I will also review this game myself eventually. o=================================o | II. What is Gunpey? (A2) | o=================================o Gunpey is a puzzle X music game, not unlike Lumines, in which your goal is to create Lines that go from one horizontial edge of the Playing field to the other as fast as you can. The original concept was designed by Gunpei Yokoi, the man responsible for such things as Metroid, the Game boy, Kid Icarus, the Virtual boy, and the WonderSwan. Gunpey was one of his last game concepts which originally came as a WonderSwan title. Q Entertainment's Tetsuya Mizuguchi decided to revive this game, by remaking it as he sees fit. One of gunpey's features, which make the game interesting and fast paced, is that every move and every delete that happens makes it's own timed sound effect or music effect, that corresponds to the events in-game and has an effect on the background "Skin" as well. The original gunpey and Tarepanda no Gunpey are for the WS console. there was also Gunpey EX for the Wonder Swan Crystal, Gunpey for the PS and Gunpey DS, which was released simultanously as this game. they're all great games even though I personally only played this and Gunpey DS(for a bit). o=================================o | III. Basic game info (A3) | o=================================o Gunpey was realesed in the US on the 17\11\06. as ULUS-10182 at a price of 29.99$, the game was developed by Q Entertainment and was published by Namco\Bandai games. o============================================================================o |2.Controls (B) | o============================================================================o The game Controls are as follows: Type A: ======= Directional pad : Move the cursor. hold for faster movement. Square\Triangle button : switch lower block with upper block Cross\Circle button : advance the playfield one row up L\R button : switch between skins(Double skin mode only) Analog Nub(Any direction): advance the playfield one row up Type B: ======= Directional pad : Move the cursor. hold for faster movement. Cross\Circle button : switch lower block with upper block Square\Triangle button : advance the playfield one row up L\R button : switch between skins(Double skin mode only) Analog Nub(Any direction): advance the playfield one row up o============================================================================o |3.Options (C) | o============================================================================o The game features an options mode with the following settings: Save Game: The game requires MANUAL SAVING!!!! into 1 of 3 slots available. Load Game: Load a previously saved game from either of the 3 slots. Edit Name: Allows you to name your save file Controls : Allows you to switch between control type A or B Note that the game has 3 save slots. each with a name, skin count and Clock. the game requires MANUAL SAVING. make sure not to lose your progress. Also note that the in-game Pause screen contains a volume setting for SFX and Music o============================================================================o |4.Game Mechanics (D) | o============================================================================o o=================================o | I. The Basics (D1) | o=================================o The objective in gunpey, is to Line up the diagnols in a way that connects the leftmost part of the screen with the rightmost part. to do that, you control a 2 panel tall cursor which you slide on the play field, and each press of Triangle or Square(changable via control options) switches whatever piece is in the upper panel of the cursor with the piece in the lower panel. Empty panel on one side will result in moving the piece one panel up\down. The normal Gunpey Playfield is 5X10, 5 panels wide and 10 panels tall. The pieces will appear randomly throughout the lower most row each time that the field is advanced upwards, this can happen manually(Cross or Circle) or automatically(frequency of this happening changes by skin). The game is devided by skins, each skin consists of a background,music and sound effect sets, all of which are vibrantly effected by each Line you make, each move of the cursor, and each press of any button or any event mid-game. What makes this game so difficult,is that you cannot move pieces left or right and also that the farther you get, the faster the field will advance upwards on it's own. o=================================o | II. The Pieces (D2) | o=================================o Gunpey has only 4 types of Line pieces as the following shows: (abbriviations were used for comfort in describing mechanics DR: Diagonal Right, looks like this / DL: Diagonal Left, looks like this \ PU: Peak Up, looks like this ^ PD: Peak Down, looks like this v o=================================o | III.Connections (D3) | o=================================o Each piece can be connected diffrently via 2 connection points(CPs) each panel has 4 CPs, Bottom Left(BL), Upper Left(UL),Upper Right(UL) and Bottom Right(BR). think of them as the corners of each square. The CP - piece table is as follows: DR piece: BL and UR DL Piece: UL and BR PU piece: BL and BR PD piece: UL and UR Very important to note, is that each CP can be connected to 3 pieces . meaning a DL piece with it's BR CP, can be connected simultanously to a PU\DR from the panel on the right of it, a DL\PD from the panel below and to the right.and a DR\PD from the panel below. This makes it so that DR and DL