However, I own the Genesis version, so that version will be the basis for this FAQ. =============================================================================== [TOC] CHAPTER 00: Table of Contents [TOC] =============================================================================== This FAQ now contains the commonly-used "Quick Find" catalog. Next to each section of the guide contains a three-letter code. Hit CTRL+F to access the "Find" menu, type in the three-letter code, and keep searching (should be the second find) until you find the section you inquire! Easy. =============================================================================== [VSH] CHAPTER 02: Version History [VSH] =============================================================================== ========================================================== January 3, 2004 -- Version 4.0 ========================================================== Welcome to another new year, ladies and gentlemen. Here's what I've done: ALTERATIONS - Another new year, another change to the Copyright Information section that involves the year, among other things. - A short little blip has been added to the Flickies subsection. - The Saturn and PC Bonus Stages have been combined into one subsection. - Changes have been made to the Author Contact section. ========================================================== October 4, 2003 -- Version 3.0 ========================================================== Well, I made a couple of quick revisions to this guide. ALTERATIONS - I suppose this isn't too important, but I changed the format of the guide, so it is now done on WordPad instead of Word. - Changes have been made to the Copyright Information section. - Included the pronunciation of "Echidna". - Updates in "Acknowledgments". ============================================================ July 4, 2003 -- Version 2.0 ============================================================ Happy "Fourth" everybody. I did a few updates to this guide in order to make the information more precise. ALTERATIONS - Included the fact that hedgehogs are insectivores, not rodents, in "Characters" - Included the movement of Orange Flickies in the "Flickies" subsection - For some reason, a line in "Items" was deleted that was rather necessary. I put it back. - Added "Pneumatic Spikes" to the Items List in "Items" - Included more credits in the "Acknowledgments" section ============================================================ January 5, 2003 -- Version 1.0 ============================================================ Being the first version, all the mandatory information is here. Suggestions for improvement are always welcome, so if there's something you feel needs mentioning/adding, please tell me! =============================================================================== [CHR] CHAPTER 03: Characters [CHR] =============================================================================== =========================================================== SONIC THE HEDGEHOG =========================================================== Born and raised on South Island (where Sonic 1 took place), a speed demon, and a guy with a major chili dog obsession, Sonic the Hedgehog has evolved into one of the most loved video game mascots of our time. When one mentions "Sega," one can't help but think of the blue, spiky-hair insectivore. =========================================================== MILES "TAILS" PROWER - THE TWO-TAILED FOX =========================================================== I don't know, nor want to know, why Sonic, an ultra-cool dude, has a best friend in a whiny, premature ten-year-old fox. Sounds a little suspicious to me... Anyway, this kid is pretty cool, even if his role in this game is not that important. =========================================================== KNUCKLES THE ECHIDNA =========================================================== Fifteen years old, Knux guards the Master Emerald, the prime source of balance and harmony on the Floating Island, his home... island. He is a bit hotheaded, but we don't know very much new information since his role is much like that of Tails... and in case you were wondering, the correct pronunciation of "Echidna" is "eh-kid-nuh". ========================================================== DR. IVO ROBOTNIK ========================================================== Also known as Dr. Eggman, Robotnik is the definition of evil dudes who need to hit a Stairmaster. The red suit and fiery mustache define this guy, but nothing seems more prominent than the Egg-O-Matic, his transport device used to hover throughout the universe. =========================================================== FLICKIES =========================================================== Instead of the standard "save the island residents of all shapes and sizes" themes found in previous Sonic games, we just save Flickies now by destroying the robots or holding capsules (Panic Puppet). Either the gravity level must be