Welcome to my guide for the connoisseur's choice when it comes to football
games, Pro Evolution Soccer! I know that some people prefer to call it
"Soccer", but - being British - I find this hard to swallow. I do not mean
to cause any offence or ambiguity, but I shall persist in calling the World's
most popular sport by its most widely used name.
Also, I have referred to all players and clubs by their real-life names, e.g.
Ronaldo instead of "Radolno", and Arsenal and Juventus instead of "London" or
"Piemonte" moniker bestowed upon it by the cheapskates at KCET (only joking,
guys I love you, please continue to release games of such high quality...)
I hope this guide will assist you in playing, and will go some way to make
you enjoy playing Pro Evolution Soccer even more.
Take care and enjoy my work,
Richard Arnatt (guitarfreak86@hotmail.com)

===============================================================================
This Guide can only be viewed or downloaded from the following sites:
• GameFAQs
THE DIAGONAL THROUGH PASS
-------------------------
• What is it?
Another simple method that can be extremely useful when starting out in
Master League, where your players are too slow to perform darting runs.
Possibly the most satisfying way to score against human opponents.
• How do I do it?
This works best if one of your CFs plays slightly deeper than the other,
creating a natural "link-up" style of play. For some reason, the CPU is
nowhere near as good at judging diagonal passes as it is at straight ones.
Exploit this frequently by passing diagonally between the central defenders.
The defenders cannot deal with this easily, increasing your likelihood of
scoring dramatically. Be careful about getting caught offside though!
• Ease of use - 7/10
• Effectiveness - 8/10
THE LIGHTNING CORNER
--------------------
• What is it?
A low-trajectory corner that is too quick for the CPU goalie to deal with.
Success rate from scoring with headers is greatly improved.
• How do I do it?
Don't adjust the direction of your corner, just hold [U] and fill the gauge
to about 2/3 full. The resulting ball should provide your attackers with a
simple header on goal.
• Ease of use - 9/10
• Effectiveness - 7.5/10
THE "ONE-TWO"
-------------
• What is it?
A movement that involves two players making a quick exchange of passes to get
the better of a defender.
• How do I do it?
Get to the edge of the box and pass using (L1)+(X), followed by a sharp tap of
triangle. The return pass will go behind the defender, allowing your player to
run onto it and score.
• Ease of use - 6/10
• Effectiveness - 6/10
THE STRAY SB
------------
• What is it?
This one has served me well during the years. It's a simple enough manoeuver
that manages to completely fool the CPU defenders practically every time.
• How do I do it?
Give the ball to one of your central midfielders and have him dribble down
either wing. Don't hold (R1), normal pace should be enough. Eventually, the
CPU side back will become frustrated and will stray out of his position,
leaving a big gap for your winger to run into.
Knock a through-pass forward for your SMF or WG and have him center the ball
The defence doesn't have enough time to react to this, leaving you with an
uncontested header on goal.
This takes a lot of practice to master. Its all about luring out the defender,
without allowing him to tackle you.
• Ease of use - 4/10
• Effectiveness - 6/10

================================================================== #####
Okay, so now you know how to play to a decent standard. Now let's look at the
tactical side of things. Here, I will explain all the non-gameplaying aspects
of the game, which can have a big impact on the final result.
Right, deep breaths, here we go...
===============================================================================
05.a - Pre-Match Settings
===============================================================================
Environment Settings
--------------------
• Day/Night - Sets what time of day the game will be played. Has little
or no effect on the outcome of the game.
• Season/Weather - Choose any combination of Summer, Winter, Fin or Rainy.
during rainy conditions, ground passes are considerably
slower than on a fine day. Also, during the Winter,
players with a low Mentality stat are likely to under-
perform.
• Match Time - Obvious enough. How long the match will last. Can choose
from 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 minutes of matchplay. Oddly
a full 90 minute match cannot be played!
Gameplay Options
----------------
• Difficulty - Sets how well A.I. players play. The more stars selected
the more difficult the match will be to win. See Chapter
5 for more details on each difficulty level.
