Characters & Special Moves 6. Credits --------------- 1.Introduction: --------------- This walkthrough/faq was written in an attempt to offer information about the game 'Captain Tsubasa 3'. There is more than enough information available on the web about the manga and anime series, but there still is a lack of info regarding the games based on them. I intend to offer as much help as I can,to those who might want information on beating the game or simply seeking to have fun with it. Now about the game, it's sort of an Rpg/Soccer game, featuring characters from the popular series, even if it takes place out of the series' timeline. Keep in mind, I know no Japanese, but this faq/walkthrough is based on both my knowledge of the Japanese series, and on the partial Spanish and English translations of the game. Good luck! -------------- 2.Walkthrough: -------------- --------------- 2.1 LEAGUE PLAY --------------- In this part of the game, we are introduced to several of the main characters, so we scratch the surface of various national league games. Of course, the focus is on TSUBASA and the Sao Paulo, which has ROBERTO as its coach, but we also receive foreshadowing for other players too... --------- Brazilian Cup --------- -------------------------- SAO PAULO VS. CORINTHIANS -------------------------- Assets of note: TSUBASA, BABIN, GIL. Opponents of note: SATRUSTEGUI, RIBEIRO. Difficulty: Easy as hell :) Being the first match, this is a rather cheap one. TSUBASA (or OLIVER for you Spaniards out there) is your team's only star, but the Corinthians aren't much of an opponent for him. Try to prevent SATRUSTEGUI (SARALG) from getting close enough to use his BLAST (C-DNAMITA) headshot, as your goalkeeper RENATO is impotent against it, by marking him with one or two players from your defense. RIBEIRO's BANANA kick is the other danger you must learn to protect from in this match. Use any other defenders you have left to prevent him from attacking. On scoring against the Corinthians, try to dribble past tough spots with TSUBASA, and use any of his moves for an almost sure goal at close range. BABIN and GIL also make good forwards, in case TSUBASA is unable to score on his own. This is a supremely easy match, I even kicked the crap out of the Corinthians once, 10-0, by relentlessly attacking the GK, but beginners might want to protect from SATRUSTEGUI's or RIBEIRO's counterattack. ------ French Cup ------ ------------------------- CHAMPS ELYSS VS. MONMARTU ------------------------- Assets of note: TARO, NAPOLEON. Opponents of note: SCHESTER. Difficulty: Err...a bit harder .P Ok, the heat's turned up a bit here. TARO, who with TSUBASA makes up the 'Golden Combination' and is also known as TOM, is playing with NAPOLEON in the Champs Elyss against the Monmartu. SCHESTER, Monmartu's main man, is truly a force to watch out for. He has no special shots, but his normal shots can injure even your best players, and his dribbles are tough to stop. Also, he can intercept passes easily with his SPIRAL passcut. I suggest you mark him with at least three of your defenders, and to be as aggressive as possible at getting ahead in the score. Use NAPOLEON's BREAKING dribble to rush through your opposition, and his CANNON (CAÑON) to penetrate the net. You can also use TARO, but it's easier for him to lose the ball than for NAPOLEON. If you use TARO, try to pass him the ball at medium height, when he's in the goalkeeper's area, so his JUMP volley can be available, for easy goals. Randomly, TARO and NAPOLEON start making passes between each other, but SCHESTER ends up intercepting the ball and counterattacking. Be cautious on the defense, but quick on the attack. Keep in mind that you will finish the match pretty evenly matched, 3-2 in my case, so be careful. ------- Mexican Cup ------- ------------------------------ CIUDAD DE MEXICO VS. MONTERREY ------------------------------ Assets of note: HYUGA, KEN. Opponents of note: CAPELLMANN Difficulty: Don't get blown away! Another difficult match here. Before the game, HYUGA and KEN (The great striker, STEVE and the great goalkeeper, RICHARD respectively.) are practicing penalty shots, when CAPELLMANN of Monterrey shows up. This guy loves to fool your defense by passing the ball