This guide is to help you in surviving online play. Online isn't exactly like single player mode. There a few differences that I will go over shortly. Online play is fun, though sometimes it's hard to find people to start a game with. This does though significantly add to the value of the game. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ |C|o|n|t|e|n|t|s| +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ 1. Basics 2. Online Differences 3. Characters 4. Mode Descriptions 5. Weapons 6. Arenas 7. Strategies 8. In Case of Cheaters 9. Legal Information +-+-+-+-+-+-+ |B|a|s|i|c|s| +-+-+-+-+-+-+ Note: Online controls vary SLIGHTLY to those in the manual. Controls: X- Select (Menu Only) Square- Change Weapon Square (Hold)- Pick up new Weapon Triangle- Throw Grenade O- Reload Manually R1- Primary Fire R2- Secondary Fire R3- (unused) L1- Jump L2- Crouch L3- Center View Select (Hold)- View Standings Start- Pause/UnPasuse D Pad- Choose Phrases (will be covered later) Requirements: -PS2 -Controller -Memory Card -Online Adaptor -Highspeed Internet -At least one Ethernet cable Now When you select Multiplayer, Select Online. If you haven't made a connection setting, do so now. After that, Choose Accept. It will say: "Obtaining IP Address by DHCP..." Then the DNAS screen will appear. If you do not recieve an Error screen, you're good to go. Now choose Player Setup. Make your name whatever you like. Then choose your character. (Characters will be covered in a bit). Now you can either Join an Existing game or Start a Game. Start a Game: Choose "Start a Game". Select the top part. Choose the Game Type. (Game Types will be Covered later). Now choose the Map. (Also covered later). Now you can name the game. Now Score limit is what the game Ends at. Goes from "No Limit" to ??? (I've never got to the highest, I got tired at 406).Choose this wisely. Time Limit is the time in the game. This goes from "No Limit" to 60 Minutes. Now if chose a Team Deathmatch or Capture the flag, you can select what characters represent what team. Then when all of this is dealt with hit Accept. If you "Enter Message". You move with the analog and enter text with X. You backspace with Square. Characters Settings is like Player Setup except you can also choose what team you're on (TeamDeathmatch and Capture the Flag only!). And Finally, Launch gets you started. Join an Existing Game: First you can sort by Game Type. Either All, Just Deathmatch, Just TeamDeathmatch, or Just Capture the Flag. This will display only the Game Types you prefer. Sort By is for arrangement of games shown. None is just the order they appear. Alpha is alphabettical. And Ping is games in Progress. Now Select Game Name. This chooses a game. Then select Join. If you have a specific Ip Adress you want to use, go to Enter IP Adress and enter it. This is for private games. Now once joined, do your Character settings as you like. If the game has started, and you are connected to all players correctly, hit Join Game to start playing now. If the game is yet to begin, and you are connect properly, hit Ready. If an error comes up saying could not connect to players, don't worry. You just can't play in that room, that's all. Once you're started, it's a simple First Person Shooter. This will all be covered shortly. When you die hit R1 to respawn. In-game, you can pause but you're still standing there so remember that. Please note Cheats unlocked CANNOT be used online. Suicides count AGAINST you. Careful because dropped weapons explode after a while. They can kill you, but it won't count against you. There can be 8 players in one game. Your health system works like this. You have a shield bar and health. Shield regenerates on it's own, health doesn't. You must get the health pick-up to get health back. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ |O|n|l|i|n|e| |D|i|f|f|e|r|e|n|c|e|s| +-+-+-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Now there are a few so this section will be kind of short, so bear with me. Major Difference #1: You always start with an AUTOGUN, which isn't very powerful. Major Differnce #2: No KNIFE. So if you run out of ammo, you're screwed! (unless you find some). Major Difference #3: You can say things! Using the D-pad, you open the phrase menu. Mind that the game is still happening. Once the phrase menu is opened. You'll see this: Congratulations Taunts Cheers War Cries Or if in a Team Deathmatch or Capture the Flag Game: Team Orders Taunts Cheers War Cries Use the D-Pad to select one of these Catagories. Now you'll see three Phrases. Select one by using the D-Pad in that Direction. If you want to cancel, Hit the D-pad towards the empty space, then just don't touch it again and after about 2 seconds it should go away. Every Character has different Phrases. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ |C|h|a|r|a|c|t|e|r|s| +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ There a total of 12 characters playable. 1. Tau (Yellow) Advantages: Shorter than most 2. Tau (White) Advantages: Same as Yellow 3. Tau (Yellow and White) Advantages: A little larger than previous, but still small. 4. Tau (Red) Advantages: Also small; Blends well in red areas. 5. Imperial Guard (Yellow) Advantages: Small 6. Imperial Guard (Red) Advantage: Small, blends in well with red areas. 7. Trooper (Purple) Advantages: Small, goes well in dark places. 8. Trooper (Black and White) Advantages: Small, even better in dark places. 