According to legend, a brave warrior, Erdrick, brought light back to the land by defeating an evil being. He used the Ball of Light bequeathed to him by a friend to drive off the enemies of Alefgard. He then gave the Ball of Light to King Lorik, who unified Alefgard. The land was at peace for many generations. In the time of King Lorik XVI, the Ball of Light were stolen from Tantegel Castle by the evil Dragonlord, and once again the Kingdom of Alefgard was plunged into darkness. Many travelers fell prey to the merciless fangs of monsters, and the beautiful was transformed into poisonous swamps that hindered travelers. It was also rumored that several Towns and Villages were destroyed; wiped off the face of the land by Ghosts & Dragons. Many brave warriors tried to recover the Ball of Light, but none of them returned from Charlock, the Dragonlord's dark castle. The people longed for peace, but did not give up hope. The great Seer Mahetta predicted that "One day, a descendent of the valiant Edrick shall come forth to defeat the Dragonlord." Who is this brave soul? There is only one possible answer. You. This is the start of your adventure. {End instruction booklet intro!}--------------------------------------- Hello, and welcome to the Complete Guide for Dragon Warrior. I am your RPG expert host and game-companion, Colin Moriarty. Dragon Warrior was initially made for the Famicom System in Japan by Enix in 1986 and was released there in 1987, and dubbed the name Dragon Quest. The game was translated from Japanese into a host of other languages (English obviously included), and was released in the Americas and Europe in 1989 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, the NES, and called Dragon Warrior. Dragon Warrior is the first true RPG to see light on the NES, and is the game many people proudly think back upon as a game that occupied them for hours upon hours, and many people play them proudly today, whether on their home console or on computer-based Emulators and ROMs. True RPGamers, or the old-school gamers that have been playing the genre for as long as I have, and videogame enthusiasts, who see far beyond graphical interface, but look deeper into a videogame, can appreciate this game. It's really not only this game in particular that fascinates gamers world wide, but the entire series of Dragon Warrior/Quest games available. There are seven of them over three platforms, and only four have been released in the Americas. After this game, three more Dragon Warriors/Quests were released for the NES/Famicom, II, III, and IV. Each of them got more and more deep and intuitive as the series went on. And what makes the series of concrete is that it knows that some things need to be carried over from game to game (such as some items and monsters), and some need to be dropped to make the game an exciting experience, which is the greatest thing about the series; it's familiar nature. Dragon Quest V, VI and VII were released in Japan (V and VI for the Super Famicom [the Super Nintendo Entertainment System {SNES} counterpart in Japan] and VII was released on the Sony Playstation). While VII stands a chance to be released yet in America, the only Dragon Warriors that American audiences have seen since Dragon Warrior IV on the NES is Dragon Warrior - Terry's Adventures and Dragon Warrior I & II, both on the Game Boy Color. What many gamers fail to realize, whether seasoned or not, is that the Dragon Quest series in Japan is THE premier series in Japan. It's not over-shadowed in Japan by Final Fantasy and Square like it is here, it's actually the exact opposite there. My goal with this guide is to make the gamers worldwide appreciate a good game on a classic system, with the best guide on the Internet (this one) to help them along. I hope you enjoy my guide, but more than anything, I hope you enjoy the game itself. Enjoy. *********************************************************************** Section IV - Controls ------- -- -------- Before I explain how to use the controls of the game, I figure the best thing to teach it is a visual aid. Although the game isn't ridiculously hard at all, it would be easier than anything for you to figure out the controls by simply looking at an ASCII replica of an NES controller. Below the replica is an explanation of what each button does in the game, from left to right. _________________________________ | | | _ Nintendo | | _| |_ | [D-Pad] -------->||_ 0 _| SELECT START A B | | |_| [ ] [ ] o o | | o o o o | |________________________o____o___| *D-Pad* - The D-Pad (or Directional Pad) allows you to make your character move in any direction that you want it to. It also allows you to scroll the various menus in the game. *Select* - The Select button has no function in this game. *Start* - The Start button is used to pause the game and select some things from menus, especially that of the beginning, before starting the actual game itself. *A* - The A button is truly the primary button in the game. Through this button, commands are selected and instructions are carried out. The basic all around button. Brings up menus, used to select commands and options on the menu. *B* - The "cancel" button. If you bring up the menu and you don't want it up, you simply hit the B button to make it go away. Not used for anything else, really. *********************************************************************** Section V - The Menus (Game Start, Walk-Around, Battle, and Auto-Menu) ------- - --- ----- ---- ----- ---- ------ --- ------ There are four main menus in the game that I will go over with you here so that when you decide to begin the game, you'll know what you're doing! =) MENU #1 - The "Game Start" Menu The "Game Start" Menu is what I lovingly call the first few menus that appear as you turn on the game, and either select to begin a new quest or continue your quest. Right when you turn on the game, DRAGON WARRIOR appears on the screen, along with "Enix 1986, 1989" et cetera. And then it says -PUSH START- Do so. From there, if you don't have a game saved on your battery pack in the game, it'll say "Begin A New Quest", and when you select that, it'll bring you to a mini-screen that'll make you chose which part of the battery save you'd like to use. Select one of the three (there'll be three, two, one, or even none, depending on how many saves are present on the cartridge). "Adventure Log 1" (or 2 or 3) select. From here it's time to choose a name. Use the directional pad and the A button to select the letters you want and the B button to go back if you make a mistake. When you're done, go down to "End" in the lower right- hand corner and press A. It'll then ask you "Which message speed do you want to use." I prefer "Fast" although many people prefer "Normal." DO NOT use "Slow"... it's WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too slow. =) And from there you're brought in front of the King, ready to start the game. If you already have saves on your battery, however, the menu'll look more like this: CONTINUE A QUEST CHANGE MESSAGE SPEED BEGIN A NEW QUEST COPY A QUEST ERASE A QUEST a.) Continue a Quest - Select "Continue a Quest" if there is a game saved on your cartridge already that you'd like to play. Press the A button on "Continue a Quest" and then a mini-screen'll come up that'll have the games saved on the cartridge that you can resume from. Chose your game with the A button and from there, you'll be brought to where ever the last place is you saved from. b.) Change Message Speed - If you have a game saved on the cartridge and you don't like the message speed, choose this option with the A button. It'll then bring up the game(s) saved on the battery you want to change the message configuration around of. Once you chose that with A, it'll ask you "Which message speed do you want to use." Choose one of the three options with A and then you'll be transported back to the five- option screen. c.) Begin A New Quest - If you want to begin a new quest, choose this option. (see above for how to make a new game!) d.) Copy a Quest - If you want to copy a quest already saved on your cartridge to another slot on the battery, chose this option. Chose it with A, and then it'll bring up the saves on the battery. Press A on whatever save you want to copy and then it'll bring up any available slots for you to copy it to. From there, press A to copy the game. e.) Erase a Quest - To erase your quest, choose this option with the A button. Then pick the game save you want to erase with the A button. From there, it'll bring up two menus. One will say "[Character's Name] Level [_] Do you want to erase this character?" and the other menu'll say "Yes" and "No". Choose one with the A button. MENU #2 - The "Walk-Around" Menu The second menu I call the "Walk-Around" Menu and is the menu you'll be using most often in your journey. Anytime you're not in battle or in conversation, press A to bring this menu up. From here you have eight options to chose from. The menu looks sort of like this. _______COMMAND_______ |TALK SPELL| |STATUS ITEM| |STAIRS DOOR| |SEARCH___________TAKE| Bad, I know. =) Anyway, here's an explanation of what each one means! *Talk - The talk option is used to talk to the various townsfolk and shopkeepers you'll come across on your journey. Make sure you're facing the person and are RIGHT next to them, facing them, and then use this option. Otherwise, it'll say, "There is no one there." *Status - The status option allows you to see your character's vital stats... Name: The Name of your character. Strength: The strength of your character. Agility: Your character's ability to stay alive. Maximum HP: The maximum amount of hit points your character can have. Maximum MP: The maximum amount of magic points your character can have. Attack Power: How much damage your character can dish. Defense Power: How much damage your character can take. Weapon: The weapon your character is currently equipped with. Armor: The piece of armor your character is currently equipped with. Shield: The shield your character currently has on. *Stairs - Used to go up and down stairs. When you're standing OVER and ON TOP OF the staircase, use this option. Otherwise, it'll say, "There are no stairs here." *Search - The search command is used to search the ground for something hidden. Use it on top of the area where you think something secret might be laying. If there is nothing there, it'll say, "[Your Character] searched the ground all about. But there found nothing." *Spell - The spell command is one that is used a little later in the game when your character gets high enough in level where it can use various kinds of spells. Select the spell you'd like to use, and if you have enough MPs, then you'll use it. Otherwise, it'll say, "[Your Character] cannot yet use the spell." *Item - Use this option to see what items you have in your inventory. Be careful of how much you carry; your character can only carry a certain amount of items before you can't carry anything else. If you have no items available at the time, it'll say, "Nothing of use has yet been given to thee." *Door - This option allows you to pass through doors. (sometimes, you'll need a key). Walk directly in front of the door and then select this option to open the door. If there is no door in front of you, it'll say, "There is no door here." *Take - This is the option to use if you want to take something out of a treasure chest. Walk directly on top of the treasure chest you'd like to open and select this option to take whatever is in the treasure chest as your own. (if your inventory is full, it'll put that item back in the treasure chest until you have room for it.) If you're not on top of a treasure chest, it'll say, "There is nothing to take here." MENU #3 - The "Battle" Menu The "Battle" Menu is only used in the battle scenes that you encounter on the world map and in dungeons. The random-battle system has you use a series of menus to use attacks, et cetera. When the battle begins, a menu will pop up, looking something like this. ____COMMAND____ |FIGHT SPELL| |RUN________ITEM| Close enough, right? *Fight - Choose this option, the main option you'll use in all fights, to attack your enemy with whatever weapon you have equipped. Do keep in mind that sometimes when you attack you'll do critical damage (or above average damage) to your target, and othertimes you'll miss completely. This has a lot to do with the enemy's level, et cetera. *Run - Choose this option if you feel you're over-powered in a fight, you think you're gonna perish, or if you just don't feel like fighting. Don't use this option, so I suggest, unless absolutely necessary. You MUST level up a lot in this game to stand a chance. There's no ifs ands or buts about it. (keep in mind that enemies can flee from battle as well, and often use their own run command when THEY themselves feel over-powered in battle). *Spell - Once high enough in level, your character will start being able to utilize spells, both offensive and defensive spells, from healing spells for your character to offensive attack spells to use on your enemy. When you choose this command, another window'll come up (as long as you have spells available, otherwise it'll say, "[Your Character] cannot yet use the spell.) with your spell options. Choose one within your MP restraints and use it. Each spell uses a certain amount of Magic Points (MP), so be weary of