really high or there's a lack of nutrition among the locals, but they are all really short. Flickies come in five (yes, five) different shades, each having a certain pattern of movement. - Blue Flickies are the easiest to find after destroying a Robot or being attacked; they just run in a circle around the point of impact. - Purple Flickies are slightly harder to find, as they run in a zig-zag pattern around the general proximity. - Red Flickies can be annoying, because they hop back and forth. Take caution when retrieving these bad boys, especially in Volcano Valley. - Possibly the most annoying out of the five, Green Flickies will roam about the entire zone until you pick them up. - Orange Flickies only occur in Volcano Valley, replacing the Purple species. While they have a different hue, they move in relatively the same pattern as their purple counterparts. Whether or not this was intentional of the crew involved in making this game, I do not know. =============================================================================== [ITM] CHAPTER 04: Items [ITM] =============================================================================== =========================================================== ITEM(S) | | USE(S) =========================================================== | Rings | | These are basically what | | | | your life depends on. If | | | | you don't have any rings, | | | | and you are hit by an | | | | enemy or obstacle, you'll | | | | lose a life. That sucks. | |---------------------------|-|---------------------------| | Spiked Balls | | Stay away from these. | | | | Replacing spikes of yore, | | | | but still sharp and | | | | deadly, touch these and | | | | you lose both your rings | | | | your collected Flickies. | | | | However, if you are out | | | | of rings... | |---------------------------|-|---------------------------| | Pneumatic Spikes | | Not the most common | | | | obstacle on the island, | | | | but pretty common | | | | nonetheless, these | | | | retractable spikes have | | | | the same affect as their | | | | spherical counterparts. | |---------------------------|-|---------------------------| | Dimension Rings | | When you touch these, all | | | | the Flickies you have | | | | collected in that part of | | | | the stage (maximum of | | | | five) will transport to | | | | safety. When all are | | | | free, you may advance to | | | | the next part or the end. | |---------------------------|-|---------------------------| | Sonic Icons | | Collect ten of these to | | | | earn one Continue. | |---------------------------| |---------------------------| | Ring Monitor | | "Rings" - Ten rings are | | | | added to your total. | |---------------------------| |---------------------------| | Sonic Head Monitor | | "1-Up" - You will get an | | | | extra life. | |---------------------------|-|---------------------------| | Star Monitor | | "Invincible" - You will | | | | have temporary | | | | invincibility. | |---------------------------|-|---------------------------| | Boot Monitor | | "Power Sneakers" - You | | | | will have a temporary | | | | speed boost. | |---------------------------|-|---------------------------| | Blue Sphere Monitor | | This gives you a shield. | |---------------------------|-|---------------------------| | Red Sphere Monitor | | This gives you a shield | | | | against fire attacks. | |---------------------------|-|---------------------------| | Gold Sphere Monitor | | This gives you a shield | | | | allows you to perform the | | | | Blast Attack. | |---------------------------|-|---------------------------| | Springs | | Bounce off these to get | | | | to higher areas. | |---------------------------|-|---------------------------| | Transports | | Spin dash on these to | | | | move upward in the act. | |---------------------------|-|---------------------------| | Rocks / Snow Mounds | | Found in Volcano Valley | | | | or Diamond Dust (respect- | | | | ively), these usually | | | | can be broken to reveal | | | | springs, warp tubes, or | | | | lava traps. | '---------------------------------------------------------' =============================================================================== [CTL] CHAPTER 05: Controls [CTL] =============================================================================== D-PAD - Moves Sonic A/C - Jump B - Spin Dash WHILE RUNNING, B - "Super Sonic Spin Attack" (Roll) A/C x2 - Blast Attack (Homing Attack, only when donning Gold Shield) =============================================================================== [ZND] CHAPTER 06: Zone Descriptions [ZND] =============================================================================== One of these days, I may get a walkthrough in this guide. For now, here's some brief descriptions of the eight zones. Each zone has three acts, with the exception of the Final Fight Zone, and the third act is a boss battle.. In each act, Sonic has unlimited time to race to the end, pass all the obstacles, collect all the Flickies, and