Further information in the credits section at the end of this document. ============================================================================== Introduction: I've written this guide mainly to assist myself in customizing the game's Inventory. This said, I decided to share it with others so many can profit from the work I've done. The lists contained may be useful even to those not planning on using a Patch Device to alter their Inventory manually. I included a list of all [ma]Materials and how they affect weapons and armor when used as a tempering Material. As well as a detailed [id]Item Digits List, which in future revisions will contain all item stats. Currently there are a few item stats missing. Refer to the [Ab]Abbreviations section to see which info is included. (if you're planning to not patch anything I advise you to jump directly to the parts of the guide referenced above using Ctrl+F) This guide assumes that you've played Romancing SaGa and are familiar with its terminology. It also assumes you know how to use your Patching Device of choice, Codebreaker, Gameshark, Action Replay, etc. I presume you know how to use Patch Codes in RAW format, as this is the only format making sense when dealing with this game. All Codes in this guide are RAW, meaning unencrypted. I will try and keep it as user friendly as possible, though. ============================================================================== Revision History: Alpha Version (02/11/2005-09/11/2005) -written everything apart from herb and treasure map in-depth digits. -To-Do still includes a in-depth look into equipment defense mods. Probably worth a look, as I also included Item type, as well as everything apart from the main stats. If the item adds casting support for a type of magic, resistance against another, uses LP's, or adds stat bonuses, the bonus is listed. ============================================================================== [ma]Materials ============================================================================== includes applicable modifiers when combined with weapons and armor, eg, it tells you how much stronger and weaker the result will be. ============================================================================== [se]Short Inventory Slot Code Introduction [mc]Mastercodes [mi]Main Inventory Slot Codes ============================================================================== The Patch Codes for slot 1 to 99 are in this section ============================================================================== [cm]Individual Character Equipment Modifier Codes ============================================================================== Not yet included, will need to be verified. ============================================================================== Appendix: [cr]Credits ============================================================================== [Bc]Basics & Introduction to Romancing Saga's Item System ============================================================================== The following is meant for people not familiar with customizing Patch Codes. If you never changed the hexadecimal digits at the end of some Patch Code before, you're probably better off to read this portion. ============================================================================== Romancing SaGa has a rather bulky item system, as it can use up to 24 bytes to describe an item. Normally most games only use 2 or 4. 1-2 bytes to determine the amount of items carried and another 1-2 bytes to determine the item. It is more complicated in this game. In the worst case you will need 6 lines of 32 bit code to create 1 Item. That still makes about 16 items you can create in the worst case, as most Patch Devices I used only allow for 100 lines of code to be patched. Luckily you will not need all these codes for every TYPE of item. If you just want materials, simple Items and not customized Weapons/Armor, Event Items and so forth you can omit some lines. Though in general I advise against omitting lines, as this may lead to strange artifacts or in general unwanted effects. After some experimentation you will know how and where to omit lines. But in the beginning you should make use of all 6 codes in order to create exactly the item you wanted. Refer to the [Ex]Examples section below for further information regarding this matter. All the Patch Codes in this Guide are RAW codes, which means you'll be able to use them on pretty much any Patch Device. You may need different Mastercodes, or even a tool to convert the codes to different formats (eg ARMax). But for editing purposes working in Raw mode is indispensable. ============================================================================== [Ex]Examples ============================================================================== The ASCII chart below contains the Patch Code for the item in slot 1, it consists of 6 codes which define it. The first part of the code is the Address, the second part the value written to it. The address is the location in the PS2's RAM where all the values are stored. Luckily for us, it seems the Inventory has a static Area assigned to it. Thus it'll always