The native peoples' origin of this island is still unknown. It has been acknowledged, however, that these individuals constructed towns and cities on the island, as well as established their own original culture. Masses of iron and steel run along the roadways and soaring towers continuously spew out opaque black smoke. It was a hopeful time. Most everyone believed that there was no limit on the amount of personal wealth that could be created from output of the gigantic mechanisms of the world. However, in compensation for the bringing of brilliant prosperity, toxic substances known as the "water of death" were brought to the people of this land. These substances were the discharges created by the heavy water treatment facilities and polluted every water source from the clouds in the sky to ordinary drinking water crucial for everyday existence. Particularly in areas where there were no sufficient treatment facilities poverty-level citizens could be found. It was here that the effects of the toxic substances could be witnessed including among others, infectious diseases and high birth rates of deformed children. The poisonous water had ruined these residents' health. Lucian Tyler was born as one of a set of twins to a poor family who resided in the lower urban part of town. It was said that one in four newborn babies in that area would suffer from some kind of ailment due to the toxic substances. Lucian seemed to live a healthy and vigorous life, however, his sister was continuously afflicted by "severe congenital frightening light syndrome" {how's that for an ailment!}. This syndrome brought with it an inability for the victim to receive any form of sunlight upon the body without extreme physical pain. Day after day, Lucian's sister would become ever more weaker. Even after she had lost most of her vision, she continued to try and live a fervent life. [Why am I the healthy one?] Throughout his childhood, Lucian suffered with a guilty conscience because of his sister's sickness. It was almost as if he was forcing the disease upon himself. He would often state that he was supposed to have had the ailment, not her, and so Lucian unselfishly devotedly himself to his sister's care. It was obvious that Lucian was attempting to compensate for his overall healthy existence. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PAGE 5 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On day, against his father's wishes, Lucian exchanged some small earrings for some "shining water," an expensive elixir of "firefly water," for his sister's health. In the dim light of their house, Lucian read a book to his sister late one night. It was her favorite book and contained the story of "The Tale of a Knight and a Princess." "Hey, do you think that knight will come to rescue me," his sister remarked absentmindedly to Lucian after he finished reading the story. "I will be your knight. I promise," Lucian stated to his sister and with that being said he nodded his head decisively as if he had finally shaken off all of the despair that had been haunting him his whole life. It was at that moment that Lucian decided to become a knight and soon after he taught himself the art of swordsmanship. Lucian quelled his dissatisfaction of the upper class and their decadent lifestyles, for which he felt were personally responsible for his sister's condition, within his daily training exercises. He was a young man both manipulated and obsessed by his own impatience and irritation and it were these things that would never be healed. He knew he could not prevent his sister's ultimate death, however, that did not prevent him from giving her all the strength and courage he could muster to show her everyday. Several years later, Lucian's sister departed from her world of pain. Afterwards, all that was left was a promise that had not been accomplished. [Whom should I hate now?] With remorse and anger Lucian raised his clenched fist. He did not know how to put it back down again. While wondering around the dismal city, Lucian stumbled across a solution in his mind. He would seek revenge against Sword Emperor Duran for it was he who was chiefly responsible for the heavy water treatment facilities that had poisoned his sister. Duran was an upper classman who certainly must have been pleased with the wealth that was produced for him by his facilities. However, Lucian soon learned that Duran had mysteriously disappeared and no one in the city knew of the Sword Emperor's whereabouts. Lucian then began a quest to find Duran and avenge the death of his sister. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PAGE 6 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HOW TO OPERATE This game is designed for one-person play only. Select characters with the Directional Pad, right or left, and press the A or C Button to enter. If you select and enter a character already entered, then that character will be excluded from the battle members. While selecting characters, the X Button will allow a status checks and equipment changes on highlighted characters (see page 12). The number of tiles displayed in the center of the screen is equal to the number of characters who can be chosen to participate in the combat. After the characters are all chosen, press the Start Button and the Tactical Battle portion will begin. BATTLE START!