I never imagined that there would be this many fighters in the FAQ when I initially started it, and the vast majority of the most-requested fighters are among those included below. If a particular fighter was previously listed in this FAQ as "coming soon" or "highly requested," but they are not included below, it is for one of two reasons. Either I didn't receive any create-a-fighter data for that particular fighter, or I did receive create-a-fighter data and it just didn't look close enough to its real-life counterpart. The only fighters who have a huge demand for their creation that are NOT included below are Chuck Liddell and Tim Sylvia. Thanks to all of you for making this FAQ possible! Table of Contents A) In-depth guides for creating individual fighters, listed alphabetically B) A few special notes <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< SECTION A In-depth guides for creating individual fighters, listed alphabetically If you would like to go straight to a particular fighter that you are interested in, please use this handy list of fighters that are included in this FAQ. For example, if you have a created fighter who is 6-foot-2 and weighs 250 pounds, he will appear in the actual game to be slightly bigger than that. In order to correct this problem and make the fighters look as close to real life as possible in the ring, it is generally best to enter each fighter's height as two inches shorter than they are in real life, and each fighter's weight as ten pounds lighter than they are in real life. Fortunately, we have already gone through the process of doing this for you. :) In the guide for any particular fighter, we have listed their real-life height and weight, as well as their recommended in-game height and weight. Also, many of the game's settings for "facial hair" have very little to do with facial hair; they simply change the appearance of the fighter's face in a certain way. So, if you see facial hair listed below for any fighter who doesn't have any facial hair in real life, it's not a mistake. Finally, please note that there are spoilers in some of the "recommended skill ratings" explanations, such as fights that a particular fighter won or lost in the past. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< ANDERSON SILVA (thanks to Bradu, Sweetmg, and Totaljerkface) Name: Anderson Silva Short Name: Silva Nickname: None Discipline: Muay Thai Birthplace: Brazil Recommended Skill Ratings Stand Punch: 8 out of 10 Stand Kick: 9 out of 10 Mount Pounding: 4 out of 10 Takedowns: 4 out of 10 Submissions: 7 out of 10 Endurance: 8 out of 10 Total points used: 40 Rationale for these skill ratings: Anderson Silva has looked very impressive throughout his young career, particularly in his fights against Hayato "Mach" Sakurai and Alex Steibling. Anderson's stand-up striking skills are his greatest asset, and while I don't feel that he deserves a 10 rating in either of those categories, it's hard to argue against an 8 and a 9. Anderson's endurance has also helped him win many fights, thus the 8 out of 10 rating in that category. It was harder to rate Submissions because while he hasn't won any of his nine career fights via tap-out, he has displayed a constantly improving ground game with fluid movements and intricate submission attempts. Normally he doesn't need to win by submission if he can have an easier time winning by KO or TKO. Anderson's only major weakness is a big one: He is very skinny and he doesn't appear to be very strong, two things that combine to make him extremely susceptible to ground-and-pound. He might be able to improve on this weakness later in his career, but as it stands right now, I feel that the 4 out of 10 ratings in the ground- and-pound categories are warranted. Recommended Easy Move Set: Striker Physical Appearance Real life height and weight: 5-foot-11, 175 pounds Recommended in-game height and weight: 5-foot-9, 167 pounds (this is the lightest the game will allow you to make a created fighter whose height is 5-foot-9) Head #2, Color 5 Facial Hair #27, Color 1 Hair #1, Color 1 (bald) Pants: Shorts #1, Color 3 Kneepads: None Footwear: None Entrance attire: Same as above Everything else: None <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< BAS RUTTEN (thanks to The Locust, EdibleGumption, and Cagevsalex) Name: Bas Rutten Short Name: Rutten Nickname: El Guapo Discipline: Freestyle (the words "Kickboxing and Submissions" wouldn't fit) Birthplace: Netherlands Recommended Skill Ratings Stand Punch: 9 out of 10 Stand Kick: 10 out of 10 Mount Pounding: 2 out of 10 Takedowns: 2 out of 10 Submissions: 9 out of 10 Endurance: 8 out of 10 Total points used: 40 Rationale for these skill ratings: Arguably one of the most versatile fighters in the history of MMA as we know it, Bas Rutten was one of the best in the world at submission fight AND one of the best in the world at kickboxing. This is another fighter that would