Even I started with the "easy" settings, although I have (or have played) all Ridge Racer games except the one for Nintendo 64. My first game to PlayStation was also Ridge Racer 1... 1.1 History / Previous Games Everything started in 1993 when Namco unleashed the arcade game called Ridge Racer. There was no doubt about wich console this little wonder was going to be used on. Ridge Racer was (when it was released) the most realistic racing game ever made. This is what it says on the back of the box: "...Incredible realism..." You just laugh at that nowadays. Fortunaly, Namco didn't remove the totaly unrealistic steering, because the control of the cars have been total in EVERY RR game. There was only four cars and four tracks available at the start, but as you proceeded through the game you got the hold of your opponent's cars and the mighty 13th Racing special car. The courses could also be played reversed. The first games that came out on PlayStation was, among others, RR, Tekken and Wipeout. PlayStation, and with it RR, came out some time in 1994 in Japan, and 1995 here in Europe. I don't know exactly, but about '96 the sequel to RR, Ridge Racer Revolution was released. It wasn't really a sequel, just a updated version of the first RR game. It was only some new tracks and one new car; the Angel Car. In about '97 the real sequel came, Rage Racer. A very long-lasting game in wich we saw the first sympthoms of the "Gran Turismo Syndrome" (when you won a race you got a amount of money for wich you could upgrade your car, or buy a completley new one). In this game you could also repaint your car. There was many cars in many variations, but the game felt quite... 16-bit. Much of this depended on the lame behind-the-car-view and the dark colours... It was fun all the time it lasted, but after you cleared the whole game, it was not fun at all. In 1999 R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 came. It had 321 cars, and it was more a racing/RPG than a regular racing game. R4 was also a very long-lasting game, but the first levels was too darn easy. The graphics was quite pretty, but the cars were not that "shiny", except for in the replays. 1.2 Controls Note! This is the standard settings. You can change them in the Options menu. *= One of the new features of the Dualshock2 is the analog buttons (the harder you push the buttons, the more you steer, accelerate, etcetra), and RRV uses this feature on acceleration, braking and steering in Analog mode. Digital Controls: Direction buttons: Steer left/right. X-button: Accelerate. Square button: Brake. Triangle button: Change view. There are two views to choose from; Behind the car, or inside the car. Circle button: Nothing. R1 button: Shifft up (Manual transmission only!). L1 button: Shift down (Manual transmission only!). R2 button: Rearview. L2 button: Rearview. Start button: Pause Menu. Here you can choose from: Cancel, Sound, Restart (only in some game modes) and Exit. Select button: Nothing. Analog Controls: Direction buttons: Steer left/right.* X-button: Accelerate.* Square button: Brake.* Triangle button: Change view. Circle button: Nothing. R1 button: Shift up. L1 button: Shift down. R2 button: Rearview. L2 button: Rearview. R3 stick Nothing. L3 stick Steer left/right. Start button: Pause menu. Select button: Press and hold down Select in the Analog mode to get a diagram wich shows how much you are accelerating, braking and steering. ********** *2.0 Cars* ********** There are six standard cars plus one upgraded version of each car. If you beat the time trial records in Extra Time Attack, you'll get the Duel mode, in wich you can race against two "classic" RR cars (13th Racing and Angel Car),and two new cars. When you've raced 3.000 kilometers you'll get the Pac- Man car and a new Pac-Man race. If you win that race, you'll get four ghosts