This time, it's for the last Evangelion game that was release by SEGA for the Saturn. I've written it so that it is a complete guide to the entire game and all of its features. However, I have also included a lot of things that could be read and understood by people who don't have the game and are curious of the contents of it. There might be some spoilers in this guide, so please be aware of that. I would suggest you only use this guide if you are unable to do anything or understand what is going on. I have a very small knowledge of Japanese and this guide has been written from my basic deduction of the writting in the manual and the events in the game. There is no English script translation of this game in existance. 1-2 ABOUT THE GAME: It was in 1997, and Evangelion fever in Japan was at its peak. The TV series had spawned a massive fan base, and now Gainax was releasing the much anticipated movie "The End of Evangelion". If you were an EVA fan in Japan, this was the year to live in. A few months before, 2nd Impression was released to much acclaim to fans. Although it was simple in nature, and not really a game, fans loved it all the same. Now, it was time to release Sega's final game based on the Evangelion license. Unlike the previous two games, 1st and 2nd Impression, Digital Card Library is completely different. It is not a "side story" adventure and it has no battle mode whatsoever. What Digital Card Library consists of is nine "mini games" that are based on the Evangelion theme. Your goal is to collect all of the "Digital Cards" by playing these games. This would be the last game ever released by Sega that used the Evangelion license. Although, in theory, Sega would still be able to use the license for another game(s), it doesn't seem likely that they ever will, due to a number of important factors. The main one is that Evangelion is pretty much dead in Japan as I write this, and it's not popular enough in the West for Sega to even consider doing it for the US market. Therefore, there is no incentive for Sega to develop an expensive game based on the Evangelion license, especially since Sega is now attempting to rebuilt its wealth again on more profitable games after years of huge oses. To play this game, you just need a Sega Saturn and an ST Key to allow you to play import games. A prerequiste is a good knowledge of Japanese, but most Eva fans (like me) usually ignore this need and play the game anyway. 2nd Impression is a very good game, if not the best Evangelion game ever released. But some aspects of it could have been better if Sega had spent a bit more time with it. 1-3 STORYLINE: There is no storyline. The basic aim is to collect all of the "Digital Cards" in your folder. To gain cards, you need to play all of the mini games and get good results in them. That's about it! THE GUIDE --------- 2-0 GENERAL STUFF: Before I start going into the main guide of how to play this game, here are some major points to keep in mind while playing: - I've written this guide in the same order that the cards are sorted in the game. - At the end of this guide, you will find explanations of the comics and the complete list of merchandise that is present in the game. I have done this to allow people who aren't able to play this game to see what they are missing out on. ;) - This game is entirely in Japanese. Unless you know the language well, be prepared to do a small bit ofguesswork. - Is there a way to skip the FMV on the Digital Card? Yes, by pressing Start while it is playing. - Sometimes you will receive a card that is a still