start at 20421FD0. Each Value has 4 Bytes it consists of. They're ordered as shown in the ASCII chart below. So all that is left for you to do is edit the Bytes according to the lists contained herein. It is not always necessary to include all codes to get the item desired. Usually only Code 1 which contains the Item ID is really needed, though if you want ores, shards (better ores basically), useable weapons, you also need at least code 2 & 5 to get anything else but the generic "Ore" "Shard" or a mostly unusable weapon. Eg, if you want to create a Meteoric Iron, Set the Item ID Byte(which is Byte #1) to 11 and the Material Byte(which is Byte #5) to 22. You also need to set Byte#17 to 8. Byte#1 is in code 1, Byte#2 in code 2 and Byte#17 in code 5. Recap: To add ore into your Inventory, you need Code 1,2&5. For weapons at least Code1&5. For almost everything else just Code1. If you want to get an item which has Durability Points, you probably want to use Code 3 and set it to something like "1E" (which equals 30 durability points) or if you want a comfy DP Total Bonus, something like "63" (equals 99). Not needed for LP using Weapons. Weapons also need to have a mode (attack, defense, trick, or a mix of the previous) set. You can do that at any Blacksmith, for a fee. Or you can use code 5 to set Byte#17 to any mode you want. Until you do this, the weapons will remain unusable, unless they also channel magic in which case they will do just that until the Byte is set. Many of the better weapons can not be customized inside the game. But if you use the Patch Codes you can go beyond these limitations. Set the weapon power mod with Byte#22. There is another FAQ on Gamefaqs detailing how to increase weapon power through normal means. If you just want to shorten the time needed to strengthen a weapon to the next level, then you can do so by editing Byte#21 which is responsible for counting how often the weapon was used with a Harmonious Ore. >(further information on how to edit a weapons dp mods and att power and so forth will follow, i just forgot to document them properly >_<) ============================================================================== [As]ASCII CHART#1 ============================================================================== slot 01 Byte Address / | | \ | 4 3 2 1 | 20421FD0 00 00 00 11 | Code 1 -------------------- 8 7 6 5 | 20421FD4 00 00 00 22 | Code 2 -------------------- 12 11 10 9 | 20421FD8 00 00 00 00 | Code 3 -------------------- 16 15 14 13 | 20421FDC 00 00 00 00 | Code 4 -------------------- 20 19 18 17 | 20421FE0 00 00 00 08 | Code 5 -------------------- 24 23 22 21 | 20421FE4 00 00 00 00 | Code 6 -------------------- ============================================================================== [me]Material Example ============================================================================== ## (Item ID) Ore Name (Power / Durability mod / Durability Total) (Physical Defense / Magical Defense / Weight) 0B (10)Garal (P --% /DPM+2 /DP -33%) (PD+30% /MD+10% /W+40%) 0B Is the Material Mod, aka Byte#5, look at the ASCII CHART#1. While in general this precaution is not needed, you should stick to it until you get the hang of it. Advice #2: If you patch in some items into your game. make sure you select the proper slot (filled the first 70 slots, add the following ones to slot 71+). After loading your game, verify your Inventory. Then save (preferably to a new slot, if you didn't follow advice #1). Disable the Patch Codes by pressing the reset/power button on your ps2 and reloading the game. Advice #3: If you Start a New Game: Patch items into the first slots of your Inventory, the patched items won't delete the ones you are given at game start. >(if you noticed items vanishing because of following the advice above, please notify me so i can edit it.) In General: Prepare your Inventory with useless items on top (slot 1& following). That way you will have less trouble as opposed to adding items to the first empty slot you have. If you replace items you will need all 6 codes to make sure the new item is created properly. In any case, disable the Patch Codes as soon as possible, as you will mess up your Inventory if you use the "Sort Inventory" Options inside the Game with Patch Codes enabled. Advice #4: An event item placed into your Inventory by a Patch Code does unlock whatever it is supposed to unlock, if you're stuck, or just want a shortcut, you can use the codes in this FAQ instead. Advice #5: You may not want to type in all these codes manually. Good news, you do not have to! All you need is a way to edit your cheat savefile. There are many different possibilities depending on which cheat device you use. Also mandatory is some kind of save transfer. There are many methods you can employ, eg commercial ones from datel, xlink and so forth, or codebreakers savefile transfer capability (available from version 7.1 upwards, I think). For all codebreakers up to version 6 and gamesharks from version 3 upwards you can use XP2CC. http://www.fh-merseburg.de/~mlafeldt/ps2/xp2cc/ This is a small program which creates a savegame which is compatible to aforementioned devices. Unfortunately the savegame