Why write a FAQ? (A1) | o=================================o Hello again, I am Leeor Vardi, AKA I.T.P, and this is my second FAQ. Lumines II is a great game, being a fan and a vetern of the original Lumines I found it extremely odd that no FAQs were being produced for this much longer much better and much more difficult game. in fact, the only thing this game is missing IMO is the 4 licensed tracks from the original Lumines. o=================================o | II. What is Lumines? (A2) | o=================================o Lumines is a game by tetsuya mizuguchi, in Lumines, not unlike tetris you drop Squares made of 4 Blocks each of 1 out of 2 colors and try to form as many whole colored squares as you can. However, and this is what makes lumines so good, Deletes do not occur until the Time Line sweeps over them. the speed of the Time Line is diffrent from Skin to Skin, and is mostly relevant to the BGM played, also as in Karnaugh maps(for those of you who haven't studied electronics, it's an implementation of truth tables for indicating binary functions) the same Block can be counted in multiple Deletes. Also, the greatest thing about Lumines, is that each and every event in the game, including rotating a Square, moving it, dropping it, making a Delete and more, triggers it's own SE. which is integrated with the BGM ingeniously. o=====================================================o | III. What are the diffrences between Lumines (A3) | | and Lumines II? | o=====================================================o There are a lot of similarities between Lumines I and Lumines II. For the most part, the entire Gameplay mechanism aside from score and appearance has not been changed at all. therefore i will not expand on it in this FAQ aside from basic knowlegde and advanced strategies. if you're looking for gameplay info and help, please refer to FAQs for the original Lumines, there are plenty of those on GameFAQs.com. The main diffrences are in the game modes. Puzzle Mode has been buffed up considerably, there's a new mission mode. challange mode has been redone and split into difficulties(plus a special Endurance challange), There's the new Sequencer, a new Skin Edit mode that allows custom playlists and Single lap challange, Time attack remained, VS cpu mode is there, and you can also edit some cool options to personalize your game. Other notable features: Saveable replay data for 60 seconds time attack, Every Extend Extra demo, a Game Sharing option to share a Lumines II demo, 3 save game slots, a very complete Database to track your progress and records and a robust Skin list - 97 Skins in all! o=================================o | IV. Basic Info (A4) | o=================================o Lumines II was released in the US on 06\11\06 by Buena Vista games as ULUS10183, originally developed by Q? entertainment and priced at 30$. It was also released in the EU on 17\11\06, and is to be released in Japan on the 15\02\07. The Japanese version is rumored to have diffrent Licensed tracks then the US version. o=================================o | V. Teminology (A5) | o=================================o These are the Terms i have used so far and intend to use in this FAQ: ===================================================================== SE - abbriviation for Sound Effects BGM - abbriviation for BackGround Music Skin - a stage of the game, consisting of Block shape and color, background animation and music, sound effects, and Time Line speed. Block - one fourth of a square, can only have one color. color changes per skin Square - the basic playing piece of Lumines, consists of 4 Blocks in a 2x2 form Delete - a Square of one color, made either naturally or by the player. Time Line - the scanning line that runs through the screen. the speed of the the line is determined by the songs Tempo setting, and deletes occur when the line passes over them. Destroyer - a special block that destroys all linked same coloured blocks. Figure - a diagram of a play field state and it's consequences o============================================================================o |2.Options (B) | o============================================================================o The game features the following options: Console Edit: Lumines II let's you customize the User interface used in Challenge mode. you may choose between Right,Up,Down or no shadow display positions. and you also get to choose the play field grid colour, between White,Orange,Purple,Yellow,Red and Gray Save Game : Lumines II uses manual saving!!! it can be accessed from mostly anywhere in the menu by pressing Start. you have 3 save slots to choose from. Load Game : Self Explanatory, load a previously saved game. when loading you can see when the save was last used and what's the play time counter. Delete Save : Delete a Save game. The game also Features a Demo of Every Extend Extra, another Tetsuya Mizuguchi Game that was simultanously released with Lumines. and also a Game sharing feature allows you to share a Demo of this game with any other PSP. o=================================o | I. The Basics (D1) | o=================================o Every game needs its basics. so here is a basic overview of how Lumines(and Lumines II, coincidentally ;-) ) work. the game has you controlling falling Squares, each of which consists of 4 Blocks in a 2x2 manner. Each Block has a colour, and each Skin(the stages of the game) has diffrent colours, so far so good right? Now, what makes this game far more addictive, and interesting than playing