I'm happy with this documents current form. I may fix a few things up here and there, but nothing major. Version: 0.9 & Under Date: ??? COMMENTS: None of the previous versions saw a public release. Much of the info contained within them has been change drastically or taken out altogether. Everytime I'd start work on this I'd give up after not too long. When I went back again I'd delete all that I had done and start over. What you are reading now is many hours of hard work. I am still not pleased with the final product, but out of all the revisions I like this one the best. It makes a lot more sense and Features a lot more info. *^~CONTENTS~^* 1.Intro - Short introduction 2.What is NOON? - Basic explanation of the gameplay and how it works 3.Glossary - Explains meanings of various terms used throughout the FAQ 4.Back to School - Intro to Lessons -Mini Key - Key for the diagrams -Lesson 1 : The NOON -Lesson 2 : Rainbow NOON -Lesson 3 : The Combat Diaries -Lesson 4 : No Clever Titles, Just Items -Lesson 5 : Puttin it All Together 5.Characters - Character list with special attack descriptions 6.Items - Item list with descriptions 7.Contact/Copyright - Contact and Copyright info. 8.Thanks - "Thank you"s ____________ / INTRO \ --------------- NOON can be quite confusing at first. It took me a bit of time to learn how exactly the game works and I'm sure I'm not the only one. The purpose of this document is to teach you the basics to NOON. It really is a great game and it would be a shame for you to neglect it simply because you just can't figure out the rules. Hopefully this document will take out all of the guesswork and you can get on your way to mastering the game. To give you an idea of how NOON plays, imagine that Bomberman and Dr.Mario went and had a kid, then they beat the kid and gave him up for adoption. I know, they couldn't really have a kid as they are both males, but stay with me. What I am trying to say is that NOON plays like a bastardized version of a mix of Dr. Mario and Bomberman. I like to call it a battle puzzle game. The developers saw fit to call it a "New Type Action Game". In any event, I'm sure we can all agree that it is fun. The goal of this guide is to teach you the basics of the gameplay. This way you'll be able to spend your time mastering the game as opposed to learning how to play. ___________________ / What is NOON? \ ---------------------- Note: Check the Glossary section if any of these terms confuse you. Noon is a multiplayer puzzle game that allows up to four players. It takes the overhead gameplay style of Bombermen and mixes it with standard puzzle style gameplay. Your goal is to cover your opponents playfield with bombs. Bombs are made by connecting a row of three or more balls and attacking them, causing them to "explode" and reappear as bombs on your opponents playfield. This is called a NOON. There are five different colors: Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue and Multi/Rainbow. When lining up the balls, they must all be the same color. The lone exception being the multi color, or rainbow balls which you can mix with any one of the other colors. Rainbow balls are key to Rainbow NOONs. These are like regular NOONs only when the Rainbow Ball or balls explode it will make adjacent balls explode as well, regardless of color. Once you fill your opponents playfield with bombs a counter will begin to countdown from 10. Upon zero you will be victorious. If your opponent manages to clear a majority of the bombs from his playfield the counter will stop. If you fill his playfield again the counter will resume again from where it left off. Clearing the playfield of bombs requires you to either push them off manually or destroying them. To destroy them you simply have to push them either against a wall or another bomb/ball until it squishes. You can also squish normal balls. This can come in handy if balls of the wrong color are blocking a potential NOON or when you want to ruin an opponent's potential NOON. Another positive aspect of squishing balls is that it refills your special attack meter. Each character has their own special attack that ranges from filling your opponents playfied with bombs to lining up a row of same colored balls for a devastating NOON. In addition to the special attack, each character can attack directly. If the attack connects with an opponent it will send them flying across the screen. If they happen to hit a ball it will be destroyed. This is good for ruining an opponents potential NOON or just to annoy them. If you choose to play the one player mode, you will go up against bosses at set points. The boss fights are slightly different. The boss will attack you and everytime you are hit some bombs form on your playfield. If it fills completely the timer will start to countdown. If you don't clear your playfield before it reaches zero you lose. Unlike you, the boss has no playfield. Rather than forming bombs, performing chains will send balls to the boss. The boss has an energy bar and for every ball