you need the Libra Crest to use on the symbol you found in the Libra Temple. The Crest is in the Wintry Cave, so let's head there. Wintry Cave Level: 11+ Items:BombX10, Heal PotionX6, Cure PotionX9, Refresher PotionX3, ArrowX40 This area is a little confusing. Just work your way through it as best you can. Though there aren't any necessary items, all will come in handy, particularly the Refreshers, which recover stats. Oh, and at one point Phoebe will give you a Cat Claw after you fall down. Now you can climb ledges, so you'll need to do a lot of that here. At the end is a boss who isn't that tough. Boss Battle: Squidite and SparnaX2 HP: Squidite 2000+ Sparna ?? Have Phoebe take out the Sparnas with her bow. If either of you has Thunder magic, use it on Squidite once the Sparnas are gone. He should die after a while. If your HP get low, remember to heal. After the battle, get the Libra Crest and get outa here. It's time to head to Libra Temple At this point you should be at least level 14. Stand on the symbol in Libra Temple to be transported to the Wintry Temple. Wintry Temple Items: Wakewater Here, you'll receive the Wakewater, which you hope will defrost the town. So let's head back there. Aquaria Revisited Items: None Upon entering, Phoebe will automatically use the last remaining Wakewater on the town. It wakes only one fern. Seems this's gonna take more. We gotta go to the Ice Pyramid, which is beyond the Falls Basin. If you haven't cleared out the battlefields by now, do it. Falls Basin Level: 15+ Items: Heal Spell, BombX10 I will say right now, I find this area to be quite annoying. Maybe it's the music. Anyway, you'll have to move blocks around to proceed. I don't remember the exact workings of the puzzle, so you'll have to figure it out. In any event, you'll eventually come to a boss. Boss Battle: Snow Crab HP: 2000-3000 This battle isn't that tough. Take out the other enemies, then cast Fire or Thunder on the Crab. He should die in a few rounds. Don't forget to heal if necessary. After the battle, get the Heal Spell and Phoebe'll teach you to use Jumbo Bombs. Now it's time to head for the Ice Pyramid. Ice Pyramid Level: 15+ From now on I probably won't list the items in each area. If there's an item you need I'll mention it in the area's walkthrough. It gets kinda hard to keep track of everything. Anyway, the statues' eyes are switches. Hit them with your sword to make things happen. Oh, and you'll want to find the Magic Mirror, or the enemies here won't be visible to you and it'll be like random battles. You'll meet an image of the Ice Golem here, but it's just that, an image. Keep going and you'll meet the boss. Oh, and you'll want the Noble Armor from this place too. Boss Battle: Ice Golem HP: 6000+ Have Phoebe use Fire and have Hero attack or heal as needed. When he starts to melt it means you're winning. Keep on him and you'll destroy him. After the battle, you've freed the Water Crystal! Get the River Coin, you'll need it soon! Phoebe will leave you here (go figure), but you should be able to find your way out on your own. Head back to Aquaria, which is defrosted. Aquaria Level: 16+ If you didn't get the Steel Helm, do it now. Buy Cure Potions from the Inn if you want, then climb into the lake and go behind Phoebe's house. You'll find Spenser's Place. Spenser's Place Spenser's at the bottom of this area. Talk to him to learn about Fireberg and the earthquakes it's been experiencing. He also mentions a guy named Captain Mac and ahidden shield. Then he'll give you the Venus Key. So now guess what? Head for the Focus Tower! Part 3: Crystal of Fire Focus Tower Level: 17+ On the second floor, bomb the door and open the chest with your Venus key. You'll receive the Venus Shield (maybe the hidden shield Spenser told us about?) You'll also want to get the Blizard Spell. When you're done, leave through the door with your River Coin and prepare to go to Fireberg. Fireberg Level: 17+ This is a funky variation on the town music. Anyway, explore the town to meet Reuben, who'll join you in search of his father. There's a locked house near here, so go back to the bar to find...Tristam? Yep. He'll give you the Multi Key. Unlock the house you saw earlier and enter. You'll learn about the mine and how to use Mega Grenades. Now, let's leave town. Oh, and if you talk to the band dudes in the bar they'll start playing a really groovy song. Cleanup crew