this. *Item - Finally, the item command allows you to chose an item to use in battle, which is almost always some sort of healing herb. Most items can't be used actively in battle, so be aware of that when choosing certain items, otherwise you'll be hindered. MENU #4 - The "Auto-Menu" The Auto-Menu is a menu that comes up whenever you're playing but you're not moving or using any commands. It's basically a reminder menu, with some basic information on it. Below is an ASCII art replica. __NAME__ |LV - xx | |HP - xx | |MP - xx | |G - xxx| |E - xxx| LV [Level] - Your level in the game is represented by "LV" As you gain levels, your character gets stronger. You gain levels by getting experience points from winning battles. However, your level gaining is hindered at a point... you can only go so far... HP [Hit Points] - Your character's amount of hit points is how much more damage he can take from the enemy. MP [Magic Points] - Your character's amount of magic points is how much more magic he can use on the enemy or himself, both independently and in battle. G [Gold] - Gold is the currency in the world of Dragon Warrior. You get it from enemies after winning a battle and in treasure chests as well. Use it to by armor, weapons and items throughout your journey. E [Experience] - Your experience (or experience points) determine when you're character is going to level up. The more experience points you have the more battles you've won, as experience points signify your success in battle; you only get them after winning a battle. *********************************************************************** Section VI - The Characters ------- -- --- ---------- While there is only one playable character in the game, there are a few other characters you should know about that are listed below. *Hero* - The Hero is the playable character in the game, whom you name any name you choose. He is a mix of strong attack power and a user of magic. A well- rounded character for you to use, his quest in the game is to rescue Princess Gwaelin and return her to the King, King Lorik. Then he must have a final showdown with the Dragonlord. But not before he finds out his past connections with the great warrior Erdrick, travels the continent, and gathers the various pieces of his great ancestor's armor and weapons. *Princess Gwaelin* - Princess Gwaelin is practically the whole first half of the game, as the Dragonlord kidnaps her and you have to first rescue her before facing off with the Dragonlord himself. She's King Lorik's daughter, and the love interest of the Hero. They actually run off together at the end of the game, which has a lot to do with the story of Dragon Warrior II on the NES, if you were at all interested. =) *King Lorik* The game doesn't really show much about this guy... al you really know about him is that he runs the show in Tantegel, and that his daughter is Princess Gwaelin. You talk to him at length in the beginning and end of the game, but otherwise, your only contact with him is basically to save your game. *Dragonlord* The evil fiend bad guy of the game, the Dragonlord first kidnaps Princess Gwaelin, and then makes an attempt to take over the kingdom of Alefgard. No background on this guy either. All you know is that you have to eventually fight him in his castle at Charlock later in the game. At the end of the game, more precisely. *********************************************************************** Section VII - The Terrain ------- --- --- ------- The terrain found in the game of Dragon Warrior is similar, if not identical, to those found in the all other Dragon Warrior games on the NES. However, you must understand the different kinds of terrain to be successful in the game. Everything from encounter rates to damage given can be effected completely by the terrain you are currently working on. Below are some terrain explanations, and below those, a small table can be found, where easy-to-read charts for quick reference on terrain can be found, giving you only the most vital information for your quest. [Please keep in mind that this information can't be supported, it's approximations really. It's what I've found through playing the game. I'm sure that, although my information is accurate, there can be added or missing information on my encounter rates and damage taken. Well, you'll see what I mean, I'm sure I've confused you enough by now. =)] *Grass* Grasslands make up most of the world map, when you are wondering around outsidde in the world of Torland. The encounter rate on grasslands are low, and mostly low-grade enemies are commonly found on these pieces of land. You can travel quickest, with little interruption by enemies, by taking your cross-land routes over grass. *Heavy Grass* Similar to regular grass, optimal routes to and fro can be found on heavy grasses as well, although I found that the encounter rates are slightly higher on these dark green patches of grass. Enemies are a mix here as well. *Forests* The forest has an increased encounter rate as well as some pretty tough enemies, combined with a few normal and weak enemies as well. Forests are okay routes to go through (sometimes you can't avoid going through them at all), so going through them really isn't a major problem. Furthermore, they are always bunched together so they can easily be avoided, on the flipside of the coin. *Deserts* The deserts have similar encounter rates, I've found, to that of the forest. The monsters are a mixed bunch, usually specialized to the desert region. Deserts are sometimes easy to avoid, but the large deserts have to be gone through, so you can't really avoid them. *Hills* The hills are the most annoying land feature to traverse through. They have mostly strong enemies in them, and the encounter rate is extremely high. They also impede how fast you can travel. You don't shoot through the hills like you do other features. To get over them, you have to deal with slow travel and strong enemies, found in constant encounters. *Poison Swamps* The poison swamps have a pretty high encounter rate coupled with the fact that each step takes a certain amount (1-2 HPs) off each of your characters. It's possible to kill your entire party in a swamp, without even realizing you're taking any energy away from yourself until the screen turns orangish, and by that time it may be too late to escape your impending doom. Certain armors allow you to cross over these swamps unharmed, however. Until then, use your healing spells and items to cross over them. *Magic Floors* Magic floors are a rare kind of floor that can only be traversed over by one who wears Erdrick's Armor. Otherwise, each step will take over 20 HPs from each of your characters. They are mainly found in small bunched around the Dragon Warrior II world, guarding treasure chests and people behind them always have something interesting and important to share. Dungeons and the final castle, especially, have many magic floors. *Mountains* Mountains cannot be traversed over by any means, so you don't need to worry about them. *Dungeon/Castle/Cave Floors* The floors of dungeons, caves, and castles have moderate encounter rates and don't take any damage from your enemy. Being that entire castles, caves, and dungeons are made up of this generic floor type, they are entirely unavoidable. They are meant to basically give you, the gamer, an idea of what to expect. *********************************************************************** Section VIII - The Towns and Castles ------- ---- --- ----- --- ------- While there is a section of this guide for in-depth descriptions of each castle and town you come across later in the guide, let me simply take this section to let you know that you really ought to talk to everyone in towns, and most certainly utilize the facilities it has, including shops and inns, to your full advantage. Also realize that to save at any point during your quest, you must go back to the King and talk to him to save. See Section IX for more in-depth descriptions and explanations of each town and castle in the game, town by town, castle by castle. *********************************************************************** Section IX - The Battle System ------- -- --- ------ ------ The battle system in Dragon Warrior is the most traditional RPG battle system in any videogame; and therefore, it's called traditional. The battle style, however, is random. You randomly run into monsters that you don't see at all until the battle begins on the world map and dungeons. (commonplace in most RPGs). However, what's not common is the fact that you really do have to level up often and a lot to stay alive in the game because as you do things like cross a bridge or enter a new area of the world map or a dungeon, the enemies do noticeably get much harder, much stronger, use stronger spells, and sometimes even heal themselves, so you have to be weary of that. As seen in Section V, the battle menu, once you enter a random encounter, looks something like this. ____COMMAND____ |FIGHT SPELL| |RUN________ITEM| The explanations for each of these commands... (as seen in section V as well)... *Fight - Choose this option, the main option you'll use in all fights, to attack your enemy with whatever weapon you have equipped. Do keep in mind that sometimes when you attack you'll do critical damage (or above average damage) to your target, and othertimes you'll miss completely. Don't use this option, so I suggest, unless absolutely necessary. You MUST level up a lot in this game to stand a chance. There's no ifs ands or buts about it. (keep in mind that enemies can flee from battle as well, and often use their own run command when THEY themselves feel over-powered in battle). *Spell - Once high enough in level, your character will start being able to utilize spells, both offensive and defensive spells, from healing spells for your character to offensive attack spells to use on your enemy. When you choose this command, another window'll come up (as long as you have spells available, otherwise it'll say, "[Your Character] cannot yet use the spell.) with your spell options. Choose one within your MP restraints and use it. Each spell uses a certain amount of Magic Points (MP), so be weary of this. *Item - Finally, the item command allows you to chose an item to use in battle, which is almost always some sort of healing herb. Most items can't be used actively in battle, so be aware of that when choosing certain items, otherwise you'll be hindered. ...got all of that? Great. So as you do these various things, just remember that running for battle is always an option. Don't be afraid to run, really. Also, remember these very important words – LEVELING UP IS VITAL! If you want to survive always be at the "recommended" level shown throughout the walkthrough before each new area of the walkthrough, or even higher. You shouldn't be lower, you want to breeze through this game, not get killed right off of the bat. =) *********************************************************************** Section X – Saving and other Pre-Game Tips ------- - ------ --- ----- --- ---- ---- The walkthrough is in the next section, but before we actually get there, I think it's pretty important I give you some pre-game tips to help you out. <> WHEN IN DOUBT, SAVE! AND SAVE OFTEN! Nothing is worse then having to start the game from a place you were hours ago because you got killed by some enemies. You have to save, and you have to save OFTEN. You can save with the King, and if you have the special item where you can save anywhere, use that instead. I own this game, as well as the other three Dragon Warrior games, on the NES, but since I'm on a computer, I'm actually playing the ROM of the game for this walkthrough, on a NES emulator (Famtasia), so I save using the emulator browser, by "saving my state." So I won't be mentioning AT ALL in the walkthrough to save. Just know you have to do it often. <> LEVEL UP A LOT, ALWAYS BE WAY STRONGER THAN YOUR ENEMY You can't possibly comprehend how important it is to level up in this game. It's like this in ALL Dragon Warrior games on the NES. From one area to another the enemies get much stronger, so you can be kicking the garbage out of enemies in one area, cross a bridge, and get utterly destroyed in the next area by the next area's monsters. So take the time to level up, always be WAY ahead of the enemies you're fighting at the time so that the enemies in the next area won't give you too much trouble. Either that, or pay the piper. =) <> BUY THE BEST WEAPONS AND EQUIPMENT AS SOON AS THEY BECOME AVAILABLE Trust me when I say good weapons and armor can make all the difference. If you come across a new town with new gear for your characters, run around outside of town and get enough money making sure your characters all have the optimum equipment at the soonest possible time. Plus, all of this fighting to get the money... it gets you to level up. Kill two birds with one stone; good stuff. And finally... <> HEAL OFTEN, HEAL SMART! Healing is obviously a very important part of your survival in the game. If you don't heal yourself, you're eventually going to succumb to the pressures of monsters and perish. To avoid this, use spells, herbs, and the Inn often, making sure you always have enough HP to get to and fro wherever it is you're venturing to at the time. I say "heal smart" because don't waste an Inn or a Medical Herb if you have