that hits some energy will be zapped out. When it reaches zero you win. Big chains are very important because the more balls in the chain the more damage it will do. Well, that about covers the basics. Check the "lessons" for more indepth information. Hopefully you now understand the basics. ______________ / Glossary \ ----------------- I will be using many terms throughout this guide that may not be too clear and will quite frankly confuse you. This section will offer "definitions" of the terms and examples. ATTACK - Refers to your character's standard attack. It can be used to attack opponents or balls sending them flying across the stage. If you send a ball into two or more like colored balls it will perform a NOON. Another way to perform NOONs is by lining them up and attacking them. Attacking an opponent will daze them. If they hit a ball that ball will be destroyed. BALL - Refers to the sphere shaped objects that litter the stage. These are the biggest part of NOON. Think of them as the blocks from tetris or the pills from Dr. Mario. They come in five different colors: Orange, Blue, Green, Yellow and Multi. You have to line three or more balls of the same color up to perform a NOON. In addition to using balls to make up NOONs you can also use them to attack or fill up your special meter. By squishing balls your special meter will go up. BOMB - Bombs are the result of NOONs. For each ball destroyed in a NOON one bomb will be created and placed on your opponents playfield. You cannot get a NOON with bombs. There are only two ways to clear them from your playfield. One is to push them off, possibly onto your opponents playfield. The other way is to squish them. Like balls, squishing bombs fills up your special meter. Attacking bombs does no good. They will not break, nor can you hit them and make them slide across the stage. MULTI COLORED BALLS - See RAINBOW BALLS NOON - The key to the game. Lining up three or more like colored balls and attacking them will result in a NOON. You can think of this as a line in Tetris. Performing NOONs creates bombson your opponents playfield. PLAYFIELD - A 5X2 or 2X5 set of blocks. It is your task to keep your's clean and fill your opponent's up. When the playfield has nine or more squares occupied by bombs and/or balls a countdown will begin. You have to clear the playfield before it reaches zero or you lose. Here is a rough diagram of a playfield. [][][][][] [][][][][] <---Playfield RAINBOW BALLS - Just like every other color of ball but with one difference. Wait, make that two differences. It is the only color ball that is compatible with all colors for one. In other words, if you have two orange balls but can't find a third you are free to use a Rainbow Ball instead. The Rainbow Balls will act like whatever color it is connected two. The other difference is the Rainbow NOON. You need to use a Rainbow Ball to pull off a Rainbow NOON. RAINBOW NOON - Achieved the same way as a NOON only you must have at least one Rainbow Ball in the NOON. Every Rainbow Ball in the NOON will result in a combo. The Rainbow Balls will explode and make adjacent balls explode regardless of their color. This comes in handy for clearing a cluttered area. SPECIAL ATTACK - Each character has their own unique special attack that can only be used when the special meter is full. For a description of each check out the character section. SPECIAL METER - Small meter that you fill up by squishing balls/bombs. A full meter is required to use a special attack. SQUISH - Technical term... What I mean by squish is when you push a ball or bomb either against a wall or another ball/bomb until it squishes into nothingness. Squishing not only makes room but it also refills your special meter. ____________________ / Back to School \ ----------------------- Lesson 0: The Tryanny of What Everybody Knows - Introduction to Lessons Lesson 0: The Tryanny of What Everybody Knows The following "lessons" are meant to give you the information in sections rather than making you hunt it down throughout the FAQ. Much of the info has been lifted from other sections of the FAQ so at times it may seem a little redundant. ______________ / Mini Key \ ----------------- Here is a key for the diagrams I will be using in the lesson sections. Please note that bomb is capital B and blue ball is lowercase. ___________ |BALLS/BOMB| ********************* | SYMBOL | NAME | | o | Orange | | g | Green | | b | Blue | | y | Yellow | | r | Rainbow | | B | Bomb | | W | Weight | ********************* _____________ |PLAYER/ENEMY| ******************* | SYMBOL | NAME | | % | Player | | ^ | Enemy | ******************* ________________________ / Lesson 1 : The NOON \ -------------------------- Lesson 1A: NOONing Dos, and Don'ts -Basic Explanation of a NOON Lesson 1B: Proper Line Dancing - Details Line Setup and Hit Location Lesson 1C: Let's Get Ready to NOON - Explains the Two Methods of NOON Lesson 1A: NOONing, Dos and Don'ts At the sake of being redundant I'll explain the basic principal of a NOON once more. Lining