racing on scooters; Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde. 2.1 Standard Cars These cars are not tuned in any way, they come directly from the manufacturer. When you've cleared the Standard GP with a car, just start a new Standard GP to get a new car. Drift Cars: Kamata Fiaro The classic car from RR1, RRR & R4. In RR1 it was the F/A Racing's and RT Ryukyu's cars, in R4 it was called Terrazi Ambitious (but then it was a grip-car). It's got the greatest handling of the standard drift cars. Model: Fiaro Manufacturer: Kamata Engine: KA-30FR Engine manufacturer: Kamata Cylinders: Inline 6 DOHC Length: 4520 mm Width: 1840 mm Height: 1210 mm Weight: 1050 kg Displacement: 3000 cc Max rpm: 7200 rpm Max bhp: 351 bhp @ 6400 rpm Torque: 31.7 kg/m @ 4100 rpm Top speed: 276 km/h Gears: 5 Power layout: FR Danver Toreador An American car in every way... It got soft suspension, only four gears and it's got extreamly much horses under the hood. This car is one of the hardest handling cars EVER in a RR game! By the way... It's the heaviest car in the game. Model: Toreador Manufacturer: Danver Engine: 60-GE Engine manufacturer: Danver Cylinders: V8 SOHC Length: 4650 mm Width: 1890 mm Height: 1250 mm Weight: 1320 kg Displacement: 3000 cc Max rpm: 7000 rpm Max bhp: 383 bhp @ 5350 rpm Torque: 47.0 kg/m @ 3700 rpm Top speed: 298 km/h Gears: 4 Power layout: FR Rivelta Solare A car with hard steering but good acceleration and great topspeed. Although the steering is tough, it's not harder than the Danver Toreador, depending on that this car has harder suspension. Model: Solare Manufacturer: Rivelta Engine: R4CT Engine manufacturer: Rivelta Cylinders: Flat 12 DOHC Length: 4450 mm Width: 2100 mm Height: 1170 mm Weight: 1120 kg Displacement: 4500 cc Max rpm: 8000 rpm Max bhp: 435 bhp @ 7800 rpm Torque: 34.5 kg/m @ 6200 rpm Top speed: 321 km/h Gears: 6 Power layout: MR Grip Cars: Kamata Fortune A front wheel drive car wich is the lightest car in the game. It's got very good handling but the acceleration and topspeed is the... ehm... worst in the game. It looks like a Honda EG Civic. Model: Fortune Manufacturer: Kamata Engine: KA-18FT Engine manufacturer: Kamata Cylinders: Inline 4 DOHC Length: 3910 mm Width: 1750 mm Height: 1255 mm Weight: 880 kg Displacement: 1800 cc Max rpm: 9000 rpm Max bhp: 281 bhp @ 8000 rpm Torque: 20.7 kg/m @ 7500 rpm Top speed: 240 km/h Gears: 5 Power layout: FF Rivelta Mercurio A very cool looking car. This all wheel driven car has average handling, it's very fast, and the acceleration is quite good too... It's just an average car... It looks like a Ferarri 360 Modena. Model: Mercurio Manufacturer: Rivelta Engine: R16C Engine manufacturer: Rivelta Cylinders: V6 DOHC Length: 4450 mm Width: 1920 mm Height: 1170 mm Weight: 1060 kg Displacement: 3000 cc Max rpm: 8200 rpm Max bhp: 405 bhp @ 5500 rpm Torque: 46.8 kg/m @ 4000 rpm Top speed: 281 km/h Gears: 6 Power layout: 4WD Himmel E.O. Oh! This is a hard handling car! The engine is placed in the back of the car and it's also rear wheel driven wich makes it quite hard to handel. This is the fastest standard car. Model: E.O. Manufacturer: Himmel Engine: HM36DRST Engine manufacturer: Himmel Cylinders: Flat 6 SOHC, aircooled Length: 4580 mm Width: 1980 mm Height: 1220 mm Weight: 940 kg Displacement: 3600 cc Max rpm: 8100 rpm Max bhp: 479 bhp @ 6200 rpm Torque: 40.7 kg/m @ 4500 rpm Top speed: 335 km/h Gears: 5 Power layout: RR 2.2 Extra Cars The Extra Cars are aquierd by first winning the Standard GP with the car, and then by winning one of the Extra GP's. To get the "Oval" engine, just win the last GP. Drift Cars: Kamata Fiaro Specifications others than the standard car: Extra engine: KA-3FRF Engine manufacturer: Kamata Cylinders: Inline 6 DOHC Displacement: 3000 cc Max rpm: 7500 rpm Top speed: 286 km/h Oval engine: J52FT Engine manufacturer: Jeger Cylinders: Inline 6 DOHC, turbo Displacement: 5200 cc Max rpm: 9000 rpm Top speed: 420 km/h Length: 4540 mm Width: 1880 mm Height: 1190 Gears: 5 Danver Toreador Specifications others than the standard car: Extra engine: J40TT Engine manufacturer: Jeger Cylinders: V8 DOHC, twin turbo Displacement: 4000 cc Max rpm: 7050 rpm Top speed: 339 km/h Oval engine: J62TT Engine manufacturer: Jeger Cylinders: V8 DOHC, twin turbo Displacement: 6200 cc Max rpm: 9000 rpm Top speed: 424 km/h Length: 4650 mm Width: 1920 mm Height: 1210 mm Gears: 4 Rivelta Solare Specifications others than the standard car: Extra engine: VCT33 Engine manufacturer: VECT Cylinders: Flat 12 DOHC Displacement: 5700 cc Max rpm: 8900 rpm Top speed: 382 km/h Oval engine: VCT36 Engine manufacturer: VECT Cylinders: Flat 12 DOHC Displacement: 8000 cc Max rpm: 9900 rpm Top speed: 431 km/h Length: 4450 mm Width: 2100 mm Height: 1140 mm Gears: 6 Grip cars: Kamata Fortune Specifications others than the standard car: Extra engine: J20F Engine manufacturer: Jeger Cylinders: V6 DOHC Displacement: 2000 cc Max rpm: 10000 rpm Top speed: 291 km/h Oval engine: KA-43TFT Engine manufacturer: Kamata Cylinders: L4 DOHC, twin turbo Displacement: 4300 cc Max rpm: 10000 rpm Top speed: 397 km/h Length: 3910 mm Width: 1850 mm Height: 1230 mm Gears: 6 Rivelta Mercurio Specifications others than the standard car: Extra engine: VCT18 Engine manufacturer: VECT Cylinders: V6 DOHC, twin turbo Displacement: 3000 cc Max rpm: 8150 rpm Top speed: 342 km/h Oval engine: VCT24 Engine manufacturer: VECT Cylinders: V6 DOHC, twin turbo Displacement: 5200 cc Max rpm: 8650 rpm Top speed: 436 km/h Length: 4450 mm Width: 1950 mm Height: 1140 mm Gears: 6 Himmel E.O. Then you'll get the Duel mode. Depending on wich record you've beaten, you get different cars. So just win the duel modes! Drift Cars: Danver Spectra This is a very cool car, but its handling is poor. The topspeed is pretty good and the acceleration is just fabulous, it got the best acceleration in the game. Engine: 16D-GZTE Engine manufacturer: Danver Cylinders: V8 SOHC, supercharger Displacement: 10000 cc Gears: 6 Power layout: FR Length: 5720 mm Width: 2150 mm Height: 1140 mm Max rpm: 13000 rpm Top speed: 400 km/h Rivelta Crinale Yes! It's the classic car from RR1. And it looks the same! Well, it is much better graphics, though. Unfortuneatly the handling is NOT as good as in the first game. In RR1 it was called 13th Racing. Engine: R765DV Engine manufacturer: Rivelta Cylinders: V12 DOHC4, quad turbo Displacement: 6000 cc Gears: 7 Power layout: MR Length: 4900 mm Width: 2180 mm Height: 1120 mm Max rpm: 12000 rpm Top speed: 475 km/h Pac-Man This is a very... strange car. It has very soft suspension, bad handling and the acceleration is not so good either. But it is a fun car that you get after completing 3000 km. Engine: PWD1980 Engine manufacturer: Pac-Man Cylinders: 0 Displacement: 0 cc Gears: 4 Power layout: Unknown Length: 2020 mm Width: 1000 mm Height: 1120 mm Max rpm: 0 rpm Top speed: 296 km/h Inky Eh... after driving 3000 km, this game gets pretty unserious... If you win the Pac-Man race with the Pac-Man car you get four ghosts racing on scooters. I haven't cared that much about driving these things so i don't have that much to say about it. Engine: PM-CHR2 Engine manufacturer: Pac-Man Cylinders: 0 Displacement: 0 cc Gears: 5 Power layout: Unknown Length: 1990 mm Width: 1180 mm Height: 1180 mm Max rpm: 0 rpm Top speed: 376 km/h Clyde Clyde is toughest to drive among the scooters. It's got just about the same performance as the other scooters. Engine: PM-CHR4 Engine manufacturer: Pac-Man Cylinders: 0 Displacement: 0 cc Gears: 3 Power layout: Unknown Length: 1990 mm Width: 1180 mm Height: 1180 mm Max rpm: 0 rpm Top speed: 309 km/h Grip Cars: Soldat Rumeur This is a cool car. It's the slowest Duel car (except for the Pac-Man cars) but it's handling is the best in the whole game. It also sounds quite fun, it sounds like a bus! You can also see the engine when driving! Engine: GC118SLM Engine manufacturer: Soldat Cylinders: V6 DOHC Displacement: 3600 cc Gears: 5 Power layout: RR Length: 3500 mm Width: 1640 mm Height: 1250 mm Max rpm: 7600 rpm Top speed: 374 km/h Kamata Angelus This is the Best car in the game. This one is also a classic RR car. It was the special car in RRR. The only thing that I can complain about is the handling. It has very good handlig, but sometimes its back just loses its grip, wich makes it slam into a wall or something. Oh, and one more thing... THIS CAR IS FAST!!! Engine: KA-CLMX Engine manufacturer: Kamata Cylinders: Craymel W18 DOHC Displacement: 6400 cc Gears: 7 Power layout: MR Length: 4440 mm Width: 2100 mm Height: 1070 mm Max rpm: 12550 rpm Top speed: 591 km/h Blinky It drives about the same as the other scooters, but this is a grip "car". It has somewhat better handling than the other scooters. Engine: PM-CHR1 Engine manufacturer: Pac-Man Cylinders: 0 Displacement: 0 cc Gears: 4 Power layout: Unknown Length: 1990 mm Width: 1180 mm Height: 1180 mm Max rpm: 0 rpm Top speed: 314 km/h Pinky It has the best brakes in the game. Otherwise... It's another scooter. End. Engine: PM-CHR3 Engine manufacturer: Pac-Man Cylinders: 0 Displacement: 0 cc Gears: 1 Power layout: Unknown Length: 1990 mm Width: 1180 mm Height: 1180 mm Max rpm: 0 rpm Top speed: 319 km/h ************ *3.0 Tracks* ************ The tracks are based on the standard track in RR1, so everyone that has played RR1 will recognize themselves. You can also drive all tracks reversed, if you win all GP:s. Sunny Beach Length: 4108 m This is the classic course from RR1. It is a pretty easy course, and if you have played RR1 you won't have such a big trouble comin' first on this track. Green Field Length: 5868 m This is also a classic RR1 course, but it doesn't really look the same at the "bridges". This track can be pretty hard at the last turn up to the Sunny Beach-stretch, as it's quite easy to missjudge it. Park Town Length: 3528 m The shortest regular course. It's pretty easy, but beware of the last turn if you got a car thats hard to drive, as it starts light and then gets harder. To get the best time possible on this track, pick a car with good handling. Airport Oval Length: 3428 m The shortest course. This track can be hard, as you'll need to learn to race the best line possible. This is the only track in RRV that you'll need some knowledge in real racing. Watch out for the second turn; turn out to your right and take it hard. Note: DO NOT SLIDE IN ANY TURN ON THIS TRACK! Bayside Line Length: 7830 m The longest track, and maybe the hardest. I think that you should try it sometimes in Freerun before racing on it. Otherwise, this is the same stretch as Outer Pass. Above The City Length: 5193 m About the same stretch as Park Town, but it's a bit longer. The turn after the highway can be tough, but if you just remember it, you shouldn't have any problem with this track. Outer Pass Length: 4535 m One of my favourites. It's not too long, niether too short and it's quite challenging, but doesn't get too hard. A fun track wich is a mixup with the Sunny Beach and the Bayside Line-stretch. *********** *4.0 Races* *********** 4.1 Grand Prix The race-series are four rounds each, exept for the last "oval-race". The time of the day vary from one time to another, so there's impossible for me to tell what time of day it'll be. The courses may also vary in all the Extra class-races, exept for the latest "oval-race". STANDARD CLASS: One series only. This cup is so easy to win, that if you don't win it the first time you play it, you can give up the hope to win anything in this game. The best car to start with is Kamata Fortune.