MP to spare. That's just how it should be. The only time this shouldn't be is if conservation of MP is your game. Then you take another route. It's up to you, but heed the words of thine... heal often. And now... the walkthrough...! *********************************************************************** Section XI – *-WALKTHROUGH-* ------- -- ----------- Welcome, readers, to the main section of the guide; the walkthrough. Here's where you'll find step by step instructions on how to defeat this game quickly, efficiently, and most important – easily. Here we go! PLEASE NOTE!!! I will NOT, NOT, NOT tell you anywhere in the walkthrough to go see King Lorik to save your game. You should do it on your own whims and make sure to do it often, after going up a level, et cetera. It's VITAL, because if you die, you'll lose half of your gold pieces you had at time of death. So save often, save responsibly. =) i.) Tantagel Castle ++++++++ ++++++ SUGGESTED LEVEL – Since you won't be fighting at all, level 1. ITEMS TO FIND – Magic Key 120 Gold Torch ITEMS TO BUY - Nothing. After you input your name, you'll be first seen in the castle throne room in front of the King. Press the primary button and you'll start talking to the King. He'll tell you something at length: "Descendant of Erdrick, listen now to my words. It is told that in ages past, Erdrick fought demons with a Ball of Light. Then came the Dragonlord who stole the precious globe and hid it in the darkness. Now, [you], thou must help us recover the Ball of Light and restore peace to our land. The Dragonlord must be defeated. Take now whatever thou may find in these Treasure Chests to aid thee in thy quest. Then speak with the guards, for they have much knowledge that may aid thee. May the light shine upon thee, [you]." From here, take his advice. Open the three treasure chests around the throne room to get 120 gold, a Torch, and a Magic Key. Then talk to the three guards inside the throne room. One will tell you, "Dost thou know about Princess Gwaelin?" If you answer "yes" then the guard'll say "[You], please save the Princess." If you answer "no" then the guard'll say, "Half a year now hast passed since the princess was kidnapped by the enemy. Never does the King speak of it, but he must be suffering much. [You], please save the princess." The guard to our left by the door will tell you, "East of this castle is a town where armor, weapons, and many other items may be purchased. Return to the Inn for a rest if thou are wounded in battle, [You]. Sleep heals all." The guard to our right by the door says, "If thou hast collected all the Treasure Chests, a key will be found. Once used, the key will disappear but the door will be open and thou may pass through." Very good, Mr. Guard. =) He's right though, if you did open the Treasure Chests, and obviously you should, you should have a Magic Key in your inventory. Go up to the door and use the Door command, and the key will be used, but that door will be always open for now on. And you'll be coming back here a lot throughout your journey, it's the only place you can save your game, and you'll want to save your game often. Once through the door, go down the stairs. Here you'll be outside, in the castle of Tantagel. Right by the stairs are two guards. Speak to them, and they'll say, "King Lorik will record thy deeds in his Imperial Scroll so thou may return to thy quest later." And, "If thou are planning to take a rest, first see King Lorik." In otherwords, go see the King when you want to save your game, but before you do, you'll want to heal at the Inn or use a Heal spell. Proceed down, and talk to the blue-haired man here, who'll say, "There was a time when Brecconary was a paradise. Then the Dragonlord's minions came." Talk to the blue-haired woman and she'll say, "Where oh where can I find Princess Gwaelin?" From here, go up and left. Pass the door (you can get in there right now, although those Treasure Chests are ultra- tempting, I know) and go to the room above it. Talk to the blue-haired man here and he'll say, "To become strong enough to face future trials, thou must first battle many foes." Proceed up and right and talk to the guard here. Good advice, he'll say, "Thou must have a key to open a door." Now go back to where those two blue-haired people where, and this time, go right. Talk to the first mobile guard you come to and he'll say, "When entering the cave, take with thee a torch." Go down a bit and talk to the guard that's not moving in the little crevasse and he'll say, "Where oh where can I find Princess Gwaelin?" Same 'ol message. =) Now just go back down and talk to the old man behind the desk. He'll say, "[You]'s coming was foretold by legend. May the light shine upon this brave warrior." Why thank you, kind sir. =) That's all you can really do here now, so go down to the exit. Both guards at the entrance say, "Welcome to Tantagel Castle." Now leave the castle. As you find yourself for the first time on the world map, you'll see a town directly to your right. Go –right- to the castle, you don't have any weapons or armor equipped, even the simplest enemy like a slime will give you trouble right now. Go right to the town. This is the town of Brecconary. ii.) THE TOWN OF BRECCONARY +++ ++++ ++ ++++++++++ SUGGESTED LEVEL – Since you won't be fighting at all, level 1. ITEMS TO FIND – None ITEMS TO BUY - Club (60 Gold) Clothes (20 Gold) INN – 6 gold SHOPS - *Weapons and Armor* Bamboo Pole – 10 gold (+2) Club – 60 gold (+4) Copper Sword – 180 gold (+10) Clothes – 20 gold (+2) Leather Armor – 70 gold (+4) Small Shield – 90 gold (+4) *Tools* Medicinal Herb – 24 gold Torch – 8 gold Dragon's Scale – 20 gold Here you are now in Brecconary. Talk to the guy at the door and he'll assure you that, "Thou art most welcome in Brecconary." Why thank ye. =) Go up right away and talk to the blue-haired woman, who'll say, "Welcome! Enter the shop and speak to its keeper across the desk." Take her advice, enter the store, and talk to the green man behind the desk, he sells weapons and armor. Talk to him and purchase the Club for 60 gold and the Clothes for 20 gold. Since you don't have any other weapons or armor right now, the Club and Clothes will automatically equip themselves. Next to the store is a gray-cloaked old man walking around. Talk to him to find out that, "Watch thy Hit Points when in the Poisonous Marsh." Then go back down, across from the weapons store, and enter the inn. You don't need to heal or anything so don't speak to the Innkeeper, but talk to the guard below the keeper, and he'll tell you to, "Tell King Lorik that the search for his daughter hath failed. I am almost gone..." Since you can't go into the door in the Inn, being that you don't have a key, leave the Inn. Talk to the fat green man around the Inn and he'll ask you to, "Please save us from the minions of the Dragonlord." Will do. =) Talk to the wandering person around the center of the town, and he'll tell you to, "Go north to the seashore, then follow the coastline west until thou hath reached Garniham." Not yet, though, not strong enough yet. =) Next to the inn, talk to the woman there, and she'll say, "No, I am not Princess Gwaelin." DOH! =) Talk to the wandering red knight near the bridge and he'll say, "Many have been the warriors who have perished on this quest. But for thee, I wish success, [You]." Go over the bridge and talk to the man next to the building, and he'll tell you to, "Enter where thou can." Talk to the wandering man near the building, and he'll say, "Within sight of Tantagel Castle to the south is Charlock, the fortress of the Dragonlord." Go in the door and talk to the man behind the desk, he sells "tools" for you to buy. I wouldn't buy anything from him just yet, you don't need anything for the time being. Now go back across the bridge and go up. There are two rooms ahead and there doors are open. Talk to the Red Knight walking around the rooms first, and he'll ask you, "Art thou the descendant of Erdrick? Hast thou any proof?" Then enter the leftmost room and talk to the man there. He'll let you know that, "There is a town where magic keys can be purchased." The old man in the rightmost room will tell you, "If thou art cursed, come again." He will heal you if you are cursed for some reason. (Farther in the game you'll come across cursed items. If you equip them on you, you will be cursed and you'll have to talk to him to get uncursed.) Finally, go up to the building in the northeast corner of the town. Talk to the wandering guard there and he'll recommend that you, "See King Lorik when thy experience levels are raised." Also there for you to talk to is a Red Knight in the northeast most corner of the town, and he isn't moving. Talk to him. He'll give you an excellent warning. "Beware the bridges! Danger grows when thou crosses." In otherwords, when you cross a bridge on the world map, the enemies get stronger. A true fact indeed. Now you can leave the town, we have some fighting to do, time to raise thy levels! =) iii.) RAISE THY LEVELS!!! +++++ +++ ++++++ SUGGESTED LEVEL – Level 3 before heading north, I'd be at Level 5 before the next section. ITEMS TO FIND – None. ITEMS TO BUY - Go back to Brecconary once you accumulate the necessary amounts of money (340 Gold) to purchase... Leather Armor (70 Gold) Small Shield (90 Gold) Copper Sword (180 Gold) Here you'll basically want to just raise your levels, raise raise raise! Also, we're really fighting here to get enough money to buy the top weapons and armor available to you right now thanks to the shops at Brecconary; Leather Armor, Copper Sword, and a Small Shield. Those three items that we're gonna buy total 340 gold, so we should be busy for a while. Initially, until you reach level 3, you should fight Slimes and a few Drakees around the Tantagel Castle/Brecconary area. If you travel to far north you're gonna get your ass kicked by some pretty badass monsters. So stay around the towns until level 3. If you for any reason have enough money to buy one of the three things you're looking to purchase here, by all means go and buy it and make your journey easier. I suggest getting the defensive items first, the Copper Sword last. That way you can take more damage and save some gold by not having to go to the Inn so much. Level 3 introduces to you the first spell you can use in the game, Heal, so that will also help you to save some money (although you can only use it once on Level 3 before running out of Magic Points). So anyway, once you hit Level 3, feel free to go farther north. You'll see a cave door to your left but ignore it for now. Keep fighting; you need to keep getting more gold. Fight Slimes, Red Slimes, Drakees, and even Ghosts if you're up to it. If you run into a Magician and you're not level 4 or higher, RUN AWAY!!! Once you hit Level 4, you'll learn Hurt, and you can lay the smackdown on the Magicians now. Buy the Leather Armor for 70 gold, and the shopkeeper will buy your Clothes for 10 Gold. Also, purchase the Small Shield and purchase the Copper Sword, and the shopkeeper will buy back the Club for 30 Gold. Now you should be on level 5 at least, I personally am on level 6 at this point. You probably noticed three things while leveling up: a.) Slimes and Red Slimes are starting to run away in battle (this means you're getting very strong), b.) There is a town in the northwest corner of the continent, and c.) there is a cave around where you fought some Magicians. It's time to go to the cave. (you might want to buy another torch from the shop at Brecconary before proceeding.) iv.) ERDRICK'S CAVE +++++++ + ++++ SUGGESTED LEVEL – 6 ITEMS TO FIND – Erdrick's Tablet ITEMS TO BUY - None. Erdick's Cave should not be a challenge for you. This is the only cave/dungeon in the game with no enemies, so enjoy it while it lasts. You should be okay here with only one torch, but having a second torch can't hurt. Once you enter the cave, immediately use your torch. Heed my directions to get to the treasure chest holding Erdrick's Tablet, which has important information on it. First, go right one, and then down six. Then go left one, down two, right six, up one, right two, down three, right two, down two, and up the stairs. Now, go right one, up five, left three, down four, left two, up one, left one, up one, left three, up three, right three, up three, left three, up two, right six, down four, right three, to the treasure chest. Open it and retrieve the tablet. It reads: "I am Erdrick and thou art my descendant. Three items were needed to reach the Isle of Dragons which is south of Brecconary. I gathered these items, reached the island, and there defeated a creature of great evil. Now I have entrusted the three items to three worthy keepers. Their descendants will protect the items until thy quest leads thee to seek them out. When a new evil arises, find the three items, then fight!" From here, simply leave the cave the way you came (it's easier leaving then going), and get back to the world map. Once outside on the world map, work your way up and left to the town in the northwest corner, the town of Garinham. v.) THE TOWN OF GARINHAM +++ ++++ ++ ++++++++ SUGGESTED LEVEL – 6 ITEMS TO FIND – None. ITEMS TO BUY - Nothing for the time. INN – 25 gold SHOPS - *Weapons and Armor* Club – 60 gold (+4) Copper Sword – 180 gold (+10) Hand Axe – 560 gold (+15) Leather Armor – 70 gold (+4) Chain Mail – 300 gold (+10) Half