to another player, and then receiving the ball when he's gotten close enough to your goal. When he uses the SIDE WIND (VIENTO) kick for the first time, KEN will automatically miss the ball, and it's a sure goal. I recommend that you prevent CAPELLMANN from even getting the ball by heavily marking him, and by using HYUGA constantly, both to score with his TIGER (TIGRE) shot, and to stop enemy dribbles with his TIGER tackle (BR-TIGRE). KEN is a great overall goalkeeper, with his SANKAKUTOBI (VOLADA) catch, in which he uses the goal posts as springboards to jump into the air to grab the ball, being an excellent tactic to prevent goals. However, at this point in the game CAPELLMANN's SIDE WIND shot poses a big problem, as KEN stops it sporadicaly. Using HYUGA's BREAKING dribble and with an aggressive defensive strategy, you might just beat Monterrey in time. You should get a pretty positive score, as in 4-2, thanks to KEN's above average ability. --------- Brazilian Cup --------- -------------------- SAO PAULO VS. GREMIO -------------------- Assets of note: TSUBASA, BABIN, GIL Opponents of note: DASILVA, MEAO Difficulty: You can relax a bit, but don't fall asleep. Finally, an easier game! (Mainly because you control TSUBASA again .P) This time, you face off against DASILVA and his goalie MEAO, who is good but not as much as KEN can be. DASILVA is pretty much a wimp without his STAMPEDE (A.ESTAMPIDA) dribble, which is hard to stop. As always, mark him heavily, but leave a few defenders behind. Watch out for MEAO, who may stop all normal shots, except for TSUBASA's CYCLONE (CICLON) kick. Randomly, TSUBASA does his CYCLONNE as soon as he gets the ball, this ends up injuring him somewhat, worrying coach ROBERTO. As this move is pretty draining, I have come up with a better strategy to overcome MEAO. Get TSUBASA as close as you can to the goal, to the point the goalie comes near, and do a normal shot. If timed correctly, MEAO will miss punching the ball outside of his area due to his positioning, and you will score. You can also do a HEAD LIFT (SOMBRERO) dribble, but MEAO is not likely to miss the ball then. If you use this tactic adequately, you will have no trouble getting at least a 2-0 against Gremio. ------- British Cup ------- ------------------------ YORKSHIRE VS. MANCHESTER ------------------------ Assets of note: MATSUYAMA. Opponents of note: KALTZ, pretty much the whole team too .P Difficulty: Ouch! That hurts! Here's another tough match for beginners. MATSUYAMA (ARMAND) is a good overall player, good at dribbling, defending, scoring, and anything you want. The problem here, is Manchester's star, KALTZ. As if his PORCUPINE (A.ERIZO) dribble wasn't enough of a bother, he and his fellow players just love to tackle you to death, injuring even MATSUYA in the proccess, and the rest of Manchester's offensive line up is nothing to sneeze at either. Their volleys and headshots can kick the crap out of your goalkeeper, plus they're good at dribbling too. The key to winning here, is to use MATSUYAMA's EAGLE (AGUILA) kick from a relatively offensive position, and to absolutely prevent KALTZ and co. from ever touching the ball. Try to tackle their defenders and midfielders to the point the strikers and KALTZ never recieve passes from them, and be aggressive with your own strikers as well. I managed to get a 5-3 against them, so don't get discouraged if you lose and have to replay the Gremio match again... ------ German Cup ------ ------------------------------ HAMBURGAR SV VS. BAYERN MUNICH ------------------------------ Assets of note: GENZO. Opponents of note: KARL, the Kaiser!!! Difficulty: Didn't Mom tell you to stop playing with fire? I think this is the second most difficult match in the first part of the game, and with good reason! GENZO, (BENJI for Spaniards and Italians) the best Japanese goalie, faces KARL HEINZ SCHNEIDER, the Kaiser of German soccer. Having the best (open to debate.) goalie you ever control in the 1P game is not enough to ensure you will win this match. KARL's FIRE (FUEGO) shot is automatically caught by GENZO the first time you see it, but the ball continues to move while in his grip... The next FIRE you stop will make GENZO confident enough to taunt KARL, but from then on