frame of video card that you have already received. This is normal, and has no use. Keep playing until you have all of the video cards. - Don't worry about not being able to find the save option in the game. Like the previous two Evangelion games, your data is automatically saved on to the Saturn's memory. But it would be a good idea not to turn off the system when you've finished a mini game and are receiving cards, as that's when the Saturn might be saving. You can continue your game by choosing the option on the main menu (it's in English). 2-1 GOLD CARDS: SHINJI IKARI REI AYANAMI ASUKA LANGLEY SOHRYU MISATO KATSURAGI GENDO IKARI KAWORU NAGISA EVANGELION ANGELS ABILITY 2-2 CHARACTER CARDS: SHINJI IKARI 1 SHINJI IKARI 2 SHINJI IKARI 3 SHINJI IKARI 4 SHINJI IKARI 5 SHINJI IKARI 6 SHINJI IKARI 7 SHINJI IKARI 8 SHINJI IKARI 9 REI AYANAMI 1 REI AYANAMI 2 REI AYANAMI 3 REI AYANAMI 4 REI AYANAMI 5 REI AYANAMI 6 REI AYANAMI 7 REI AYANAMI 8 REI AYANAMI 9 ASUKA LANGLEY SOHRYU 1 ASUKA LANGLEY SOHRYU 2 ASUKA LANGLEY SOHRYU 3 ASUKA LANGLEY SOHRYU 4 ASUKA LANGLEY SOHRYU 5 ASUKA LANGLEY SOHRYU 6 ASUKA LANGLEY SOHRYU 7 ASUKA LANGLEY SOHRYU 8 ASUKA LANGLEY SOHRYU 9 GENDO IKARI 1 GENDO IKARI 2 GENDO IKARI 3 GENDO IKARI 4 MISATO KATSURAGI 1 MISATO KATSURAGI 2 MISATO KATSURAGI 3 MISATO KATSURAGI 4 MISATO KATSURAGI 5 RITSUKO AKAGI 1 RITSUKO AKAGI 2 RITSUKO AKAGI 3 RITSUKO AKAGI 4 NAOKO AKAGI 1 NAOKO AKAGI 2 MAYA IBUKI 1 MAYA IBUKI 2 MAYA IBUKI 3 KOZO FUYUTSKI 1 KOZO FUYUTSKI 2 KOZO FUYUTSKI 3 YUI IKARI 1 YUI IKARI 2 MAKOTO HYUGA 1 MAKOTO HYUGA 2 SHIGERU AOBA 1 SHIGERU AOBA 2 RYOJI KAJI 1 RYOJI KAJI 2 RYOJI KAJI 3 RYOJI KAJI 4 PENPEN 1 PENPEN 2 KEEL LORENZ SEELE 1 SEELE 2 TOJI SUZUHARA 1 TOJI SUZUHARA 2 TOJI SUZUHARA 3 KENSUKE AIDA 1 KENSUKE AIDA 2 HIKARI HORAKI 1 HIKARI HORAKI 2 STUDENTS TEACHER KAWORU NAGISA 1 KAWORU NAGISA 2 KAWORU NAGISA 3 NERV TECHNICIANS NERV MECHANICS NERV INTELLIGENCE JET ALONE COMMANDER UN GENERALS FLEET ADMIRALS SHINJI & REI 1 SHINJI & REI 2 SHINJI & ASUKA 1 SHINJI & ASUKA 2 SHINJI & IKARI SHINJI & MISATO SHINJI & KAJI SHINJI & TOJI REI & ASUKA ASUKA & KAJI REI & GENDO MISATO & RITSUKO MISATO & KAJI 1 MISATO & KAJI 2 MISATO & MAKOTO TOJI & KENSUKE 1 TOJI & KENSUKE 2 IKARI & FUYUTSKI 2-3 EVA CARDS: EVA UNIT-01 1 EVA UNIT-01 2 EVA UNIT-01 3 EVA UNIT-01 4 EVA UNIT-01 5 EVA UNIT-00 YELLOW 1 EVA UNIT-00 YELLOW 2 EVA UNIT-00 BLUE 1 EVA UNIT-00 BLUE 2 EVA UNIT-02 1 EVA UNIT-02 2 EVA UNIT-02 3 EVA UNIT-03 PLUG SUIT EVA LAUNCH ENTRY PLUG ARMAMENT BUILDING EVA PROTOTYPES 3RD ANGEL 4TH ANGEL 5TH ANGEL 6TH ANGEL 7TH ANGEL 8TH ANGEL 9TH ANGEL 10TH ANGEL 11TH ANGEL 12TH ANGEL 13TH ANGEL 14TH ANGEL 15TH ANGEL 16TH ANGEL 17TH ANGEL ADAM EMBRYO ADAM AWAKENING LILITH UN TANKS UN AIRFORCE 1 UN AIRFORCE 2 UN FLEET NERV TRANSPORTER NERV MOBILE COMMAND VEHICLE JET ALONE TRAINS MISATO'S CAR 2-4 MISCELLANEOUS CARDS: EVA TV TRAILER EPISODE 2 TRAILER EPISODE 3 TRAILER EPISODE 4 TRAILER EPISODE 5 TRAILER EPISODE 6 TRAILER EPISODE 7 TRAILER EPISODE 8 TRAILER EPISODE 9 TRAILER EPISODE 10 TRAILER EPISODE 11 TRAILER EPISODE 12 TRAILER EPISODE 13 TRAILER EPISODE 14 TRAILER EPISODE 15 TRAILER (WHITE) EPISODE 16 TRAILER EPISODE 17 TRAILER EPISODE 18 TRAILER EPISODE 19 TRAILER EPISODE 20 TRAILER EPISODE 21 TRAILER EPISODE 22 TRAILER EPISODE 23 TRAILER EPISODE 24 TRAILER (WHITE) EPISODE 25 TRAILER EPISODE 26 TRAILER ENDING CREDITS TOKYO-3 RESTORING TOKYO-3 RETRACTING NERV GEOFRONT COMMAND ROOM COMMANDER'S OFFICE DUMMY PLUG MAGI SYSTEM LANCE OF LONGINUS AT FIELD 2-5 GAME CARDS: COMMANDER IKARI'S STARING CONTEST 4TH ANGEL ATTACK MAGMA DIVER EVA LAUNCHER PENPEN RACE MISATO'S BEER GAMBLE THE HUMAN WORK (JET ALONE) EVA PUZZLE EVA QUIZ 2-6 EXTRAS: COMIC BOOK 1 COMIC BOOK 2 COMIC BOOK 3 COMIC BOOK 4 MERCHANDISE - DIE CAST FIGURES MERCHANDISE - MODELS MERCHANDISE - PLUSH TOYS MERCHANDISE - CLOTHES AND MISCELLANEOUS GAME CREDITS 3-0 PLAYING THE MINI GAMES: Here is a quick guide to playing each of the mini games. 