Plate – 1,000 gold (+16) Large Shield – 800 gold (+10) *Tools* Medicinal Herb – 24 gold Torch – 8 gold Dragon's Scale – 20 gold For right now, your main business in this town is to talk to the people and heal if needed. There's nothing you can afford here right now. So let us talk to the people and do what we need to do, then we'll go out and fight some monsters and save up for some good weapons and armor. Right off the bat, go up and talk to the old man, who'll say, "Garin, a wandering minstrel of legendary fame, is said to have built this town." Talk to the guy behind the desk if you need any tools, then go down across and talk to the stationary old man there. He'll say, "Many believe that Princess Gwaelin is hidden away in a cave." (and she is, ha ha). Then go right and talk to the Red Knight, who'll ask you, "I've heard of one named Nester. Dost thou know such a one?" From here, go right and ignore the weapons shop for now. Talk to the blue-haired women here who'll wish you well, "Welcome to Garinham. May thy stay be a peaceful one." Thank you. =) The blue-haired man'll say, "It is said that the Princess was kidnapped and taken eastward." Another true statement. Now go back to the weapons shop to look at what you're now saving up for. Now you're gonna save up for a 560 gold Hand Axe as well as a 300 gold Chain Mail. Now you're strong enough to go across the bridge to the south, to save cash, that's where you're gonna go. Lets do it! vi.) LEVEL UP AND SAVE SOME GOLD!!! +++++ ++ +++ ++++ ++++ ++++ SUGGESTED LEVEL – You'll start at level 6, and should be at level 7 well on your way to level 8 by the time this is completed. ITEMS TO FIND – None. ITEMS TO BUY - Chain Mail (300 gold) Hand Axe (560 gold) To the south of Garinham is a bridge that you should cross over. Across this bridge are very powerful enemies; Magidrakees, Scorpions, and even Skeletons. However, we must save up some cash to buy the Hand Axe and Chain Mail (860 gold, actually). Don't save up all of it though. First save up the 300 gold and then go and buy the Chain Mail, then save up the additional 560 gold and buy the Hand Axe. Basically, cross the bridge and stay near it, just below the hills or in the hills. Fight only Magidrakees and Scorpions, as well as the Ghosts, Red Slimes, and Magicians you come across. If you happen to run into a Skeleton, run the HELL away! =) You'll find yourself running back and forth to Brecconary a lot. Something else you can do if you want to save the 6 gold each time you go to the Inn at Brecconary; you can go to the castle and talk to the old man in the southeast corner behind the desk. He'll say something to you, but after you talk to him, your MP will be maxed out. Use this instead of the Inn, it'll help. Then just use the Heal spell and talk to him again, et cetera. Once you get these two items, you should be at level 7, close to level 8. Go to Brecconary or Tantagel Castle, heal up, and then go east across the east bridge, and again across another bridge. Head north and east and into the village of Kol. vii.) THE VILLAGE OF KOL +++ +++++++ ++ +++ SUGGESTED LEVEL – 7 ITEMS TO FIND – Fairy Flute. ITEMS TO BUY - Nothing for the time. INN – 20 gold SHOPS - *Weapons and Armor* Copper Sword – 180 gold (+10) Hand Axe – 560 gold (+15) Half Plate – 1,000 gold (+16) Full Plate – 3,000 gold (+24) Small Shield – 90 gold (+4) *Tools* Medicinal Herb – 24 gold Torch – 8 gold Dragon's Scale – 20 gold Wings – 70 gold As you enter the village of Kol, you'll notice that it's pretty small and easy to get around. There are a lot of doors that can't be passed through, but if you explore a little bit you'll actually notice that there is a way around almost every locked door. Your first order of business, even before talking to anyone, is to find the Fairy Flute. Go up to the one-block big waterhole at the top of town. Walk down from it four blocks. Then use the search command to get the Fairy Flute. You'll use this later. Now, you can talk to the townsfolk. The old man right of the beginning of the town tells you, "This is the village of Kol." The blue-haired man tells you, "Dreadful is the south island. Great strength and skill and wit only will bring thee back from that place." Up a tad bit more, go right and into the weapon shop, and talk to the Red Knight here. He'll say, "East of Hauksness there is a town, 'tis said, where one may purchase weapons of extraordinary quality." The wandering old man outside of the weapons shop says, "In legends, it is said that fairies know how to put Golem to sleep." (in otherwords, that's what we're using the recently acquired Fairy Flute for. =P) The wandering Red Knight'll ask, "Hast thou seen Nester? I think he may need help." Go up and talk to the stationary woman up near the waterbath, and she'll inform you that, "This bath cures rheumatism." I bet it does. =P Now go left, go across the small poison swamp and talk to the old man behind the desk. He'll let you know that, "Though thou art as brave as thy ancestor, [You], thou cannot defeat the great Dragonlord with such weapons. Thou shouldst come here again." Go down, ignore the door (you can't open it now anyway!) and talk to the wandering man, who'll ask, "Art thou a descendant of Erdrick? Hast thou any proof?" Then talk to the wandering green man, he'll ask you, "Hast thou been to the southern island?" You can answer "yes" or "no". If you answer "no" he'll say, "To the south, I believe, there is a town called Rimuldar." If you say "yes" he'll say, "I've heard that powerful enemies live there." Around that same area in the southwestern corner of the town is a guard. Talk to him (he's not moving), and he'll say, "Rimuldar is the place to buy keys." Good stuff, 'cause we'll need many of them to access all of the doors we've missed over the past while. (Since we started, actually. We'll make an excursion once we reach Rimuldar, we'll buy many keys and hit up all the doors we've missed, I promise) =) Now that's everyone in town. We're about to go make some more gold and level up some more. What we're gonna purchase this time around is a Half Plate for 1,000 gold, and we're also going to save up an additional 800 gold and go back to Garinham and buy a Large Shield. Can never hurt to be TOO prepared, no? This will give you a great opportunity to level up a lot! viii.) TIME TO LEVEL UP AND MAKE SOME GOLD AGAIN!!! ++++ ++ +++++ ++ +++ ++++ ++++ ++++ +++++ SUGGESTED LEVEL – You should start at level 7. By the time we're done, you'll be at level 9 or around that. (maybe 8, maybe even 10) ITEMS TO FIND – None. ITEMS TO BUY - Large Shield (800 gold) Half Plate (1,000 gold) Now to make this 1,800 gold (it's a lot), stay in the areas surrounding the village of Kol. Fight Magidrakees, fight Ghosts and Magicians, and even fight Skeletons. As always, don't wait until you make all of the money to buy the stuff you need. Make 800 gold, go to Garinham and buy the Large Shield, and then make another 1,000 gold and go to Kol and buy the Half Plate. Easy indeed. =) So run around outside of the village of Kol and earn the total of 1,800 gold. Then buy those two pieces of equipment. Now, before we go do what we need to do, we have to take care of a little side quest. We're gonna go retrieve the Fighter's Ring. ix.) ROCK MOUNTAIN CAVE AND THE FIGHTER'S RING ++++ ++++++++ ++++ +++ +++ +++++++ + ++++ SUGGESTED LEVEL – You'll start out on level 9, you'll finish off on either level 10 or 11, no higher. ITEMS TO FIND – 17 Gold 112 Gold Torch Fighter's Ring ITEMS TO BUY - Full Plate (from Kol, for 3,000 gold) From the village of Kol, you're going do want to go back to Tantagel Castle and heal up. That's your first order of business. Then you should probably run around and gain some experience points if you're not yet at level 9, although you should be by now. It's vital to be at level 9 because this is when you learn the spell Radiant, which has the same effect as a torch. Using a few MP, Radiant lights a radius around the character so he can see in dark caves and dungeons, and, as a matter of fact, Radiant actually lights up a greater area than the torch. Good stuff. =) From Tantagel Castle, after you're all healed up and on level 9, go west. Remember the bridge leading south, we fought some enemies down there but I told you to stay close to the bridge? Well, go back to that place. Go there, I'll wait. =) There yet? Good! Okay, from the bridge, head south, fighting enemies as you go. When you reach the bottom, go right, and then when the path branches into two areas, cut in half by some mountains, take the top route and enter the cave. This is Rock Mountain Cave, and you should definitely get the Fighter's Ring while we're here, it's the only reason we're here, actually. =) When you enter, immediately cast Radiant. Now, although our primary objective here is to get the Fighter's Ring, a sidequest of ours is also to get 3,000 gold to buy a Full Plate, which will significantly raise our defense even more then it already is, and trust me, this is a good thing. So first, let's just get the Fighter's Ring. Again, as you enter, cast Radiant. Then, go up, just keep taking the paths and keep going up until you hit a corner and a staircase. Ignore the staircase and head right. Keep heading right until you hit an intersection where you can keep going right or go down. Go right and then down, get the Herb from the treasure chest, and then go back to the intersection, down, and to the staircase. Take the staircase down. Now, go right and to an intersection, you can go up, down, or keep going right. Go down, and grab the treasure chest with 17 gold in it, and then shoot up until you hit a wall and can either go left or right. Go right, skipping the first two paths going down. On the third path going down, take it, and get the two treasure chests. One has a torch in it, the other has the Fighter's Ring. Go to Items, and equip the Fighter's Ring to gain small bonuses in speed and strength (+2 each). You can't take off the ring after you equip it, but that's okay, doesn't really matter. Now head south and around, and then back up to another chest, and get what's inside of it, 112 gold. Remember all of these chests reappear after you leave so you can keep coming back to get what you want. Now before we level up in here, I suggest that you go back to Tantagel and heal up. When you do decide to level up, after getting all healed, come back to the Rock Mountain Cave and roam around on the top level, you'll fight some Druids, Druins, Drakeemas and Warlocks, and whatnot. Once you hit 3,000 gold (and I'm sure you'll be leaving often to heal and save), go back to the Village of Kol, purchase the Full Plate, sell off your Half Plate, heal, and save. x.) SWAMP CAVE +++++ ++++ SUGGESTED LEVEL – You'll start out on level 10 or 11 (I was at level 11), and we're just shooting right through here, so no level change. ITEMS TO FIND – None. ITEMS TO BUY - None. Okay, the Swamp Cave is the cave that holds Princess Gwaelin. But hold your horses! Although our levels are sufficient, we aren't strong enough to fight the guardian that guards her yet, the Green Dragon. We need to simply get through the cave to the other side, go to Rimuldar, and take care of some stuff BEFORE we try to rescue the princess, including getting better equipment. Simply walk into the cave, cast Radiant, and shoot down south, a straight shot (not turning into ANY paths, you might run into the Green Dragon, and that'd be the end of you.), just go south, and go around the intrusion, go into the block area where the stairs is, and leave the cave. You're now outside on a completely different continent, and now we have to get to Rimuldar. Once outside, go west and then south, following the mountains, then go east and inside the mountain barrier. From there you should see the town, it sits on an island, with a desert-like path leading to it. Enter the town of Rimuldar. xi.) THE TOWN OF RIMULDAR +++ ++++ ++ ++++++++ SUGGESTED LEVEL – Whatever level you entered with. ITEMS TO FIND – Wings ITEMS TO BUY - If you have the money, buy a Broadsword for 1,500 gold. You shouldn't have enough money for the Magic Armor yet, we're going to run around and purchase it in a second, after exploring the town. Also, the Magic Keys are sold here, but don't bother purchasing 'em yet, not yet my friend. =) INN – 55 gold SHOPS - *Weapons and Armor* Copper Sword – 180 gold Hand Axe – 560 gold Broad Sword – 1500 gold Half Plate – 1000 gold Full Plate – 3000 gold Magic Armor – 7700 gold *Tools* Magic Key – 53 gold Welcome to the town of Rimuldar, a magical city indeed. Right when you enter, before you even go into the city itself, we should first visit where the Magic Keys are sold. Before crossing the bridge, go up, hugging the river as you go. Talk to the blue-haired man you come across, and he'll say, "I am Orwick, and I am waiting for my girlfriend." Good stuff. Head west, hugging the river, go down, across the bridge, and talk to the fat green man, and he'll say "Welcome!" Thank you! =P Then enter the building and talk to the man there, but don't buy any yet, we don't need them this second. Just walk straight out so you leave town, then walk back in (saves us the trip of having to walk all the way back around), and walk over the bridge, and talk to the wandering lady. She'll say, "No, I have no tomatoes. I have no tomatoes today." Good to know, although I don't recall asking for tomatoes... =) Proceed to go up and into the weapons shop. Talk to the man behind the desk and purchase a Broadsword for 1500 gold, but ignore the Magic Armor for now, we'll get that really soon, I promise. Talk to the red knight walking around in there and he'll say, "The scales of the Dragonlord are as hard as steel." And he isn't lying. =) Now shoot down to the Inn. Rest if you need to, and talk to the traveling 'ol Red Knight in there as well. He'll say, "You are [You]? It has been long since last we met." Then go back up and go to the two rooms next to the weapon shop. Talk to the guy not moving in one of the rooms and he'll say, "Who art thou? Leave at once or I will call my friends." Scary. Now, circle around going left, and talk to the old man on the island-like area. He'll say, "Over the western part of this island, Erdrick created a rainbow. 