• Injuries - Toggles whether players can be injured.
• Condition - Set the playing condition and match fitness of both
teams. Red Arrows means that all the team's players are
on top form, whereas White Arrows mean that all players
in the selected team are playing dreadfully (on a "cold
streak"). Choosing "?" means that the form of each player
will be randomised, although the player's Mentality stat
has a positive effect/
• No. of Subs. - How many players can be substituted during the course of a
match.
Extra Match Settings
--------------------
• E.X. - In the event of a tie, an extra period equal to 30 minutes
of game time.
• G. Goal - "Golden Goal", as above, but the first team to score wins.
• P.K. - If the scores are still level after extra time has been
played, a Penalty Shootout will be undertaken to decide
the winner.
"Atmospheric" Settings
----------------------
• Stadium Effects - Toggles whether flares can be let off by supporters.
Note that due to a clause in KCET's contract with the
JFA, flares cannot be let off when the Japanese National
Team is playing.
• Stadium - Select the arena the match will be played in. Many of the
stadiums resemble famous real-life arenas, but their
names are different for legal reasons.
• Commentary Stance- Sets the bias of the Commentators. If team is favoured,
the Commentary will be very supportive of that team.
• Support Stance - Sets which team the crowd prefers. Players Mentality
stats are boosted when the crowd is cheering their side
on.
===============================================================================
05.b - Formations Screen
===============================================================================
Wow, there one helluva lot of stuff to explain here, so this doesn't make for
light reading! BTW, listen to how badly the music is looped on this screen,
it's laughable.
OK, we'll go through it option by option, I think. Probably for the best.
Substitutions
-------------
Allows you to edit your starting line-up, and allows changes to be made during
the game. The players are listed by Name, Number and Position in that order.
This is what the abbreviations for each position stands for:
GK - Goalkeeper
CBW - Sweeper
CBT - Central Defender
SB - Full Back/Wingback
DMF - Defensive Midfielder
OMF - Attacking Midfielder
SMF - Side Midfielder; 'L' or 'R' denotes which flank they are playing on
WG - Winger, Attackers that play out wide
CF - Centre Forward
Also, by using the (L1) and (R1) buttons, you can cycle through the players'
form and suspensions. In PES2, 3 yellow cards recieved incurs a one-match ban,
whilst only one red card has the same penalty. Two yellow cards in one match
is the same as recieving a red card. Note that in some tournaments, receiving
2 yellow cards rather than 3 will still incur a 1-match ban.
In the second page (player form), the green bars indicate how tired a player
is. Four green bars indicates full match fitness, whilst no bars indicates a
player is exhausted and needs to be rested for a few matches. The coloured
arrows on the right indicates how well a player will play in the match. Here
is what these arrows represent:
Red, Up - The player is on a "hot streak" and will play very well
Orange, Up/Right - The player is doing well and should be chosen
Green, Right - Indicates an average performance will be had
Blue, Down/Right - Player performance is mediocre. Avoid playing this player
White, Down - Player is in dreadful condition. Do. Not. Play
Red, Cross Shape - The player is badly injured and cannot play
Orange, Cross Shape - The player is injured, and will play poorly if chosen
Arrow surrounded with a Red Square - Recovering from serious injury
Arrow surrounded with an Orange Square - Will reach full fitness after one game
When choosing your starting line-up, any players that are injured or under-
performing should be weeded out and replaced by Red or Orange players. You
may still want to include "Star" players like Owen or Rivaldo even if they
have a blue arrow, but even they will play extremely poorly if they have a
white arrow.
During the later stages of a match, you may want to replace some of the more
tired players with a set of fresh legs. Even if they are not as skilful,
sometimes the added speed boost will work in your favour.
Formation
---------
Your current formation is displayed in the panel above your squad list. The
yellow dot is your goalie, the blue dots are defensive players, the green ones
are your midfield and the red dots are your attackers.