you will see the real power of the Kaiser, as even GENZO will most probably get injured by the strength of his kick. Well guys, this match is pretty much a matter of luck. If you attack consistently, your pathetic strikers may just score, but don't expect it to happen too often. GENZO tends to catch KARL's shot now and then, but I wouldn't rely on him too much,especially at low levels. Keep the ball away from your goal, ok? Concentrate on the defense by marking KARL and any of his friends that annoy you. Counterattack quickly and efficiently using your strikers and midfielders. After many attempts, you may eventually get such a score as a 6-1, but remember, even I lost some sleep in the proccess. --------- Brazilian Cup --------- ---------------------- SAO PAULO VS. FLAMENGO ---------------------- Assets of note: TSUBASA, BABIN, GIL. Opponents of note: SANTANA. Difficulty: Hardest match yet. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the grand finale of the Brazilian tournament!! TSUBASA OHZORA vs. CARLOS SANTANA!! This is what I like to call the 'Test of Flame'. If you have become a seasoned player, congratulations, you may win easily! If not, I wish you luck in your struggle. SANTANA was trained by ROBERTO, your current coach, and he's not gonna let you win without a sweat. His MIRAGE kick can be used effectively from almost anywhere in the field, and I don't recall ever stopping his BUNSHIN (ESPECTRO) dribble in this match. TSUBASA has met his match, but don't despair. Using TSUBASA, you can punch a hole in Flamengo's defensive line up, but only he can exploit it adequately. The DRIVE (REMATE) kick isn't of much value unless you're at close enough range, so you will have to use the CYCLONE when you can't get near the goal. Preventing SANTANA from getting the ball, and scoring with TSUBASA should be your top priorities in this match. IT IS POSSIBLE TO WIN AT LEAST 5-2, JUST DO YOUR BEST!! ----------------- 2.2 STORM CALLING ----------------- After the game, TSUBASA and SANTANA shake hands, all while a mysterious goalie observes, and vows to stop TSUBASA's CYCLONE shot. Some time after this occurred, the Japanese national team is organized for a world tournament, the Universal Youth. Many great players are on the team, but the best are still being gathered from their leagues and clubs... The first phase of the tournament are the qualifying rounds, which include matches against regional teams like Korea and China, but also some foreign teams like U.S.A. and France. The matches start out pretty easy, and as time passes they get progressively harder, while better players arrive and enter your team. --------------- Universal Youth --------------- ---------- Qualifying Rounds ---------- --------------------- JAPAN VS. NETHERLANDS --------------------- Assets of note: MATSUYAMA,NITTA,MASAO,KAZUO,SAWADA,ISHIZAKI,VICTOR,SODA,JITO,SANO,MISUGI. Opponents of note: ISURASU, LIBUTA. Difficulty: Nothing to worry about. Ok, here we go. The newly assembled Japanese team has plenty of good players, MATSUYAMA (ARMAND),NITTA, (DAVID in Spanish) and of course the Tachibana brothers, KAZUO and MASAO. MATSUYAMA starts as captain, which I think he deserves in this situation. The team from the Netherlands is unrealistically weak, except for ISURASU and his KOUZOKU (RAPIDO) dribble, which really isn't much of a threat, either. Attack as much as you like, testing the abilities of yournew players. If you want, you can replace an injured player with MISUGI (ANDY), but only if it becomes necessary, as he's kind of injured himself (heart problem). Just be a bit careful of LIBUTA, who is a defender that likes to play rough. Trust me, your worst score probably will be about 4-2, and that's a worst case scenario. ---------------- JAPAN VS. FRANCE ---------------- Assets of note: Same as above, TARO. Opponents of note: BOSSI. Difficulty: Gimme a break... Now, if this was the real French team, I would be disappointed. Only BOSSI is of some threat to you, but nothing mayor here. Let's see if they fix this up later... Anyway, you get TARO (TOM, again) in this match, which makes it even easier. You should know the Japanese team's strengths and weak points by now, so go ahead and attack as you will. Mark BOSSI with some of