get more than 40 points if there were no 40-point limit on skill points. As it is, I chose to give his sole 10 out of 10 rating to his stand-up kicking skills since that was probably his most dangerous weapon of all. Stand-up punching and submissions were not far behind, hence the 9 ratings for them. His Endurance rating is an 8 out of 10 not only because of his ability to go the distance in very long fights, but also his ability to take punishment and keep going. Just look at the condition of his face in the Kevin Randleman fight, and then marvel at the fact that it was Randleman, not Rutten, who was sedated and almost immobile for 75 percent of the fight. I would have given Rutten more than 2 out of 10 in the two ground-and-pound categories, but again, there are only so many skill points to work with. Those particular ratings wouldn't have been much higher, though. Even in his impressive UFC victories over Tsuyoshi Kosaka and Kevin Randleman, he only won the fights after he was grounded and pounded thoroughly. Recommended Easy Move Set: Free-Fight (due to his versatility) Physical Appearance Real life height and weight: 6-foot-1, 220 pounds Recommended in-game height and weight: 5-foot-11, 210 pounds Head #2, Color 1 Facial Hair #20, Color 1 Hair #1, Color 1 (bald) Pants: Vale Tudo #3, Color 3 Kneepads: None Footwear: Ankle, Color 1 Entrance attire: Same as above Everything else: None <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< BOB SAPP (thanks to EdibleGumption, Hollywood Blonde, Cagevsalex, and The Locust) Name: Bob Sapp Short Name: Sapp Nickname: The Beast Discipline: Freestyle (the words "Kickboxing & Wrestling" won't fit) Birthplace: USA Recommended Skill Ratings Stand Punch: 10 out of 10 Stand Kick: 1 out of 10 Mount Pounding: 9 out of 10 Takedowns: 9 out of 10 Submissions: 4 out of 10 Endurance: 7 out of 10 Total points used: 40 Rationale for these skill ratings: The punching rating of 10 was a no-brainer, as was the kicking rating of 1. Other than that, I didn't want to make his Submissions rating any lower than 4 due to the good submission defense he showed in his fight against Minotauro. His rating of 7 for Endurance is also largely because of how long he lasted against Minotauro in their epic bout last summer, and might have even been an 8 if there weren't other categories to consider and a point total limit of 40. The two ground-and-pound categories were the toughest to decide. In both Mount Pounding and Takedowns, it's arguable that he lacks the speed and technique to warrant a 10 out of 10, but his raw talent and strength are more than enough to warrant a 9 out of 10. They could very well have been 10's if there were no point limit to consider. Recommended Easy Move Set: Striker Physical Appearance Real life height and weight: 6-foot-3, 350 pounds Recommended in-game height and weight: 6-foot-4, 260 pounds (In Sapp's case, it requires some tinkering because the game engine doesn't really factor in the possibility that there could be a 350-pound man who is mostly muscle and not fat. Ultimately, making him any lighter than 260 pounds will make him appear to be way too small in the game, and making him any heavier than 260 pounds will make him appear too fat and not muscular enough. With the setting at 6-foot-4 and 260 pounds, the game creates the ideal look, which is very big, and with more muscle than fat.) His submissions are very good, but I don't think they're among the best in the world, hence the solid 8 out of 10 rating in that category. His endurance has also proven to be pretty good over the years, while his stand-up skills are no greater and no worse than simply "decent," which I have marked as 5 out of 10. He gets a 4 rating for takedowns since he's never been really good at them, and his Mount Pounding rating is up to 6 because he showed some pretty effective ground-and-pound in his 2002 fights against Yves Edwards and Din Thomas. Recommended Easy Move Set: Special (due to his unusual in-ring moves and strategies) Physical Appearance Real life height and weight: 5-foot-7, 154 pounds Recommended in-game height and weight: 5-foot-5, 157 pounds (in Uno's case, I would have made him less heavy, but 157 pounds appears to be the minimum weight in the create-a-fighter mode) Head #43, Color 2 Facial Hair #4, Color 2 Hair #13, Color 2 Pants: Vale Tudo #1, Color 1 Kneepads: Pad, Color 1 Footwear: None Entrance attire: Same as above Everything else: None <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< DAN SEVERN (thanks to TheBottomLine316 and Cagevsalex) Name: Dan Severn Short Name: Severn Nickname: The Beast Discipline: Wrestling Birthplace: USA Recommended Skill Ratings Stand Punch: 5 out of 10 Stand Kick: 4 out of 10 Mount Pounding: 7 out of 10 Takedowns: 8 out of 10 Submissions: 4 out of 10 Endurance: 8 out of 10 Total points used: 35 Rationale for these skill ratings: His stand-up punching was always mediocre, but not