up three or more of the same color ball and then attacking it results in a NOON. NOONs are akin to lines in Tetris. A successful NOON will destroy the balls and have them reappear as bombs on your opponents playfield. To get a successful NOON you must have at least three of the SAME color. Mixing and matching colors will not work. To drive the point home even further I'll provide examples. /\/\/\/\/\/\ | CORRECT | \/\/\/\/\/\/ bbb ooo yyy ggg /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ | INCORRECT | \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ bbg bog yoy oob ggy boo boy ETC, ETC, ETC..... Lesson 1B: Proper Line Dancing To NOON you must set up lines of three or more like colored balls. Only straight lines work, diagonals are not accepted. Also, you must hit the ball from the end of a line toward the rest of the line. Check the example for more info. ------------------- |PROPER LINE SETUP| ------------------- ooo g g g --------------------- |IMPROPER LINE SETUP| --------------------- b b b y y y --------------------- |PROPER HIT LOCATION| --------------------- ooo% %ggg % y y y b b b % ----------------------- |IMPROPER HIT LOCATION| ----------------------- % ooo % ooo % ooo ooo % ooo % ooo % %b b b b %b b b b %b b% b b b b% b b b b% Lesson 1C: Let's Get Ready to NOON There are two ways of achieving a NOON, both of which involve the attack button. You can either walk up to a line and attack it directly or you can attack a ball so that it slides into at least two others of the same color which would also result in a NOON. For examples of the direct attack check out the previous examples of Hit Location. Those examples are also good for the "sliding ball" NOON. Just make sure you hit the ball at a proper hit location. _____________________________ / Lesson 2 : Rainbow NOON \ ------------------------------- Lesson 2A: Somewhere Over the Rainbow - How to Get a Rainbow NOON Lesson 2B: The Rainbow Difference - Difference Between Rainbow NOON-NOON Lesson 2A: Somewhere Over the Rainbow I assume you know how to make a NOON, if not go back and read Lesson 1. Everything from Lesson 1 applies to Rainbow NOONs, except for the bit about keeping the NOON one color. Rainbow NOONs are normal NOONs only they consist of all rainbow balls or a mix of rainbow balls and one other color. They have one other difference which I will get into later. You still need to have at least three balls to get a NOON. With a Rainbow NOON you can mix any one color with rainbow balls. You can only mix the rainbow ball with one other color per NOON. Here are some examples. --------------------------------- |ACCEPTABLE RAINBOW NOON CONFIGS| --------------------------------- rbb oro yyr rrg ETC, ETC, ETC.... ----------------------------------- |UNACCEPTABLE RAINBOW NOON CONFIGS| ----------------------------------- yrg rbo yor yrb ETC, ETC, ETC... Lesson 2B: The Rainbow Difference So, what's the big deal with Rainbow NOONs? The rainbow balls in rainbow NOONs have the power to explode and "take other balls with them," so to speak. When the rainbow balls explode they will cause adjacent balls, regardless of color to explode as well. In other words, these rainbow NOONs essentially extend the size of a NOON and send even more bombs to the opponent. With some strategic placement you can make a nice big NOON. Here is a horrid example. Hopefully the description was enough. Before ggy %bbr After gg % Even better is the fact that you can set off chain reactions. With a few strategically placed Rainbow balls you can set off a ton of "explosions" resulting in a load of bombs being dropped off at you opponents playfield. Something to not about the rainbow ball's power when used in a rainbow NOON, not only will it destroy adjacent balls it has the power to take out bombs as well. This can be a nice way to clear some bombs from you playfield. ___________________________________ / Lesson 3 : The Combat Diaries \ -------------------------------------- Lesson 3A: Let's Keep it Clean - Description of Lesson Lesson 3B: Fight Club - Importance of Standard Attacks Lesson 3C: The Art of Fighting - Description of the Effects of an Attack Lesson 3D: The Time to Strike is Now! - When to Attack Lesson 3E: You're Special - The Special Attack Lesson 3F: Dear Boss... - Boss Fight Explanation Lesson 3A: Let's Keep it Clean Now that we've got the standard NOON and Rainbow NOON covered we should talk about the combat system. We still have to discuss the standard attacks, special attacks, and even the boss battles for those that want to play in single player mode. The purpose of this lesson is to examine the combat system and how it should, or shouldn't, be used. Basically it's just an overview of NOON's combat system, or lack thereof. First on the list is the standard attack. Lesson 3B: Fight Club The standard attack may be more important than you give it credit for. As you should know, characters do *not* have an energy bar. No matter how many times you attack them, they won't die. Sure, you'll annoy them to no end