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PAGE 14 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TACTICAL BATTLE How To Proceed In Battle: The battle proceeds by alternative turns via all participants. During the player's turn, choose characters one by one and move and/or attack. After all characters' turns are completed, choose "Turn Is Finished" and the turns shift to the enemy's characters and the process is repeated. About Player Characters: At first, only two player characters are available (Lucian and Carroll). As the story advances the number of playable characters also increases and this increases the number of playable characters that can participate in battle as well. A player may not be able to check the status of certain characters that will accompany the player halfway through the adventure. Also, it will be impossible to level up these characters' abilities as well as equip them with items. In this case, the color of the character-cursor will inform the player roughly as to the total number of hit points said character has during a battle. Player Turn: Choose Character: Command - It is possible for a character to perform numerous actions within the limits of their Action Points. Choose "Turn Is Finished" Enemy Turn: Enemy characters can perform numerous actions within the limits of their Action Points. All Enemy Characters Complete Their Turns Advance To Player's Turn (Repeat) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PAGE 15 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- System: AP (Action Point): Every time a character performs an action a certain amount of AP is consumed. Within the AP limits of a character it is possible to take multiple actions within a turn. The figure on the right side of this page displays some examples of action. AP does not increase more than the number given in the beginning of a turn. However, as characters gain levels throughout the game the amount of AP consumption per character will drop. This will allow for more variety in strategy for players. {hmm, really?} AP: Movement - Equipped Technique (An orthodox deadly blow style) Movement - Attack - Attack (With enough AP it is possible to make multiple attacks) {isn't this the fourth or five time this has been mentioned?!} Movement - Attack - Movement (After attacking, keep your distance from the enemy [hit and run away]) Control The Power Of Attack And The Amount Of Heat Generated: Adjust the amount of jet steam with the Acceleration Meter and control the power of the attack. The more jet steam, the higher value of the attack. However, the amount of heat generated is also higher in value and is accumulated within the weapon. When an equipped or super-equipped technique is utilized, the amount of heat increases substantially {as is the case with Titus early on in the game} Overheated Weapons: When a certain amount of heat is accumulated within a weapon, the Acceleration Meter will no longer function and the probability of overheating the weapon increases greatly. If the weapon does indeed overheat, the word "HEAT" will appear on the screen. Disadvantages of an overheated weapon include decreased amounts of damage caused to enemies {um, you can't attack if your weapon is overheated, but that's OK}, impossibility of counterattacking enemies, disorder of cooling the gear, and so on. {got that cause I sure don't} Cooling The Weapon: Weapons are slowly cooled every turn. If a player chooses "Wait" during the battle, the weapon is cooled to the corresponding number of AP left. Also, there is an item available to prevent the generation of heat from rising. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PAGE 16 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How To Read The Battle Screen: 1. Weapon Palette - Characters' status (name, present level, weapon type, HP/the maximum HP). When HP becomes 0 (zero), that character can no longer engage in the combat. 2. Amount Of Accumulated Heat - Warning lamp that illustrates the total amount of heat accumulated within the weapon. As heat accumulates, the lamp continues to light up. The Acceleration Meter will no longer rise and the probability of overheating the weapon increases as well. 3. Acceleration Meter - Displays the number of revs a weapon can obtain. Raise the Acceleration Meter for more jet steam in order to obtain increases in attack power. Be aware, however, of the increased amount of heat generated by this activity. 4. Character Cursor - As HP decrease, the color changes (Blue - Yellow - Red). 5. Remaining AP - AP decreases with every action. Multiple attacks are permitted within the limits of a character's AP. {here it is once again just incase you didn't get it the first five or six times} 6. Heat Meter - Displays the amount of heat accumulated within a weapon. During an attack, as the Acceleration Meter rises the after attack accumulated heat is displayed for players. 7. Acceleration Meter (Numerical Value Indicator) - Roughly displays the number of acceleration revs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PAGE 17 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Indication Of Action-Icon - Status: Choose each character with the Digital Pad and the Weapon Pallet is displayed. Set the cursor on a character and press the C Button to display the Action-Icon. Also, it is possible to select characters in order by pressing the A Button. Types of Action-Icon: When the Action-Icon is displayed, select an action by moving the Digital Pad left or right and press the C Button to enter. A [circle with a slash through it] indicates an unavailable choice. Movement: Move characters. The farther a character is moved, the more AP is consumed. Icons are displayed for reference while moving a character. AP will not be consumed for simply turning a character in place. Within moving limits, set the cursor on a location and press the C Button. Choose a facing direction for the character by moving the Digital Pad left or right and press the C Button to enter. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PAGE 18 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Attack: Attack the enemy. Common Technique, Equipped Technique, and Super-Equipped Technique are the three (3) types of attacks in the game. Choose whether or not to view 3D battles in the Options menu. Common Technique: Common attack that utilizes a basic weapon. Control the attack power with the Acceleration Meter but be aware that a higher attack power constitutes a greater heat buildup within the weapon. Set the cursor on an enemy within your attack range and press the C Button. The Acceleration Meter goes up as the Digital Pad is pressed down. Press the C Button when the desired amount is generated. Equipped Technique: A special attack that delivers greater damage to an opponent with just one hit. More heat is generated in this manner versus the Common Technique though. Set the cursor on an enemy within your attack range and press the C Button. Super-Equipped Technique: This type of attack is only available to higher-level player characters. It is the most powerful attack and also generates the most heat. Set the cursor on an enemy within your attack range and press the C Button. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PAGE 19 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Action: Besides attacking, there are three (3) other kinds of actions available to player characters (Switch, Item, and Recover) Switch: When chosen, a player character will be able to activate a button if it is located directly in front of the character. Item: Consume Items. When chosen, a list of Items will be displayed. Pick an item to use with the Directional Pad and press the C Button to enter. Recover: Only particular characters will be able to utilize this Action. The character itself and the adjacent player characters will be able to recover HP with this Action. Select the Action with the Directional Pad and press the C Button to enter. Wait (Cooling): Finish the Action of the characters by using this function. It will utilize the remaining AP in order to cool down the character's weapon. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PAGE 20 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- System Window: During a player's turn, press the Start or C Button when the cursor is not directly over a character to display the System Window. Select a command and press the C Button to enter. Finish Turn: When chosen, a confirmation message will appear. Choosing "Yes" will end the player's turn and advance onto the enemy's turn. Note - any remaining AP will be lost unless the player chooses "Wait (Cooling)" before hand. Status: It is possible to learn of both players' and enemies' status at any time by moving the Directional Pad over the character (for each heading, see page 12). However, be advised that changing equipped items is not possible. Turn Information: The number of turns, weather, temperature, and winning condition and losing condition are displayed. When the winning condition is available to the player, press the C Button to designate the place on the map in red. Data: From this command it is possible to save/load the data, as well as to redo the game from the beginning of the stage. This "save" feature is different from the data that is saved during the "Data" option in a City Window whereas only one save is possible. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PAGE 21 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Configuration: Multiple options are available here. Choose an option with the Directional Pad and press the C Button to enter: Setting Up Key - Choose from six (6) ways to move the cursor during battle (see figures at the bottom of this page). Sound - Set sound output to stereo or mono. 3D Battle - Choose to view Equipped or Super-Equipped Techniques during battle or not. Radar - View the whole battle map. Cursor Movements: In battle the direction buttons will correspond to the type chosen: Type A-C - The cursor moves to four (4) directions. Type a-c - The cursor moves to eight (8) directions. The default setting is "A." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PAGE 22 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Winning A Battle: When the Winning Conditions displayed at the beginning of the battle have been obtained (destroy all enemies, arrive at a certain location, etcetera), the fight is over. Items and gold obtained, along with the number of turns spent, are then displayed. Press the C Button to enter and continue to the next scene. Losing A Battle: When the Losing Condition has occurred (death of Lucian, the number of turns exceed 50, etcetera), the game is over. Press the Start Button on the Game Over Screen to return to the Title Screen. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PAGE 23 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Strategies For Winning Battles: The following information is vital in knowing how to effectively damage an enemy and win a battle. Strategy 1 - Make Good Use of the Differences in Height Found on the Battle Map: The Battle Map is structured three-dimensionally (3D). So, an attack from a greater height than an opponent will result in a more powerful attack. Be aware, however, that certain characters cannot attack over a certain height. Strategy 2 - Pay Attention to the Direction that Your Enemy, and Your Character, Faces: An attack to the side of or from behind an enemy will produce more damage than an attack to the front. Also, an enemy has a greater probability of counterattacking if attacked from the front. An enemy should always be attacked from the side or back if at all possible. Strategy 3 - Mind the Weather: On stages outside, the weather changes patterns repeatedly. These changes produce various influences upon each character and their equipment (movement allowances, Wait (Cooling) periods, etcetera). Please keep this in mind. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PAGE 24 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INTRODUCTION OF MAIN CHARACTERS (4) Lucian Taylor - The hero of the Wachenroder whose twin sister has recently passed away. He blames himself for her death and feels that he is personally responsible somehow. Lucian is normally a very calm and self-possessed person. Although he is quick to respond to threatening situations, he lacks a team- oriented frame of mind. Carroll Mew - She lacks common sense and is often ignorant of the "real" world (an example would be being defenseless in a dangerous section of town). Somehow, however, she projects dignity and the refinement of being a "proper" lady. Carroll is searching for Duran. {how 'bout that misogyny, folks! No one does it better than male Japanese writers} Duran Matthews - Once one of the five Sword Emperors, Duran was recently ousted from his position and his country on the charge of treason. He is now on the lam and Helder Lin has been appointed Sword Emperor in his place. Titus Groan - A bounty hunter by trade, Titus is subjective and emotional and fully aware of his limitations. An optimist by heart, Titus' personality could not be any further from that of Lucian's. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PAGE 25 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chemical Brothers Traveling Performance Troupe (4): Chemical - The leader of the group. Despite appearances to the contrary, Chemical is exceedingly agile. Bellebete - The diva of the troupe. Bellebete lost her eyesight at a very young age. Fatboy Slim - A performer with a unique constitution. Idol Lace - An extremely restless individual, Idol is the acrobat of the group. The Blow Monkeys (3): Franky Zappa - The leader of the gang. He is stubborn and very strict on himself and others. Small Faces - She is quick-witted and prompt to engage in combat, but at the same time she can come off as a little shy. Orange Deluxe - This softhearted individual is mechanically inclined. The Five Sword Emperors and Empresses (5): Madame Leonora George M. Cohan Benoit Miss Leome Helder Lin ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PAGE 26 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE WHOLE MAP OF EDOALD ISLAND Imperial City - King Wizar: This central city manages the politics and economy of the island. The city, known for its denizens having the highest level of intellect than any other location on the island, is also the heart of culture and academia. Here, many universities and cultural facilities flourish. Blind Guardian, the special security force under the direct control of the Kingdom, is the main military police force for the region. Also, the city has the authority to direct the Blind Guardian force over the borders of neighboring cities if Imperial City is ever threatened in any way. Cobalt Blue City - Sword Emperor Benoit: The main agricultural district of Edoald Island, Cobalt Blue City is routinely pelted by strong seasonal winds. As a result, the city features reinforced walls found throughout. Cobalt Blue City is also the only district to feature unprocessed, perishable foods available in special organic growing sections of the area. Color City - Sword Empress Madame Leonora: The pleasure and entertainment capital of Edoald Island, Color City is the only city authorized to be divided into separate quarters. It has been said that the whole of Color City is nothing but a giant red light district. Performances of every kind are to be found here along with fresh gossip waiting to be sent out for the rest of the island to hear. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PAGE 27 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Smoke City - Sword Empress Miss Leome: This city is known for its mechanical engineering laboratories and heat dynamic academic facilities. Most of the newer technology discovered originates in Smoke City. Everything from steam engine research to airship and arms development is produced here. There is also a royal research laboratory in Smoke City that studies the technology of the ancient civilizations of Edoald Island. Violent City - Sword Emperor George M. Cohan: The steel industry of all of Edoald Island is centered here in Violent City. There is a large-scale operation of guild merchants specializing in arms here, and business is very prosperous at the moment. Violent City is proud of its steel heritage and many peoples of the island refer to this location as "the city of steel." Smoke City and Violent City trade vigorously with one another for goods and services. Foggy City - Sword Emperor Helder Lin: There are heavy water treatment facilities to be found everywhere in this "city of water." The elusive clans of the Moribitos are also to be found near the adjacent woods. People of Foggy City are thought to live a unique existence due to the differences in water, air, and society that the city features. The main industry here is "firefly water." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PAGE 28 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- INTRODUCTION OF ITEMS An Introduction To Many Of The Equipped Items: ITEM NAME / EQUIPPED LOCATION / TYPE / EFFECT 1-3 Limit Motor / Weapon / Permanent / To Stabilize the Range of the Accelerator Meter so the Attack Corresponds with the Power Limit Accelerator Gear Clamp / Weapon / Permanent / The Attack Power and Temperature Accelerate Generator Koketto / Arm / Permanent / A Supplemental Power Device for Sledges (AT +30, ATP +1) Bio Booster AT / Head / Consumption / Lasts Five (5) Turns (AT +30) Bio Booster DF / Head / Consumption / Lasts Five (5) Turns (DF +30) Bio Booster ATX / Head / Consumption / Lasts Seven (7) Turns (AT +45) Bio Booster DFX / Head / Consumption / Lasts Seven (7) Turns (DF +45) Ryufuten Radiator / Body / Permanent / Cooling Efficiency Improves By 40% Kyuren Cooler / Leg / Consumption / Cool the Sledge's Temperature By 50% Kugelufestuo Body / Body / Permanent / Armor Protecting Against Sledges (DF +40, MVP +1) A-Up Converter / Leg / Permanent / Convert Power to Focus on Attack (ATP +1, MVP -2) M-Up Converter / Leg / Permanent / Convert Power to Focus on Movement (ATP -1, MVP +1) DD-Kurusute / Leg / Consumption / Recover HP (small) DD-Kurume / Leg / Consumption / Recover HP (medium) DD-Kuronetorute / Leg / Consumption / Recover HP (large) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PAGE 29 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ABOUT SLEDGES Sledge (S.R.G. = Steam Refine Gear) A general term applied to a series of arms and equipment. A sledge consists of two parts; a power part made up of a generator, and a weapon part. A rough explanation of the sledge is as follows: First, the power part generates pure heat elements using a heavy hydrogen cartridge that is sent to the weapon part. Next, the titanium furnace produces the heat source for greater output {ah, it's all becoming clear now . . .}. This heat source is used for the attacking power of the sledge. However, there are two weak points to the design: One - The heavy hydrogen cartridge is unstable. Because of this and high prices for the element, substitute gases have been invented. But, accidental discharges occur fairly often with these cheaper alternatives. Two - Heat not used accumulates at the bottom of the sledge. To solve this problem, a substitute of the heavy hydrogen cartridge is needed. But, the substitute should be compounded of a good rate of chemical reaction to make the system stable. After further testing, the material "link" was introduced by Sword Empress Leome. In comparison to heavy hydrogen, this new material provided a greater rate of chemical reactions through a much smaller generator. Because of this discovery, sledges have now been developed at a higher rate for weapon usage. It is said that each of the Five Sword Emperors have a different mechanism used in the design of their individual sledges based on the technology of past civilizations on the island. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PAGE 30 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- STAFF INTRODUCTIONS Main Character Design: Range Murata Special Mechanism Design & Plastic: Takayuki Taketani Event Visual & Setting Assistant: AB (Yoshitoshi Abe) Character Designs: Yasushi Yamaguchi Tomokazu Nakano CG Picture & Arts Setting: Yasuo "Daddy" Fujita Title Image Design & Illustration: Ryuichiro Tozawa {Kutsuzawa?} Main Theme Music Composition: Ian McDonald (formerly of King Crimson) Voice Talents: Lucian - {Kou?} Kusao Carroll - Akemi Okamura Titus - Mitsuru Ogata Zappa - Naoki Bando Small - Yuki Masuda Orange - Naoki Bando Chemical - Uko Kakase Slim - Tomohiro Tsuboi Idol - Akemi Okamura Benoit - Mitsuru Ogata George - Naoki Bando Leonora - Atsuko Tanaka Leome - Toshiko Fujita Vurado - Mitsuru Ogata Helder - Yasuyuki Kase Waluter - Naoki Bando Bellebete - Kyoko {Yasuko?} {Higami?} Dyuren - Banjo {Manjo?} Ginga Cooperation: Ezaki Productions Incorporated Seiji {Aoni?} Productions Incorporated Recording Studio: PAGE ONE Incorporated SFX Special Picture: buildup Incorporated {Yoya?} Okabe Plot Director: Masahiro Okano Miniature Works: Hiroyuki Nakazawa Digital Effects: Takayuki Hayashi Frame Works Entertainment Incorporated: Katsuyuki Sugimura Kazuya Nozawa CG Production: {Ro?} Kanno Jun Watanabe Bridge Incorporated: Yoshio Kurihara Kengo Matsumura Camera (Photography): Toshitsugu {Toshitsugi?} {Joto?} {Senko?} Fujino BEGUL Incorporated: Aki Hagiwara Camera Studio (Photography): a space studio Incorporated Camera Director: Yasuo "Daddy" Fujita Game Production: Planning & Production: TNS Incorporated Producer: Motoji Terazaki Director: Hidekazu Miyazawa Main Programmer: Ryo Funakura 3D Battle Programmer: Shingo Fujita Sub-Programmer: Keiji {Keiju?} Ono Graphics: Junich Fujita Teppei Osawa 3D Modeling: Akira Fujita Planning: Yuto Azuma {Higashi?} Planning Assistants: Tetsu {Toru?} Maruyama Hiroyuki Yoshino Takahiro Suzuki Hiroaki Ikeda Graphic Production Cooperation: Weston Incorporated Shinichi Sakamoto Main Designers: Rieko Washimi Mina Morioka Hiromitsu {Hirozane?} Kawanishi Hiroyuki Ishiguro CG Designs: Yuko Kobayashi Nami Arai Kyoko Miyamoto Eiko Yamada A.L.U.