Ok? Well, we're gonna clean out them there battlefields. One of 'em has an Exit Spell for us, while another one'll yield a Thunder Spell. The last thing of importance is the Gemini Crest, but clear out all the battlefields for the experience. Now it's time to head to the mines. Mine Level: 19-20 Work your way down, collecting all the items you can (especially the Charm Claw, which you need). You'll need to use the elevators. Eventually you'll get to a boss. Boss Battle: Jinn HP: 6000+ First thing's first. Kill his cronies. They're not too strong, but they can get in your way. Once they're out of the way, concentrate on Jinn. If you need major healing, Reuben's Life magic will do the job (yes it heals living party members). Thunder is the way to go here. Eventually, Jinn will die. After the battle, continue on to save Arion, Reuben's father. Now head back to Fireberg. Sealed Temple Level: 20+ Use the Gemini tile to talk with the oldster. That's it. Now leave. Fireberg Revisited Level: 20+ Return to Reuben's house and talk to Arion. It took me quite a while to see him, but he's in bed. He will inform you that the Fire Crystal is in the Lava Dome, so that's the next goal. Head out of town and prepare to save the third crystal! Volcano Level: 20+ First, enjoy the groovy music! Then, grab the White Spell from the chest. Also make sure you grab the Mask, or you won't be able to see the enemies. Continue on and you'll meet a boss. What? So soon? Boss Battle: Medusa HP: 2000+ (weak compared to prior bosses, eh? First thing's first. Take out her cronies, then take her down. She has no weaknesses...except of course for your newly-acquired White magic. Just hope you remembered to stock up on seeds and stuff beforehand. After the battle, continue on to enter the Lava Dome. In here, make sure you find the Life Spell and Moon Helm. Work your way through the dome to find the boss. Boss Battle: Dualhead Hydra HP: a whopping 14-15000! White is the key to victory here, but be careful. This guy's got some nasty attacks, so you'll want to heal. If the Hero runs low on MP, have Reuben restore it with Seeds. Keep using White and the Hydra will fall. After the battle, you have saved the Fire Crystal! Three down, one to go! Watch the scene, get the Sun coin and get outta here! Reuben will mention that there's a crystal in Windia, which is Southeast of the Focus Tower. Guess what? That's the next destination. Part 4: Crystal of the Wind Doom Castle Level: 26+ After opening the Sun Door on the first floor of the Focus Tower, you'll briefly find yourself in the Doom Castle. Just grab the Aero spell and leave. Rope Bridge In this scene, Reuben falls off the bridge, but Tristam rejoins. He's not that great. Leave for the next area. Alive Forest Level: 26+ Work your way through to the center of the forest, where you'll find the head tree. He won't be too enthusiastic about seeing you, but Tristam thinks that if Kaeli were here they might have better luck. She's in Aquaria, so go back and get her. Then come back here. Kaeli is much stronger now than she was before. Before Kaeli joins you in Aquaria however, Phoebe will tell you to go see Spenser. Tristam chooses that moment to leave, but he gives you a dragon claw (how nice). Now head back to the Alive Forest with Kaeli. Talk to the giant tree and it will open its mouth. Go in (charming, huh?) Work your way up and you'll eventually find Gidrah, the boss. Boss Battle: Gidrah HP: 13000-14000 Gidrah's weaknesses are Aero and Meteor, so use 'em both for a quick win. Heal if you have to, but you shouldn't. After the battle, talk to the closed door. The tree will carry you to Windia. When he stops, use Exit. Kaidge Temple Level: 28+ Talk to the oldster and grab a few potions. Leave and clear out some battlefields if you want, then head to Windia. Windia You'll notice the wind right away. There's a lady who'll give you a Cupid Locket, so get it. Talk to Otto to learn his daughter is in Mount Gale. Go get her. First though, head to Windhole Temple to grab a few potions...that's it. Mount Gale Level: 30+ Work your way to the top to face off against Dullahan. At first, Benjamin mistakes him for the one who's draining the crystal's power. Dullahan tells you that that's Pazuzu's doing, but that you'll never meet him. Boss: Dullahan First use Aero to kill of the Vampires, then use Meteor, Aero or Cure to take out Dullahan. He has some strong attacks, so