collect as many rings as possible. Since zones are drawn out, I will give a very brief description. =========================================================== ZONE 01: Green Grove Zone =========================================================== The requisite "tropical paradise" first Zone, Green Grove has what you would expect: lush plant life, waterfalls, and tan, checkerboard floors. A total of twenty-five Flickies need to be saved; ten are in the first Act while fifteen are in the second. =========================================================== ZONE 02: Rusty Ruin Zone =========================================================== This zone is mainly a variation of the Marble Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog, but influences from the Marble Garden from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 are present as well. Cracks in the stone wall can sometimes be broken with a simple Spin Dash. Rotating spiked balls on chains and green spinners are frequent, so watch out for those obstacles. =========================================================== ZONE 03: Spring Stadium Zone =========================================================== This is following the tradition of Sonic the Hedgehog 2's Casino Night Zone and Sonic the Hedgehog 3's Carnival Night Zone, minus the flippers and slot machines. Pinball-esque bumpers are abundant, especially in Act Two. Blue balloons, yellow bumpers, spiked floors, and yellow are present everywhere in the entire zone. Watch out for those lancets that pop out from holes in the checkered floor as well. This zone is very tricky, so watch your footing and take it slowly. =========================================================== ZONE 04: Diamond Dust Zone =========================================================== Definitely a nice break from that last zone, Diamond Dust is the typical "glacier" stage: ice on the ground, rendering you out of control; snowmen about; raging, cold rivers. Speaking of those rivers, jump in order to advance upon them. If you see Blue Flickies trapped in ice (after defeating the green- hat snowmen), just break it open with a jump. =========================================================== ZONE 05: Volcano Valley Zone =========================================================== As the "Green Hill Zone" states: "Lava is NEVER beneficial." This holds especially true in the valley. If you don't find any Red Shields, you're in for a barbecue. Break open the tan, cracked rocks; some of them may lead to other areas. If you thought you had to take Spring Stadium slowly... =========================================================== ZONE 06: Gene Gadget Zone =========================================================== Another weird zone name, another weird zone. This time, the factory spurts electricity. However, Blue Shields can prevent that. Watch out for enemies, ride conveyor belts, and use those Scrap Brain-like elevators to your advantage. =========================================================== ZONE 07: Panic Puppet Zone =========================================================== In this zone, Flickies are being prepared to enter Robots, so just break open the tubes. In Act Two, there are no Flickies! It is just a simple race to the finish, which happens to traverse you through a giant Robotnik statue. Watch for all the tricky devices the mean Doctor has placed about. =========================================================== ZONE 08: Final Fight Zone =========================================================== Final boss battle only available after collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds. See "Bosses" for this. =============================================================================== [EMR] CHAPTER 07: Emeralds [EMR] =============================================================================== Chaos Emeralds are the seven gems that you go after. They come in seven respective colors: orange, green, red, blue, gray, purple, and aqua (although I forgot if they come in that particular order). If you have collected all seven, you can access the Final Fight Zone at the end of the game. Sadly, no Super Sonic results. ============================================================================== [BNS] CHAPTER 08: Bonus Stages [BNS] ============================================================================== =========================================================== GENESIS/MEGA DRIVE BONUS STAGES =========================================================== Semi-reminiscent of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, you must collect a set number of rings (fifty, 100, and 150) before you reach a checkpoint. It's not too hard, but you might get sick with the fast movement and not-so-hot graphic capabilities. Knuckles' stages are a bit easier than Tails' stages in my opinion. =========================================================== SATURN/PC BONUS STAGES =========================================================== The