FOREWORDS: This is a guide for SNES Energy Breaker. There is no walkthrough and strategy guide to all battles as I find writing those very time consuming, the story is quite long and there are 70+ battles. STATUS- Arrange party according to: Partner, Level, Life-points, Recovery, Balance point. Use L/R triggers to change how the statistics is shown. See Status window for details of status. ITEMS- Use direction key and A button to select item. Press A button again to use, equip or change location with another item. Use L/R trigger to change characters (you can exchange item between characters this way). Use select button examine the item. Use X button to place item in trash. ENERGY- Use L/R trigger to change characters. View battle skills- Use direction key and A button to select skill. Press A button again to set energy according to skill selected, or change location with another skill. Use select button examine the skill. Elements- Use left/right key to select the element. Use up/down key to increase/decrease the amount of power. Press Y button to switch to positive/negative side. Press A button twice to confirm the change. Reset- Sets all power in all elements to 0. Arrange- Arranges the skills learned. IMPORTANT ITEMS: Same control as Items. OTHERS: Arrange- Arranges all items in party. Skill library- A reference place for all Skill books read. Trash- Allow you to look at what you have thrown away. Items here can be sold at item shop, but you cannot restore items trashed back into inventory. ------------------ 1.3 STATUS WINDOW: ------------------ Lv(level)- current level the character is at. Exp(experience)- will raise a level when reach 100. Gained from using skills and items. LP(life points)- character will be knocked out in battle when reached 0. PP(power points)- amount of power available for distributing among the element energy. Bal(balance)- number of moves a character can use in a battle turn. Current Bal will drop as current LP falls. Str(strength)- determine the damage of attacks Con(Constitution)- determine damage reduced. Dex(dexterity)- determine damage additional/reduced. Luk(Luck)- determine the chance of critical attacks. Atp(total attack)- base Str adds with bonus from weapons. Def(total defence)- base Con adds with bonus from armors. *Not shown, Mv(movement)- number of squares the character can move using move command. Default is 5. Can be changed by equiping certain item. --------------------------------- 1.4 OPTION SCREEN(left to right): --------------------------------- Brought up by pressing start button on field or during battle. On/Offs- Top-down Face, Music, Sound Effect, Animation, Scroll speed, Speech Window color. Key config- Memory- Use L/R trigger to change memory slots. Left to right Copy, Save, Delete, Initialise memory. Sound- Use left/right key to chose the music or sound. Use up/down key to raise/lower sound volume. Use L/R trigger to change audio output to monoral, stero, wide. Use select button to switch between music and sound select. ----------------------- 1.5 BATTLE MENU SCREEN: ----------------------- Brought up by pressing X button during battle. Status- Same as in field menu screen. Turn end- Winning conditions- Skill library- Same as in field menu screen. Escape- This only apply for repeated random encounter. Ends the battle immediately. ----------------------- 1.6 BATTLE UNIT OPTION: ----------------------- During battle, by selecting any friendly unit. Use up/down key to switch among friendly units. L/R triggers to turn character. Items (cost 1pp)- Same as in Menu screen. Skills (cost pp according to skill used)- Select the skills to be used. Move (cost 5pp)- Unit moves according to number of movement points(normally 5 squares). Energy (cost 3pp)- Same as in Menu screen. ========== 2. SYSTEMS ========== ------------------- 2.1 BATTLE SYSTEMS: ------------------- One of the main aspects of the SLG RPG game. There is no notice on where the next battle will be and escape is not allowed in new battles. !!!Always save, so that you can reset and get necessary items, equipments or training if a battle turns out to be too hard. The winning conditions will be given before battle start. All battles have a turn limit given and in most case passing turn limit means instant gameover. Other winning conditions include lasting certain number of turns, getting to certain points. In a turn, the number and type of moves an unit can make is determined by Balance of the unit. Maira and Leon's balance is 12, Runald is 11, Star is 12, Drocy is 13. !!!Current balance will drop as current LP falls. This appies to enemies as well. You can stop an enemy from attacking by seriously injuring it, not necessary to kill it. The unit can recover Bal through healing. MOVING- A character can move by default 5 squares per move command, move command costs 5 Bal. Climbing steps cost additional squares. Flying unit (ex. Gulliver) ignores steps and blocking enemies. USING ITEMS- Using item cost surprisingly low 1 Bal. You can save lots of Bal through use of items. Using skills healing cost 4 Bal, power-up cost 7 Bal etc. The drawbacks are limited inventory space, item cost money and some items are limited in numbers. USING SKILLS- Characters can use learned skills by having enough Bal. All characters have their unique sets of skills. Skills are learned by having enough power distributed to activate it and reaching certain levels. Example: 1. For Maira, distribute 4 power to positive blue element (Gain level to increase pp and element limit). 2. In the next battle, use any skill a few times, a message will appear randomly telling the character has learned new skill (in this case is LB, a healing skill). There are 21 skill books teaching the power distribution to activate certain skills. There are skills that are not taught by books. Some skills require character to attain certain levels as well, so if the energy distribution is correct but the skill still cannot be learned, gain a few levels before retrying. The only exception is Star. He can only learn new skill by defeating certain enemies. REDISTRIBUTING POWER- The character can redistribute power to element through Energy command at cost of 3 Bal. This is more or less a useless command wasting precious Bal. -------------- 2.2 ATTACKING: -------------- Attack from front next to the enemy will cause normal damage and the enemy will retaliate. Attacking from side will cause normal damage and enemy will not retaliate. Attacking from rear will cause double additional damage and enemy will not retaliate. Enemy will never retaliate if the attack is from far away (more than a square away from enemy). For offence, character's Atp and enemy's Def determines the base damage. Total Dex difference determine additional damage or damage reduced. Same applies to enemy's attack. ----------------- 2.3 CONVERSATION: ----------------- Conversation with certain people will open up Conversation window. The commands from left to right are: ATTITUDE- Top-down Normal, Strong and forceful, Weak, Gifts. Attitude represents mood of Maira and only useful in rare occasions. Gifts is the more used command. Maira will pass items to the person. If it is not what the person wants, the item will be returned to Maira, so no need to worry about lossing item during trial and error. TALK- Talk to the person. TOPICS- Allow Maira to talk about certain topics with the person to gain information or open up new areas. Topic varies among person talked to. ------------------------- 2.4 BUYING SELLING ITEMS: ------------------------- Same old system of buying, selling and trade-in. The only addition is selling of trash. Inventory space (also trash space) is limited. Anything useless can be trashed and brought to shop for selling. The shop owner will bring in different items or increase item's stock as the story progresses. ======== 3. COMMENTS =========== I got this game a year or 2 ago, but did not really have the time to play it. Only recently, with 2 months holiday and an urge to clear as many SNES games (as well as PS) before continuing to another phase of my life, I bring it out of storage and spend 35 hours completing it. Using SNES standards, Energy Breaker is a great RPG SLG game. -Great graphics. -Great music. -Whole adventure takes place in 2D isometric environment. Many different places to explore. Well designed stages. -Control is easy to pick up and game system is simple for those who play RPG and SLG games. -70+ battles with objectives like defeating all enemies, taking out one boss, getting to certain point and lasting a number of turns. Battle scale is small with few units participating. -No warning to when next battle will occur can be annoying, battle near the end can be tough without preparation. -Story may be a little hard to grasp but interesting enough. It is worthy to get this game to try out the game system. The game allows replay with loads of cash and infinite stock of items sold in shop.