your less useful players (the ones with no special abilities.) and you should be okay. Expect a 4-0 score this time. ---------------- JAPAN VS. U.S.A. ---------------- Assets of note: Same as above, HYUGA, KEN. Opponents of note: MIHAEL. Difficulty: Hmmm...it's harder alright, but... Well, again, you get new (?!) players before this game, so I would suggest replacing KEN (RICHARD) for AL as Gk (He's a wimp.) and HYUGA (STEVE) for anyone you aren't particurarily fond of. Now here's the catch. The U.S. team is really a rough guy team, that likes to injure your boys as much as possible. Another thing, the captain, MIHAEL (MICHAEL ?) has a ROSE DANCER dribble (try not to laugh.) which is VERY hard to stop, but not impossible. My suggestion is to evade him, and hope he doesn't getthe ball, or if he does, that he fails in his dribble. This can eventually become rather easy, again, a 4-0 shouldn't be too much trouble. ----------------- JAPAN VS. URUGUAY ----------------- Assets of note: Same as above, TSUBASA (finally!). Opponents of note: VICTORIANO, DASILVA. Difficulty: It's hard on the first try, but don't despair. Finally, we get TSUBASA back (yay!), and becomes the team captain instead of MATSUYAMA (boo!). You would think this makes the game much easier, but think again. VICTORIANO is a good player, and together with DASILVA (remember him?) he can do a special combination shot, PANZER(PANTERA) which tends to be a sure goal. I suggest you use the Tachibana brothers' GEMINI (COMBKOR) combination or TSUBASA's and TARO's GOLDEN COMBI move to quickly get past the Uruguayans. and then use one of the forwards to score. Be aware that DASILVA's STAMPEDE dribble still is rather effective, so prevent him from getting the ball. And lastly, make sure VICTORIANO never has a chance to use the PANZER, as it's hard to stop. With some effort, you will get a 5-1 or so, once you master this match. ----------------- JAPAN VS. BELGIUM ----------------- Assets of note: Same as above. Opponents of note: RAMCANE. Difficulty: Hope you injure the goalkeeper, or else. =). This certainly can be truly hard sometimes. The team from Belgium really sucks, except for its goalie. RAMCANE is very good at what he does. You name it, EAGLE, FALCON, TIGER shots...they all tend to miss. TSUBASA can score sometimes, but don't waste too much energy/guts doing the CYCLONE shot unless you are close enough. I suggest to usethis tactic again: get your striker as close as you can to the goal, to the point thegoalie shows up, and fire at him. If timed correctly, he may have misplaced his SHADOW SHIELD catch, and you will score. Again, this may not work always, but its one of the best strategies for tough goalies like this one. Other than that, don't worry about the enemy team. Call me crazy, but I ONCE got a 5-0 on this match (luck happens). --------------- JAPAN VS. KOREA --------------- Assets of note: Same as above, but you lose HYUGA (damn!). Opponents of note: KIMU, SHA. Difficulty: Slightly easier than the last match. Bad news for HYUGA fans, he gets mad and leaves the team. Now this is interesting...KIMU and his partner SHA like to do TWIN shots pretty often, and as you would expect, they're good. To complement this, SYA really likes to use the BREAKING dribble, and you may have trouble stopping it. My advice, mark them and don't let them use the TWIN (GEMELO) shot, and attack aggressively. Without HYUGA, it might be harder to score, but TSUBASA'S and TARO'S own TWIN shot will be a nice help in this match. My score was, coincidentially, 5-0 again. --------------- JAPAN VS. CHINA --------------- Assets of note: Same as above, but still no HYUGA. Opponents of note: LEE HANNE, LEE BANKUN, LU. Difficulty: Another hard one, if you don't know what you're doing. If you do, it's a piece of cake. Well, these Asian teams sure are hard, aren't they? (might as well expect that from the creators of the series...just kidding.) LU, the goalie, just loves to kick back anything you shoot at him, so again, it's hard to score at low levels. LEE HANNE and LEE BANKUN have combination headshot SHURYOKYKU (LAMONTADA) that while not really threatning is veryannoying. HOWEVER, there's a trick to win this (and with an excellent score!!). Dedicate as much effort