This game, made for the Sega Master System, was developed by Probe Software and was released in 1992 by Acclaim Entertainment inc. Twentieth Century Fox owns the copyright to Alien3. I did not see the movie and I do not own the game on the SMS. Therefore, I do not know the plot of the movie and no instruction booklet was available to me for the writing of this FAQ. As such, objects and characters will be identified as they appear on the screen. On to the game… Apart from the intro screen, there is no backstory leading up to the beginning of the game. However, if you are patient, credits will start to appear and, soon after, a TOP 10 high scores list. This is followed by a short demo. The intro screen also displays the options of starting the game or configuring some parameters. Choosing configure brings up the following menu : Start : Starts the game Continue : Permits the selection of the number of continues available. The number is set at 0 by default and I was unable to change this number. Players : Toggles between one and two players when you press the X (1) button. Music : Pressing the X (1) button toggles the choice between ON and OFF. Sound effects : Pressing the X (1) button toggles the choice between ON and OFF. So, basically, the most useful feature of the options, the number of continues, seems to be disabled. Way to go Acclaim. Thank goodness for emulators. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 2- Display =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The main display screen shows Ripley (I presume) at its center. At the top is an icon with a number. The icon will vary according to the item which is being used. The number represents either the amount of an item you have in your inventory (ex. ammo or fuel), remaining health or remaining energy. If you just stand around for a few seconds, the top display shows your score. To my knowledge, apart from making it to the high score list, points are of no use in this game. At the bottom of the screen is a timer. Obviously, this represents the amount of time you have left to complete the level. If you do not reach the safety zone in the allotted time, you lose a life and any remaining prisoners will experience an exploding chest. Yeah, I also loathe having time restrictions when it comes to getting somewhere in a game. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 3- Basics =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ============================================================================= 3.1- Controls ============================================================================= Since I ran the game on an emulator, I’ve no information for the SMS controller. Instead, I used a PC gamepad. Its configuration was as follows : DIRECTION PAD : Pressing left or right on the Direction Pad permits you to go in that direction. Pressing down makes your character duck. When in front of a ladder, you can go up or down using the D Pad. SELECT : Not used. START : Pause/unpause. X BUTTON (1/START ON SMS) : This button is used at the start screen to start the actual game. During the game, you fire your weapon by pressing it. A BUTTON (2 ON SMS) : This button is used to jump. This jump is barely half your character’s height, but more than twice that height horizontally. Pressing down and A (2) scrolls through your weapons. ============================================================================= 3.2- Weapons and items You obviously need an array of weapons to combat the aliens. Your chosen weapon is active when its icon is displayed at the top of the screen. Here they are : Machine-gun : Your basic weapon. It is active when the displayed icon is a green magazine. Tapping X (1) once fires one bullet. Keeping X (1) pressed puts the machine- gun in full automatic mode with a continuous spray of bullets until you release the button. This weapon shoots in the direction you are facing and upwards when standing on a platform. It can shoot up and downwards when on a ladder. If it shoots up-left or up-right, it does not appear to be reliable. Plus, your character moves in that direction, which negates any advantage of taking out the aliens without having to walk beneath them. Its range reaches the edges of the screen from your position. Power-wise, it requires three bullets to down a regular alien. The maximum number of bullets you can have is 200. Flamethrower : It is active when the displayed icon is a barrel shooting fire. Each tap of the X (1) button costs one fuel point. This weapon shoots in the direction you are facing. It cannot be used while on a ladder. Its range is just in front of Ripley. Power-wise one fuel point is all it takes to eliminate a regular alien. Explosive gun : It is active when the displayed icon is an explosion with a bullet. Each tap of the X (1) button uses one bullet. There is no automatic feature for this weapon. This weapon shoots in the direction you are facing. It cannot be used while on a ladder. Its range reaches the edges of the screen from your position. Power-wise, it requires one bullet to kill a regular alien. Grenades : It is active when the displayed icon is a hand holding what looks like a green canister. Each tap of the X (1) button tosses one grenade in the direction you are facing. Its range is almost to the edge of the screen. A regular alien can be terminated by one grenade’s explosion. Battery pack : It is active when the displayed icon is a battery. You start the game with 200 energy. That is the maximum. I am not sure what its use is. However, when it is selected, pressing the X (1) button brings up a radar that looks like crosshairs at the bottom of the screen. Any white blips on this radar are moving aliens. Not very useful, as far as I am concerned. Health : It is active if you take some damage. The icon is a red cross on a white background. You start the game with 100 health points. Note : When you lose a life, you restart the level. However, you retain all of the pickups accumulated before dying. ============================================================================= 3.3- Item Pick-ups ============================================================================= You collect items and power-ups by touching their icons. These icons are scattered throughout the levels and represent the following items/power-ups : Machine-gun ammo : The icon looks like three white cylinders with a red stripe. Picking this up gives you 100 bullets. The max you can have is 200. Flamethrower fuel : The icon looks like a flame in a red square. Picking this up gives you 10 flamethrower fuel and 10 explosive ammo rounds. Explosive ammo : The icon looks like a stack of eight bullets, two rows of four. Picking it up gives you 10 explosive ammo rounds. Battery : The icon looks like a battery. The maximum energy is 200. Health kit : The icon is a red cross on a white background. Picking this up adds 20 to your health. Grenades : The icon looks like three small blue and green cans. Keep in mind, this icon can easily be lost in the background. Picking this up adds 5 grenades to your inventory. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 4- Walkthrough =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Onto the walkthrough. My plan is to get you through these levels as quickly and efficiently as possible. I do not know if this game has any side quests or whatnot, but I am not worrying about getting them done. ============================================================================= 4.1- Level 1 ============================================================================= The opening screen for the level indicates the number of lives remaining (3 to begin with) and that there are six prisoners to rescue. You have 3:02 to complete the level. Go left and pick up the machine-gun ammo. Go right and pick up the flamethrower fuel. Keep going right and eliminate the alien. Continue right, get on the ladder and immediately get back off on the left. An alien will come from the right and fall down the ladder hole. Go right, across the ladder, and pick up the machine-gun ammo. Continue going right. You’ll see an alien fall down a ladder hole. Follow it down that ladder. Eliminate the alien and rescue the two prisoners in this area. By the way, take a look at that prisoner icon that appears at the top. Kinda has a Hunchback of Notre-Dame quality to it. Go back up the ladder and head left. Go down the next ladder. Pick up the explosive ammo. Go left, eliminate the aliens and pick up the battery. Go back up the ladder. Go left. Go down the next ladder. Wait for the moving platform to come up on the left and ride it down to the bottom. Eliminate the alien that comes at you when you get off the platform. Go left and pick up the machine-gun ammo. Go up the ladder, rescue the two prisoners and pick up more machine-gun ammo. Go down the ladder and return to where you got off the moving platform. Ride the moving platform to the top and get off on the platform. Go right, land on the ledge and pick up the health pack, if you need it. As you move towards the door, an alien climbs up to the platform and comes at you from the left. Destroy it and go through the door. Jump across the gaps and rescue the two prisoners as you go. There is a hole in the wall to the right of the last platform. This is an access to the ventilation shafts. Get in. Go right. You’ll immediately see an alien. Kill it. Go right to the T and then up and right. Exit the shaft and pick up the machine-gun ammo. Jump to the right and land on the lower platform. Go down to the left and kill the two aliens. Continue down the ladder. Kill the next alien on this level and go right to reach the safety zone and end the level. ============================================================================= 4.2- Level 2 ============================================================================= There are six prisoners to rescue. You have 4:02 to complete the level Obliterate the alien to your left. Going right nets you some machine-gun ammo, but beware the alien that appears on the ceiling. This type of alien seems to take more hits to explode. If you don’t want to spare the time, just go up the ladder. Go left, kill the alien and rescue the prisoner. Now go right, past the ladder, kill the alien that appears and go up the second ladder. Go up one platform and move left until you go up one step. Fire at the alien you see in order to keep it away from the ladder to the right of the step. Go up to the top of this ladder. Eliminate the alien that drops down on the left and go in that direction. Kill the alien that drops from the ceiling. Now pick up the health kit and the explosive ammo. Keep going left to rescue two prisoners. Go right. Go up to the top of the ladder, pick up the machine-gun ammo and move right towards the next ladder. Go across this ladder and immediately hit jump so as to avoid the aliens which are hidden in the ground (see their blueish arms?). Being handled by these aliens costs you 5 health when you are slammed to the ground. Keep going right to another ladder and go down. You will see machine-gun ammo and a health kit. Beyond these are two alien pods and a prisoner. Destroy the pods and rescue the prisoner. Go back up the ladder and go left. Jump over the hidden aliens, pass the ladder and go down the next ladder to the left. (You can go down the ladder next to the hidden aliens, but they will handle you as you pass beneath them. Also, sliding down the slopes costs you 6 health each as you hit the bottom). Go all the way down, go right, pass the ladder and jump the gap. Keep going right to pick up the machine-gun ammo and flamethrower fuel. Ignore the alien and go back left to jump the gap and go down the ladder one platform. Go right and jump the gap. Careful how you time your jump – you do not want to fall down the ladder hole past the gap. Rather, land on its left and look past the ladder, at the ceiling. There is a hidden alien that intends to molest you as you pass beneath it. Shoot in an up-right direction as you move across the ladder. Once it is hit, the alien will fall to the platform and move away from you. Finish it off and go right to the next ladder. Go all the way down and enter the ventilation shaft to the right. Once in the shaft, go right past the ladder and enter a small room. Pick up the flamethrower fuel and rescue the prisoner. Go back left and down the ladder. Go right to another small room and rescue the prisoner. Once again, go back left and keep going in that direction until you reach a second ladder. Go down and right until you leave the shaft. Keep going right to reach the safety zone and end the level. ============================================================================= 4.3- Level 3 ============================================================================= There are 11 prisoners to rescue. You have 4:01 to complete the level. Go down the ladder to your left. Go left, jump the gaps all the while picking up the machine-gun ammo and flamethrower fuel. Go right and jump the four gaps leading to the ladder at the extreme right. Go down the ladder and go left while jumping four more gaps. Grab the machine-gun ammo and rescue the prisoner. Go down the ladder to the next platform. Go right and jump the gap. Pick up the explosive ammo and rescue the prisoner. Going back left, jump the gap and continue down the ladder. Once at the bottom, go right and into the ventilation shaft. Reach the ladder and go all the way down. Continue following that path until there is a ladder going up. There is an alien waiting at the top. If you go up and get off the ladder just as the alien falls down the ladder hole, you will not receive any damage (15 points) for coming into contact with it. Continue going right and exit the shaft. Go up the ladder and ignore the prisoners next to it for now. Once at the top, go right and climb the ladder to the next platform. Go right and up another ladder to rescue three prisoners. Go back down the ladder, go left and down another ladder. Left again and down another ladder. Go down just past the ceiling and then fall off the ladder on its right. This frees three more prisoners. Once you hit the bottom, taking some damage (5 points), go right and ride the moving platform to the top, thereby rescuing another prisoner. On the way up, you should shoot the alien that is hanging on the right wall, so that it falls down to the floor where you will finish it off later. Do not get off the moving platform. As it goes down, jump off to the right and rescue the prisoner as you fall to the floor, where you will again take damage (5 points). Finish off the alien and pick up the health kit. Get back on the floating platform and ride it again to the top. Jump off to the right and continue on into the ventilation shaft. Go right and down the ladder. Go slowly down to the intersecting corridor, dip down below the ceiling and immediately go back up the ladder a bit. This