'Tis also said that he entered the darkness from a hidden entrance in the room of the Dragonlord." Interesting. Go back into the middle, talk to the man there. He asks, "Art thou a descendant of Erdrick? Hast thou any proof?" Damn leave me alone! =) Talk to the Guard and he'll say, "Thou shalt find the Stones of Sunlight in Tantegel Castle is thou has not found them yet." Talk to the wandering Red Knight and he'll say, "Is that a wedding ring? Thou seems too young to be married." Good call. Now go inside the large building to the south of the town. Talk to the Red Knight in there, he'll ask, "In this world is there any sword that can pierce the scales of the Dragonlord?" Yes there is, soon we'll get it. The guy in this building warns, "Heed my warning! Travel not to the south for there the monsters are fierce and terrible." And do heed that warning, don't go down there yet. The woman in this room says, "Before long the enemy will arrive." The old man behind the desk says, "This is a magic place. Hast thou found a magic temple? If you answer "yes" he says, "In this temple do sun and rain meet." If you say "no" he says, "Go to the south." Good good. Now go back to the Magic Key shop, purchase two Magic Keys. Go to the Inn and unlock the two doors there with them. Now you'll want to get the Wings in the Treasure Chest (use them to get back to the Castle anytime) and talk to the old man, who'll say, "Good day, I am Howard. Four steps south of the bath in Kol thou shalt find a magic item." He's talking about the Fairy's Flute which you already have. Now it's time to go level up, and get the gold for the Magic Armor. xii.) LEVELING UP, PURCHASING THE MAGIC ARMOR ++++++++ ++ ++++++++++ +++ +++++ +++++ SUGGESTED LEVEL – Start on level 11, you should at end at at least level 12, maybe even 13. ITEMS TO FIND – None. ITEMS TO BUY - Once you hit 7700 gold, go to Rimuldar and buy the Magic Armor. Level up outside of Rimuldar, the goal is 7700 gold, but you should also invest in five Magic Keys as well, so make it more around 8000. It's not as bad as you think. But don't just fight Goldmen, because you also want to get experience points. While Goldmen give you 200 gold, they give you 6 experience points. Stick fighting Wyverns, Metal Scorpions, et cetera. Once you hit that amount, go back to town, buy your merchandise, and go to the Swamp Cave. It's time to save the Princess from the Green Dragon. xiii.) BACK TO THE SWAMP CAVE – RESCUE PRINCESS GWAELIN ++++ ++ +++ +++++ ++++ ++++++ ++++++++ +++++++ SUGGESTED LEVEL – Level 12, although I was on level 13, couldn't hurt to be on 13. ITEMS TO FIND – None. ITEMS TO BUY - None. Go north from Rimuldar, back to Swamp Cave. Once in the cave, cast Radiant. Make sure you're all healed and saved before taking on the Green Dragon, he can be a tough one. With the Magic Armor equipped, you'll start automatically healing yourself so that shouldn't be a problem. (1 Hit Point every few steps). From the south entrance of the cave, go straight north until you hit the northern entrance of the cave, then go right, and down, hugging the right hand wall. Once you hit a barrier, go left a bit and through the door. You'll run into the Green Dragon. The trick with the Green Dragon is not to put him to sleep, just constantly hit him up with your Broadsword, and keep yourself healed. If you find yourself in trouble, run away, regroup (you can go north to Kol or south to Rimuldar to heal) and then try again. Or you can put him to sleep, heal, attack, repeat. I use that myself sometimes. Either way, once he perishes, go behind where he was, use one of your Magic Keys on the door, and talk to the captive princess. She'll say, "Thou art brave indeed to rescue me, [You]. I am Gwaelin, Daughter of Lorik. Will thou take me to the castle?" If you answer "no" she'll say, "But thou must." So say "yes" and it'll say Princess Gwaelin embraces thee. Then she'll say "I'm so happy." Use the Outside spell to get outside of the Swamp Cave, and then use the Return spell to get back to the Castle. xiv.) REVISITING TANTEGEL CASTLE ++++++++++ ++++++++ ++++++ SUGGESTED LEVEL – 13 ITEMS TO FIND – Four chests with small amounts of gold. ITEMS TO BUY - None. Once in the castle, go to the throne room and talk to the King. He'll say, "Forever shall I be grateful for the gift of my daughter returned to her home, [You]. Accept my thanks. Now Gwaelin, come to my side." Then it says that Gwaelin whispers to her father, "Wait a moment, please. I would like to give a present to [You]. Please accept my love, QuickMan. Even when we two are parted by great distances, I shall be with thee. Farewell, [You]" You get Gwaelin's Love out of this, which allows you to see your current position in the worldmap and she'll tell you how many experience points you need to go up another level. Good stuff... onward. Talk to the three guards in the throne room, they all have something new to say. The one moving around says, ""Oh brave [You]." The one to the left of the door says, "A word of advice. Save thy money for more expensive armor." Don't listen to him though, you have the most expensive armor you can buy in the Magic Armor, only Erdrick's Armor is stronger, and we aren't there yet, so worry not. The guard to the right of the door says, "Listen to what people say. It can be of great help." Leave the throne room. The man and two guards by the door have nothing new to say, but the woman wondering around says, "Thank you for saving the princess." The guard in the little hole in the wall near the man behind the desk has some hateful words for you. He says, "Oh my dearest Gwaelin! I hate thee, [You]." No one else here has anything new to say. Circle up and around, near the guard that tells you you need a key to open a door. Open the door near him, and go buy some more Magic Keys for 85 gold from the fat merchant behind the desk. The woman near his desk says, "When the sun and rain meet, a Rainbow Bridge shall appear. It's a legend." (little does she know she's right on.) Anyway, go south, and talk to the guard standing by the weird looking floor. He says, "If thy hit points are high enough, by all means, enter." Cross the floor (lose 25 hit points each step) and talk to the Red Knight, who says, "In Garinham, look for the grave of Garin. Thou must push on a wall of darkness there." Heal yourself and then cross back over the floor. Talk to the wandering Red Knight here who says, "I am looking for the castle cellar. I heard it is not easily found." Go left and talk to the old man who says, "Let us wish the warrior well! May the light be thy strength." Why thank you old man. =) Circle back around to that locked door, behind which is a guard and four treasure chests. Although the guard says "Never does a brave man steal," take what's in the chests anyway. All that's in the chests is some small quantities of gold, but take it anyway. Once done here, it's time to revisit Garinham... xv.) REVISITING GARINHAM ++++++++++ ++++++++ SUGGESTED LEVEL – 13 ITEMS TO FIND – Torch Herb Small Amount of Gold ITEMS TO BUY - None. Once in Garinham, ignore all of the townsfolk, none of them have anything new to say. In fact, they're all still talking about Gwaelin, how she got kidnapped, and where she can be found. Shows that someone's gotta update these poor people! Anyway, enter the large building, using a Magic Key on the door to the right of the small town. Talk to the wandering old man in the beginning, and he'll let you know that, "They say that Erdrick's armor was hidden long ago." The fat green man by the treasure chests says, "I suggest making a map if thy path leads into the darkness." No thanks buddy. =) Then proceed to open his treasure chests to find an Herb, a Torch, and a small amount of gold. Open the door to his left and talk to the two guards in there. Coincidentally, neither of them has anything useful to say, except they both tell you, "I'm too busy. Ask the other guard." Bastards! =) Leave that small room and talk to the wandering man, who'll say, "Once there was a town called Hauksness far to the south, but I do not know if it still exists." Then talk to the hostile lady in the room, who lets you know that, "I hate people! Go! Leave me!" In the words of the best band in the world, 311: "Misdirected hostility, that's what you got you see!" Mwa-ha ha. Anyway, that's everyone in the room. Do you remember the people talking about a secret dark room, having to push on the darkness and such? Well this is where you do just that. Go three steps from the top of the building from the left and press up. You'll go through the wall to an area behind the building. Go right, talk to the old man, and he'll say, "The harp attracts enemies. Stay away from the grave in Garinham." Cross the bridge, and go down the stairs to his right. xvi.) GARIN'S GRAVE +++++ + +++++ SUGGESTED LEVEL – 13 ITEMS TO FIND – ITEMS TO BUY - Silver Harp Herb Small Amounts of Gold Cursed Belt Before you enter the grave, make sure to have a few Magic Keys on hand. Good to go now? Excellent. Enter the grave, and immediately, as always inside dungeons and caves, cast Radiant. Now there is another good item in this dungeon other than the Silver Harp, which is the Cursed Belt. Find it if you like, but you'll want to get in and out of this pretty big dungeon I think. If you do get the Cursed Belt, DO NOT EQUIP IT! Sell it for whatever you can get for it. Trust me. If you do happen to equip it, go see the man in Brecconary who'll heal your curse. From the entrance, after casting Radiant, go right and then up until you come across a huge intersection, at which point you'll want to go right again until you hit the wall. Then go all the way up and left to retrieve the Herb, and some Gold. Then go back right and go all the way down until you can't go down anymore. At this point, go left and use a Magic Key on the door to get through. Then go all the way left and to the stairs. Go up. On the second floor, you'll come right up by a staircase, but ignore it for now. Go left and ignore the staircase there as well, and then go down and go down that staircase. You'll now be on the third floor. From that staircase, just shoot up, keep going up until you can't go up anymore. Now you'll want to go right and down a tad and go down that staircase as well. Now just circle around this wide-open room, go down the stairs on the other side, and open the treasure chest to get the Silver Harp. Cast Outside to get out of the grave and then Return to get back to the Castle. Heal yourself at the Castle and then travel towards Kol. There is a dungeon-door northwest of Kol, that's where we want to go. To get there, go across the bridge you'd cross eastward to get the Kol. Go up as if you were going to Kol, but slip through the little crack in the mountains west of Kol and follow the forested path upwards to the dungeon. Talk to the old man in there and he'll say that he's been waiting a long time for you, and that he thanks you and disappears. Open the chest he was guarding to get the Staff of Rain! Alright! Now, my friends... we have to level up again. *laughs maniacally* xvii.) LEVELING UP AGAIN, GETTING THE STONES OF SUNLIGHT AND TOWNHOPING ++++++++ ++ +++++ +++++++ +++ ++++++ ++ ++++++++ +++ ++++++++++ SUGGESTED LEVEL – You'll start out on 13, you'll end up at 15 ITEMS TO FIND – None. ITEMS TO BUY - None. Again, we have to level up, and this time, go up two levels. Trust me, it's important, so stop yer whining! =) Also in this little escapade of ours, we should go and revisit some of the towns we haven't visited since we rescued the Princess, just to see if anyone has anything new to say. I've chosen to go visit these places first, and THEN level up, so that's what we're going to do. Come on. First off, go to the Village of Kol. No one has anything new to say here, but open the door with a Magic Key to the west of the village entrapping an old man and talk to him. He'll ask you, "Has thou found the flute?" If you answer "yes" then he'll tell you to, "Go to the town of Cantlin." If you answer "no" he'll tell you that, "Howard had it, but he went to Rimuldar and never returned." This is it for Kol. Head south through the Swamp Cave and south again to Rimuldar. Once in Rimuldar, notice that no one has anything new to say to you, but you should definitely restock on cheap Magic Keys here. Go back to Tantagel Castle, for now it's time to find the Stones of Sunlight. To get to this basement that the stones are in, open the door at the top of the castle, where you opened up all of the other areas of the castle. Go up to where the