By pressing (L2) and (R2) you can change this to display each players attack
attitude (covered later) and their squad number.
In the Formation sub-menu, you can:
- Choose a formation from a selection of 21 premade formations
- Create a custom formation
- Set a player's defensive role
The default formations are as follows:
Default - The formation the team plays in real life
4-5-1 A - A well balanced formation with two OMFs supporting a lone striker
4-5-1 B - A more defensive version of 4-5-1 A.
4-4-2 A - The classic "Diamond" formation played by Bayern Munich
4-4-2 B - Another variation on 4-4-2 formation with the Midfielders in the
center
4-4-2 C - The most commonly used formation in English football. Sven swears
by it, I tend to swear at it, but it's all personal preference.
4-3-3 A - Uber-attacking formation with 5 offensive players
4-3-3 B - As above, but with one of the OMFs moving into a more defensive
position
4-3-3 C - A flat midfield line that is more likely to cut out forward passes
3-6-1 A - Offensive formation in more ways than one! Utter ****
3-6-1 B - Fills the midfield but leaves the CF stranded
3-5-2 A - Attacking formation that pays off with practise
3-5-2 B - Defensive variation of 3-5-2 A
3-4-3 A - In my opinion, the best formation available. 3-4-3 with a diamond
midfield. Now if only it was this effective in Championship Manager
3-4-3 B - Like above, but with two DMFs and two OMFs. Not enough width for my
liking and can leave you exposed
3-4-3 C - Same idea but with a flat midfield. Good if you are weak
defensively
5-4-1 A - Good. If "good" means a nil-nil draw
5-4-1 B - Ditto
5-4-1 C - Why did they bother?
5-3-2 A - Strong defence at the expence of the midfield. Good for when you are
starting out at Master League.
5-3-2 B - Same idea but with a defensive twist
5-3-2 C - Like Marmite and Sophie Ellis-Bextor, you either hate it or you love
it. (OK, OK, it's an _awful_ analogy I know)
Custom Formations
-----------------
If you want to adapt your formation slightly to fit with your playing style,
this is the place to go. PES2 has just about the most flexible formation
editor I've seen (at time of publishing, CM4 is not yet available).
Basically, if you're good enough to use this, then you don't need me to
explain it, you just select a player and move him to the desired position.
You'll work it out ;-)
Defence Type
------------
Here you can toggle the method each player defends with. Here's a brief
definition of what each one means.
Covering (CV) - Player's priority is to not allow any ball to breach his line
rather than focusing on any particular region or player.
Zone Mark (ZN) - The player defending all balls within his region. The
simplest way to defend.
Man Mark (##) - Marks the selected player and tries to force him out of the
game.
Attack Attitude
---------------
This is where you set each players attitude. Has less effect on the gameplay
than you might expect, but it give you the opportunity of turning fullbacks
into wingbacks by encouraging them to make forward run. Other than that it's
fairly redundant as most players will respond more to their "Attack",
"Defense" and "Teamwork" stats. It's a nice inclusion though.
Kicker, etc.
------------
Here, you can set the team's captain, and who takes the free kicks and corners
for your side. Captains should have a high Mentality stat, whilst set-piece
takers requirve respectable stats for Free Kick Acc., Power, Curving and Shot
Accuracy. Also, take heed of the player's prefered foot, as ideally you want
a left-sided player taking the left corner kicks. Of course, if your player has
the "Outside" special ability then you're sorted anyway!
===============================================================================
05.c - (L2) Strategies
===============================================================================
You may have noticed a glaring omission from the previous section? Well worry
not as I have decided to give the Strategies page its own segment. Here, I
will describe what each strategy does, and when it can be usefully applied.
Unless you set the strategies to auto (which is advised if you are a novice)
then these strategies are performed by holding (L2) and pressing (O), (^), ()
or (X) button to turn them on or off.