as you can to attack the goalie's net with the "get near the goal and then shoot up close" strategy, and this match will be extremely easy. After a lot of dedication, you will get even an 8-0 in this match, so keep up the good work! --------------------------- 2.3 AFTER CALM...THE STORM! --------------------------- After the match against China, Karl appears to challenge the Japan Youth team, which has qualified for entry in the tournament. As for the next opponents... Think England and the U.S.A. look hard enough? Think again. Coming up next, the hardest matches in the game, and the trick to winning them. Do Italy, Argentina, France, Brazil and Germany ring any bells? I knew they would. The Universal Youth tournament continues... --------------- Universal Youth --------------- ----------- First Round ----------- ----------------- JAPAN VS. ENGLAND ----------------- Assets of note: Same as above, plus GENZO (yay!!). Opponents of note: ROBSON, LORIMAR Difficulty: The British Empire needs some serious backup :) GENZO joins before the match, making it extremely easy. ROBERTO notices that TSUBASA is having difficulty with the CYCLONE shot...Anyway, England's main asset is ROBSON (MONTGOMERY) , who uses the BREAKING dribble, POWER block and POWER tackle. Oh yeah, LORIMAR has the REBOUND (REBOTE) shot, which GENZO should be able to catch quite easily if you are at a good level. Simply try to avoid ROBSON while you massacre the English goalie :P If you have any difficulty, try changing SAWADA for MISUGI, but don't overuse him as you'll want to use him later. I expect you to get at least a 5-0 against the Brits. ------------ Second Round ------------ ---------------- JAPAN VS. U.S.A. ---------------- Assets of note: Same as above (but read on..) Opponents of note: MIHAEL (yawn.). Difficulty: Not much more than a bother. This match, even before it starts, is filled with rivalry between ISHIZAKI and MIHAEL (I'm not making this up!) . Laugh all you want, but the annoying MIHAEL's new ROSE BUSTER shot actually poses a threat to GENZO. During the match, ISHIZAKI learns the MONKEY BUSTER shot (he's gone bananas.) ; I dare you to find ANY decent use for it. The North American Youth team still is rather violent, but it is surprisingly easy to get past their defense. For a laugh, try injurying MIHAEL. If you lose this match, get a few more levels. The Japan Youth team (even ISHIZAKI!) earns MIHAEL's respect when you win. This match (I don't know if it deserves to be called a match, really.) can be won even 10-2 , for real! ----------- Third Round ----------- --------------- JAPAN VS. ITALY --------------- Assets of note: Same as above, HYUGA (AWESOME!). Opponents of note: RAMPION, HERNANDEZ. Difficulty: They'll teach you a thing or two about manners. Meet Gino Hernandez, the second best goalie in Europe. I'm not kidding, he can actually stop NEARLY EVERYTHING you send his way, and with one hand no less! Even the CYCLONE! In truth, TSUBASA has been unconsciously hurting himself by repeated use of the CYCLONE; his leg is in terrible shape. (This explains why the CYCLONE seems weak in this match.) Try and survive 0-0 until halftime, when TSUBASA passes out. SAWADA volunteers to fill in, but whines about how they can't win without TSUBASA. Luckily, HYUGA'S BACK!!! He brings with him the LIGHTNING TIGER shot, which is one of the best in the game. With it, you can score at least once, even if your level is low. Focus on preventing RAMPION from scoring with his ROCKET (COHETE) headshot. The GOLDEN HAND (MANO DE ORO) is an excellent catching move, but even weak shots, at high levels though, can be effective against it. Hope you can get a 4-0 in this tough match. ------------ FOURTH ROUND ------------ ------------------- JAPAN VS. ARGENTINA ------------------- Assets of note: Same as above, minus TSUBASA... Opponents of note: DIAS, SATRUSTEGUI, PASCAL, BABIN, PASCAL, GALU. Difficulty: Easier than what you'd usually expect from the Gauchos. Before the match,"Soccer Prodigy" DIAS will challenge TSUBASA, who isn't fit to play. DIAS is a good all-around player, but his ZENTEN shot can really annoy you. With HYUGA back, you should be able to win without much trouble. Thank God that Argentina doesn't have a good goalie, or