Magic Key salesman is, and the woman next to him. Carefully go around her and down, and then carefully around the river, and into the cellar. Talk to the old man there, and he'll say, "I have been waiting long for one such as thee. Take the Treasure Chest." Well do what he says! =) Open the treasure chest to receive the Staff of Rain. Now we really can level up. (and save a lot of cash too) The best place to do this is probably in Garin's Grave over in Garinham. Fight monsters on the third and fourth floors, amongst them DrollMagi, Druinlords, Specters, and the dreaded Wraith Knights. Put the Wraith Knights to sleep and then fight 'em, otherwise they'll give you a pretty hard time. Once you reach 23,600 gold (that's the magic number) and are at least on level 15, it's time to head to the town of Cantlin. To get there, it's in a very remote region. Go south to where we were fighting a long time ago, south of Garinham "down, down, way down" (in the words of the hypnotherapist in the great movie Office Space). Go south through the huge desert, ignoring the town in the northern desert for now. Go east across the bridge, then go north across another bridge (the northern most one). The town is here. Enter the gates and be greeted by a huge Golem. Use the Fairy Flute to put him to sleep, and then hit the crap out of him with your sword. Welcome to Cantlin. xvii.) THE TOWN OF CANTLIN +++ ++++ ++ +++++++ SUGGESTED LEVEL – 15, although I was on 16. Ooooooh! =) ITEMS TO FIND – None. ITEMS TO BUY - Flame Sword Silver Shield INN – 100 Gold SHOPS - Flame Sword – 9800 Gold Silver Shield – 14800 Gold Bamboo Pole – 10 Gold Club – 60 Gold Copper Sword – 180 Gold Leather Armor – 70 Gold Chain Mail – 300 Gold Large Shield – 800 Gold Herb – 24 Gold Torch – 8 Gold Dragon's Scale – 20 Gold Wings – 70 Gold Fairy Water – 38 Gold Your first order of business is to simply get grounded in the town; the town is absolutely huge. There are a lot of shops here, none you really need to concern yourself with, however. Only one, and this one's behind a locked magic door which you'll need a Magic Key for. To get there, from the entrance of the town, go down to the first intersection, and then left. Open up the door, and buy any Magic Keys you need from the old man and the Flame Sword and Silver Shield from the guard behind the desk. Now lets go talk to the townfolk. The guard right at the entrance says, "Welcome to Cantlin, the castle town." Thankee kindly. =) Travel down a bit and talk the guard who'll say, "It is said that many have held Erdrick's armor. The last to have it was a fellow named Wynn." There should be two wandering woman to his left, they say, "I know nothing," and "What shall I get for thy dinner?" There should be a guard hanging around the left side of the town, he'll say, "'Tis said that the Dragonlord hath claws that can cleave iron and fiery breath that can melt stone. Doth thou still wish to go on? If you answer "yes" he'll say, "Thou art truly brave," and if you say "no" he'll say, "That is good. No one will say thou art afraid." Now, go to the large structure in the center of the town, enter at any angle. Talk to the old man in there who'll say, "To learn how proof may be obtained that thy ancestor was the great Erdrick, see a man in this very town." It's all coming together now. Go east of the large structure, using a key on one of the two doors of a building in the southwest corner of town. Talk to the fat man behind the counter and he'll say, "My grandfather Wynn once had a shop on the east side of Hauksness." Near the inn is a man walking around, Nester, the one people have been mentioning all game. He says, "I'm Nester. Hey, where am I? No, don't tell me!" Alrighty then. South of the inn is a green man walking around who says, "Grandfather used to say that his friend, Wynn, had buried something of great value at the floor of a tree behind his shop." Near him is an old man behind a desk who says, "'Tis said that Erdrick's sword could cleave steel." xviii.) THE QUEST FOR ERDRICK'S GEAR +++ +++++ +++ +++++++ + ++++ SUGGESTED LEVEL – 16 ITEMS TO FIND – Erdrick's Armor Erdrick's Token Erdrick's Sword ITEMS TO BUY - None. Now before we go fight Dragonlord, we have to do two things – get the three Erdrick items, and level up a lot. Honestly, it's a good idea to get the equipment first, so lets do that. Remember the town in the north part of the large desert we came across on the way to Cantlin? I told you not to enter it, but you can now. This is the deserted and destroyed town of Hauksness, destroyed by the Dragonlord and his minions of evil. This is where we can find Erdrick's Sword, however. Lets do that now. Once you enter the town, head south. You don't want to dilly-dally in this town, some of the strongest enemies in the game are located in this town. When you run into Werewolves, Starwyverns, Green Dragons, et cetera... RUN AWAY! Run and heal, repeat. So go south, then go east along the bottom. When you see swamp ground towards the southwest area of the town, and a tree in the middle of it (near a vacant shop – rings a bell, no?), then go up to the swamp, and before stepping on the tree, heal yourself. Step on the tree to fight an Axe Knight. He can put you to sleep, so the first thing to do in the battle is cast Stopspell. After you successfully cast the spell, fight him and heal as needed. When he is defeated, search the ground you are standing on to find Erdrick's Armor. It equips itself automatically. Erdrick's Armor does many things. It has the highest defense of any armor in the game (and combined with the Silver Shield you bought in Cantlin, you're set defensively), it heals one hit point for every step you take (instead of every few steps as with the Magic Armor), and those special floors and swamps that deal you damage no longer effect you at all. Now go to Cantlin, we have to talk to someone there. On the way to Cantlin, as you're heading north to the topmost bridge that leads you to the city, go, instead, across the southern-most bridge there. You'll find a huge swamp. Go into the swamp which won't hurt you now that you have Erdrick's Armor, and walk through the small pass by the mountains going east, still in the swamp. Use Gwaelin's Love to figure out your exact position on the map, you need to be 70-40 from Tantegel Castle. Once she says you are 70-40 from here, search the ground to find Erdrick's Token. Now go to Cantlin. Now the person we're looking for here is going to tell you where to find the Erdrick's Token, but it's good just to talk to everyone to feel a sense of completeness, if you know what I mean. So go to Cantlin, and enter the large building in the center of town. Exit through the south and use one of your Magic Keys on one of the doors there, circle around, and talk to the old man. He says, "Let us wish the warrior well! May the light be thy strength! Thou may go and search. From Tantegel Castle travel 70 leagues to the south and 40 to the east." Stuff you already know, but alas, what is is. =) Let us now go to Charlock Castle. Don't worry, we're not fighting the Dragonlord yet, we need Erdrick's Sword, however. So leave Cantlin, cast Return, heal up at the castle, and head towards Swamp Cave and Rimuldar. Cast the spell Repel so that you don't have to deal with weak enemies as you go. Once you reach Rimuldar, keep heading south 'til you come to a bridge. Cross the bridge, circle around the mountains, and enter the hideout. Talk to the old man here who'll say, "Now the sun and rain shall meet and the Raindow Drop passes to thy keeping." Now go back to Rimuldar and heal up, cast Repel again, and go to the desertous area northwest of Rimuldar, all the way to the end of the peninsula. Pick the Rainbow Drop in your items list and the screen will flash brilliant colors. A bridge will then appear. Cross the bridge and follow the linear path to Charlock Castle, home of the Dragonlord, but for the time being, home of Erdrick's Sword. Once inside you have two paths you can take. Take the left path. Take it around and you'll see a throne at the top of the screen. Walk up to it and go to the back of it. Search the back to discover a secret passageway. Enter the dungeon. Now, the first leg of the trek is very linear, so just follow the path to the next stairs. Go down the stairs. Then, again, take the linear path past the treasure chest containing Erdrick's Sword (it's out of reach for now), and again, go down the stairs. Repeat this process one more time, another linear passageway to a staircase. Now it gets interesting. Go down a bit, and then all the way left, and down to the stairway. From here, go right and then up. Down go down the stairway, instead go back down to the left of where you just came up and go up the stairs here. Now, the rest of your path is linear, keep going up the stairs, and finally, down a flight of stairs to a small boxed-off room with the treasure chest containing Erdrick's Sword in it. You now have the best sword, armor, and shield in the game, plus all of the other items you need. Now we just have to level up. xix.) LEVELING UP FOR THE LAST TIME ++++++++ ++ +++ +++ ++++ ++++ SUGGESTED LEVEL – 16, end on 20 ITEMS TO FIND – None. ITEMS TO BUY - None. Now that you have all of the best gear in the game, you have to level up. Before challenging Charlock and the Dragonlord, you should be on AT LEAST level 20, preferably higher. The levels go up to level 30, if you want to be confident, go that high if it suits you. Until level 18, fight the enemies in the desert around Hauksness. Once you reach level 18, go inside Hauksness and get to level 20. Once at level 20, you're ready to take on the Dragonlord. Of course, keep leveling up until you feel confident. Cast return and heal up at the castle. Once outside, cast Repel, and go to Swamp Cave, through it, to Rimuldar. Heal at Rimuldar, cast Repel again, and go to Charlock Castle across the secret bridge. It's time. xix.) CHARLOCK CASTLE AND THE DRAGONLORD ++++++++ ++++++ +++ +++ ++++++++++ SUGGESTED LEVEL – 20+ ITEMS TO FIND – None. ITEMS TO BUY - None. *****RUN FROM ALL ENEMIES IN THE CASTLE! CONSERVE YOUR HP AND MP!***** Okay, once in Charlock, go back behind the throne in the main room, enter the secret dungeon, and cast Radiant. Follow the first two linear paths we come across, the same ones we took when we got Erdrick's Sword. From here, head down and left at the immediate intersection, go all the way left, and then down, and go down the stairs. Go all the way up, then right, and go down, and go back left to the staircase. Go down it. Follow the outside path to the next staircase. Now you're in the courtyard and you can see the Dragonlord in a room to your right. Take the left path and go up and follow the paths around (don't bother with the treasure chests), and keep going around to the Dragonlord. Talk to him. He'll say, "Welcome, [You], I am the Dragonlord—King of Kings. I have been waiting long for one such as thee. I give thee now a chance to share this world and to rule half of it if thou will now stand beside me. What sayest thou? Will the great warrior stand with me?" You should answer "no" but if you say "yes" he will say, "Really?" and you answer "yes" again and he says, "Then half of this world is thine, half of the darkness, and... If thou dies I can bring thee back for another attempt without loss of thy deeds to date." Then the screen turns red. "Thy journey is over. Take now a long, long rest. Hahahaha..." Then you're dead. But answer "no" like you should and he says, "Thou art a fool!" and the battle commences. Keep in mind the first Dragonlord you fight is a fake, but you have to fight it anyway, just use sword attacks. Attack magic doesn't work on either form of the Dragonlord. You have to simply keep up your health and attack when you can, that's the basic way to beat the Dragonlord, there is no more in-depth advice I can give you. He breathes fire A LOT so make sure your health is always above 50. Go all out to make sure to get to him with as much MP as you can, HP as well, but MP is primary. Use Fairy Water, use Herbs, walk around to get your health, do all of that to make sure you make it to him healthy. When you beat him, it says, "Thou hast found the Ball of Light. Radiance streams forth as thy hands touch the object and hold it aloft. Across the land spreads the brilliance until all shadows are banished and peace is restored." Then you'll automatically be outside of Charlock, all healed up and such. Cast return to head back to Tantegel. **********SPOILER – ENDING!!!********** Walk inside the castle and all of the guards tell you to go up to the King, he's near the stairs to the throne room. Talk to him, and he says, "The legends have proven true. Thou art indeed of the line of Erdrick. It is thy right to rule over this land. Will thou take my place?" Then it says, "[You] thought carefully before answering." "I cannot," said [You]. "If I am to rule a country, it must be a land that I myself find." Then Gwaelin says, "Please, wait. I wish to go with thee on thy journey. May I travel as thy companion?" You should answer "yes" but if you answer "no" she'll say "But I must." This is not like the regular walkthrough above... this is instead a quick run-through of the game, step by step, no in-depth stuff, just running on through it. This is if you have the general idea, you're just stuck on what to do next. I saw this on a walkthrough on GameFAQs for Zelda: Majora's Mask on the Nintendo64 back when I was playing that in November of 2000, so I thought I'd throw in a quick one of my own for Dragon Warrior! Here we go! 1.) Talk to the King, retrieve what's in the treasure chests. 