The strategies you can perform are:
Normal - Balanced play
Centre Att. - Focus all attacking play into the centre by moving all wide
players inwards
R. Side Att. - Focus all attacks on the right wing
L. Side Att. - Focus all attacks on the left wing
Opp Side Att. - If the player you are controlling is on the wrong side of the
pitch, triggering this will cause him to stay there
Change Side - All wide midfielders and attackers switch side, to confuse the
opposition and leave their marking in tatters
CB Overlap - Allow the centre back to join the attacking play
Zone Press - Stifle the player with the pass to attempt to regain
possession
Counter Att. - Increase the gap between forwards and the midfield, making long
ball, "Route 1" style play more effective.
Offside Trap - Requires immaculate timing. Causes the defense to move forward
simultaneously in an attempt to catch the opposing striker
in an offside position. Needs to be executed exactly 2 seconds
before the pass is made.
2x Formation - Change to the formation specified.

06.a - Attributes Explained
===============================================================================
The ability of each player in Pro Evolution Soccer is determined by a
variety of numerical values called attributes. A high value indicates that
the player is very able at the field specified. A low value means that they
are very poor in this field.
Here, I will explain what each attribute means and it's affect on the player
possessing it. If you want to view your player attributes, then they can be
found easily in the Formations screen, or in the Transfers screen if you are
playing in Master League mode. If, for some reason, you would like to change
the values of a particular player, this can be achieved in Edit Mode, under
the "Modify Player" section.
These are the definitions of each attribute:
• Attack
-------
Sets the attacking ability of the player. A high attack stat favours
attacking players such as strikers and wingers.
• Defence
-------
Sets the defensive ability of the player. As you might expect, this favours
defensive positions such as... drum roll... defenders and goalies.
• Balance
-------
Determines how sturdy the player is, thus determining the players resistance
to challenges by the opposition. As a general rule, if your player's Balance
stat is higher by 20 than the challenging player's, your player will not be
affected by a tackle. This, however, is not true of aerial challenges.
• Stamina
-------
Determines the players endurance. A player with a high Stamina stat will
fatigue less quickly, and is therefore likely to perform better than a
player with low stamina during the closing stages of a match.
• Speed
-------
Sets the players maximum speed when running. Increases the player's speed
when dribbling to a certain extent. Particularly useful for wingers.
• Acceleration
-------
This affects the amount of time required for a player to reach maximum
speed. A high value means a player will reach maximum speed in a shorter
time.
• Response
-------
The higher this value, the more sensitive the player is to stray balls. For
goalies, this means that the 'keeper is more likely to successfully perform
a "reaction save". A striker with a high response will be able to make clever
runs between pairs of defenders, but this creates a higher risk of being
caught in an offside position.
• Dribble Accuracy
-------
Affects the player's capabilities when running with the ball. A high value
means the player will run with the ball closer to his feet, thus allowing him
to change direction more quickly.
• Dribble Speed
-------
The higher this value, the difference in speed between running with or without
the ball is lessened greatly.
• S-Pass Accuracy
-------
Affects the accuracy of your players ground passes. A high value increases the
success rate of passes by this player.
• S-Pass Speed
-------
A high value equals quicker passes, which in turn reduces the likelihood of the
opposition intercepting your ground passes.
• L-Pass Accuracy
-------
The higher this value, the better the accuracy and success of long passes.
• L-Pass Speed
-------
The higher this value, the greater the velocity of long passes and crosses.
• Shot Accuracy
-------
Determines how likely a shot will be on target. A high value results in more
accurate attempts at goal.
• Shot Power
-------
The higher this value, the more powerful a player's shot is. Players with high
power stats are more likely to score as the 'keeper has less time to react to
shots.
• Shot Technique
-------
This stat determines how likely a player is to score from difficult positions,
e.g. long-distance or when the angle is tight.
• Header
-------
The higher this value, the more accurate a headed pass or shot will be.
• Jump
-------
Determines how high the player can jump, thus increasing the likelihood of
winning aerial confrontations.
• Technique
-------
How skilful a player is. Players with a lower value tend to bounce the ball too
much when controlling the ball, making it easier for the opposition to close the
player down.