watch yourself and don't forget to heal. After the battle, return to Windia. You'll notice that the wind has died down quite a bit. Buy some seeds from the old woman in the Inn, then talk to Otto, who starts up the Rainbow Road and tells you about elevator switches. Go to Pazuzu's Tower. Pazuzu's Tower Level: 34+ The music here has got to be the best in the game aside from the Doom Castle and the final battle. Anyway, just work your way through the tower, playing catch me if you can with Pazuzu every now and then. When you reach him for real (you'll have to manipulate some switches), get ready for the toughest fight yet. Boss Battle: Pazuzu HP: 25000+ Flare and Aero are the way to go, but be careful. Pazuzu has a Psychshield ability that will counter any magic thrown at him with a powerful wind attack. This shield lasts for four, sometimes five turns. Pazuzu doesn't even do anything while he's got the shield up, so that's the optimum time to heal if you need to. Otherwise, just attack normally. After the battle, you've freed the final crystal! Grab the Sky Coin (what? It's not over?) Leave the tower. Windia Revisited Talk to Otto and he'll tell you to get the Thunder Rock from Fireberg, so go there. Arion has the Thunder Rock, and he's in Reuben's house. Talk to him to get the rock. Then return to Windia. Otto will use the Thunder Rock to open the way to Spenser's Place, so Go there. In Spenser's Place, Reuben will blow up the lake. Now head back to Windia (boy, I'm starting to feel like some sort of errand boy). In Windia, talk to Kaeli, who's in Otto's house. She'll give you the Captain Cap. Climb into the lake, then back up. Throw a bomb at the door and go through to the Gemini Crest symbol. You'll warp into a cave. Walk out of the cave and grab the Mobius Crest. Head back to Windia...again! In Windia, enter the Northeast house and go downstairs. There's a crest symbol. Step on it to be warped to the Ship Dock. Your level should be about 34 now. Ship Dock Here, you'll find Mack's ship, so press A to board. Work your way through it and you'll find Gaia Armor. Talk to Mack, who tells you that your quest is not yet over. Though the crystals are saved, the Dark King still remains. He must be destroyed in order for piece to be restored. Go to Windia one final time. At the Windia Inn, Phoebe will be waiting. She sends Reuben off to rest and joins you. Talk to Captain Mack and you'll learn where the Dark King is. He's in the Doom Castle. Use Mack's ship to go there. Doom Castle Level: 36 This area's not that hard. There are a fair number of bosses. Skullrus Rex, the first one, is very easy. Hit him with Flare and White to put him away. The next boss, Stone Golem, can be taken out with White. The Twinhead Wyvern can be taken out with Meteor and White. Zuh is much like Pazuzu in that he has a Psychshield. Take him out the way you took out Pazuzu. At one point you'll be blessed by the crystals. Then it's time to fight the Dark King! Final Battle: Dark King HP: 40000+ The music in this battle has got to be the absolute best in the game aside from the ending. There are two ways to win this battle. The first is to have Hero use Flare while Phoebe constantly uses White. The King will change form a few times. When he becomes a spider, have Hero continue to use Flare, but have Phoebe use Cure to keep you both alive. When the King becomes an octapus, just have Phoebe keep curing while Hero attacks with Flare. The King will be gone soon. The other way to win is to have the Hero cure the Dark King every round. It causes over 15000 damage. Phoebe should use White. It will take at most two or three rounds if you do it the easy way. It'll be longer if you do it the normal way. Ending: After the Dark King is destroyed, the old man who appeared to you at various points will reveal that he was the Crystal of Light. Then it will show the friends at various settings, Fireberg, Aquaria and such. Then Benjamin and Tristam set off on Captain Mack's ship in search of a new adventure! Then the credits roll. Items Here, I'll list what each item is and what it does. Cure: Restores about a quarter of your HP Heal: Cures any status alements Refresher: recovers characters' statistics when they are lowered in battle. Seed: Restores all MP Spells Here's a list of all the magic in the game. White Magic Cure: Restores HP. Can affect multiple targets. Exit: Allows you to escape dungeons.