triggers an alien to the left. It will pass beneath you and go to the right of the ladder. Once it is past, go down to the bottom and to the right. Go down the next ladder to the right and then go left to exit the shaft. You will be in a small room that contains an alien and a prisoner. Waste the alien and rescue the last prisoner of the level. Go back into the shaft and go all the way to the right, exiting the shaft. Continuing right ends the level. There should be about 2:00 left on the clock. ============================================================================= 4.4- Level 3.1 Boss fight This boss fight involves taking on a huge alien in a relatively tight space. The area looks like a room with a vaulted ceiling which accommodates the alien’s movements. A low corridor is present on both sides of the room. It is obvious that the alien cannot enter the corridors. Therefore these spaces can serve as safety zones. However, the alien emits projectiles which are angled in a low path that reaches into the corridors. Touching the alien or getting tagged by a projectile causes 15 points of damage. Just go full automatic on its hide and it’ll go down in little time. You may take only one or two hits during the exchange. ============================================================================= 4.5- Level 4 ============================================================================= There are 6 prisoners to free. You have 5:20 to complete the level. The décor changes to some sort of torture facility, with an orange background and what can be either human or alien corpses hanging from chains. Start off by eliminating the alien that falls on your right, then go left to pick up the machine-gun ammo. Another alien will fall on your left. Rub it out. Take the ladder all the way to the top. Pick up the health kit and eliminate the alien that falls on your left. Continue picking up items (flamethrower fuel x2, machine-gun ammo and battery). Jump to free the first prisoner of the level. Go back to the ladder and descend one platform. Slowly advance to the right and immediately start to shoot when you see an alien hop towards you. Kill it and jump to free the prisoner. Keep going right and up the ladder. This is a tricky part. You need to jump three times to the right, over the ramps and onto the small platforms in between, until you reach the bottom. Once at the bottom, notice a moving platform that is embedded in the floor. Stand on it and press up to activate it. Once at the top, jump to the left, on the platform from which hooks are hanging. Now jump to the right, on the top platform. Pick up the machine-gun ammo, the flamethrower fuel and the grenades. Keep going right and go down the ladder. Get the health pack and free the prisoner. Now go back up the ladder, go left and make your way to the edge of the platform. Jump your way across the platforms until you reach another moving platform that is immobilized. Jump on it and press down to activate it. The platform will quickly move to the left. Do not move while on the platform, so as to not fall down onto the ramp. When the platform stops, get off and go down the ladder. Go left and all the way down the ladder. Head right and pick up the grenades. Keep going right and get on the moving platform. Ride it all the way to the top and walk off to the right. Advance slowly to the right and take out the alien that comes at you. Continue right and go down the ladder. As soon as you’ve passed below floor level, drop to the left off the ladder. An alien will come out of the ventilation shaft. Help it get into alien heaven and go left to enter the shaft. Go down the ladder and then to the right. Exit the shaft and you will fall down the ladder hole. Go right and descend two ladders. Once at the bottom, pick up the health kit and flamethrower fuel. Also, rescue the prisoner. Go back up the two ladders and go left until you drop off the platform. You will land next to a moving platform. Ride it up and jump off it to the left in order to free a prisoner. Keep going left and get on the moving platform. Ride it to the top, walk off to the left and enter the ventilation shaft. Go left to the ladder and head up to the top. Go right and pick up the machine-gun ammo as you poke your head out of the shaft. Head back left and go all the way down. Go right to exit the shaft. Advance slowly to the left and eliminate an alien. Keep going right, go through two doors and send another alien into oblivion. Reach the ladder on the right and go up. Go right once more and up another ladder, all the way to the top. Go left and free the prisoner. Go right to end the level. ============================================================================= 4.6- Level 5 ============================================================================= There are 6 prisoners to rescue. You have 4:50 to complete the level. This level looks like a bunch of stacked subway cars. Go right and eliminate the alien that drops from the ceiling. There is an alien hidden in the floor, near the column. If you are lucky, it will drop down to the lower level when you shoot the first one. Keep on to the right, pick up the machine-gun ammo and waste the alien that pops out of the ceiling right before the double doors. Two more aliens will show up. Greet them adequately. Go right and get on the moving platform. Ride it all the way down and free the prisoner. Get back on the platform and go up one level. Get off to the left and send the alien you meet to a better place. Go down the ladder, to the next level, and pick up both the health kit and the battery. Free the two prisoners you encounter. Go back up the ladder and go left. There is most likely an alien behind you. Ignore it and get to the moving platform. Get on and immediately get off to the right one level lower. Free the prisoner. Go right and down the ladder one level. Pick up the explosive ammo. Continue down the ladder to the bottom and take another ladder down. Go left and free the prisoner. Go right and up the ladder. Go right and free the last prisoner. Go to the extreme left and up the ladder for one level. Go right and get on the moving platform. Ride it all the way down and go left to take the ladder down. Pick up the machine-gun ammo, the flamethrower fuel and the health kit. Go left and eliminate the alien. Keep going left and enter the ventilation shaft. Once in the shaft, go left and down the ladder. Shoot downwards while on the ladder so as to move the alien away from the bottom. Go right, eliminate the alien and exit the shaft. Go through the door and turn around to kill the alien that drops from the ceiling. Jump up on the step to the right and waste another alien. Going right, you encounter three more aliens, two of which drops from the ceiling. Go right to end the level. ============================================================================= 4.7- Level 6 ============================================================================= There are 10 prisoners to free. You have 6:10 to complete the level. It looks like you are back in the torture installation. Also, some of the aliens are now able to throw projectiles, like the boss of level 3.1. Start by blasting the alien pod. A new twist has hatchling alien jumping out of the pod and coming at you. Blast it as well. Walk a bit to the right, kneel and shoot. A hidden alien will fall to the lower platform. Go down the ladder, eliminate the alien and free the prisoner. Go down the