• Curving
-------
Sets the amount of curve the player can put on the ball from free kicks and
corners. Does not seem to have any effect in open play.
• Aggression
-------
Players will commit to tackles more fiercely if they have high aggression stats.
Goalies will be more likely to involve themselves in the tousle near the
goalmouth when free kicks and corners are being taken. A player may also be more
inclined to break through the defense single-handed.
• Mentality
-------
The higher this value, the effect of fatigue on the player's performance will be
lessened. The player will tend to make an extra effort and play better when his
team is losing. A low value in this situation can result in the player refusing
to apply himself fully during the later stages of the match.
• Stability
-------
A better name for this would be "consistency". Affect the players ability to
maintain match fitness, even when playing consecutive games.
• Team Work
-------
The higher this value, the more likely it is that passes to other players will
succeed. Also, the player is more perceptive to the actions of other players and
will make more intelligent plays to accomodate their style of playing. When
signing players in Master League, players with good Teamwork stats will fit in to
the squad much more quickly than players with lower stats in this area.
===============================================================================
06.b - Special Abilities
===============================================================================
These are the stars that can be seen under some players attribute lists.
Players possessing these stars may be able to perform special abilities or
they may be particularly adept in some areas such as dribbling or passing.
These abilities, when combined with strong attributes can create exceptionally
skilled players. To find out if a player possesses a particular ability, look
for a star in the field you want to find out about, if a star is visible, the
player has this talent.
Here is a list of what all of the star abilities mean:
• Dribble Ability
-------
Computer controlled opponents or team-mates favour dribbling when in
possession of the ball.
• Post Player Ability
-------
Improves the players ability when standing in the goalmouth during corners
and free kicks. Also minutely affects the players teamwork and passing
ability.
• Positioning
-------
The player positions himself well in front of goal. Increases likelihood of
a pass to him resulting in a chance on goal.
• Reaction
-------
Increases the frequency of the player making darting runs at goals, but also
increases the likelihood of being caught offside. Increases the
effectiveness of goalkeepers.
• Scoring
-------
Increases the player's goal-scoring rate. Essential for strikers.
• Playmaker
-------
Allows the player to perform extremely well timed and paced passes towards
the front line of attack. When controlling this player, other team-mates
will assist you by running into helpful positions in front of goal.
• Passing
-------
Players with this ability have increased awareness of his team-mates'
position and his passes reflect this.
• B. F. Feint
-------
Allows the player to perform feints and "dummies" with both feet. See
section 02.d ("Feints, Dummies and Tricks") for more information on how to
perform these.
• P.K.
-------
Increases the likelihood of scoring from a penalty kick.
• 1-1 Score
-------
Makes a player more likely to score during one-on-ones. Also increases the
effectiveness of chip-shots, in particular the low-trajectory, (R1), chip-
shot. (See 02.c for more info on this)
• L-Throw
-------
Throw-ins performed by this player can travel distances of up to 40m!!
• 1-Tch Pass
-------
Improves the accuracy of direct-play or "first-time" passes.
• Outside
-------
Allows the player to use the outside of his boot when taking free kicks or
corners. Allows the player to curve the ball in either direction.
• Marking
-------
A player with this ability is good at positioning himself, and he is able
to stay with the player he is marking more effectively.
• D-Line
-------
Increases the effectiveness of the "offside trap" by synchronising the
forward movement of the defence.
• Fd. Kick
-------
Able to make "Feed Kicks" or low trajectory passes. Useful when clearing the
ball or when taking goal kicks.
• P.K. Goalie
-------
Improves the goalie's ability to save penalty kicks.
• 1-1 Goalie
-------
The 'keeper will be more responsive to shots from close range, and is more
able to steal the ball from the feet of attackers.
• Injury Tolerance (A, B or C instead of a star)
-------
How likely a player is to be injured by aggressive tackles. 'A' indicates
strong resistance, while 'C' shows proneness to ailments.