is created in a format which may not be compatible with the type of save transfer device you use, so you'll most likely also need ps2save-builder. http://www.ps2savetools.com/download.php?op=viewdownloaddetails&lid=74 With it you can convert the .p2m file into whatever format your transfer device uses. If you own a Network Adaptor, you can also use nport to transfer saves. Needs pukklink/ps2link/xlink on your pc as well as a properly set up Network. Take a look at ps2savetools in general if you want more information on how to transfer savegames between your computer and ps2. ============================================================================== ============================================================================== [iC]Item Code Bytes Breakdown ============================================================================== [sL]Short List: ============================================================================== Byte 1&2 (Item ID) Defines the Item Byte 3&4 Byte 5 Material Mod Byte 6-8 Byte 9 the current durability points Byte 10-12 Byte 13 either strength or durability modifier through customizing, also found in herbs also changes treasure map locations Byte 14-16 Byte 17 the mode of the weapon (attack/trick/defense or mixed) Byte 18-20 Byte 21 Weapon usage (if the weapon has a Harmonious ore) Treasure map Search Level needed mod Byte 22 the weapon strength modifier (the +1 after a weapons name) Byte 23-24 ============================================================================== [ie]In-Depth Explanation: ============================================================================== Byte 1&2 (Item ID) ============================================================================== You will need this for each and every item, there are a few items which need just hese two bytes to be set to be created. Mostly armor and accessories. ============================================================================== Byte 5 Material Mod ============================================================================== Many items also need this, it is crucial for ores and shards, Also for herbs and such. As this Byte makes the generic ore/shard/herb into whatever specific ore/shard/herb you want. Weapons and Armor rely on this Byte to tell whether they are tempered with Garal, Vernie or any other material. There are also some items which need this Byte set to a specific value (0B usually) to be created. Maybe also used to determine the search Level needed for treasure maps. ============================================================================== Byte 9 Durability Points ============================================================================== The durability points an Item currently has. Also needed for Ores and shards and possibly other items. If not a weapon it is usually set to 1. >(will be fleshed out in next update) ============================================================================== Byte 13 Strength/Durability/Treasure Map mod ============================================================================== either strength or durability modifier through customizing, also found in herbs also changes treasure map locations Treasure maps mod 08 Bayre Plateau 0B Mt. If you do not use this Byte when creating a weapon or items specifically needing this byte, the resulting item will not work, be unusable or just not appear in your inventory at all. Use this List to determine which Mode you want: 00 Armor/Shield 01 Attack 02 Defense 03 Trick 04 A + D 05 D + T 06 A + T 07 A + D + T 08 Special Flag (set for certain items, like treasure maps, ores and one-of-a-kind equipment) ============================================================================== Byte 21 Weapon Usage ============================================================================== Weapon usage, if the weapon has a Harmonious ore. ============================================================================== [cr]Credits: ============================================================================== Skiller and the Codemaster Project Forum. Without his work, I probably wouldn't have tried tackling this project. And without the help and information on the Forum, much of which has been contributed by him too, I wouldn't have had the tools needed for this task. The Mastercodes were made by him. All the Material Mods and Codes have been found and verified in the game. Apart from skillers initial work I have not copied or even looked at any lists similar to the ones contained in this guide about this game. To be explicit, I haven't had the luxury of referring to either the Brady Games Romancing SaGa Guide nor the Japanese UltimaniA one. Which means that all the info contained in this guide has been collected by me. Please respect my work and do not re-publish it commercially, be it on websites financed eg through advertising revenue or subscription nor in gaming magazines without my written consent. If you're running a non-commercial Fan Site you're free to host this guide, but please notify me if you do so nonetheless. You're also free to include the information contained herein in your guide, provided you credit this one. Thank you