next ladder to the left, shoot the pod and destroy the hatchling alien. Now grab the explosive ammo, grenades and machine-gun ammo. Go back up the ladder, go right and then up the next ladder. Keep going right and drop down to the lower platform. Go left and down the ladder to rescue the prisoner. Return up the ladder and go right. Jump off to the right and grab the flamethrower fuel that is on a small platform. Now get on the moving platform and go to the top. Jump off to the right and jump again to the next platform. Eliminate the alien to go forward and rescue the prisoner in this alcove. Return left and drop down to the very bottom of the area. Make your way right, taking out an alien, before going down the ladder. Free a prisoner on the way down to the bottom of the ladder. Go down the next ladder to the left and drop down to the right as soon as you are below the floor. Upon landing, turn right to waste the alien that falls from the ceiling. Next, go all the way left to rescue a prisoner. Next, go all the way right, help another alien on its way to Nirvana and rescue another prisoner. Go left and back up the ladder. Go left again and up the next ladder. Two aliens waiting to ambush you at the top. Wait for them to go left before emerging and taking them out. Proceed left and another alien will drop from the ceiling. Send it along with its brethren and go down the ladder. Go left and eliminate the alien. Keep going left, jump onto the moving platform and ride it to the top. Drop off to the right and free the prisoner. Go left, jump the gap and enter the ventilation shaft. An alien will exit it as you enter. Ignore the creature, go left to the ladder and down until you see the alien waiting at the bottom. Shoot downwards so it gets out of your way and follow it to the right, out of the shaft. Free the prisoner. Here’s another tricky part. Get on the moving platform as it is going up and jump off to the right before it reaches the bottom. You should land on a platform which leads down some stairs. You’ll encounter an alien falling from the ceiling and be able to rescue a prisoner. Go left and back up the stairs. Get to the edge of the platform and toss a couple of grenades in the pit. There should be two aliens in there from the upper platforms. Boom! Boom! Bye, bye! Drop into the pit and get onto the left-most moving platform. As soon as it starts moving upwards, jump off to the left to reach the platform. Go left and drop off this platform to grab some flamethrower fuel, machine-gun ammo and a health kit. Next, go down the ladder to score some more machine-gun ammo and some explosive ammo, as well as to rescue the last prisoner. Now, let’s end this one. Go right, up the ladder and onto the moving platform. Jump off to the right when it reaches the top and continue going right. Drop into the pit and get onto the left moving platform. Up, at the next platform, get off to the right and keep going to reach the ladder. Go up and right again to the next ladder. Go down and right, all the way to the end to complete the level. ============================================================================= 4.8– Level 6.1 Boss fight ============================================================================= Another boss fight with an over-sized alien that still shoots projectiles. However, this one is a little more active and has quite a bit more room to move around. The room, though, is basically the same as the first boss fight, where you have two small corridors at each end. The challenge here is the alien’s constant jumping around while you attempt to tag it. Plus, you only have 1:20 to achieve this takedown. Once again, just go full automatic on its hide and this fight will take all of 20-25 seconds. Maybe as little as 10 seconds if you stand under the alien, while it is on the platform, and shoot upwards. ============================================================================= 4.9– Level 7 ============================================================================= There are 8 prisoners to free. You have 5:40 to complete the level. This level looks like a series of catwalks interspersed with platforms. It seems to be more vertical than the previous levels. Begin by taking the ladder upwards. Just poke your head out of the floor, so as to get the alien to jump to the right. Go slightly down the ladder and let the alien pass. Let it continue to the right before going up to the top of the ladder. Pick up the flamethrower fuel and machine-gun ammo. Rescue the prisoner. Go back down the ladder for one level. Go right and waste the alien. Don’t worry about what looks like holes in the catwalk, these are just cosmetic. Go up the next ladder and go right once more. Go up the ladder to rescue a prisoner and then all the way down the same ladder to grab some machine-gun ammo and free two more prisoners. Go back to the ladder and up one level. Go left and down the ladder, to the bottom. Go right, eliminate the alien that drops from the ceiling and rescue the prisoner. Go left and down one level on the first ladder. Go right, slaughter another alien and rescue a sixth prisoner. Go back to the ladder and go to the bottom. Go right and get on the moving platform. Ride it all the way down and go left. Pass the ladder and eliminate the two aliens that drop from the ceiling. The easiest way is to pass the first one and let it drop to your right. Turn around and shoot it while moving to the right, thereby pushing it in that direction while the second alien comes from the left. This buys you some time to waste the first alien before turning around and assaulting the second one. Once this is done, go all the way left and rescue the prisoner. Return to the right and go down the ladder. Go quickly down past a room that contains an alien and reach the bottom. Go left and up the next ladder, to the top. Get the health kit and explosive ammo. Rescue the last prisoner. Go back down the ladder for one level and grab the grenades and flamethrower fuel. Go left and face another tricky part. There is an alien hidden in the ceiling right next to where the moving platform goes down. If you get on the moving platform and ride it down, the alien will fall down upon you. To avoid this, get on the platform and ride it down to just below the floor. While this triggers the alien, jump back up onto the edge of the floor. Wait for the moving platform to come back up and now ride it down to the bottom. Once there, be prepared to splatter three aliens. If you move to the right at a slow pace, you should only have to deal with one of them at a time. And if you really take your time, the third one might never show up. Go up the ladder at the end of the corridor. As you pass the first level up, an alien will drop into the small room on the second level and prevent you from safely passing through. Time to exercise a little patience (besides, you should have about 3:30 left on the clock). Stay on the ladder, below the level of the second floor, and shoot upwards when the alien passes above you. Keep at it until the alien shines in its absence. You may now go safely to the top of the ladder and then onto the moving platform. Once at the top, get off to the right and continue to end the level. ============================================================================= 4.10– Level 8 ============================================================================= There are 7 prisoners to rescue. You have 5:40 to complete the level. This