2.) Walk around the castle, talk to everyone. 3.) Leave the castle, head east to Brecconary. 4.) Talk to the townsfolk in Brecconary, buy a Club and Clothes. 5.) Run around and gain levels outside of the town and castle to level 5. Buy Leather Armor, a Copper Sword, and Small Shield. 6.) Go north to Erdrick's Cave and retrieve Erdrick's Tablet. 7.) Go northwest to the town of Garinham and talk to the townfolk. 8.) Level up outside of town, buy Chain Mail and a Hand Axe. 9.) Go far east to the Village of Kol – Talk to the townsfolk and retrieve the Fairy's Flute, located four steps down from the bath that cures rheumatism. 10.) Level up outside of town, purchase a Large Shield in Garinham and a Half Plate in Kol. 11.) Go west and then south to Rock Mountain Cave. 12.) Traverse the cave, retrieve the Fighter's Ring, and equip it. 13.) Level up around the cave, purchase a Full Plate from Kol. 14.) Go to the Swamp Cave, avoid the Green Dragon, shoot down to the southern continent. 15.) Head south to the town of Rimuldar. Buy a Broadsword, talk to everyone, then head outside, level up, and save 7700 gold for the Magic Armor. (Optionally, buy two Magic Keys and open the two doors in the Inn, talking to Howard and getting the Wings in the treasure chest). 16.) Go back to Swamp Cave, fight the Green Dragon, rescue Princess Gwaelin, bring her to King Lorik and receive her love. 17.) Talk to everyone in the castle, get information, buy Magic Keys if needed, and head to Garinham. 18.) Open the northeast door in the town, gain access to Garin's Grave. Then traverse the grave and retrieve the Silver Harp. 19.) Go to the old man northwest of Kol and trade your Silver Harp for the Staff of Rain. 20.) Level up to level 15, and go back to the villages and towns, retalk to everyone incase they have anything new to say, and open any doors you can with your Magic Keys. Explore and level up. 21.) If you have 23,600 gold saved up and are at least at level 15, time to go to the town of Cantlin. Go south past the large desert, then head east to get to the remote town. Once there, talk to everyone, and purchase a Silver Shield and the Flame Sword with the money you've stock-piled. 22.) Before the huge final level-up of the game, we should go get the Erdrick's Sword, Erdrick's Token and Erdrick's Armor. The Sword is found in Charlock; the Armor is found in Hauksness. The Token is found in the swamp south of Cantlin at thhe coordinates 70S-40E. 23.) Heal and then level up outside of Hauksenss to level 18 and then inside Hauksness for level 20. Heal, go to Charlock Castle. 24.) Navigate the castle to the Dragonlord himself, fight the fake Dragonlord and then the real Dragonlord. (Answer "no" when he asks you to join him or he'll kill you). 25.) Defeat his two forms, return to Tantegel Castle, talk to King Lorik. Really fast. =) While none of the enemies in Charlock except the Stoneman are really hard, you have to conserve your Herbs, MP and HP for the big show against the Dragonlord himself. **Blue Dragon** HP: 70 Gold: 150 EXP: 60 Special Attacks – Breathes fire Spell(s) – None Area – Charlock Castle Base Type - Dragon Description: The Blue Dragon is a slightly stronger version of the Green Dragon, and is only found in Charlock, so you shouldn't be fighting him, you should be running away. He breathes fire like his predecessor, but he does it a lot stronger and takes away a lot more damage. Just run. **Demon Knight** HP: 50 Gold: 150 EXP: 37 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – None Area – Fields around Hauksness Base Type - Knight Description: The Demon Knight is a very mysterious enemy that is only a silhouette, and you often miss him when you go to attack him. He packs a powerful punch however, you should kill them if you can for the amount of experience and gold they surrender. In later levels, you won't miss them at all, either. **Drakee** HP: 6 Gold: 3 EXP: 2 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – None Area – Fields in the early areas of the game, around places like Tantegel. Base Type - Drakee Description: The Drakee is the most fierce of the three early enemies you meet in the game. With 6 HP, the Drakee can outlive your character if you aren't very, very careful. I've heard he can use spells as well, but I've never seen it myself. **Drakeema** HP: 20 Gold: 20 EXP: 11 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – Hurt Area – Various dungeons and caves Base Type - Drakee Description: The Drakeema seems like he's almost bioluminescent, but the fact of the matter is with his two spell duo, he can pack some punch. He utilizes the spell Hurt which he uses often, and he also can heal himself fully. Pack a punch of your own and beware that he heals himself often. **Droll** HP: 25 Gold: 25 EXP: 10 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – None Area – Early caves and dungeons Base Type - Droll Description: The Droll is your run-of-the-mill dungeon and cave crawling monster. He has no special moves or spells, he's all brute force. He really shouldn't give you too much trouble, though. **Drollmagi** HP: 38 Gold: 90 EXP: 22 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – Heal and Hurt Area – Late-game dungeons and caves Base Type - Droll Description: The Drollmagi is a much more powerful version of the Droll, using a barrage of spells and hard-hitting physical attacks against you. It can heal itself and use Hurt as well, so the battles might last a little longer than you're used to. Hit it hard and quick, if it heals itself, keep working on it, the gold and experience he sacrifices are worth it for you. **Druin** HP: 20 Gold: 16 EXP: 7 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – None Area – Early caves and dungeons Base Type - Druin Description: Another run-of-the-mill dungeon and cave monster, the Druin is also special attack-less, but packs a powerful punch with his regular attacks and has quite a few HPs as well. You'll want to keep an eye on your HPs and perhaps use Hurt to take this foe out. **Druinlord** HP: 35 Gold: 85 EXP: 20 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – Hurt Area – Later-game dungeons and caves Base Type - Druin Description: Whilst the Druinlord isn't exactly threatening to you, it's more threatening than its weaker cousin, the Druin, and can use magic as well as its cousin, if not better. Beware of it's constant use of the Hurt spell. **Ghost** HP: 7 Gold: 5 EXP: 3 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – None Area – Fields around Kol and some desert areas. Base Type - Ghost Description: The Ghost can be a problem in the early stages of the game, but once you acquire the Hurt spell come level 4, you'll be okay. Usually one hit with the Hurt spell and the Ghost'll perish instantly. Once around levels 4 and 5, two hits with the Club or one hit with the Copper Sword'll do him in as well. **Goldman** HP: 50 Gold: 200 EXP: 6 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – None Area – South of Rimuldar, south of Hauksness Base Type - Golem Description: The Goldman is a large monster made of stone, possible gold blocks. He has a strong defense and attacks with a powerful punch, but lacks any spell usage. The real advantage to fighting these guys it that you can get up to 200 gold for beating one, although the experience points you get from them leaves something to be desired, for sure. **Golem** HP: 70 Gold: 10 EXP: 5 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – None Area – Entrance to Cantlin, Charlock Castle Base Type - Golem Description: Although the Golem is a real enemy, your only experience with him may be when you fight him at the entrance to Cantlin, putting him to sleep with the Fairy Flute, killing him, and getting the measly reward he leaves behind. He's an easy enemy to fight, but the rewards are certainly not worth it. **Green Dragon** HP: 65 Gold: 160 EXP: 45 Special Attacks – Breathes Fire Spell(s) – None Area – Dungeon were you rescue Princess Gwaelin, Charlock Castle Base Type - Dragon Description: The Green Dragon is originally fought as a boss, guarding the kidnapped Princess Gwaelin. And he's tough when you fight him there, he definitely gives you a hard time. Later in the game, however, the Green Dragon is fought as a regular old enemy and is exactly the same, you're just much stronger by that point. Two vast differences in time, not enemy. **Knight** HP: 55 Gold: 130 EXP: 33 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – Stopspell Area – Various fields and dungeons Base Type - Knight Description: The Knight is a large monster, and will probably give you a scare the first few times you fight him until you realize he isn't that hard to fight at all! He uses Stopspell often but that shouldn't stop you from hitting away at him with your sword. He's an easy target, trust me, no matter how scary he is. **Magician** HP: 13 Gold: 12 EXP: 4 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – Hurt Area – North and east of Tantegel, all the way to the Kol region Base Type - Mage Description: The Magician is an enemy you'll DEFINITELY want to run away from in the stages of the game before you hit level 4 and get the Hurt spell. After you get the Hurt spell, use it twice on this monster to kill him, getting a lot of gold from him in return, and some experience to boot. **Magidrakee** HP: 15 Gold: 9 EXP: 5 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – Hurt Area – Southern continents Base Type - Drakee Description: The Magidrakee is a formidable opponent. He has quite a lot of hit points and can cast powerful magic in the Hurt spell. You'll want to combat him using the Hurt spell combined with regular attacks for best results. Run away or heal if his Hurt spell starts doing significant damage. **Magiwyvern** HP: 58 Gold: 130 EXP: 34 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – Sleep Area – Southern continents, around coastlines Base Type - Wyvern Description: Although his name suggests he's a powerful magic user, don't be fooled – The Magiwyvern is NOTHING compared to his annoying stronger cousin, the Starwyvern. While he can use one spell, Sleep, he doesn't use it as annoyingly well as his cousin, and he can't heal himself either. Basically, enjoy slaying this Wyvern, they get harder. **Metal Scorpion** HP: 22 Gold: 40 EXP: 14 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – None Area – Deserts in the south Base Type - Scorpion Description: The Metal Scorpion is extremely similar to that of the regular Scorpion in that it's all attack, no magic. But, naturally, this elite version of the Scorpion attacks with more power, and has a higher defense, making him more of a threat to you, the player. He doesn't have many hit points, though, so take him out quickly. **Metal Slime** HP: 4 Gold: 6 EXP: 115 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – None Area – Fields around Hauksness Base Type - Slime Description: The Metal Slime is a very interesting creature indeed. He is but a slime, but can cast magic, and has a very, very high defense, so often you won't do any damage to him. He also runs from battle often. If you're lucky enough to score a kill on this rare Slime, you'll get 115 experience points, more experience than any other enemy in the game. **Poltergeist** HP: 23 Gold: 18 EXP: 8 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – Hurt Area – Dungeons and caves later in the game Base Type - Ghost Description: The Poltergeist is basically a spell-using Ghost, and he's just stronger offensively and defensively then a ghost as well. The Poltergeist can use the Hurt spell, and that combined with a pretty powerful regular attack makes him a considerable threat early on. **Red Dragon** HP: 100 Gold: 140 EXP: 100 Special Attacks – Breathes fire Spell(s) – None Area – Charlock Castle Base Type - Dragon Description: The Red Dragon is the most powerful enemy in the game, other than the Dragonlord himself. He is the strongest Dragon AND the strongest enemy, and can really give you a hard time. They are found in Charlock Castle, so what does that tell you? RUN AWAY! =) **Red Slime** HP: 4 Gold: 2 EXP: 1 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – None Area – Everywhere, mainly around Tantegel and the northern continent Base Type - Slime Description: The Red Slime is a slightly stronger version of the regular Slime and can potentially give you some problems if you're not well equipped or low on hit points early in the game. That one extra hit point they have and extra attack power the Red Slime possess can mean death to the player very early in the game. Don't take them too lightly... =P **Rogue Scorpion** HP: 35 Gold: 110 EXP: 26 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – None Area – Near Charlock Base Type - Scorpion Description: The Rogue Scorpion is easily the strongest Scorpion in the game, but he still shouldn't give you too much trouble. He hits for pretty good damage, but once you have Erdrick's Armor and Erdrick's Sword, he's nothing more than mincemeat. **Scorpion** HP: 20 Gold: 16 EXP: 6 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – None Area – Early on the southern continent Base Type - Scorpion Description: The