9. Chaos (Red) Advantages: Intimidating, blends well in red areas. 10. Ultramarine (Blue) Advantages: Blends well in Blue Areas. 11. Iron Must Space Marine (Yellow) Advantages: None really. 12. Dark Angel Space Marine Advantages: Goes well in dark places. Characters do NOT have special stats. A space marine will deal and take just as much damage as a Tau. It's all equal. It's mostly what fits your style. +-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ |M|o|d|e| |D|e|s|c|r|i|p|t|i|o|n|s| +-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ There are THREE modes of play. 1. Deathmatch. This is basically a free for all. No teams. You see someone, you shoot them. Depending on how may people, this can be crazy, but quite fun. Taunts are useful here. Either the person who gets the Score limit first or the person with the highest Score at the end of the time limit wins. Uses "Deathmatch" Phrases. 2. Team Deathmatch This is the same as Deathmatch, but you have teams. There can only be two. (Red VS Blue). Everyone on one team is the same character to minimize confusion. Also Teammates names are stated above their heads. Uses "Team Deathmatch" Phrases. 3. Capture the Flag This is like Team Deathmatch except with a twist. You have to capture the flag. You get 1 point for killing an enemy and 5 for grabbing a flag. To capture the flag, you must infiltrate the enemy base, grab it, and survive long enough to bring it to your own base. This is worth an additional 10 points. (15 for grabbing and capturing). Also, you cannot get the 10 points if the enemy has your flag, so until the holder on one team dies, no one can get extra points. So kill the other holder, grab your flag to return it, then go to your flag's original spot to get your points. Uses "Team Deathmatch" Phrases. All are fun and depending how many people you have very challenging. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ |W|e|a|p|o|n|s| +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Alright not all weapons are available in Online play: 1. Autogun Primary Fire: Full Auto Secondary: Single Shot Clip: 60 Max Ammo: 360 Overall: Weak Comments: This is for emergency only, you also start with it. 2. Lasgun Primary Fire: Full Auto Secondary: None Clip: 40 Max Ammo: 400 Overall: A little above weak Comments: Better than the Autogun 3. Shotgun Primary Fire: Single Shot Secondary: Double Shot Clip: 8 Max Ammo: 80 Overall: Medium Comments: Powerful but reloads are terrible. 4.Sniper Rifle Primary Fire: Single Shot Secondary: Scope (Hit Primary to Fire) Clip: 10 Max Ammo: 250 Overall: Powerful Comments: Good but bad reloads times; avoid close combat. 5. Pulse Carbine Primary Fire: Full Auto Secondary: Single shot Clip: 32 Max Ammo: 320 Overall: Good Special: Launches grenades quicker and more accurately by hitting Triangle when equiped. Comments: Good for it's grenade feature, decent as a shooter 6. Rail Gun Primary Fire: Single Shot Seconday: Scope (Hit Primary to fire) Clip: 10 Max Ammo: 40 Overall: Deadly Comments: Has bad wait time, but one shot kills. 7. Bolter Primary Fire: Single Shot Secondary: Double Shot Clip: 16 Max Ammo: 120 Overall: Great Comments: has explosive shells, ignores shields. 8. Rocket Launcher Primary Fire: Single Shot Seconday: None Clip: 1 Max Ammo: 8 Overall: Lethal hehehe Comments: Aim for the ground by their feet for a more effective shot. 9. Grenades Primary Fire: Thrown Secondary: None Clip: N/A Max Ammp: 8 Overall: Handy Comments: NOT seperate weapon, thrown with Triangle. Please note that I actually made my own game, and grabbed every weapon so many times to find the max ammo. The Sniper rifle goes up by 10 so I had to grab it 25 times. So I think these values accurate. If you see a mistake, my email is at the bottom. +-+-+-+-+-+-+ |A|r|e|n|a|s| +-+-+-+-+-+-+ There are 12 arenas: Deathmatch: -Divided -Assault -Intervention -Redemption Team Deathmacth: -Prisoners -Oppression -Deception -Ballistic Capture the Flag: -Prisoners II* -Opression II* -Deception II* -Ballistic II* *These are just like the first ones, except slightly modified for Capture the Flag. You check pretty much all these out in a non-online multiplayer game. You can just be by yourself and explore. They do SLIGHTLY vary from the online ones, but not enough to make a significant difference. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ |S|t|r|a|t|e|g|i|e|s| +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Deathmatch Strategies: Scenario 1- A small Deathmatch (2-4 players): Try not to get in the wide open. Snipers and such will just make easy kills off you. Travel around the sides of the arena when possible. Always keep a look-out for Rail shots or Rockets. If they miss, you can use it to spot an opponent. If you find a sniper sneak up on him. Sometimes they don't see you. Don't use an explosive weapon. Even an Autogun can do the job when you sneak up on someone. The Rocket Launcher can be useful, so aim for the ground close to them. I've taken out 4 people in one shot before. I'm not saying this happens often, but good timeing can be your best friend. Scenario 2- Larger Deathmatch (5-8 players): Try to avoid huge masses when possible. Come in from the back of the conflict with a Rocket Launcher or something powerful. You should be able to kill a couple of people before you're taken out, if you get taken out. Avoid use of anything weak such as an Autogun or Lasgun. These