tetris with the 2x2 block only, is a number of factors. a Delete is basically any 2x2 structure in the board that is of 1 colour. a single Block can be counted in up to 4 deletes. and thus a 3x3 structure, is counted as 5 deletes. a Delete only gets erased from the board when the Time line, a vertical line that scans the board in a set tempo(that differs by Skin), goes over it, thus allowing you to broaden your Deletes and add to them before that happens. Still sounds average? add in 97!!! diffrent skins, some of which use copyright music tracks with their own music videos, a whole bunch of modes, some of which play very diffrently than the main game, and variety of cute character icons to represent the player, and it makes one great game :) o=================================o | II. The Squares (D2) | o=================================o Lumines has 16 types of Squares, which are rotatable and are actually vary from 4 major types. I will now name them and their uses: Blank\Full: the basic Square, all 4 of it's Blocks are of the same colour, if dropped normally on an even ground, will turn into 1 delete. XX YY XX or YY Single\Triple: a very usefull square, this will consist of 50% of what you get so learning to use it properly is essential. can be dropped on a single block to make a delete, or on a tower twice to make subsequent deletes and easy combos. XX or XX or YX or XY or YY or YY or YX or XY XY YX XX XX XY YX YY YY Pair: a very basic two rows of 2 colours. very usefull in adding to existing Deletes or building new Deletes in a clean manner. its basically 25% of the Squares you'll get, so learning it is essential. the most easily dealt with Square in the game in this Writer's opinion. XX or YY or XY or YX YY XX XY YX Duece\Checker block: this is the troublemaker for most lumines players, especially gets to rookies who are not used to it. it is basically a XOR logic gate, I.E Diagonal blocks are the same colour. as a single Square it is harmless, but as a pattern it is extremely deadly, for simple solutions on how to use this Square, please see Lumines's Checker block FAQ on Gamefaqs.com or the Strategies section of this FAQ. o=================================o | III. Deletes (D3) | o=================================o The Deletes in the game occur similarly to Karnaough's map for those of you that are educated in logic and Binaric math. That means that any Block can take place in up to 4 Deletes, meaning that while Figure 1 is the basic delete , figures 2,3 and 4 are all examples of 2 deletes. Figure 1 Figure 2 Figure 3 Figure 4 ======== ======== ======== ======== XX XX XXX XX XXYY XX XXX XX XXYY Now deleting is one thing, dealing with what's left of a Delete is another. A good use of a Triple is shown in Figures 5 and 6, and a normal solution for a Deuce is in Figure 7(| = will fall), Figure 6 turns to Figure 8 and 7 to 9 for those that don't figure it out ;-) Figure 5 Figure 6 Figure 7 Figure 8 Figure 9 ======== ======== ======== ======== ======== YY YX XY XX YX YX| XY XX| YX| YX YX|| XY| XX XX|| YX|| YYYYY X| X||| XY|| YYY XYYYY -------- -------- -------- -------- -------- Also note that the Deletes passed over only dissapear once the Time Line finishes passing all subsequent Deletes, so be carefull if you're waiting for a combo Delete to dissapear in order to drop in a Block. If you would like a strategy section with samples that look like these, please say so in the Gamefaqs.com\Gamespot.com Shared Lumines II Messege board. o=================================o | IV. Score (D4) | o=================================o Sample Score chart ================== 1 Delete - 40 Pts 2 Deletes - 80 Pts 3 Deletes - 120 Pts 4 Deletes - 640 Pts*B 5 Deletes - 800 Pts*B 6 Deletes - 960 Pts*B 7 Deletes - 1,120 Pts*B 8 Deletes - 1,280 Pts*B 9 Deletes - 1,440 Pts*B 10 Deletes - 1,600 Pts*B Score for Deletes is rewarded only at the end of a Time Line Pass. As you can see, the formula for the score is very simple: score for X Deletes = (640 + 160(X-4)) * B Which becomes Score(X)=160XB I.E: score(10)=1600B, Score(30)=4800B B=Number of subsequent passes with over 4 deletes. max is B=4 Fast dropping rewards X Points, when X= number of miliseconds drop time*10 I.E: dropping a block for 1 second will award you 10 Pts. Also, note that when X = -1, the score is 640\4, when -2 the score is 640\8 and when -3 the score is 640\16. o=================================o | V. Special Blocks (D5) | o=================================o Also worthy of its own subsection is the Special Block. the Special Block, hereon referred to as a Destroyer, can basically appear instead of any one normal Block in any Square, it is identified by a cross hair mark inside of the Block that peculiarly resembles the suicidal cursor that is Every Extend Extra. Now that's all nice and cute, but what does it do? well that's a good question , when used in any Delete, the Destroyer will highlight all the Blocks(notice Blocks! not Squares!) of the same colour that are directly linked to it and those linked to the ones linked to it and so on. when the Time Line passes over any of those highlighted Blocks, they will be deleted but with no score value. this can save you in a pinch, but it can also unintently destroy a well designed combo, so it is a mixed blessing. Also important to note, is that if the Destroyer itself is not among the Blocks that are deleted, it will remain on the play-field and continue to function as a Destroyer. this can be usefull at times. Deletions by Special Blocks are not counted as Deletes and give no