3-1 COMMANDER IKARI'S STARING CONTEST: Controls: D-Pad only Task: Look at the reflection on Ikari's glasses and then repeat the pattern on the D-Pad. It gets harder with each level, so try to anticipate the sequence and memorize it. With each level, it gets faster and there one more move added to the sequence. Difficulty: Hard. I've only managed to finish it one, and that was with some mistakes. Get a friend to help you memorise the sequences and it will be easier. Challenge: Try to finish it without making a single mistake! 3-2 4TH ANGEL ATTACK: Controls: A, B, C, X, Y, Z. Task: You are the 4th Angel. You have to shoot down Unit-01 with your particle cannon. However, you have to find out which one is the "real" Unit-01 and which ones are the fakes. The real Unit-01 is the Eva with the GREEN shoulder compartments. You only get one shot per turn, so make it count. Press the button that corresponds to the building where Unit-01 appears. There are three rounds. If you make a mistake on the first round, you can keep going. But if you make a mistake on the second or third round, you get destroyed. Difficulty: Easy. I can get perfect every time. Challenge: Don't make a single mistake in all three rounds. 3-3 MAGMA DIVER: Controls: A - descend, B - ascend, Left/Right - move. Task: Taken directly from the TV series, you need to descend down to the bottom of the volcano and retrieve the Angel embryo. This game is split into three phases. You can only get hit five times before you lose. Here is a rundown of what to do: Phase 1: Descend down to the bottom of the volcano. But look out for the currents and the falling rock. PAR TIME: Less that 60:00 seconds. Phase 2: Ascend up to the surface of the volcano. But look out for the currents and the TWO falling rocks. PAR TIME: Less than 40:00 seconds. Phase 3: Catch the falling Progressive Knife to destroy the Angel. It usually falls to the right end of the screen. If you catch the knife, you get a GOOD rating for this phase. If you don't, you get a BAD. Difficulty: Hard. It's very easy to get hit by the falling rocks, and catching the Progressive knife isn't easy. Challenge: Try to get a perfect run. Get the fastest time by not losing any armouring and catching the knife. You get time added for each armour you damage. 3-4 EVA LAUNCHER: Controls: A - change shaft. Task: Get Unit-01 to the surface. You get indicated where Unit-01 starts and where it has to arrive. Your job is to switch access shafts and get Unit-01 to the proper exit. Plan out your route so to avoid the dead ends. You need to have ten seconds left to get an A rank. You get a B rank below that and a C rank for anything below eight seconds. Difficulty: Easy to medium. It's quite easy to get confused and make a mistake. Challenge: Try to get anything above ten seconds for an A rank. 3-5 PENPEN RACE: Controls: A - jump, Left - Slow Down, Right - Speed up. Task: You have to get PenPen to slide along the ground and grasp hold of the beer can on the floor. First, you press A to stop the slider and launch PenPen after the can. You can slow him down and speed him up so that he touched the can. This games is split into three levels: Level 1 - Regular floor. Level 2 - Another surface added (uneven or polished floor) Level 3 - Both surfaces added. The trick is to speed up on the uneven floor (which slows you down) and slow down on the polished floor (which speeds you up). Crashing into the can does not let you catch it, so don't even bother trying it. Difficulty: Easy to medium. Level 3 is a bit tricky. Challenge: Get the can on all three levels. 