Scorpion has nothing special in his inventory, he's just a very good fighter and can do a lot of damage. He'll chip away at your HP and you won't even realize it. He also has quite a few hit points in addition to his strong attack power, so be weary of that as well. Use magic if you want, but regular attacking never hurt either. **Skeleton** HP: 30 Gold: 30 EXP: 11 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – None Area – Southern continent, early stages of the game Base Type - Skeleton Description: The Skeleton is a well-feared enemy to combat, even throughout the latter stages in the game, when you get to level 8 and 9. He packs a powerful punch and has a lot of hit points. Try using Hurt on him, or even put him to sleep if you'd like, although he easily awakens from slumber. **Slime** HP: 3 Gold: 1 EXP: 1 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – None Area – Fields around Tantegel Base Type - Slime Description: The Slime is the most primitive enemy in the world of Dragon Warrior. With any weapon except your bare fists and the Bamboo Pole, you can beat the Slime in one hit. He's worth a measly 1 experience point and 1 gold piece, but it's worth it in the beginning stages of the game. Once you raise a few levels they'll run like the Dickens from you, however. =) **Specter** HP: 36 Gold: 70 EXP: 18 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – Sleep and Hurt Area – Later-game dungeons and caves Base Type - Ghost Description: A fairly powerful enemy, the only downside to the Specter is his real lack of hit points, and his weak defense that allows you to slash through him easily. He has been known to put a character to sleep and hit him hard with the Hurt spell however, so be weary. **Starwyvern** HP: 65 Gold: 160 EXP: 43 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – Sleep and Healmore Area – Southern continent, near Charlock Base Type - Wyvern Description: Ah yes, the Starwyvern. In my opinion, the most ANNOYING enemy in the game, simply because he drags out the fights with the greatest of ease with his sleep spell, but more importantly, his Healmore spell. If you don't kill him in two hits, chances are he's going to use Healmore and keep using it, basically forcing you to run, so make sure to kill him quickly and in two rounds, and if you don't, just hope you're lucky enough to get a third chance on him without him healing. **Stoneman** HP: 160 Gold: 140 EXP: 65 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – None Area – Charlock Castle Base Type - Golem Description: The Stoneman, found only in the last dungeon, is an extremely powerful enemy with a lot of hitpoints, so your best bet would DEFINETLY be to run away from him, and quick. Your only quest in Charlock should be to run from enemies while getting to the Dragonlord if you want to stay alive. Really. **Warlock** HP: 30 Gold: 35 EXP: 13 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – Sleep and Hurt Area – Fields around Charlock Base Type – Mage Description: The Warlock is a powerful enemy indeed. A modified version of the 'ol Magician, the Warlock has more hit points and is all around much stronger. He can also use two spells to boot. Often, he puts you to sleep the first round with Sleep, and then continuously casts Hurt on you until you wake up, and then repeat the process. Don't take him lightly... it can certainly mean your life. **Werewolf** HP: 60 Gold: 150 EXP: 40 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – None Area – Southern continent, towards the east Base Type - Wolf Description: The Werewolf is the strongest Wolf creature in the game, but he's still a joke, especially after the acquisition of the Erdrick equipment. He can't use any spells, so don't worry about that. Just take him out quickly and efficiently to avoid any trouble with him. **Wizard** HP: 65 Gold: 165 EXP: 50 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – Hurtmore Area – South continent towards the east Base Type - Mage Description: The Wizard is the strongest spellcaster in the game. He can put you to sleep, and he uses the powerful spell Hurtmore with the greatest of ease. Even his regular attacks do good damage. Be weary of this powerful spellcaster, don't dilly-dally when fighting him or he'll take your life pretty easily. **Wolf** HP: 34 Gold: 50 EXP: 16 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – None Area – Fields around Rimuldar Base Type - Wolf Description: The Wolf is basically a toned down Woldlord with less attack and defense power, no spell usage, and less hit points. Take advantage of his weaknesses to get easy gold and experience out of these guys, it should be very easy for you, better than fighting the annoying Wolflords. **Wolflord** HP: 38 Gold: 80 EXP: 20 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – Stopspell Area – Fields around Rimuldar Base Type - Wolf Description: The Wolflord is nothing to get worked up aboit, although his high quantity of hit points can make him a formidable opponent. The only spell he can use, Stopspell, allows him to silence your spellcasting abilities, but half of the time it doesn't even connect. Be more worried about his regular attacks, they can start to build up damage on you when you're chipping away at his hit points. **Wraith** HP: 36 Gold: 60 EXP: 17 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) - Heal Area – Fields around Hauksness Base Type - Skeleton Description: The Wraith is a much stronger version of the Skeleton, a Skeleton with an attitude, if you will. =) He has a stronger attack, more hit points, and can even heal himself with the spell Heal. Take him out quickly or pay the price. **Wraith Knight** HP: 46 Gold: 120 EXP: 28 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – None Area – Southern continent Base Type - Skeleton Description: Ha, and you thought the Wraith was hard. The Wraith Knight packs an EXTREMELY powerful punch. He hits for big damage and can heal himself to boot, and he does it often. Your best bet is probably try to put him to sleep and take him out with physical attacks thereafter. Don't be afraid to run from this guy, he can kill in a heartbeat, and that's no joke. **Wyvern** HP: 42 Gold: 100 EXP: 24 Special Attacks – None Spell(s) – None Area – Fields around Rimuldar on the coastline Base Type - Wyvern Description: The Wyvern, while not able to use any spells, is still a pain in the ass. You may think that what they have to say is pretty unimportant, and I'll be honest with you; some of it definitely is. But then there are some words that are very, very important. To make a long story short, you just might not want to read what the townsfolk say, and that's exactly what this section is for. I have recorded every word of every townsfolk in every town, village, and castle in the game and compounded it to this section, so you don't have to read anything in the game, you can simply refer to this section if need-be. Please keep in mind that there are town words for before you rescue Princess Gwaelin, as well as afterwards. This is because you are generally able to enter new areas after rescuing her, plus some townsfolk, especially at the castle itself, have new things to say. Here you can find a short list of questions and answers to common problems in the game of Dragon Warrior. The FAQ is here for your use, enjoy. 1.) Q: What's the best place to level up? A: As of right now, the desert below the Village of Kol, although I'm only on level 9 right now. I'll update this, naturally, in the next update. 2.) Q: I have a tip for you for an area, you didn't even know about it, what do I do? A: Well send it my way, naturally! If the tip is indeed valid, I'll post it on this walkthrough with your credit included, e-mail address and all. =) 3.) Q: You never mention saving in the guide at all, why? A: It's simple. I own all of the Dragon Warrior games on the NES system, and I play them often. However, I used an NES emulator (Famtasia), and played the ROM to write this walkthrough. It's just that much easier when you're on the computer. So for me to save, it's easy, I just save off of the browser. It should simply be common sense to save a lot. 4.) Q: If you die, what are the penalties? A: There are only two penalties if you die. One, you get half of your gold taken away from the time you died, plus you have to walk from Tantagel Castle to wherever you were at the time of your death, which can be very annoying on its own. 5.) Q: How come enemies are running away from me in battle? A: This is another common question, one that's equally easy to answer. Enemies are running from you in battle because basically you are –too- strong for that enemy! So they start running in battle sometimes. It doesn't always happen like that... I've fought a regular Slime at Level 30, but usually weaker enemies have a tendency to run away I'd say50%-75% of the time. Don't worry; it's perfectly natural. =) 6.) Q: What's the lowest level that you can legitimately beat the game on? A: I'd say around level 15 or 16, although I like to max out to level 30 before beating it. I've never actually done it on level 15 or 16, but I've read on the message boards that it can indeed be done. Give it a try if you'd like. =) 7.) Q: You mention not going to Inns in your walkthrough, but instead talk to the old man in Tantagel Castle. What are you talking about? A: Okay, here's how it goes. In Tantagel Castle, there is a guy, an old man, behind a desk to the right of the entrance all the way at the bottom of the outside of the castle. Talk to him and he'll refill your MP inconspicuously. Now you can use the Heal spell on yourself and then talk to him again to get your MP refilled, and repeat when necessary. Pretty nifty, no? Plus it makes it more convenient if you need to save with King Lorik at the castle, it's all in one place. Pretty damn cool if you ask me. =) 8.) Q: The Goldman is an awesome monster, I should fight him to get all of my gold, right? A: You could, but I wouldn't recommend it. While the Goldman is DEFINITELY good to get your cash supply up, he gives you only 6 experience points when you defeat him. By the time you get strong enough to actually fight these guys, 6 experience points is nothing. I suggest you fight other monsters as well as Goldmen, that way you raise levels evenly, otherwise you'll be stuck getting your ass beat by some hard enemies because you didn't level up, and you don't want that. =) 9.) Q: Torch or Radiant? A: Obviously you'll need to use the Torches to light up caves and dungeons before you learn the Radiant spell, but once you get the Radiant spell, why use Torches anymore? Sell any in your stock and don't buy 'em anymore, you don't need 'em anyway. 10.) Q: How come you never suggest buying regular items [tools] in your walkthrough? A: Because you really don't need 'em. Torches, Medicinal Herbs… those can be replaced by two spells; Radiant and Heal/Healmore. The Dragon Scale you SHOULD buy and equip, it raises your defense 2, but after that, don't buy anymore, they won't do anything. Wings are good to get back to Tantagel Castle, but once you learn Return (the spell), those become null and void as well. Hope that answers the question at hand. =) 11.) Q: What's the difference between the regular walkthrough and the quick walkthrough, both found in your guide? A: The regular walkthrough is an in-depth walkthrough generally made for people who want to find everything in the game, step by step. The quick walkthrough is designed for people who don't want spoilers and who are just stuck in the game but have a general idea of what to do. It's to help EVERYONE! 12.) Q: Does the swamp take away damage? A: Yes, 2 hit points per step. The only way to combat it is to equip Erdrick's Armor, and by the time you get that, the swamp's damage is measly to you, trust me. 13.) Q: Why don't you have Game Genie codes? A: Because I don't cheat. =) If you're looking for those, there are other walkthroughs on GameFAQs that have the Game Genie codes, and GameSages (www.gamesages.com) has many Game Genie codes as well. Go look there, have a field day. =P 14.) Q: What's the best weapon-armor-shield combination in the game? A: Erdrick's Sword-Erdrick's Armor-Silver Shield (with the Fighter's Ring and the Dragon's Scale equipped as well) 15.) Q: Speaking of the Fighter's Ring, what does it do exactly? A: The Fighter's Ring is absolutely optional to get, and it, when equipped, raises strength by 2 and speed by 2. Good stuff. 16.) Q: Should I equip the two Cursed items? A: No, absolutely not! Go sell them at a shop to earn some money. If you do happen to equip them, go to Brecconary and talk to the man there who'll cure you of the curse. You can't enter Tantagel Castle until a curse is lifted (if you're cursed in the first place), so make sure to get if lifted as soon as possible. Better yet, just don't equip the Cursed items and we won't have any problems! 17.) Q: What's with the critical damage I dish to enemies? A: Randomly, the game'll allow you to automatically hit an enemy you're fighting for critical damage, usually around 4 to 5 times more damage to the enemy then you'd usually deal. It's nothing to be ashamed of, be proud. 18.) Q: What level should I be at before challenging the Dragonlord? A: Levels 20 to 22. 19.) Q: How come I miss the enemy when I go to hit him? A: Like the critical damage, the computer randomly makes you miss enemies you are trying to hit.
