I'm writing this guide to help out with the SMS FAQ Completion Project on GameFAQS. Basically we are trying to have a complete FAQ for every SMS game ever released. Follow this links to learn more: http://glacoras.net16.net/SMS_CP/ http://www.selmiak.bplaced.net/sms/ Before I began writing this FAQ, I'd never played Galactic Protector. Imagine my surprise then when I saw Opa Opa from the Fantasy Zone series whizzing about. Though this is a bit of a departure from the main series, this is a pretty cool game nonetheless. Sort of like Asteroids but at the same time nothing like it. If you would like to see any more of my work, then follow this link: http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/76852.html That's all then, let's go! -TrulyDexterous _____________ _____________ \ /| |\ / ) |¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯| ( / | 4) P l a y i n g T h e G a m e | \ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|______________________________________________________|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ C o n t r o l s ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ 1..............Fire Left......Move Left Right....Move Right This game is supposed to be controlled using the Paddle Controller. However, should you play this using an emulator such as Meka, you can do without the controller. I've played the game using an emulator (obviously I own an original copy of this game) and it works fine. When you move left, you will be stopped at the bottom of the planet. When you move right, you will be stopped again. Basically, you can't move past the bottom of the planet, it's like there's a wall stopping you. This means you will need to go all the way around. D e f e n d i n g Y o u r P l a n e t ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ At first it will just be yourself (Opa Opa) and your planet against the universe. You may think moving back and forth around the planet wilding firing would be a good tactic. I would advise against this in the early stages. When you first begin, you will have a slow rate of fire and only single bullets. Firing randomly around the planet isn't a good idea with such limitations. Until you get the upgrades, you should go for a different tactic. You need to wait for threats to make themselves apparent then quickly move to take them out. You should aim to destroy targets in one or two shots. If you start firing clusters of bullets, this will cause you to lose time, thus leaving the planet at risk from other threats. Once you have reached the third stage, you will get the second upgrade. This will allow you to fire three bullets at once. Three bullets will make a massive difference to your capabilities of defending the planet. At this point your tactics can change. The idea of wildly firing through the air becomes more appealing now that you will have three times more bullets flying through the air. I would hesitate to say that you should just randomly fire, but you can afford shoot even if there is nothing to shoot at. Don't forget though, there will probably be specific threats that you will still have to deal with. I will look briefly into the the behaviour of enemies. As a general rule, enemies will do one of two things. They will either move directly for the planet or circle around it as though caught in gravitational pull. If the enemy moves directly for the planet, you need to shoot it out space as soon as possible. The more time you give it to move towards your planet, the harder it will be neutralize. Should the enemy take a circular path around the planet, just stay in a single position and hammer the 1 button. This will create a line of bullets that the enemy will smash into. Sometimes the threat will increase when the enemy circles round, but gets closer to the planet at the same time. You should make it a priority to take this out. In even the later rounds, the enemies will move towards the planet and then move out again to trick you. However, you shouldn't worry about this too much because you should be able to crush any threats with your triple-fire. H e a l t h ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Planets will have 10 bars of health. Every time your planet is hit, it will lose a single bar of health. All enemies will cause one bar of damage. Once all of these bars have been depleted, the planet will blow up and you will get the Game Over screen. Your goal is to keep the planet alive until all the threats have been cleared. This usually takes a couple of minutes or so. It doesn't really matter how much health the planet has remaining (well it matters to your score) as long as it is still alive by the end of the stage. At the beginning of the next stage, your planet will receive a fresh 10 bars of health. Opa Opa's health is not directly related to the planet. You will begin with three lives and once these are gone you will get the Game Over screen. When you first start the game, you may think the the planets health is more important than Opa Opa's. This isn't really the case. Although it is important to keep your planet alive, it will be able to sustain a few hits before this happens. However, Opa Opa can only take one hit before dying and he only has three lives in total. It all depends on your situation. If your planet is on 10 bars and an enemy is just about to hit it, then you should let it happen. However, if it is only on one bar and you can only stop the enemy by crashing into it, then you should take the loss of life to avoid a Game Over. One major reason to keep Opa Opa from dying is the upgrades. If you lose a life, any upgrades that you had will be lost. This is particularly hard to deal with in the latter stages, where this is a LOT of debris flying around. U p g r a d e s ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Upgrades come in the form of a white circle making it's way towards your planet. Touch these with Opa Opa to receive them. The upgrades differ depending on which round you receive them on. The first upgrade is available on Stage 2 and it will increase your fire-rate. The earliest you can