level has the same look as level 7. Grab the machine-gun ammo and take the ladder to the bottom. Go right. An alien drops from the ceiling as you approach the ladder. Stop moving as soon as it drops. Just waste it and then move forward as another alien drops from the ceiling behind you. Eliminate the newcomer. Keep going right and then down the ladder. Shoot the alien while you are on the ladder. Once at the bottom, grab the machine-gun ammo, the flamethrower fuel and the health kit. Continuing to the right, rescue a prisoner. Head back left and go down the ladder. One level down, get off to the right to erase the alien pod and its hatchling from existence. Rescue the prisoner to the right. Go back left and destroy the second alien pod only if you feel like it (this will avoid the presence of a hatchling later on). Otherwise, just head down the ladder. At the bottom, slowly go left so that the alien hidden in the ceiling falls down, off the platform. Now go to the edge. You can now wait for the moving platform to make its way up to you and then ride it down. I was impatient and just dropped through the hole and directed Ripley to the right to land on a platform above a pit containing two aliens. Go to the right, ride a moving platform to the top in order to grab some grenades and rescue a prisoner. Drop down to the lower platform and then into the pit. Eliminate the aliens and rescue the prisoner. Get on the moving platform, ride it up one level and jump off to the left. Grab the health kit and continue left. Go down the ladder to waste the alien pod and hatchling. Rescue the prisoner. Return to the ladder and go up two levels. Get off to the left to pick up the machine-gun ammo, the flamethrower fuel and the explosive ammo. Continue left to destroy the alien pod and hatchling and then rescue the prisoner. Return to the ladder and go up. Stop before you reach the top. Shoot upwards to eliminate the alien before emerging on the platform. Go left and get on the moving platform to go upwards and rescue the last prisoner. Going right nets you flamethrower fuel and explosive ammo. Time to end this level. Go left and drop down the hole. Go right and down the ladder for two levels. From here go right and either jump into the pit to wait for the moving platform or try to get on it as it passes by. Ride the platform to the top and get off to the right. Climb the ladder to the top and do the same with the next ladder to the left. At the top, just go right to reach the safety zone and end the level. ============================================================================= 4.11– Level 9 ============================================================================= There are six prisoners to rescue. You have 5:50 to complete the level. Though there is a lot of vertical movement, the look of this level does not change from the last as you start on a small platform to the top-left. Jump to the right to pick up machine-gun ammo, a battery, flamethrower fuel and a health kit. Drop down to the left, then jump right and rescue the prisoner. Go down the ladder, ignore the alien that falls from the ceiling and continue down the next ladder to the left. At the bottom, take the next ladder down, but do it slowly and step off to the right as soon as you are below the floor level. This avoids triggering the alien on the left until you are ready. Go left, shoot the alien and go down the ladder. Going down one level nets you exploding ammo and grenades. Go down the ladder to the right and be ready for a tricky section. Here, there is a prisoner right below the platform you are standing on. There is also a moving platform which goes down below the platform. Simply jumping on the moving platform brings you down into a pit where you will encounter an alien. The solution is to time your jump down as the platform is coming up. This prevents your falling in the pit and enables the rescue of the prisoner as the moving platform comes up and you step off of it. Make your way to the left, jump the gap and continue down the ladder. Stop before you reach the bottom. An alien will pass below and go back to the right. As it disappears to the right, jump to the bottom and ambush the alien as it comes back. Go right, all the way to the ladder and up and rescue the prisoner. Do not go higher than the prisoner’s former position. An alien is waiting on the platform above. Drop off to the right and climb the ladder to the right to a height greater than the next prisoner and drop off to the left in order to rescue him. As you reach the bottom of the room, immediately turn around and waste the alien which will fall from above the ladder. Now go back up the ladder, to the top. Jump the gaps to the left, get to the ladder and climb it to the top. Get off on the left, so as to avoid the alien that is falling from the platform. Eliminate the alien, go right and up the ladder to the top. Go left, to the moving platform and get on. Ride it to the top and get off to the right. Advance slowly as an alien rushes towards you. Give it some lead and continue right to the ladder. Go all the way down, then to the right and jump the gap. Go up the ladder, go right and then down the next ladder to rescue a prisoner. Go back up the ladder, go left and down the next ladder. Continue left and drop down the gap. Again, continue left and go down the ladder. Get off to the left on the next level down. Go right and up the ladder to rescue the last prisoner. Go back down the ladder, go left and then down the next ladder. Proceed downwards slowly so as to let an alien pass beneath you and go back to the right. Once the alien is gone, drop off to the left and go right to confront it. Continue to the right, get on the moving platform and ride it to the top. Get off to the right and get on another moving platform. Also ride this one to the top and get off to the right. Continue right and down the ladder. Once at the bottom, you have the leisure of waiting for the moving platform to arrive on the right. Otherwise drop down the hole and take some damage before moving right and completing the level. ============================================================================= 4.12– Level 9.1 Boss Fight ============================================================================= You start off at the top left and have 2:20 on the clock to complete this battle. The giant alien starts in the top right corner. Drop onto the moving platform and ride it down to the bottom. Get off to the left and move in that direction, near the corridor. It won’t be long before the alien joins you on the ground. All it takes is a couple of shots before this sucker starts to sputter and blow up. IN my case, there was 2:08 left on the clock. ============================================================================= 4.13– Level 10 ============================================================================= There are 12 prisoners to rescue. You have 6:10 to complete the level. Whoopee! New décor! You are now in some purple caves. Nothing else has changed. Go right and pick up the grenades. Go back left and down the ladder. Go down one level and get off to the right. Eliminate the alien that drops from the ceiling and continue right. Go up the ladder and rescue the two prisoners at the top. Go back down the ladder and slowly make your way to the bottom. Two levels down, an alien will drop out of the ceiling. Waste it while staying on the ladder. Then go to the bottom and right to