3-6 MISATO'S BEER GAMBLE: Controls: D-Pad. Task: I wasn't able to figure out this game. All I do know is that you have to walk around the map and use pokie machines. Line up cans of the same colour (red, green, brown), and it gets added to your tally. There is a timer, where Misato keeps drinking away. I think when you're making progress, Shinji is supposed to give you the thumbs up. That's what happened to me once when I managed to somehow win on a few pokie machines. If anyone knows how to play this game, then please feel free to contact me. Difficulty: Hard. Winning on the pokie machines ain't easy. A bit like real life, really. And I guess it helps if you know how to play this game. Challenge: Figure out how to play the game! 3-7 THE HUMAN WORK (JET ALONE): Controls: Right - Speed up, C - Slow down. Task: Unit-01 is chasing after the Jet Alone. Your task is to make sure Misato doesn't fall out of Unit-01's hand by either speeding up or slowing down. The indicator under Misato shows what to do. Difficulty: Easy. Once you get the hang of it, you'll blitz it every time. Challenge: Get to the Jet Alone without making a single mistake. 3-8 EVA PUZZLE: Controls: A - Move piece. Task: A basic puzzle where you have to rearrange the blocks to form the logo from the opening credits. Great fun for those who like puzzles like these. There's a ten minute limit to completing the puzzle, but sometimes when you move a block, PenPen appears and gives you another 20 seconds. Difficulty: Hard. There's a reason why you get ten minutes to solve the puzzle. Challenge: Solve the puzzle! 3-9 EVA QUIZ: Controls: A - Choice A, B - Choice B, C - Choice C. Task: Test your skills in this EVA quiz. But the problem is that the questions are in Japanese. But it's not a problem, as there is only about 20 questions and they start to repeat after a few times of playing the game. There are five questions. Difficulty: Hard. If you're an EVA fan, it should be easy. But only once you understand what the questions are about. 4-0 EXTRA GAME INFO: x. Is there any secrets in this game? - No. None that I know of. x. How do I get all of the cards? - You don't need to finish all of the mini games. Just keep playing your favourite mini games over, and over, and over again and you'll keep getting more cards. x. How do I know when I have all of the cards? - Trust me. When you get all of the cards, you'll know it. x. What are these "still" cards? - It's a cheap way of keep giving you cards once the game has been finished. However, you sometimes get it just before finishing the game. They have no impact on the game but to slow down your progress. x. I've finished the game. Is there anything else I can do? - No. You can view all of your cards and keep playing the mini games for the "still" cards. However, you can't collect the still cards, so it's pretty pointless to try to collect them. Once you finished the game, that's it. x. Are there any cheats for this game? - I don't know any. But you really don't need them. The game is easy enough to finish completely. 5-0 MERCHANDISE LIST: Once you unlock the merchandise cards, you will see all the EVA merchandise that was released in Japan by Sega, Bandai, and Kaiyodo.