aren't as useful. A Pulse Carbine is effective with it's grenade launcher attachment. As last time, use the Rocket Launcher as effective as possable. If you miss, you're screwed due to it's reloading time. Team Deathmatch Strategies: Scenario 1- Even Teams (2 on 2, 3 on 3, 4 on 4) Use team work. Use the pharses button to signal to your partners. Make sure not to attack your partners. They look like you. You may want to have a stationary front of defense. They'll all start at their base you'll start at yours. So you shouldn't worry about them appearing behind. Basically use your team against them. Scenario 2- All Against you (1 on 2-7) Ok this may sound crazy, but you have the advantage. You have a lot more targets than they do. Get a good weapon and find yourself a good spot to hold a front. Watch for them regrouping, as this is where a well placed Rocket can come in handy. Or also, find a good sniping spot can work great in your favor. If you are being Sneaky, DO NOT use the Rail gun. You will kill one person, but also expose you're spot. A sniper rifle does not have a huge visual trail, making it a better sniping weapon. If you play your cards right, you can win it. Sometimes though, the others are just too good. So remember that before you find yourself by yourself. Scenario 3- The opposite of #2. (2-7 on 1) Use your numbers to your advantage. If he is hiding, use team work and communication to find him. If you're lucky you can find all his spots and render his tactics useless. Just don't let him get the better of you. Capture the Flag Strategies: Scenario 1- Even Teams (1 on 1, 2 on 2, 3 on 3, 4 on 4): No side has an advantage. Have your team mate or mates provide you with cover. You can also have them make distractions and such. Lure them away from the flag. Be ready for anything around any corner. Once you have the flag, run for dear life itself. Have team mates support you. If your flag gets captured, do your best to kill the capturer. Scenario 2- All Against you (1 on 2-7): You're pretty much screwed here. You should avoid this at all costs. Basically, they'll shoot you down before you can get the flag. If you do manage to get it, you're still in for it. I suggest using a powerful weapon and just killing as many as possible to get your flag. It will be very hard recovering your flag once it's taken though. Scenario 3- The Opposite of #2 (2-7 on 1): You got this in the bag. Have 1 or two people guard the flag. Then have 1 or two people to go for the other flag. Then have everyone else hunt down the guy. It's very simple and should be a pushover. But still be ready for anything. +-+-+ +-+-+-+-+ +-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ |I|n| |C|a|s|e| |o|f| |C|h|e|a|t|e|r| +-+-+ +-+-+-+-+ +-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ This section is to help you deal with Online cheaters. Unfortuneatly in Online games these days, people use cheats and such to win. This is usually down by a cheating device or exploiting glitches in the game. This game does not have such a bad cheating problem as others (SOCOM II: US Navy Seals has a huge problem with this). I have seen few cheaters in this game. Most of the time though, the people just have some skill. There are a few glitches people exploit. I have never seen anyone use godly like powers or anything but I have seen a few glitch exploiters. The only thing is that people find ways to climb to areas you normally can't access. Once spotted though, they're screwed because they have no where to go. If you see this, simple shoot at them. If you cannot hit them, you should Either avoid them, or just leave the game itself. Don't worry, there aren't too many of them, but if one should come, just do what you have to to still have fun while online. Also Note that sometimes people appear to cheat, but are not. This is caused by lag in the server. Even if you see a shot hit someone, that always mean that they really got hit. Sometimes lag causes people to appear there at Point A but they really are at Point B, 10 feet away. Also Note that the height of characters doesn't change the hit zone for that character. +-+-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ |L|e|g|a|l| |I|n|f|o|r|m|a|t|i|o|n| +-+-+-+-+-+ +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ I, samthebigkid, own all rights to this guide. Updated: 8-6-04 Updates: I fixed a Mistake in the "Phrases" Section and added a few other things. I also added the cool ASCII picture. Arcian Darkrobe and kwazy gave me some info to add. "I think you should note the bad clipping and modelling of the characters. How shots seem to pass through doing now damage on certain models in specific areas. Also note about frame rates being the key here. The more you get the better, and that the stuff players see is ALWAYS client side. Just because you saw the shot hit the player, if there is a lag issue, the enemy may not have been there if they were mobile." -Arcian Darkrobe " never really experience much in the way of lag problems. One comment: the practical height of the players seems to be split between the Tau and the human characters. In other words, you can shoot directly over a Tau character's head and still hit them while you can shoot at the top of a Space Marine and miss. Important when lining up head shots. I don't know the name of him, but the little dark dude is the hardest to play against in almost any map."-kwazy samthebigkid 2004