Saturn version is unusually similar to that of Sonic 2, but it's in 3D, has two rounds instead of three, and carries new obstacles such as springs and gaps. The PC version follows suit, except the stage is not in 3D, and only one round is in a stage. =============================================================================== [RBT] CHAPTER 09: Robots [RBT] =============================================================================== Why they changed the name from "Badniks" to "Robots" is beyond me. None of them, however, have any names. All the names below I have made up, except those from games of the past, in which case I feel the robot is a successor to that former Badnik. [CCG] =============================================================================== Admit it. You have wanted to cheat in almost any video game to come out. Fortunately, we have a section for you special people. Here it is. ========================================================== IGN CODES ========================================================== EASY EMERALDS Enter the Level Select code (see below) twice. Select any stage that has Tails or Knuckles in it (the first stage will do). Get fifty rings and visit Tails or Knuckles. When the special stage begins, press A + Start and you will receive the emerald for that course. EXTRA LIVES Here's a trick to gain as many lives as you want. Collect fifty rings, then enter the bonus stage and get an emerald. Let yourself die, then collect another fifty rings and re-enter the bonus stage. Give your rings to the same person you used when you went to the bonus stage the first time. You will go to the same stage where you found the emerald, but if you complete it this time, you'll get an extra life. Collect 100 rings to get a second extra life. Die and repeat the cycle as often as desired. LEVEL SELECT At the "Press Start" screen, press B, A, Right, A, C, Up, Down, A (Baracuda), then press Start. The level select menu will appear when you begin a game. LEVEL SKIP Enable the Level Select code (see above), then start a new game. To skip to the next level, pause the game and press A. Alternatively, push A, B, C, and Start at the same time to skip a level. =========================================================== GAME GENIE CODES =========================================================== Remember Game Genie? These codes I have _not_ personally tested, so let that be a warning. SKIP LEVELS: AADA-AAAE NON-STOP DEMO AJCA-AABY FREEZE ANIMATIONS: AJLA-AACG LEVEL SELECTION MENU ALWAYS APPEARS WHEN STARTING LEVEL: AJNA-AA32 INVISIBLE SONIC; ONLY HIS SHADOW APPEARS: AJNA-AAWT =========================================================== ODDITIES =========================================================== This game was never meant to be released for the Sega Saturn. However, a game in development, Sonic X-Treme, was cancelled, thereby forcing Sega to release this side-project. It has been notified to me that the zone order unusually reflects the order of Sonic CD. Here is a demonstration-showing chart. SONIC 3D BLAST SONIC CD Zone 01 Green Grove Zone Palmtree Panic Zone 02 Rusty Ruin Zone Collision Chaos Zone 03 Spring Stadium Zone Tidal Tempest Zone 04 Diamond Dust Zone Quartz Quadrant Zone 05 Volcano Valley Zone Wacky Workbench Zone 06 Gene Gadget Zone Stardust Speedway Zone 07 Panic Puppet Zone Metallic Madness Zone 08 Final Fight Zone Look carefully. First levels correlate well. Sonic CD fans know that there was to be a "ruin"-type level as the second level in SCD, but that never came to be. Spring Stadium/Collision Chaos works well. Tidal Tempest was a hot spring, and making a 3D water level in 1996 was rather challenging, so Volcano Valley fits the bill, even if the order is a bit screwy. Quartz Quadrant could be Diamond Dust sans ice. It's rather suspicious. =============================================================================== [ACK] CHAPTER 12: Acknowledgments [ACK] =============================================================================== PEOPLE WEBSITES -- Webmasters -- GameFAQs - For hosting this FAQ - For continuing to show great -- Myself appreciation for FAQ writers such - For writing this FAQ as myself -- Rob (AU620RS@aol.com) - For being the first host of this - For informing me that hedgehogs FAQ are insectivores, not rodents -- IGN Codes - For providing the codes -- GameWinners - For providing the Game Genie codes -- Green Hill Zone - For information in the "Oddities" and "Zone Descriptions" sections GAMES -- Sonic Adventure 2: Battle - For having the voice-overs, thereby informing me with the correct pronunciation of "Echidna" =============================================================================== [ATC] CHAPTER 13: Author Contact [ATC] =============================================================================== I can be reached via e-mail at the following address: cyebersurpher@hotmail.com If you wish to e-mail me about game help, please put "Sonic the Hedgehog GEN" as the title of the e-mail.