horrible. He never displayed much kicking or submission skills, although he gets one extra point in submissions just for sheer effort. Mount Pounding is 7 because he was always decent but never particularly dominant at ground-and-pound, while his takedowns were generally good but not great. I felt he deserved an 8 for endurance because he was in some long in-ring battles, but I didn't feel it should be higher than 8 because he wasn't doing much of anything towards the end of those same long in-ring battles. Feel free to customize these ratings to your liking; I'm sure there are going to be a lot of people who feel that Dan Severn should be rated much higher, and a lot of people who feel that he should be rated much lower. In much the same way as Quinton Jackson, Fedor seems to be improving rapidly, and he easily deserves his 9 and 8 ratings in Mount Pounding and Takedowns. His endurance is a good 7 out of 10 at this stage in this career, but no higher because he got tired quickly and looked fairly unimpressive in a 2002 victory over Semmy Schilt. Stand-up punching is something that Fedor is moderately good at (hence the 6 rating), while submissions and kicking are the only remaining weaknesses in his arsenal. Fedor is definitely a heavyweight to watch in the future. Recommended Easy Move Set: Wrestler (due to his preference for ground- and-pound) Physical Appearance Real life height and weight: 6-foot-0, 233 pounds Recommended in-game height and weight: 5-foot-10, 233 pounds (in Fedor's case, making him any lighter than 233 pounds causes his in-game character to appear far more muscular than Fedor is in real life) Head #12, Color 1 Facial Hair #1, Color 2 Hair #18, Color 2 Pants: Vale Tudo #1, Color 3 Kneepads: None Footwear: Ankle, Color 1 Entrance attire: Same as above Everything else: None <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< FRANK SHAMROCK (thanks to TH0001, Cagevsalex, Erectus4u, Tanky, and Tazzhockey) Name: Frank Shamrock Short Name: Shamrock Nickname: None Discipline: Submission (not enough space for "Submission Fighting") Birthplace: USA Recommended Skill Ratings Stand Punch: 8 out of 10 Stand Kick: 5 out of 10 Mount Pounding: 2 out of 10 Takedowns: 7 out of 10 Submissions: 9 out of 10 Endurance: 9 out of 10 Total points used: 40 Rationale for these skill ratings: This is another fighter that was very difficult to rate. Shamrock clearly deserves more than 5 and 2 ratings in kicking and Mount Pounding, but there are only so many points to work with. One or both of his ratings in Submissions and Endurance would have probably been 10 instead of 9, but again, you have to think of the overall picture. I feel that the most important thing is to convey his versatility, namely the fact that he is good in the areas of Takedowns and Standing Punching, and excellent in the areas of Submissions and Endurance (a 9 out of 10 rating is still nothing to sneeze at). Frank Shamrock is another fighter that will have you begging the game to give you more than 40 skill points, but within the limits that are in place, I feel that these ratings are the most accurate and balanced representation of his real-life skills. He would have probably gotten a 9 out of 10 rating in at least one category, but I felt that the most important thing was to reflect his well-balanced approach to fighting. He's not particularly dangerous in stand-up kickboxing or ground-and-pound, but he is proficient in those areas (thus the 5 out of 10 ratings). What Jeremy Horn does best is work for submissions on the ground, and outlast opponents who usually get tired well before he does. Horn is also good at getting the takedowns that allow all of his submission work to be possible. I think it would be a little bit overboard to give him 39 or 40 skill points (out of 40 possible), but I feel that 38 is well- deserved. Joe Son. Like many people, my first memory of Joe Son is the memory of him jumping up and down like an idiot as if his then-teammate Kimo had just defeated Royce Gracie, when in fact Gracie won a close, back and forth fight via submission. To put it politely, Joe Son has not had a very successful career in MMA. His one and only fight in the UFC was at UFC 4 in 1994, where he lost to Keith Hackney by submission in less than three minutes. His three-fight comeback attempt in 2002 is now infamous not only for his ridiculously bad in-ring performances, but also his entrance attire. He wore loose-fitting, thong-like shorts, and to the horror of all in attendance, they weren't exactly sufficient at keeping everything in place, so to speak. In Comeback Fight #1, Joe Son lost by submission in 30 seconds to a man whose career record in MMA is two wins and three losses. In Comeback Fight #2, Joe Son lost by submission to a man with a 2-2 career record, not because of any submission hold or injury, but simply out of fear. The official result of the match is actually "submission out of fear," which