additional score, so don't fuss over using it. o=================================o | VI. Special Deletes (D6) | o=================================o Special Deletes occur when the Time Line passes over a Delete while it is Made I.E: a Falling piece of a block forming a Delete mid-air, or a Delete being registered while the time line is half through it(resulting in a half Delete) This is also a mixed blessing. because they can save you when you're not expecting them, or destroy you when you have no choice. learning to control these is virtually impossible beyond the basic level of skill, which is to forsee them, they're most usefull with destroyers, which result in Deletes like these a lot, but can also be usefull when you Want! to have only half of your Square removed. Think about it and play around with it. you won't regret doing so. o============================================================================o |5.Game Modes (E) | o============================================================================o o=================================o | I. Challange Mode (E1) | o=================================o The challenge mode is the main mode of the game, it Divides into Challenges B,A and S. Each is Respective to a difficulty level and each has 22 Diffrent Skins that are unlocked by passing them in the challenge mode. Note that while the Normal Lumines Play Field is 16X10, Challenge mode A is Played on a 16X9 Play Field, and Challeng mode S is played on 16X8. If you manage to complete 1 Lap in each of the Challenges(a Lap means passing all 22 Skins) you'll unlock Challange E(Enduro). which plays all 66 Skins in Succession on a 16X10 normal Play Field. o=================================o | II. Skin Edit Mode (E2) | o=================================o Skin Edit mode allows to view the skins you've obtained, and play them at any order that you decide on. You can play Endlessly - keeping no high scores or stats besides play time, or you can play Single Lap, which will run once through the First 10 Skins in your play list. Single Lap mode allows you to unlock 2 extra characters by Getting X Pts. In single Lap mode, your statistics are saved, as seen in the Database section of this FAQ. Note that you may also save and name any play list you make into your Memory Stick, so that you won't need to rebuild it when you want to play it. o=================================o | III. VS CPU Mode (E3) | o=================================o VS CPU Mode pits you against Computer controlled characters in a tourney that has 10 rounds each harder than the previous. For each beaten round you unlock a new Skin and a new Character. The VS method is simple yet ingenius, you each play on a 8X10 play field with a Separating line in the middle. For each pass of the Time Line, your Deletes are compared to the opponents Deletes, and the winner gains the middlemost column from the loser, and thus the fields turn to 9X10 - 7X10, 10X10 - 6X10 while 4X10 is the minimum play field size a player can have. A tie in Deletes results with the separating line staying in place. o=================================o | IV. Time Attack Mode (E4) | o=================================o Time Attack mode(AKA TA mode) puts you in a special Skin not playable anywhere else for either 60,180,300 or 600 secs, in which you are challenged to make as many Deletes as possible. there're a Total of 12 Unlockable Characters from the 4 Diffrent time attack modes. Each of the 4 modes keeps up to 20 High Scores, and the 60 seconds mode has an option to save the replay of your current game into the memory stick for later viewing, up to 10 replays can be saved. T.B.A - a Time Attack strategy section. o=================================o | V. Puzzle Mode (E5) | o=================================o Puzzle mode is a special mode in which you build special shapes using the Lumines Squares in order to clear them. The puzzles get increasingly harder and there are overall 100 Puzzles divided into Easy(1-40),Hard(41-70) and Very Hard(71-100). Each group must be completed in order to unlock the next group, and the completion of each group also unlocks 1 Skin, while the completion of the last group unlocks an additional Skin. The basic principal of puzzle mode is that you cannot have any of the Blocks making the shape touch a same coloured Block that is not part of the shape. You are also not allowed to have any Diffrent coloured Blocks inside the Shape but are allowed any number of them outside of it. In some of the later puzzles you are given more than one shape to make. In which cases you must make each of the shapes in the order given. T.B.A - a Puzzle Mode Solution guide. o=================================o | VI. Mission Mode (E6) | o=================================o Mission Mode lets you test your skill in pre-defined missions. ranged from clearing a certain situation with specific blocks, getting X Deletes in a Time Limit, or solving pinch situations fast enough. The missions get increasingly harder and there are overall 50 Puzzles divided into Easy(1-15),Hard(16-30) and Very Hard(31-50). Each group must be completed in order to unlock the next group, and the completion of each group also unlocks 1 Skin, while the completion of the last group unlocks an additional Skin. Duel Mode (E7) | o=================================o Duel Mode allows you to compete with a friend via Wi-Fi Ad-Hoc Connection. Any of either Player's unlocked Skins may be played. The results of the match are kept on Database mode. o=================================o | VIII.