rescue a prisoner. While you are performing the rescue, an alien drops to the floor of the level above. When it has run to the left, go up the ladder and prepare for its return. Kill it and go left to the next ladder. Go down and drop off to the left as soon as you are below floor level. This permits you to rescue a prisoner. As you continue dropping, direct Ripley to the small platform on the left. Grab the battery and jump to rescue the prisoner. Drop off to the right and continue until you get to the next ladder going down. Be careful, as an alien will jump through the wall and attack you (you are also able to go through that wall). Go down the ladder and go right. As soon as you pass the tight space (Ripley crawls), jump (you don’t see it, but there is an opening in the floor) to the right to rescue the prisoner. Now drop down through the floor and go right to rescue another prisoner. As you drop to the bottom, throw a grenade at the alien you see to the right. Watch it go ka-boom. Switch to another weapon as you continue right and eliminate another alien. Next, go all the way to the right and pick up the health kit, flamethrower fuel and grenades. Go back left and up one level on the ladder. Get off to the right and rescue the prisoner. Get back on the ladder. Let the alien pass to the right before getting up to the top. Get off to the left and ambush the alien as it comes back. After eliminating the alien, go left and rescue the prisoner. Next, go all the way to the right and pick up the machine-gun ammo. Now go back left and up the ladder. Climb up till you are next to the prisoner and drop off to the left to rescue him. This also triggers an alien on the next level up. Go back up the ladder and stay upon it while wasting the alien. Once the alien is gone, make your way to the top of the ladder and rescue the prisoner. Continue to the right. You cannot distinguish it very well from the background, but there is a ventilation shaft. Enter it and move to the right and then up the ladder, to the top. Next, go left and up another ladder. Be careful as you reach the junction. An alien will run across it. Wait for it to pass to the left before following it. Go all the way to the left and exit the shaft. Go left to the ladder and down one level. Go right, through the wall (yes, this could have been done earlier…) and rescue the last prisoner. Go back left, to the ladder and down. Continue down the next ladder to the left. At the bottom, go left through the wall and down the next ladder. Go right, drop through the floor and go left. Proceed in that direction to complete the level. ============================================================================= 4.14– Level 11 ============================================================================= There are 17 prisoners to rescue. You have 6:02 to complete the level. This level seems to be a repeat of level 10. Go to the right to pick up the flamethrower fuel. Go left and down the ladder for one level. Go left and right to rescue two prisoners. Return to the ladder and go down another level. Get off to the left and eliminate the aliens on the right. Rescue the prisoner. Return to the ladder and go all the way down. Go to the right to rescue another prisoner. Return to the ladder and go up one level. Get off to the right and waste the alien. Go down the ladder and drop off to the right in order to rescue three prisoners. At the bottom, go left and eliminate the alien by shooting through the wall. Now go through the wall yourself to grab the health kit and to rescue a prisoner. Return to the right and go all the way up the ladder. Get off to the right and continue forward slowly as an alien falls from the ceiling. Obliterate it and continue onwards as another alien falls behind you. Turn around and waste that one too. Go up the ladder to the right and rescue the prisoner. Go right and down the ladder. Go right once more and up the next ladder. Be careful as you climb to the top – an alien drops from the ceiling and goes left. Now go to the top. The alien will not move and makes a perfect target for shooting practice. Rescue the prisoner. Again, go right and up one level on the ladder. Now left, through the wall and left to the end. Go down the ladder and rescue the prisoner. Return up the ladder and go right, through the cave wall to the top of the next ladder. Pulverize the alien that comes at you from the left and go in that direction. Eliminate another alien on the left side of the cave wall and go through the same wall. Go down the ladder and rescue the prisoner. Now go left, through the wall and rescue another prisoner. Go back through the wall and up the ladder. Go right, through another wall, and down the ladder. At the bottom, go down the next ladder on the left. Go all the way to the bottom, turn to the right and waste the alien that drops from the ceiling. Go left and rescue the prisoner. Go down the ladder and go right to rescue another prisoner. Next, go left, past the ladder and turn right to eliminate the alien that falls from the ceiling behind you. Continue going left and crawl through the wall to the next room. Still going left, as you make your way through the wall, an alien will fall from the ceiling in front of you as another falls behind you. You cannot really avoid damage here. So just waste them and continue left. A third alien falls from the ceiling. Dispatch him as you did the others. Rescue the prisoner by getting onto the slope to the left. This is where I realize I cannot go up to the platform and get the last prisoner. Oh, well. There is still 3:05 on the clock. Plenty of time to backtrack a little. Go down the slope and to the right. Walk through one wall and, further right, hop down through another. Climb the first ladder you reach to the top and climb the second ladder for two levels. Get off to the left and go up the ladder. Continue left and go down the next ladder. Once at the bottom, go right to restock your machine-gun ammo by picking up two icons and rescue the last prisoner. Oh, boy! Still 2:40 on the clock! Go all the way left and drop down. Remember this place? Go to the right, through two walls, and up the ladder. Continue all the way to the right to end this level. ============================================================================= 4.15– Level 12 ============================================================================= There are 18 prisoners to rescue. You have 5:40 to complete the level. Once more, you are in those purple caves. Go right to grab the machine-gun ammo and health kit. There is also some flamethrower fuel a little more to the right. Go up the ladder next to the fuel and rescue two prisoners. Go back down the ladder, go left and down the next ladder. Go left and through the wall to rescue a prisoner. Return through the wall on the right and rescue another prisoner. Keep going right to rescue a third prisoner on this level. Go right and pick up the health kit. Return to the left and go down one level. Go right and jump to rescue a prisoner. Continue right and go down the ladder. Drop off to the left as soon as you are below the floor and rescue the prisoner. Walk to the left and jump to rescue another prisoner. Once more, walk to the left and hop to rescue a third prisoner in this area. Keep going left and walk through the wall in order to pick up some explosive ammo and to rescue another three prisoners Go back right, walk through a wall and make your way to the ladder. Go down