Numerous reasons for this belief exist: - Adelheid closely resembles Rugal in appearance, but is smaller and obviously younger. - Adelheid's techniques bear a great similarity to Rugal's. - Their base is called the Sky Noah, and Rugal has used a base called the Black Noah in previous KOFs. - Prior to the fight with Adelheid, Rugal's face appears on the screen. To fight Adelheid, you must defeat Kusanagi with anything other than a DM/LDM; this will result in your team appearing on the Sky Noah and the fight with Adelheid will commence. The other ending (the 'good ending') takes place if you defeat Kusanagi with a DM/LDM and go on to fight and defeat Maki/Chizuru Kagura and Mukai. ======================================================================= 2) SNK Official Profile and Comments NAME: Adelheid (note his surname is NOT officially Bernstein) MODE OF COMBAT: A comprehensive combat technique that masters all combat arts BIRTHDAY: February 15 HEIGHT: 183cm WEIGHT: 74kg BLOOD TYPE: Type O MEASUREMENTS: Unknown BIRTHPLACE: ? HOBBY: ? PERSONAL TREASURES: ? FAVORITE FOOD: ? DISLIKES: ? FORTE IN SPORTS: ? (This profile as presented on the KOF 10th Anniversary website- www.kof10th.com) Adelheid's designer also gives a description: 'To widen the worldview of KOF with the desire to add a separate story to the main tale, we added this character devised as a set with her kid sister Rose. We think many picked up on this, but Adelheid is a common female name among Swiss and Germans, and is the name from which the diminutive of Heidi's derives. In the Adelheid stage of KOF 2003, the soundtrack begins with Chopin's "Revolutionary Etude," but including something like this on the NEOGEO system required a huge amount of memory which overwhelmed the voice data of other characters. We believe it was worth it, but we may have dissed the supervising designers of other characters in the process. By the way, the father of Adelheid is unknown, isn't he? (Laugh)' This seems to suggest that Adelheid is either a girl masquerading as a man (a la King) or was intended to be a girl but was changed to a man in the later development stages. The latter seems more likely since Adelheid's character sprite appears masculine. Also, the insinuation that Rugal is Adelheid and Rose's father is supported by the last line (at least in my mind) rather than Adelheid being (yet ANOTHER) clone, this time, of course, of Rugal. ======================================================================= 3) Adelheid in-game pre/post fight speech This section warrants a thanks to the members of the Orochinagi forums (www.orochinagi.com) for correcting and confirming my translations. The Japanese as spoken in game is followed by an English translation directly beneath. Bear in mind I am not a native Japanese speaker ^_^' PRE-FIGHT ROSE: Rozu tame ni Ganbatte ne, Onii-sama! ADEL: Makasete OK ROSE: For Rose's sake... Do your best, brother! ADEL: Trust me, OK... Vs. Kyo ADEL: Kono otoko ga Kusanagi ka? ADEL: This man is Kusanagi? Vs. Ash/Shen/K'/Iori ADEL: Kateru daro ka...ore ga ADEL: I guess...I'll be the winner AFTER-FIGHT ROSE: Sasuga wa, Oniisama ne? ADEL: Hmm. Touzen no kekka da. ROSE: It's as we expected brother, isn't it? ADEL: Hmm. It's the expected result. ROSE: Onii-sama...sugoi ADEL: Hmm. Touzen no kekka da. ROSE: Brother...amazing! ADEL: Hmm. It's the expected result. ======================================================================= 4) Win quotes It is alleged that Rose actually speaks these for Adelheid...(she seems to want to control him too much o_O) They do all seem to match her personality more than Adelheid's... - "Winning is everything. How you do it doesn't matter! - "... Pathetic." - "You fought well. Hoo, hoo, hoo..." - "I hear you, brother! A symphony for victors!" Special Win Quotes: Ryo- "You see ahead without doubt, but miss what's around you." Gato- "You've exceeded your father. But does it matter?" Iori- "You must be joking? Are you really so powerful?" Kim- "Justice? It's but a cloke [sic] in which violence hides." ======================================================================= 5) 'Bad Ending' text ROSE: ... My Brother... You lost! It cannot be!" ROSE: ... I will not release you! ROSE: You will not go back alive! ADEL: Stop! Rose! Return them to the earth ADEL: ... And land SKY-NOAH. ROSE: Brother, you're mistaken! Again! ROSE: You must fight again! ADEL: Rose, defeat is defeat. ADEL: To fight over and over until victory is meaningless.. The defeat of believers... That presages a new tale. The prelude has begun...... And then again... It appears that the Bernstein kids don't explode their base like their old man used to...Adelheid seems to be a decent kind of guy. ======================================================================= 6) Move list explanation BUTTONS A = weak punch B = weak kick C = hard punch D = hard kick AB = evasive move (forward/backward) AB (during block) = Guard Cancel (ceases block and evades- needs 1 bar) AB (knockdown) = Recovery Roll (return to stand animation) BC = Tag qcf +BC = Attack then Tag (needs 1 bar) CD = Tag CD (during block) = Guard Cancel (same as AB, but also does CD attack) qcf +CD = Attack then Tag (needs 1 bar) DIRECTION CONTROL f = forward f,f = dash forward f+ B/D = throw b = back b,b = jump back b+ B/D = throw d = down d,u = High Jump u = up df = down forward db = down back qcf = quarter circle forward qcb = quarter circle back hcf = half circle forward hcb = half circle back DM = Desperation Move LDM = Leader Desperation Move ======================================================================= 7) Basic moves hold f= Adel moves forwards using small hops hold b= the same, but backwards (away from the opponent) f,f= Adel clears about 2/5 of the screen b,b= Adel makes a large leap away from the opponent Stand A= Adel swings his arm in a short-range chop Crouch A= Average range backhand fist Jump A= Adel performs a weak palm strike in the air. Easily interrupted Stand B= Adel does a swift kick to the opponent's upper body/head Stand B (close) the same, but hits twice Crouch B= weak shin kick, fails to trip but OK for jabbing purposes Jump B= flying kick, not powerful but reasonable Stand C= Adel spins, moves forward and kicks at the opponent's stomach Stand C (close)= Adel does a right handed 2-hit strike to the opponent Crouch C= Adel kicks straight up at the opponent's head Jump C= similar to Jump A; more powerful but still poor range Stand D= similar motion to C but the kick is aimed at the head Stand D (close)= Adel kicks at the opponent's head Crouch D= same as Crouch B but always trips, reasonable range Jump D= same as Jump B but stronger, better range, aimed towards head AB= standard evade like any other character Start= taunt; beckons to the opponent, short duration Throw (C)= Adel grabs the opponent and punches them behind him Throw (D)= same as above, but punches the opponent away in front Tag= exact same motion as taunt, Adel is then replaced Tag Attack= Blue energy effect, then Adel punches at the opponent ======================================================================= 8) Command and Special moves f/b +C/D= Drucken (Scorpion Deathlock) See throw descriptions df +A= G. Wand (Dark Barrier) This produces a shield around Adel's hand which knocks the opponent down if they touch it. Faster than Rugal's and greyish in colour df +B= A. Kunst Zwei (Double Tomahawk) Adel does a low kick to axe kick move; the second hit is overhead df +C= A. Kunst Eins (Futtobashi) Identical to Crouch C but Adel moves forwards a short distance. Great for intercepting approaching jumping opponents df +D= A. Kunst Vier (Beads Destruction) Adel performs three kicks at different levels for 4 hits. His best basic combo in my opinion; last hit smacks opponent to floor. qcf +B/D= G. Kicken (Reppukyaku) Adel does a high kick which sends a cutting gust along the floor. Really fast and can be included in comboing. cancel into qcf +B/D= G. Springen qcb +A/C= G. Drucken (God Press) Adel slides forwards and smashes the opponent against the wall. ======================================================================= 9) Desperation moves f,d,df +B/D= G. Kreis (Genocide Cutter) (DM) Same as Rugal's infamous destructive move, but faster and with less flailing of the legs. The B version is more powerful but I hear the D version is more suitable for comboing. The D version starts with Adel sliding towards the opponent in his Crouch D position, then following up with the crescent kick. qcf +A/C= G. Sklaven (Gigantic Pressure) (LDM) Again like Rugal's move, but faster. Does impressive damage and can be used in comboing. ======================================================================= 10) Playing as Adelheid I played as Adelheid after downloading a Kawaks bundle including KOF 2003 with all the cheats set up, allowing to play as any of the bosses. Needless to say the team of Adel, Maki and Mukai is fun to play as, but only against the CPU- I sense that a human opponent would lose patience VERY quickly ^_^' I am unaware of whether or not there is any way to play as Adelheid using dipswitches or other 'official' methods, but in terms of using the MAME emulation system there are ways. To find this information please read Kao Megura's KOF 2003 Move List FAQ and Lord Karasuman's Adelheid FAQ. ======================================================================= 11) Move Name Explanation The moves Adelheid uses are based on those of his father Rugal. This led fans to call his moves by the same name. However SNK has given different official names for these moves. To make this clear, I put the official names first with the commonly used names in parentheses after. Also, the G. in Adel's moves, while widely considered to stand for 'God' like in Rugal's moves, actually stands for 'Grosse' according to SNK's KOF 10th anniversary webpage. Here are the direct translations of Adelheid's moves as presented by Kao Megura in his KOF 2003 FAQ. Drucken Press G. Wand Grosse Wall A. Kunst Zwei Adelheid Art Two A. Kunst Eins Adelheid Art One A. Kunst Vier Adelheid Art Four G. Kicken Grosse Kicking G. Springen Grosse Leaping G. Drucken Grosse Press G. Kreis Grosse Circle G. Sklaven Grosse Slaves ======================================================================= 12) Acknowledgements I would like to thank the Orochinagi.com forum members (particularly [BR-2]???, Jay, MIragemirage, [Shadow Sonic]Harima Kenji, Fuu, [Ichigo 100%]Nishino Tsukasa and Denieru) for their assistance with translating the intros and winposes.