================================================================== #####
===============================================================================
07.a - What is Master League?
===============================================================================
Probably the most addictive football experience on any console, that's "what"!
I have totalled approximately 150 hours playing Master League mode on both
Pro Evolution Soccer games, and I would like to think that I have learnt every
nuance of it pretty damn well. Master League is probably the coup de gras of
this game, that nails shut the coffin for both FIFA and TIF.
Anyway, enough salivating/FIFA-bashing (for now, at least), business before
pleasure...
The basic premise of Master League mode is to choose a team and - starting as
a squad of nobodies - build it up to stage where you can beat all competition
and finish first in Division One. You start in Division Three, and your goal
is to win matches and have your team promoted through the divisions to
eventually become champions of the World... wuhahahahahah!
"So, how do I achieve such a feat?" I hear you ask, and God knows enough
emails have found their way to my inbox asking just that, so I'll tell you...
now! It's all about points you see, and what do points win..? Surprisingly
not prizes, but instead they are used to ensure your survival. If your points
drop below zero, you are declared bankrupt, and (wah-wah-wah) it's GAME OVER
for you, my son. So, points are very important, get it? Got it? Good!
These "points" that I speak of are used primarily to pay your players' wages,
but if you manage to accumulate a stack of the things, then you are able to
sign new players to strengthen your squad. You win points by winning matches
and vice versa if you suffer a defeat, simple as that... well, it's a bit
more complicated than that, truth be told. So complicated, in fact, that I've
dedicated a section to it (07.b). Players' wages are deducted after each
fixture, so bear this in mind when attempting to buy new ones. Buy too many
and the extra wages might thump your finances into the red, which you
_definitely_ want to avoid.
The teams are split into three "divisions", aptly named Division One,
Division Two and Division Three. Divisions One and Two consist of 16 teams,
with the smaller Division Three consisting of just 10 teams. Fixtures are
arranged in a manner that each team will play every other in their division
twice, once at home and once away. The rankings are decided by each team's
"points" score. This might confuse some, but these points are NOT the points
mentioned in the last paragraph, but another quantity applied to each team
to determine their league standing. Every win in the league will gain you
3 points, a tie will get you a single point, and losing gets you nothing,
nada, zilch. In the event that two or more teams' points are equal, then
the team's goal difference is used to separate them (goals scored minus
goals conceded). The team ranked first after all fixtures have been played
are declared champions.
Besides the regular league-based format of the three divisions, there's also
a couple of round robin tournaments for you to negotiate:
• The Tiny Cup - Tournament for Division Three teams only, taking place
directly after the end of the season.
• The Masters Cup - Another tournament but only for teams in the top two
divisions. Consists of five rounds, interspersed between
the regular league fixtures.
Winning these extra competitions will result in a sizeable increase in your
points balance, so they should not be taken lightly.
===============================================================================
07.b - Points
===============================================================================
There is a simple formula to determine how many points you will receive in
a fixture:
POINTS = RESULT BONUS + GOAL BONUS + CUP BONUS
Listed below are the values awarded for each type of fixture, which can then
be substituted into the above formula to work out the points won in a match.
It is worth noting that there is no difference in the way that points are
allocated in each difficulty, it just feels like it ;) Also, points are not
lost for conceding goals, so winning 2-1 is the same as winning 2-0. It's the
one aspect of the system that I don't like, but who am I to complain?
Every match result will award you points in the following manner
Win: 10pts
Draw: 3pts
Loss: 0pts
Goal: 1pt (per goal)
For example, a 3-0 win will award you with 13 points, from which your players'
salaries will be deducted.
As you will probably work out for yourself, this piddling amount won't buy you
many new players. In 5-star you'll be lucky to get through a season avoiding
bankruptcy, believe me. To earn the serious money you need to win competitions
such as the league titles and the various cup competitions. Not only does
winning the Master's Cup win you thousands of points, but no salary points are
expended in cup games either. Awesome *air-guitars*!!