pieces, can be connected to 6 diffrent pieces. |\/X| |/\/| a DL Piece connected to 6 pieces. |X/\| X = Dead spot PU and PD pieces can be connected to 5 diffrent pieces. |XXX|this is a bit harder to see, but the PU is connected |/^\|to a DR on the left, a DL on the right, a DR on the bottom left |/\\|a DL on the bottom(connected to the PU's BL) and a DR on the bottom right This also makes for Dead spots. as DR pieces cannot be connected to the diagonally up-left and bottom right panels, and DLs cannot be connected to the up-right and bottom-left panels. in that same manner. PU cannot be connected to panels above it, while PD cannot be connected to panels below it. keep these in mind! This is extremely important as it allows you to branch a Line into multiple Lines and thus add more pieces to be deleted. o=================================o | IV.Lines (D4) | o=================================o Lines are the "Deletes" of the game, to form a Line, you must connect pieces from the left end to the right end of the field. Lines are divided into the diffrent following types: (Sorted by difficulty) Basic Line: a Basic Line is one path, rarely goes up or down and usually consists of 5 or so pieces. Ex: |\/^\/| , |\ /\ | , |V\^\/| etc' | V V| Tailed Line: a Tailed Line is a Line which has multiple pieces in places where a single piece would suffice. Ex: a PU piece with a PD piece Below it, causing it to belong into the line. these lines mostly get to 6-9 pieces. Ex: |/\/\/| is a basic line, but add a |VV \| and it becomes an 8 piece tailed line. Zig Zag Line: a Zig Zag Line is a Line in which a column has 2 or more pieces while the topmost piece is connected to one side and the bottom most piece to the other. making it stay in one path and still be deleted as one Line. Ex: |^\ | | / | | \ /\| is a 7 piece Zig Zag line. | V | Diverged Line: a Diverged Line is a Line that splits into Multiple Lines in the middle, thus making for a lot of pieces deleted at once and higher point value. a diverged line mostly requires more then one finishing piece in either side of the field, making achieving such a Line much harder than it looks. Ex: |\/\/\| |/\ | is a 10 piece diverged line | \/\| making this requires the leftmost panel to be the finishing piece, or the right upper panel to be moved up while the line is waiting deletion. Dual Line: a Dual Line is actual two seperate any other type lines formed in the same delete frame and deleted together. this gives for a huge combo\points value. Ex: |\/^\/| while | | |\ /\/| exists in the same time. | V | Each time you form a line, the field stops pushing upwards until the Line is deleted(approximatly 5 seconds), in this time, you can add pieces to the line (making a tailed\diverged line) and you can move pieces above the line pieces as if they weren't there. you can also make the nessecary connections for the next Line, or make another line for a Dual Line delete. also, you can use this time to move down pieces that are in dangerous positions. and prepare Chain Lines. The downside is, that in this time you are stuck with what you get, no new pieces will enter the board. and you also can't move the pieces forming the current Line, and they're marked in a special colour to show it(yellow mostly) be very careful not to create accidential Basic Lines while moving the last piece of a Diverged or Zig Zag Line, this can be extremely frustrating and dangerous. o=================================o | V. Score (D5) | o=================================o The score in Gunpey is very simple. each number of pieces deleted has a score value as seen in this table: 5 Pieces 500 Pts. 6 Pieces 1200 Pts. 7 Pieces 2100 Pts. 8 Pieces 3200 Pts. 9 Pieces 4500 Pts. 10 Pieces 6000 Pts. 11 Pieces 7700 Pts. 12 Pieces 9600 Pts. 13 Pieces 11700 Pts. 14 Pieces 14000 Pts. 15 Pieces 16500 Pts. as you can see, there's a simple formula for this. Score for X = Score for X-1 +500+200*X-5 Ex. - score for 6= score for 5(500) + 500 + 200*6-5 = 1200 score for 11= score for 10(6000)+500+200*11-5 = 7700 Contributed by Chris Hayashida: =============================== The score can be narrowed to an even better formula. because if you look at it Y(5) = 500 Y(6) = 500+500 + 200 Y(7) = 500+500+500 + 200+200+200 Y(8) = 500+500+500+500 + 200+200+200+200+200+200 The first part becomes 500(x-4). the second part becomes triangle number of x-5 * 200, so using the triangle numbers(pascal's triangle) formula, you get triangle number X = X(X-1)\2, since we start at X=6, its (x-5)(x-4) Once you use that you get Y(x) = 500(x-4) + 200((x-5)(x-4))\2 that can be narrowed: Y(x) = 500x - 2000 + 100X^2 -900x +2000 which becomes Y(x) = 100X^2 - 400x, which becomes Y(x)=100X(X-4) And so the final score formula is score(x)=100X(X-4) I.E: score(30) = 3000(26) = 78000 =============================== Also, if you manage to leave the playfield empty after any Line. the score for that Line will be Score for X Line + 10000 If you make a chain Line(a Line that is automatically made using a piece that was placed over a "Deleted" piece, or above one and fell to form a line) you get a 1000*X Points bonus, where X = The number of pieces in the formed Line. I.E : you formed a 15 piece Line that when dissapearing made the remaining 8 Pieces form an 8 piece Line, you will get 16500 Pts for the first Line, + an 8000 Pts bonus from the chain, and 2100 Pts from the formed 7 piece Line with a bonus of 10000 Pts for clearing the play field. The game will record your high score and Max combo per mode