but it really serves no purpose. That is understandable, after all NOON is more of a VS puzzle game than a battle game. It's not going to reward you for being a strong fighter. No matter how much you attack, the smarter player will still win at the end of the day. Brains are what counts. You can't win on brute strength alone. Wait a second, didn't I just get done saying that attacking is *more* important than you may think? From that last paragraph it seems as though I just contradicted myself. It looks as though I am stating that attacking is a waste of time. Well, it looks that way because that is exactly what I am saying. Attacking is a waste of time, if you do it blindly. As with the rest of the game you have to use your head when attacking. Any idiot can jam on the attack button. Knowing how to attack is unimportant. Knowing when to attack is the key. A strategically placed attack here and there can mean victory or defeat. Before we get into when you should attack, let's discuss what exactly an attack does. Lesson 3C: The Art of Fighting Unlike special attacks, everyone's standard attack has the same effect. The animation may be different, but they all accomplish the same thing: Sending your opponent sliding across the stage until something stops them. That something can be either a wall or a ball/bomb. When they hit a wall they will become dazed and unable to move for a short period of time. If they happen to slam into a ball, the ball will be destroyed and the character will also become dazed. Before you cheer, that's not all. Not only can you attack your opponent, you can also let loose on a ball. Just as the opponent, attacking a ball will send it sliding across the stage until it hits another ball, the opponent or a wall. The only time a ball will be destroyed by attacking it is when it hits an opponent. It will be destroyed on contact and the opponent will become dazed. Hitting the wall or another ball will have no effect apart from stopping its movement. As was stated elsewhere in this FAQ, no matter how many times you attack a bomb it will not be destroyed. You can however send them across the stage like balls, though the only ways to destroy them are by "squishing" them or hitting opponents with them. Rongo Rongo's special attack drops weights onto the stage. These weights cannot be attacked or pushed. The only way to get rid of them is to squish them. Lesson 3D: The Time to Strike is Now! Now that the basic principals of the attack are taken care of we can move on to how it should be used. First off, you should learn to take advantage of the various balls scattered throughout the stage. As you know by now, the balls are used in the process on making NOONs. Well, to significantly speed up the NOON making process you can hit a ball into a line of two or more like colored balls. This will result in a NOON, or Rainbow NOON depending on the color of balls involved. For example, let's say that you see a line of two green balls at the opposite end of the stage. In front of you is a green ball. Now, you can push the ball all the way across the stage for the NOON or you can attack it and send it sliding across the stage until it collides with the two green balls resulting in a NOON. Obviously the latter is much more time conscience. Another way to take advantage of the balls is to use them as a weapon. If you wish you can attack a ball and send it sliding towards an opponent. If it connects the ball will be destroyed and your opponent will become dazed for a short time. This is a good way of stopping an opponent from making a large NOON. It extends the range of your attack from one step in front of you to all the way across the screen. Just make sure you can aim good. Don't feel the need to stick to balls either. If you have an open shot, use a bomb in the same way. Just attack it so that it slides across the stage and smashes the opponent. This way you kill two birds with one stone. Not only do you daze your opponent you also clear your playfield of a bomb. Attacking enemies should only be done to stop them from getting a NOON, to get them away from an area or to slow them down. Attacking them for no reason is useless and accomplishes nothing but wasting time. It can also cause you to lose while playing a four player match. If you spend too much time attacking a player it will give your other opponents a chance to fill your playfield with bombs. Only attack when necessary and even then, make sure that is your best option. Attacking can be very helpful but it can also cause you to make many mistakes. Lesson 3E: You're Special Now for the special attack, remember how I said to take advantage of the scatterd balls earlier in the lesson? Well, that holds true for special attacks as well. To use special attacks you need to have a full special meter. To fill up your special meter you have to squish balls and/or bombs. So, whenever you see a unwanted ball, squish it. It should go without saying that you should squish any bombs yo find on your playfield. After enough are