and left to pick up grenades and machine-gun ammo. Keep going left to rescue a prisoner. Now go right, past the ladder and rescue a prisoner that is in the wall. Return left and go up the ladder for one level. Go through the wall on the right and rescue a prisoner. Keep going right to rescue a second prisoner. Continue right, through another wall and rescue a third prisoner. Now go up the ladder to the top and rescue the last prisoner for the level. In order to reach the safe zone, go down the ladder to the bottom and go left through two walls. Go up the ladder, to the top. Go left to the next ladder. Go up, left again and up another ladder. Go all the way right and into the ventilation shaft. Once inside the shaft, go right past the first ladder. As you reach the second ladder, an alien will come down and go right. Ignore it. Also ignore the second and third ladders and exit the shaft. The alien you ignored is there with another alien. Waste them both. Now move slowly because two more aliens will drop from the ceiling. I burnt them to a crisp with the flamethrower (there isn’t time to use the machine-gun if you want to avoid damage). Continue right to end the level. ============================================================================= 4.16– Level 12.1 Boss Fight ============================================================================= Yippee! Purple cave boss! You have 1:50 to win this battle. This boss level is loaded with girders, blocking paths and acting as platforms. If you have enough health, which you should, go right, to the edge of the platform you begin on. Jump to the right, on a platform that is beneath a rock overhang. This alien boss bounces around a lot, but will not get under the overhang. This does not mean that you are completely safe, since the alien does throw projectiles (two at a time for this one) and they will damage you. However, if you keep shooting at it every chance you get, it will not last very long. I had 1:22 left when it started sputtering. ============================================================================= 4.17– Level 13 ============================================================================= There are 5 prisoners to rescue. You have 6:40 to complete the level. This level is loaded with platforms and crumbling catwalks. Plus, there are some conveyor belts. Also, aliens are more resistant and are not thrown backwards by machine-gun fire. Furthermore, some shoot projectiles. This can be quite a pain in the buttocks. It seems that after a relatively easy game thus far, Acclaim has kicked it up a couple of notches. Start by grabbing the machine-gun ammo and the health kit. Immediately go back to the left. There is an alien that comes from the right and falls on the platform next to the health kit. However, because you use it, the catwalk crumbles and the alien, as it comes for you, falls through it to a lower platform. Jump the new gap, go right past the ladder and jump across to the next platform. Change to the flamethrower and go right and be prepared to roast an alien as it falls from the ceiling and rushes across the catwalk. Cross the catwalk and burn another alien out of the game. Keep going right as a third alien comes at you. Make it feel the heat of your resolve. Next, grab the flamethrower fuel, grenades, machine-gun ammo and health kit. After this bounty, jump to rescue the prisoner. Return left, go down the ladder and make the alien that comes at you extra crispy. Continue left and rescue the prisoner at the edge of the platform. Go back right, all the way to the edge, and ignore the moving platform. Jump to the platform on the right and then go down the ladder before jumping to a platform on the left. This platform is situated between two slides. Jump to the next platform on the left. Pick up the flamethrower fuel, explosive ammo and health kit. Also be prepared to cook the alien that comes at you. Continue all the way to the left and up the ladder. Drop off to the right to rescue the prisoner. Once you hit the platform, switch to explosive ammo and go down the ladder to your left. Don’t go down too quickly, there is an alien prowling at the bottom. Once it leaves the screen, go down and blow it to bits before it rears up to shoot at you. Go right and rescue the prisoner. One left! Keep going to the right, drop off the platform as you move to the left so as to land on the platform under the one you’ve just come from. Go all the way left and to the edge of the platform. Wait for the moving platform and ride it down to rescue the prisoner. Now to get to the safety zone! Go to the right, jump the gap and pick up the explosive ammo and a health kit. The catwalk you just crossed crumbles and disappears. Go to the left edge of the platform and drop off while pushing right to land on the platform beneath the one you just came from. Go right, past two ladders, and pick up the machine-gun ammo and health kit. Now, go down the ladder just to your left and walk right through the door. Wait for the moving platform (you have plenty of time – I had 4:45 on the clock) and ride it to the top. Jump off to the right and get into the ventilation shaft. Inside the shaft, go right and all the way down, passing a junction. At the bottom, go left and down once more. Follow the path to the right, down the next ladder and then to the right to finish the level. ============================================================================= 4.18– Level 14 ============================================================================= There are 10 prisoners to rescue. You have 5:10 to complete the level. This level starts in the dark, in a ventilation shaft, but quickly wind up in a moving platform shaft and in a level similar to the last. Slowly get out of the ventilation shaft. If you “hop” out, you will fall all the way down the moving platform shaft. Get on the moving platform and activate it by pressing down. It will stop one level down. Press down again to activate it anew and rescue two prisoners as it goes down. Once at the bottom, go right and pick up the machine-gun ammo. An alien will drop down as you reach the icon. Waste it and return to the moving platform, since there is nowhere else to go. Press up to activate it and get off to the right when the platform has gone up one level. Go through the door and continue right. As you get to the middle of a grey section of floor, an alien will drop from above. Also, see those blue spots on the floor? There’s an alien hidden there. Waste the alien from the ceiling, hop over the hidden alien and get to the edge of the platform. Drop onto the moving platform and ride it to the top. Get off to the left and be prepared for the alien that comes at you. Introduce it to your exploding ammo, continue left and go up the ladder to eliminate another alien as you go to the right. Jump the gap and rescue a prisoner. Jump a second gap to rescue another prisoner. Jump a third gap to a platform where you can pick up a health kit and machine- gun ammo. Continue right and drop down this platform onto a smaller one to the lower-right. Here, grab the flamethrower fuel. Drop down to the left to grab more flamethrower fuel and machine-gun ammo. Drop down to the right. Go left to rescue the prisoner. Continue left to the edge of the platform and get on the moving platform to go up one level and rescue another prisoner. Once more, drop off to the right, go left and down the ladder. Shoot the alien and rescue the