get the triple-fire is Stage 3. If you lose a life, any upgrades that you collected will be lost also. There are three upgrades: • Increased fire-rate. This means you can fire more bullets-per-second (bps). • Triple fire. This means three bullets will be fired when you press the 1 button. • This is pretty unclear, but I think this upgrade will increase the speed that Opa Opa can move. Once you receive this upgrade, you will see the bubble follow Opa Opa around. Possibly I could be wrong with this one, so if that's the case, please get in touch. After you have the three upgrades, any further upgrades won't take effect. T h r e a t s t o Y o u r P l a n e t ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Most threats and enemies are pretty generic and they all pretty much do the same thing. ASTEROID : The Asteroid is a brown rock. Sometimes it will move directly for the planet, but most of the time it will circle around at speed, before slowly moving in. POINTS: 150 BLUE SPHERE: Hit the Blue Sphere and a Moon will emerge. You will then need to shoot the moon also. These often appear in groups and will perform a "sequence" before moving in on the planet. You won't get any points for shooting the Sphere. CLUSTER : An Asteroid, a Moon and a Saturn held together by a bubble will float towards the planet. You need to shoot this as early as possible. This will break the bubble and two of the objects will shoot to either side and one will stay in the middle. Shoot the one in the middle straight away before moving to deal with the others. In later rounds, the Cluster will circle the planet. POINTS: 400 MOON : A small, yellow round moon. On occasion they will appear by on their own but mostly they emerge from Blue Spheres. POINTS: 50 ROTOR : These are circular objects with blades on them. They will circle around the planet before moving in. You need to shoot them whilst they are still circling. When they reach the planet, instead of merely crashing into it, the Rotor will move around and try to take out Opa Opa. You should concede the damage to the planet and try to protect your spaceship. POINTS: 1000 SATURN : Looks like a mini-version of the planet. Acts much the same as an Asteroid or a Moon. POINTS: 200 S c o r i n g ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Aside from the points you get from destroying certain enemies, you will also get a Defence Bonus at the end of every stage. This equates to how much health your planet has at the end of the stage. For every bar of health, you will get 500 points. If you get a perfect round with 10 health bars at the end of it, you will get a 10,000 point bonus. R o u n d s ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ There are three planets that you will need to defend (one per round). There are a total of 25 rounds, meaning you will have to defend each planet numerous times. The order is Earth, Saturn, Jupiter. 1) An easy-ish introduction into the game. You will be defending the Earth. There are no upgrades on this rounds. Try not to blindly shoot into space. Instead, you should pick your targets and take them out as quickly as possible. 2) Probably the hardest round in the entire game. You are woefully under- powered here to deal with all the threats. Though you will get the first upgrade, it won't be enough to help you significantly. This is the only round that I should need to give a walkthrough for (see below). 3) Jupiter. On this round you will finally get your hands on the triple-fire. This will make this and every following round much easier. Just wildly fire in the rough direction of anything moving towards your planet. After this, the rounds aren't repeated, though you will have to defend the same planets over again. I can't really give you a step-by-step guide through these and you don't really need one. Just try to hold onto your upgrades (by not dying) and shoot anything that moves. S t a g e T w o W a l k t h r o u g h ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Two blue spheres will move in and you should quickly take them out. Soon after this two Moons will attack the planet at pace. They will come at 2 and 7 o'clock. Position yourself to take one out and move to take the other out if you have time (if not just leave it to hit the planet). Two Saturns will appear from 12 and 6 o'clock quickly move to shoot them. After, this a Blue Sphere will appear at 3. Shoot it and another will appear at 12. Two more will come at 9 and the 6. You should easily have enough time to deal with these. An upgrade will now approach at 3. This is will increase your fire-rate, which should help you out (a little) for the rest of the round. A couple of Saturns and Rotors will rapidly appear on screen. Make the Rotors your priority, but watch out for thE Saturns also. Soon two Blue Spheres will join in but you can deal with these. Six objects will next move in on the planet. It would be very hard to shoot all of these. Instead, focus on the Blue Spheres (because they will hurt your planet twice) and do the best you can with the others. It's likely that you will take 2-3 hits here. This isn't ideal, but it should leave you with a few of bars of health leading into the final part. Two Clusters will approach the planet. Shoot one and then the other straight after. You should now try your best to deal with the debris. Hopefully you will take enough out to stay alive (you will probably take a hit or two). After this there are a couple of Asteroids to deal with before the end of the round. This walkthrough certainly won't get you through with a perfect score. However, it should help you navigate what is in my opinion the hardest round in the game. _____________ _____________ \ /| |\ / ) |¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯| ( / | 6) C r e d i t s | \ ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯|______________________________________________________|¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ T h a n k Y o u s ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ • GameFAQs for hosting this. • You, for reading my FAQ. • The SMS Completion Project.