So remember, league for survival, cups for players - unless you're on Easy of
course. You really would have to _try_ and make yourself bankrupt on this
setting. If you stick to this then survival in Master League should come more
easily :)
===============================================================================
07.c - Transfers
===============================================================================
The only way to improve your squad in Pro Evo is to buy better players, or
to loan them from other clubs. Unfortunately, the way transfers are dealt with
is different depending on your difficulty setting, so what works in Easy might
not work in hard mode. So you're going to need to do a bit of experimenting
yourself. You can do it, yeah ^_^!!
Transfer Value
--------------
This value is only visible when negiotiating a contract with a player who is
tied to another club. This value is how many points the player's club want in
order to release their player. Clubs are unlikely to sell short of their
asking price, so expect to pay in excess of 65 points (ouch) for World class
players like Totti, Zidane or Recoba.
Yearly Wages
------------
This value is paid by the player's club every year. As a general rule, a
player will not want to leave his club for anything less than what he is
already being given. Exceptions to this include if a player is not a first
-team regular, has been dropped due to a new signing taking his place or, of
course, if the player is playing in a lower division. Don't pay more than a
player will be worth to you. If he is costing you 20 points a season, you need
to make sure that his presence will ensure an extra goal every game.
Useful Advice
-------------
In Master League, you need to be very careful which players you invest in. Unless
you're in Division One and your goal is to build a super-team (covered later),
only buy players you intend to play in the first-choice lineup. If you play 442
then there is little need to blow your wad on three strikers. Although they
aren't brilliant, your default team will do as substitutes even at the highest
level.
And of course, make sure you buy a range of players. It's alright if your
strikers score three times a match, but if your weaker defence let's four through
then you are, as we experts call it, "screwed"!
Right, now you know _how_ to transfer players, you want to know _what_ players
you should buy?! Well if you would just gimme a sec I was going to do that
next...
===============================================================================
07.d - Best Buys
===============================================================================
OK, this is how it works. I write down all of the positions available in the
game. I then list the best players in that position, and for the Extreme
players out there, I also put in a couple of decent players you might want on
a tight budget. Then, you read it and take heed. You then become better at
Master League mode. Simple, capische. Even simpler, I've marked all the cheap
players with a *.
BEST GKs
--------
Oliver Kahn - Germany - B. Munich
Gianluigi Buffon - Italy - Juventus
Fabien Barthez - France - Man Utd.
Josè Luis Chilavert (Chavilert) - Paraguay - No Club
Schumacher (Schucher) - Gen. Germany - No Club
Oscar Cordoba (I. Bocorda) - Colombia -
My Pick: Yashin, every time. 150 penalty saves in a career, what more can I
say. Won't let you down due to his large frame and lightning-quick
response. If you haven't unlocked him yet, go with Kahn. He ain't
cheap, mind. In Division Three, try loaning Robinson for someone
decent between the sticks.
BEST CBT/CBWs
---------
Alessandro Nesta - Italy - Lazio
Fabio Cannavaro - Italy - Parma
Jaap Stam - Netherlands - Lazio
Frank De Boer - Netherlands - Barcelona
Paolo Maldini - Italy - A. C. Milan
Franz Beckenbauer (Badenfauer) - Gen. Germany - No Club*
Frank Rijkaard - Her. Holland - No Club*
Enzo Scirea - Imm. Italy - No Club*
Taribo West - Nigeria - No Club*
Carlos Gamarra (Garama) - Paraguay - No Club*
My Pick: Rijkaard, he is pure class. An excellent tackler, passer and ball
-holder, capable of making decisive clearances and darting runs. To
partner him, I would choose Cannavaro over Nesta, despite his lower
defense stat. He is tall and a brilliant header of the ball, as well
as being solid enough to stop dead any forward in his tracks.