prisoner. You may, if you wish, go for the machine-gun ammo on the left, but my clip was full and I ignored it. Instead, drop down the first gap on the left and land next to a moving platform. Do not waste time waiting for the platform. Rather, drop down and immediately push to the right to land on a platform beneath the one you were on. Jump to a platform on the left, jump the gap and rescue a prisoner. Jump another gap to the left and rescue another prisoner. Go left, jump the gap and rescue the prisoner. Now to exit this place… Go down the ladder and drop to the platform on the lower right. Drop to the left, go right and eliminate the alien. Keep going right to pick up grenades, flamethrower fuel, machine-gun ammo and a health kit. Take the ladder to the right and go all the way down. Go left and enter the ventilation shaft. Follow it to the left and complete the level. ============================================================================= 4.19– Level 15 ============================================================================= There are 5 prisoners to rescue. You have 5:40 to complete the level. Once again, you start in the dark. Move to the right to exit the shaft and go through the door. The first thing you see is a huge grey square that looks like a screen with flowing water. What it is isn’t important. What is important is the blue spot at the bottom that means a hidden alien. Slowly go right and eliminate the alien that falls as you approach the blue spot, then jump the hidden alien. Go past the ladder and take out the alien that drops from the ceiling. Go back to the ladder and climb to the top. Drop off to the right to rescue the prisoner. Go right and get on the moving platform. I ignored the machine-gun ammo above. As it reaches its lowest point, jump to the platform on the left. Rescue the prisoner. Drop to the platform on the left and rescue another prisoner. Grab the health kit and let the alien on the lower platform pass from the right to the left before going down the ladder to waste it. Move slowly to the left and be prepared for an alien that comes at you. Turn it into another alien stain on the platform. Go left to pick up the explosive and machine-gun ammo and some flamethrower fuel. Now go all the way to the right, jump the gap and rescue the prisoner. Wait for the alien on the lower platform to be on the right before you drop down through the gap and eliminate it. Go to the right to get machine-gun ammo and flamethrower fuel. Return to the left and drop down onto the lower left platform. Go a little to the left to trigger the falling alien and start going down the ladder. Wait for the alien to be on the left before going down to the platform and wasting it. Continue left and be prepared for another falling alien. Help it leave this world and go to the left. Don’t wait for the moving platform. Drop down and direct Ripley to the right to land on the platform below the one you were on. Drop down again to the left to another platform below you. Ka-boom the alien on the platform to your right. Go right and jump the gap. Pick up the flamethrower fuel and machine-gun ammo. Next, drop off to the small platform on the right and then drop off to another platform on the lower left. Rescue the last prisoner. Time to leave. Jump off to the left. From now onwards, make sure you do not fall to the bottom, since it appears to be lava and will instantly kill Ripley. With this in mind, you need to jump from the right edge of the first platform (otherwise you hit your head and fall into the lava) and over the next platform, to land on the second one. A second similar jump gets you past another platform and onto one to the upper right, where you can grab machine-gun ammo. Next, drop to the lower-left platform, drop to the right and pick up the flamethrower fuel and grenades. Continue to the right, grab the machine-gun ammo and complete the level. ============================================================================= 4.20– Level 15.1 Boss Fight ============================================================================= Welcome to the final fight. You have 3:40 to end this battle. Start off by equipping your explosive ammo. Drop to the lower platform and go right. Get to the edge and jump to the next platform. Consider this your ambush spot. The big alien will pass by you every once in a while. All you need to do is tag it with the explosive ammo and it will soon be sputtering its guts all over the place. For my part, I used 11 shots and missed quite a bit. I think it requires between 5 and 7 hits. And there was still 2:53 on the clock. Quite a letdown for a finale after 15 levels and 5 presumed bosses. Anyway, enjoy the rest of the closing screens and credits. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 5- Enemies =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= The enemies aren't hard to kill and their variety is quite limited. ============================================================================= 5.1- Alien pods ============================================================================= These enemies are more of an obstacle. They are small ovoid objects that can be defeated with one machine-gun shot. Some pods eject alien hatchlings when they are defeated. ============================================================================= 5.2- Alien hatchlings ============================================================================= These enemies are small reddish creatures which crawl low to the ground. They sometimes hop. Some originate from alien pods while others can be seen roaming free. A couple machine-gun shots are sufficient to eradicate them. ============================================================================= 5.3- Regular aliens ============================================================================= Even though these aliens attack in a variety of ways and have different levels of hit points, they nonetheless all look fairly identical. The basic regular alien simply roams around and attacks you. In earlier levels, a machine-gun round will force them back and it takes 3-6 rounds to take them down. In later levels, these aliens may shoot projectiles and they are not forced back anymore by machine-gun fire. I do not know if it takes more hits to put them down, since I only used the flamethrower and explosive ammo at this point. Only one hit was required from these weapons. Other regular alien types are : - Hidden aliens : These hide in the floor and wait for you to pass over them so as to grab and harm you. They can be spotted by a light blue mark which is visible above the floor where they are hiding. Simply jump over them. - Dropping aliens : These are hanging from the ceiling, waiting for you to come within a certain distance or to pass directly beneath their position, before dropping onto you and attacking. These are not always visible. Their dropping on you can mostly be avoided by simple patience. Don’t advance too quickly and be ready to turn around in a heartbeat if one lands behind you. ============================================================================= 5.4- Big aliens (Bosses) ============================================================================= Boss aliens are just bigger regular aliens. You will encounter five of them in the game (after every three levels) and they are an unimpressive interlude between levels that are much more entertaining – and these levels feel somewhat repetitive after a while.