this would be MUCH more difficult. PASCAL's a just a good striker, nothing else. At halftime MISUGI enters the field as support. However Argentina kicks off, DIAS soon gets the ball, automatically using ZENTEN. GENZO may or may NOT catch it, to TSUBASA's despair or relief. Oh yeah, I believe you will remember your old friends, SATRUSTEGUI (and his BLAST headshot) and BABIN. Send 'em back home with a 7-0. -------------- QUARTERFINALS -------------- ---------------- JAPAN VS. FRANCE ---------------- Assets of note: Same as above, plus TSUBASA (he's baack!). Opponents of note: PIERRE, NAPOLEON, BOSSI. Difficulty: Don't let your guard down... First of all, TSUBASA's back, and he's learned the NEO CYCLONE (SUPER CICLON), apparently from watching DIAS's ZENTEN...NAPOLEON (remember him?) and PIERRE are France's main stars, and can do the EIFFEL combination, which is like the Tachibana brother's GEMINI combination. PIERRE's SLIDER shot can be combined with NAPOLEON's CANNON shot into the SLIDER CANNON twin shot, but you should be able to stop it by now. BOSSI's mainly here for support. Try to use TARO's and TSUBASA's OVERHEAD twin shot; it's one the best shots in the game. KARL & Co. are watching your performance though... I don't expect you to have too much trouble here; you can easily get at least an 8-0. ---------- SEMIFINALS ---------- ---------------- JAPAN VS. BRAZIL ---------------- Assets of note: TSUBASA, HYUGA, TARO (if you're not at high levels.). Opponents of note: SANTANA,COIMBRA,NEI,TONINHO,ZAGALO,SANTAMARIA,DIRCEU,GERTIZE,JETORIO. Difficulty: I guess this IS historically accurate :) You know you have a tough situation in your hand when Tsubasa, instead of the coach, starts speaking in the meeting. Bad news folks; the Brazilian Youth is here to brutalize you all. SANTANA (he's baack!) and COIMBRA are an excellent combination, and you'd wish you could trade GENZO for GERTIZE (and his DARK ILLUSION catch.), because he's certainly a better goalie. Extremely tough, but not impossible. Concentrate TSUBASA, HYUGA, and TARO on the offense, because they are the ONLY ones who can score, So try to conserve their guts. ALL the rest of the team SHOULD defend if you hope to survive. SANTANA congratulates TSUBASA when it's all over. A really close match; my best score is a 3-1. ----- FINAL ----- ----------------- JAPAN VS. GERMANY ----------------- Assets of note: TSUBASA, HYUGA, TARO (if you're not at very high levels.). Opponents of note: KARL,MEZZA,MARGUS,CAPELLMANN,KALTZ,SCHESTER,MÜLLER. Difficulty: Gross. ROBERTO, SANAE, SANTANA, MIHAEL and HERNANDEZ await the kickoff. Ladies and Gentlemen, the Universal Youth finale! The Kaiser's NEO FIRE shot is almost impossible to block. MÜLLER is THE best goalie in the game, period. And look at their levels! 61?!! You should be at about 57 right now, so expect to lose a few times to build up. Even if you match their level, it's still really tough. Here's the lineup sent in by Video Game Addicted Person (thanks!): (using a 4-3-3 formation) 11: TSUBASA 10: MISUGI (make sure he can play!) 9: HYUGA 8: MASAO 7: TARO 6: KAZUO 5: MATSUYAMA 4: JITO 3: SODA 2: ISHIZAKI (2~4 doesn't really matter, you could switch them around) 1: GENZO Okay, know let's think about it. TSUBASA, HYUGA and TARO are the ONLY ones who have any chance of scoring against MÜLLER, so ONLY use them for shooting. Everyone else should mark KARL HEINZ SCHNEIDER. He should NEVER get the ball, and if he does, take it away before he can even do anything. If KARL manages to use his NEO FIRE shot, use MASAO's, KAZUO's, JITO's and ISHIZAKI's super blocks in hopes that they will weaken the NEO FIRE shot enough that GENZO can block it. To get past the German defense, use MISUGI, MATSUYAMA, MASAO and KAZUO. Using this strategy, Video Game Addicted Person managed to get a 5-2, at level 61. TSUBASA will faint at halftime, and the rest of the team decides not to replace him, in hopes that he will recover later, which he does. Personally, I once got REALLY lucky and managed to beat them 3-1! ---------- THE ENDING ---------- Okay, now here comes the ending. Everyone on the team celebrates. KARL congratulates TSUBASA and GENZO for their victory. ROBERTO and KATAGIRI discuss about TSUBASA's future. Then the