squished your meter will be full and your character will be glowing. You can now use a special attack. If that seems like a lot of work just keep an eye out for the item fills it automatically. I'll detail that in the next lesson(and the item section). Once filled up you can unleash a special attack at anytime by pressing the B Button. After one use the special meter resets and you have to refill it before using another special attack. The special attacks are different for each of the six characters. I detailed what they do in the Characters section along with a crappy diagram for each. I could go in depth here and give you tips on when and where to use the special attacks, but I think it should be obvious. Besides, you'd all die of boredom by the time I finished going into indepth detail on all six of them. Just use common sense and you will get along ok. Lesson 3F: Dear Boss... If you choose to play the Main Game Mode you will come across bosses at set points in the story. These boss battles vary slightly from the normal vs battles with human or CPU opponents. For one, the boss is many times bigger than you or any of the opponents you will face. In place of the boss's playfield is an energy bar. Rather than send bombs, getting a NOON will send the balls flying at the boss. For every ball destroyed in a NOON one ball will hit the boss. Each ball that hits will drain some of his life. When it is completely drained, you win. You, however, still have a playfield. Since the boss is so large he is unable to get NOONs so the only way he can beat you is by beating the snot out of you. Everytime you get hit by one of the boss's attacks some bombs will appear on your playfield. When filled, the counter will begin to count down just as in the VS mode. At zero you lose. Simple enough, eh? _____________________________________________ / Lesson 4 : No Clever Titles, Just Items \ ------------------------------------------------ Lesson 4A: What Are Items? - Explanation of Item Use Lesson 4B: Power to the People - Description of Helpful Items Lesson 4C: Make Them Suffer - Description of Offensive Items Lesson 4A: What Are Items? Items(aka power ups) in NOON are somewhat rare. They randomly appear on the stage. Walking over the item picks it up, just like the power ups in Bomberman. Each of the items will last a set mount of time and are actived on pick up. The effect can be instant such as the Switch Playfield item or over the course of time as with the Grow and Shrink items. Lesson 4B: Power to the People First on the plate are items that help your character. We'll start with Grow. The Grow power up makes your character grow in size for seven seconds. During this period you can squish balls or bombs simply by touching them. This is a good way to clear your playfield or remove unwanted balls that litter the screen. Keep an eye out, it's not always a good idea to destroy all of the balls. You'll want to keep some around for NOONs. Try to stick close to an opponent because at the end of the seven seconds your character will explode, leaving you dazed. If you are next to an opponent they too will become dazed. Now we have the Special Meter Fill which *SPOILER* fills your Special meter. *END SPOILER* (Lame, I know.) This item can be a big time saver. As was explained in the Combat lesson to fill your special meter normally you have to squish quite a few balls. This item cuts right to the point and gives you a full meter. I think it obvious to note that should you already have a full meter, use your special attack before picking this item up. Next up is the Switch Playfield item. This instantly switches your playfield with your opponent's. Unfortunately, as with all items the effect is instantaneous so you are unable to save the item and use it at a key point in the match. Thanks to this, it is very important that you think before picking it up. If your opponent has a worse playfield than it would obviously be very stupid to switch with them. Since opponents can use items as well it is especially important that you keep them away from this. It's not too funny when you are kicking the snot out of your opponent only to have the tides turn because he got to this item. Lesson 4C: Make Them Suffer Now we can discuss the items that harm your opponents. Some may argue that the Switch Playfield item belongs here, but I feel it is more at home with the helpful items. First up to bat is the Shrink item. This item does exctly as promised, it shrinks your opponent. I hate to say it but I am not exactly sure as to why this is good in anyway. Oh well, it looks funny. Remember the Grow item and how it makes you explode after seven seconds? Well the Bomb item makes your opponent explode instantly. They will become dazed for a few seconds after the explosion. ________________________________________ / Lesson 5 : Putting it All Together \ ------------------------------------------- Lesson 5A: Now You Know.... - What you can do with your newfound knowledge Lesson 5B: ...And Knowing is Half The Battle - Final Tips Lesson 5A: Now You Know.... So, by now NOONs and their Rainbow counter parts should be known. The intricacies of combat and item use should now be taking residence in your skull. So, what now? Now it's up to you. I've done all that I can do. It's up to you to take your newfound knowledge and put it to good use. Practice makes perfect after all. The purpose of this document is not to make you a good player. No document can do that. What I've set out to do is give you the information you need to have a shot at being good at the game. I've attempted to cut out the learning process so you can dive right in and get your hands dirty. My intentions with this guide were to show you what exactly NOON is and how you are supposed to play it. I for one was completely confused when I got it and the tutorial that comes with it just isn't good enough if you can't read Japanese. After visiting many Message Boards I've come to notice that I'm not alone. I'm not quite sure what it is that makes NOON so tough to understand. Once you learn it it seems so simple that there is no way you could've been confused. It just seems so obvious. This FAQ is a long time in the making. I've started it and never finished numerous times in the past. Every now and then I'd pick it up and work on it, but something always stopped me from finishing it. Well, if you are reading this now I apparently kicked myself enough to actually finish this up. I hope this helps you out. Now, get out there and use what I've taught you..... Lesson 5B: ...And Knowing is Half The Battle Here are some final tips for you. Just random tidbits of information that I haven't stuck anywhere else. 1. Don't forget about the Left and Right triggers(aka the L and R buttons). If you hold either in you can rotate your character without moving in that direction. For example, let's say you were facing right and you want to turn to face left. If you press left on the dpad your character will take a step left. If you hold the L or R trigger your character will simply turn around. 2. Try not to get carried away making a large NOON. You run the risk of your opponent stealing the NOON. While large NOONs yeild the best results they are obviously the hardest to pull off. As with all puzzle games use your best judgement. Don't get greedy! 3. Be wary of the rainbow NOON. Try not to set off a rainbow NOON near an opponent's playfield. If any bombs are touching the rainbow balls they will explode just like balls. It's never a good idea to clear out your opponent's playfield. 4. The "Switch Playfield" item is good when your playfield is full but your opponent's is empty but when the situation is flipped, be careful. Try not to mistakenly grab the item and make sure you keep your opponent away from it. One wrong switch and everything could be over. Just remember to take a look before you go and grab an item. The same goes for the Grow item. Make sure you actually want to destroy the balls and bombs around you before you pick it up. You cannot get any NOONs while the item is in effect. You could easily destroy some potentially good NOONs. 5. Attacking the balls to move them is much quicker than pushing them. If you have to move a ball all the way across screen just attack it. Just make sure it has a clear path before attacking it. If it come into contact with an opponent it will be destroyed. Obviously if you only have to move the ball a short distance it is better to push it but for long distances a simple attack can't be beat. ________________ / Characters \ ------------------- +_______+ |Rimuria| +^^^^^^^+ Special Attack : Creates a line of three Rainbow balls. The items aren't always helpful. In the case of the Switch Playfield item, it would be very stupid to pick up if your playfield is empty while your opponents is filled. These aren't the actual names of the items, they are just what I refer to them as. I will offer a description of what the item looks like so you can tell the difference. GROW(Silhouette of a flexing man) - Upon pickup a countdown from seven will begin. You will grow in size until the countdown reaches zero, upon which time you will explode. The explosion will return you back to normal size and daze you and any surrounding opponents. While you are growing you destroy balls on contact. SWITCH PLAYFIELD(Arrows) - Picking up this item will switch your playfield with your opponents. Can be good or bad depending on the situation. SPECIAL METER FILL(Explosion) - Completely fills your special meter. SHRINK(Shrinking silhouette) - Opponent shrinks. BOMB(...bomb, duh!) - Causes your opponent to explode and become dazed. _______________________ / Contact/Copyright \ -------------------------- Questions/Comments?Email me at: Discworld6@aol.com Corrections? email me at: Discworld6@aol.com Email submissions to: Discworld6@aol.com Be sure to include the name you would like to be credited as and if you want me to post your email address. Also(Very important),Put [Name of Game} Submission. That way I can find it easier when updating.
