Understanding the Maps 100% Special Thanks -------------------------------------------------------------- Introduction: -------------------------------------------------------------- In 1992, Halken released the game "Card Master: The Seal of Rimsalia". This game combined the first-person perspective with traditional story-focused console RPG elements and an innovative card-based 'theme'. This RPG was quite good, and soon "translated" into English as "Arcana". This "translation" ruined the game. Many things were removed and changed for the US version. Menus became less pretty, the story became less defined and detailed, the characters became cookie-cutters, and the spirits became ressurectable party-members instead of distant elementals. Items and spells were cut from the US version, and a great deal was changed - largely because the differences between English and Japanese made trnslation of many sections of the game impossible. However, the "trans- lation" team was not proficient in either language, and the result was - while still a good game, not nearly as refined as the original. Monsters lost their mythologicl names, references to religion were cut, and grammatical errors appeared everywhere, along with cheesy dialogue and the unshakable feeling that someone along the way missed something. This FAQ is compatible with both the US and Japanese versions, and will seek to point out the differences in the script as it walks you through the game. This way, an English-speaking player can play the original to see all the aesthetic differences between the two, or play the US version and see all the chagnes in the script. And even if neither of these appeal to you, it will still help you play through the game, and provide information from both a "slow game" perspective and a "run-through" perspective, allowing someone to beat the game at their own pace or rush through it - without missing anything - to beat the final boss at a relatively low-level. This FAQ also uses Japanese text in UTF-8 encoding. If you see garbage, install Japanese text support in your web-browser,a nd don't view it in non-Japanese friendly environments. IE and Notepad work wonderfully. -------------------------------------------------------------- File History: -------------------------------------------------------------- File started: 6-14-2k2 First release: 6-16-2k2 - Approximate completion: 10% -------------------------------------------------------------- Story: -------------------------------------------------------------- [script here] -------------------------------------------------------------- Characters: -------------------------------------------------------------- descriptions and background soon PARTY MEMBERS ------------- Rooks - Card Master | Rooks - Cardmaster | 繝ォ繝シ繧ッ繧ケ縲? - 繧ォ繝シ繝峨?繧ケ繧ソ繝シ縲? First, try leaving the town; you'll be stopped by Alan and Tifa. [script here] Now that Tifa is in your party, you need to outfit your party. You have 500 GP, so go to the armory and Rooks a Short Sword and Tifa some Soft Leather & a Whip. Don't bother buying Tifa anything better than this; she's only a temporary member. Save up for a Longsword or Broadsword for Rooks, and a Small Shield & Ring Mail, but don't worry too much about it for now. When you're ready, head out to the Temple with Tifa as your guide. PLACES OF INTEREST 1.Tavern "If you get some recruits [Japanese/Transaltion coming soon] come back to town and get them outfitted." "It's just a rumor that the spirits are loose." "You look fit. Are you in battle training?" 2.Armory Weapons - See "Armory - Weapons" and "Armory - Other" Dagger | + 8 ATK 100 GP Short Sword | +19 ATK 200 GP Long Sword | +31 ATK 500 GP Broad Sword | +44 ATK 1000 GP Staff | +15 ATK 150 GP Whip | +21 ATK 170 GP Soft Leather | + 7 DEF 100 GP Hard Leather | +11 DEF 300 GP Ring Mail | +15 DEF 500 GP Robe | + 9 DEF 150 GP Small Shield | + 3 DEF 180 GP Talisman | + 3 DEF 300 GP Items - see "Items / Cards" Herbs | Medicine | Sleeping Bag | Return Ring | Silver Flask | 3.Mystic - see "Items / Cards" 4.Inn - 30 GP room 5.Outside DUNGEON: Balnia Temple 1F 1 - Herb 2 - Silver Flask 3 - 300 GP 4 - Sleeping Bag 5 - 500 GP * - Stone Guardian This level of the dungeon is very easy. All enemies are Earth-based except the Lizards, so make use of Sylph's Lighting and Change Attribute spells to give yourself an easy time. I suggest going straight for the 5 treasures - beware that the enemies in the back half or so of the dungeon are stronger - and then going back to town for a stay at the Inn and a save. Also pick up a Ring Mail for Rooks, and if you have the cash, a Small Shield or Broadsword (you can trade in your old equipment for half-price). After you're restocked and ready, it'll be time to take on the Stone Guarder - don't bother levelling up here. +--------------------+ |BOSS: Stone Guardian| Use Sylph's Change Attribute spell to make +--------------------+ Rooks and Tifa Wind-element, and then use |Element: Earth | physical attacks to take down our friend the |HP: 150 RLvl: 3 | Golem. He won't do too much damage, and you |EXP: 15 GP: 100 | should kill him in a few short turns. An easy +--------------------+ first-boss, so relax and enjoy the music. If you haven't already, go back to town and pick up a Ring Mail for Rooks. You might need it on level 2, since the monsters are harder and Sylph won't be much use. DUNGEON: Balnia Temple 2F 1 - 500 GP 2 - Herbs 3 - Silver Flask 4 - Sleeping Bag 5 - Return Ring * - Iron Guardian Pick up the 5 treasures, and if you're having trouble here, you might want to use the Return Ring to go back to town instead of walking. The monster encounter rate picks up SIGNIFICANTLY in the middle third of this dungeon, so don't go for the boss until you're ready. If you feel you should gain some levels, map out one or both of the high-encounter areas - you'll be attacked almost every other step, so don't skimp out on the healing magics. With the money from the chests and random encounters, you should be able to upgrade Rooks's weapon to a Broadsword - do this before you take on the boss, Iron Guarder. +--------------------+ |BOSS: Iron Guardian | Same deal as with the Stone one - use Sylph's +--------------------+ Change Attribute and then wail on him. The |Element: Earth | fight will be over before you know it and you |HP: 300 RLvl: 7 | won't even need to bother healing afterwards. |EXP: 30 GP: 100 | +--------------------+ After the Iron Guarder, there are no enemies, so I suggest continuing on to the door and the plot advancement, unless you really need some supplies from town. Otherwise, continue on until the door. [script here] You'll then enter a crystalline chamber. There is a sword sealed inside and a dwarf and a priest are waiting for you. [script here] Tifa flips out and paralyzes the two, then leaves your party and takes the sword. [script here] Alan will kill your Spirit in one blow, then he and Tifa will take turns beating on you. Every hit will halve your HP until you're in the single-digits. But the priest wakes up and summons a dragon to chase them off. [script here] Rooks loses consciousness, and then it's on to chapter 2! -------------------------------------------------------------- Chapter 2: Reinoll the Elder | Wise Man Reinoll | 縲瑚ウ「閠?Ξ繧、繝弱?繝ォ縲 -------------------------------------------------------------- Rooks regains consciousness in the care of a priestess.