credits scroll up, together with a picture of most of the game's stars. At the very end, it stops with a color-changing screen, while super deformed Captain Tsubasa characters chase each other from side to side. And now you are supposed to hit reset :) If your game's sram or battery backup is working properly, you should now be able to use all the special moves in the All-Stars and 2P Modes. Woohoo! -------------- 3.Hints & Tips -------------- -A good defense is a good offense. If you're getting whipped by the other team, try to concentrate your efforts on the attack and counterattack. Be sure to use the best strikers and midfielders available. -Never overestimate your goalie. Even if he's the best in Japan, there's always a chance he'll miss the ball by an inch. Try to prevent the opponent from ever reaching your goal. -Use tackles to stop dribbles, cuts to stop passes, and blocks to stall your opponents. -Don't get discouraged if you lose a game, you'll probably level up after you replay your previous match. This really helps you in difficult situations, like against SANTANA and the Kaiser. -There are several so called "secret" shots and moves in the game, that can be accessed in different ways. They seem to be activated either when you are in a 1 vs. 1 encounter (ex: only TSUBASA vs. KARL.) or when your guts or energy are at a certain level. Some of the super shots I've seen include KARL doing some kind of FIRE shot during a volley kick, when TSUBASA beats back the ball when a striker makes a super shot, a stronger TIGER shot for HYUGA and KEN's "finger extension", which he seems to do when he is angry. (is this the true name of the move?). TSUBASA's shot seems to be activated by blocking, but this doesn't work consistently. Oh, by the way, during the final match in the game, TSUBASA may learn a new ability, but I haven't been able to use it due to his lack of guts/energy. -Luck plays an important role in the game. If your best shot is missing at point blank range, or your ace goalie misses a shot from the worst player, don't despair! Many times, you need to be lucky to score against certain goalies, like HERNANDEZ or MULLER, and to stop certain shots, like HYUGA's LIGHTNING TIGER (or DRAGON in Spanish translatoin.) kick or one of the many TWIN (GEMELO) shots. -I have been informed that, by using the save/load state option in emulators, you can get lucky enough to score impossible shots or prevent a certain goal. I believe this is cheating somewhat, as it drains the challenge out of the game. Do it at your own risk. -Use strikers to attack, and defenders to defend. I can't stress this enough. Strikers are good at scoring, but defenders are the best at stopping dribbles and shots. There are some exceptions, like HYUGA and MATSUYA, who can be good at any position, but this doesn't apply to pure defenders like JITO (VICTOR) and ISHIZAKI (BRUCE). -I believe injuries do decrease your player's overall effectiveness. As you progress through the main game, new players and moves become available in the 2P mode. For example, HERNANDEZ only gets his GOLDEN HAND (MANO DE ORO) move when you manage to beat his team Italy in the game, and VICTORIANO can only use his PANZER shot after you make it past Uruguay and are using DASILVA in your line up. The game's battery backup (Save states won't do folks.) must have a saved game at the appropiate point in the game to access the new features. You can even make your own dream team for 2P play, such as having MULLER and TSUBASA on the same side! A real shame, that you can't build up such a team in 1P mode, you are limited to making your team from its already existing members, such as switching HYUGA for SODA (GUILLE) in the striker position. In 2P mode, you can even make your own all-star European team, and have it face off against an all-star South American team if you want. This option is appreciated mostly during real-life play, which I have witnessed not too long ago, but I suppose it's too much of a hassle to enable it in emulators. You can try though... -------------- 4.1 Statistics -------------- This contains some of my favorite line ups, as well as a rankings. I didn't include the Japanese all-stars since that's team you have to use in the game anyways.