seperately. but only one high score per mode. Double skin only: if you make a Lines in skin A while skin B has a waiting to be cleared Line, you'll get a 1000 points bonus. abuse it!. o=================================o | VI. Rules (D6) | o=================================o Before each game, the game allows you to choose between normal and break rules Original Rules: each Line will not effect any of the other pieces in the field This is the harder rule set. taken directly from the Original gunpey WS, this rule set is not Recommended to people new at the game Break Rules: each Line will make any piece above it "Fall" one row This is the easier rule set. Recommended to people new at the game. o=================================o | VII. Tips (D7) | o=================================o - The game stops each time a Line is formed, using this time you can drag down pieces, form Dual Lines,Tailed Lines and Diverged Lines, or just line up Pieces so they look nice to your eyes ^J^ - Manually pushing the field with the X button is a neccesity if you want to make large combos early and play fast. make sure to abuse this option to your advantage. - Contrasting Tip #2, pushing the field manually in fast skins can be destructively bad. avoid pushing the field if you have anything above row 5. - Allways plan ahead. make sure you are not stranded or losing just because you can't get a piece in the right column. use this "Alone" time to find the best and safest possible arrangment for the rest of the pieces in the field. - Slide the cursor! it can save you and help you when you don't realize it. - Double skin mode: stopping one field is not stopping the other. use this time to complete lines in the second field for higher score! - 10x10 mode: a Zig Zag Line is not hard to make, transform your normal lines into Zig Zags, and it'll make room for Diverging them, this can build ridiculously large combos very fast. - Even the simplest Line can be tailed easily. try making |/^\/\| this tail(Half zig zag) |^^/\/| this tail(heart) |\ | OR |\/ | |/ | | | = Avoid dead spots! never make this line |^^^^^| if you have any pieces above it unless you have no other choice or need the clearing time. o=================================o | VII. This is the mode in Which you will be playing most of the time. as it is the mode that allows you to unlock more skins for the other modes. the skins are allways in the same order, and you allways have to start from the first. The game keeps track of your "Stage" at this mode. This is basically to show you in which number of skin you are now in. Before starting, the game prompts you to choose "Original" or "break" rules Note: Using the Quick Start option on the main menu is equivalent to playing this mode with "Break" rules. Assumption: the skin changes when you clear X pieces. as shown by the Cleared number on the right. I NEED HELP PROVING THIS. o=================================o | II.Single Skin (E2) | o=================================o This mode allows you to play any of the allready unlocked skins for as much as you desire. it is exactly the same as Challenge mode in every way except that the chosen skin will not change no matter how much time you play. This mode is to be used whenever you want to enjoy a skin you have unlocked normally without getting to it in Challenge mode. The game keeps track of your "Level" at this mode. the higher the level, the faster pieces will come up by themselves. Before starting, the game prompts you to choose "Original" or "break" rules High scores are NOT skin specific. o=================================o | III.Double Skin (E3) | o=================================o This mode allows you to play any 2 of the unlocked skins at once. This works in that you see the second skin mini-sized at the right\left part of the screen, and pressing L\R will switch real time between the skins so that you can play them simultanously. The game keeps track of your "Level" at this mode. the higher the level, the faster pieces will come up by themselves. Also note that the secondary skin(the unactive one) moves at half the speed of the primary skin. this is to make things more possible. Before starting, the game prompts you to choose "Original" or "break" rules High scores are NOT skin specific. o=================================o | IV. 10X10 Mode (E4) | o=================================o In this mode you play a special Gunpey field of 10X10 instead of the normal 5X10. this means each line will have to be a minimum of 10 pieces wide. but it also means you'll get a lot more points and pieces and combos more easily. try this mode for fun. The game keeps track of your "Level" at this mode. the higher the level, the faster pieces will come up by themselves. Before starting, the game prompts you to choose "Original" or "break" rules High scores are NOT skin specific. o=================================o | V. Time Attack Mode (E5) | o=================================o This mode you play Single Skin or Double Skin gunpey for 60,90 or 120 seconds in either "Original" or "Break" rules and try to rack up as many points as you can and create the largest combos you are able to create. Both of these statistics are saved automatically. and are viewable in the rule setting screen. The high scores are mode specific, so 60 sec Single\Double, 90 sec Single\Double and 120 sec Single\Double all keep your score and combo max for you. but the skins you play do not get seperate high scores. o=================================o | VI.