BEST SBs
--------
Roberto Carlos (Roberto Larcos) - Brazil - Real Madrid
Cafu (Facu) - Brazil - Roma
Bixente Lizarazu - France - B. Munich
Lilian Thuram - France - Parma
Carlos Puyol - Spain - Barcelona
V. Bronckhorst - Netherlands - Arsenal
Passarella (Pallera) - Al. Argentina - No Club*
De la Cruz (Ulisees) - Ecuador - No Club*
My Pair: Passarella and Thuram, could cause some controversy, but I like using
my SBs for their primary purpose, defending. They just don't come
more solid than these two.
BEST DMFs
---------
Roy Keane - Ireland - Man Utd.
Emerson (Esermon) - Brazil - Roma
Stefan Effenberg - Germany - B. Munich
Franz Beckenbauer (Badenfauer) - Gen. Germany - No Club*
My Pick: Beckenbauer or Keane, depending on your style of play. I normally side
with Keane due to his high mentality and teamwork stats, but it'd hard
to argue against playing Beckenbauer, who just oozes class. It's your
call really, but bear in mind that Keane'll hurt your wallet more.
BEST LMFs (or LWG)
---------
Rivaldo (Ravoldi) - Brazil - Barcelona
Marc Overmars - Netherlands - Barcelona
Roberto Carlos (Roberto Larcos) - Brazil - Real Madrid
Figo - Portugal - Real Madrid
Edgar Davids - Netherlands - Juventus
Pavel Nedved (Navdid) - Czech Republic - Juventus
Ryan Giggs (Gigsi) - Wales - Man Utd.
My Pick: So many to choose from, but Rivaldo's superior crossing and long-
range shooting ability gives him the edge over the competition. You
could buy any of these and feel very satisfied indeed :)
BEST RMFs (or RWG)
---------
David Beckham - England - Man Utd.
Figo - Portugal - Real Madrid
Tijani Babangida - Nigeria - No Club*
My Pick: You want speed, go for Babangida. You want practically everything
else, go with Goldenballs himself, David Beckham. And if you want to
have your proverbial cake and eat it then Figo is your man.
BEST OMFs
---------
Pele (Perles) - C. Brazil - No Club
Zico (Cozi) - C. Brazil - No Club
Michel Platini (Argenti) - C. Euro - No Club
Johan Cruyff (Craff) - C. Holland - No Club
Juan Veron (Revon) - Argentina - Man Utd.
Rivaldo (Ravoldi) - Brazil - Barcelona
Zinedine Zidane - France - Real Madrid
My Pick: Was there any doubt? Pele, of course, for more reasons than I care
to list. Best. Player. EVAR!!!
BEST CFs
--------
Diego Maradona (Madorna) - C. Argentina - No Club*
Johan Cruyff (Craff) - C. Holland - No Club*
Marco Van Basten (VonTasben) - C. Holland - No Club*
Andrej Shevchenko - Ukraine - A. C. Milan
Ronaldo (Radolno) - Brazil - Internazionale
Gabriel Batistuta - Argentina - Roma
Alvaro Recoba - Uruguay - Internazionale
Michael Owen - England - Liverpool
Hernan Jorge Crespo - Argentina - Lazio
Ruud Van Nistelrooy - Netherlands - Man Utd.
Thierry Henry - France - Arsenal
My Pick: Any of them! Seriously, pick one from the top five and pair him with
one of the bottom six and you'll score 60+ a season. Brilliant.

08.d - Free Kicks... A Cheater's Guide
===============================================================================
I knew it, you're just a dirty cheat really aren't you?! Oh well, I did warn
you. So here we go, the Cheater's Guide to Free Kicks.
Simply line the free kick up as you would in the previous trick, but this time
hold [Down] and fill up the gauge completely by holding down (O). If you lined
it up right, and your luck's in, the ball should fly into the back of the net
at the sort of pace that Roberto Carlos would envy.
The trick to this method is getting the ball lined up so that it will either
go between a defender's legs, or so that it squeezes itself between a pair of
defenders. If you get it right then your free kicks should fire home about 70%
of the time, once you've mastered it.
You filthy, rotten cheat... you disgust me!!