is the only time that has ever happened to my knowledge. In Comeback Fight #3 of 3 (which took place in July of 2002), he lost by TKO in less than one minute to a man who was making his MMA debut and has not yet fought another MMA fight. Taking all of this into account, I hope you understand that while the recommended skill ratings above are pretty harsh, they are well-deserved. If anything, they are generous. For example, I don't believe that Joe Son deserves an "average" 5 out of 10 in punching and mount pounding, but I didn't want him to have sub-5 ratings in every single category. You're not likely to win too many matches if you play as Joe Son, but he still makes for a nice created fighter for comedic purposes. You've got to respect any fighter willing to step into the cage (or ring) and fight, but Joe Son isn't exactly a championship-level mixed martial artist. Recommended Easy Move Set: Special Physical Appearance Real life height and weight: 5-foot-4, 236 pounds Recommended in-game height and weight: 5-foot-5, 226 pounds (in Joe Son's case, you can't even get to his actual height because the minimum height in the create-a-fighter mode is 5-foot-5, but you can still make it look like Joe Son at 5-foot-5, 226 pounds) Head #47, Color 1 Facial Hair #33, Color 1 Hair #2, Color 1 Pants: Shorts #1, Color 5 Kneepads: Supporter, Color 3 Footwear: Shoes, Color 3 Entrance attire: Same as above Everything else: None <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< JOSE "PELE" LANDI (thanks to EdibleGumption, Windkick, and The Locust) Name: Jose Landi Short Name: Pele Nickname: Pele Discipline: Muay Thai Birthplace: Brazil Recommended Skill Ratings Stand Punch: 8 out of 10 Stand Kick: 9 out of 10 Mount Pounding: 5 out of 10 Takedowns: 3 out of 10 Submissions: 5 out of 10 Endurance: 7 out of 10 Total points used: 37 Rationale for these skill ratings: Everybody seems to love Pele, and there's a reason for that. He's an exciting fighter with great kickboxing skills and solid endurance, and his skill ratings reflect that. Unfortunately, his ground skills don't quite match up to that level, hence the 5 ratings for Mount Pounding and Submissions. Pele gets a 3 rating for Takedowns since that is his biggest weakness as a fighter. Recommended Easy Move Set: Striker Physical Appearance Real life height and weight: 5-foot-11, 185 pounds Recommended in-game height and weight: 5-foot-9, 175 pounds Head #43, Color 5 Facial Hair #10, Color 1 Hair #1, Color 1 (bald) Pants: Vale Tudo #1, Color 3 Kneepads: None Footwear: Ankle, Color 1 Entrance attire: Same as above Everything else: None <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< KEVIN RANDLEMAN (thanks to Sakurabaone, AlexAssassin, and Cagevsalex) Name: Kevin Randleman Short Name: Randleman Nickname: The Monster Discipline: Wrestling Birthplace: USA Recommended Skill Ratings Stand Punch: 7 out of 10 Stand Kick: 5 out of 10 Mount Pounding: 8 out of 10 Takedowns: 9 out of 10 Submissions: 4 out of 10 Endurance: 4 out of 10 Total points used: 37 Rationale for these skill ratings: The 9 and 8 ratings in Takedowns and Mount Pounding reflect the fact that Kevin Randleman is very skilled in the art of ground and pound. I don't feel that he deserves a 9 in both categories (or a 10 in either of them), but 9 and 8 ratings are well-deserved. Also, I think Randleman's stand-up skills are generally underrated in the MMA community, so I gave him solid ratings in punching and kicking. On the other hand, there's just no getting around the fact that Randleman has displayed little to no submission skills or endurance throughout most of his career. Randleman has always been held back by the fact that he generally "gasses out" pretty quickly in fights, with a few exceptions. Randleman could be a champion if he ever gets his endurance under control over a long period of time, but until then, he deserves the 4 rating that he got in that category. He was decent at punching and very good at kicking, and if you want evidence, look no further than his UFC 7 classic against Paul Varelans. I imagine that there are going to be a lot of people who feel that his rating in Submissions should be higher. I do feel that he easily warrants an 8 out of 10, but no more than that because he was never a submission master on the level of, say, Rickson Gracie or Minotauro Nogueira. Also, his endurance was excellent for most of his career, but it started to plummet right after his fight with Varelans. He was noticeably "gassed out" during matches with Oleg Taktarov, Alexander Otsuka, and Maurice Smith. Nonetheless, having good endurance for the bulk of his career should count for something, so I am giving him a 7 out of 10 in that category. His ratings in both of the ground-and-pound categories are 4 out of 10, if for no other reason because he was extremely susceptible to it (fights against Goodridge, Otsuka, Smith, etc). Despite his faults, Marco Ruas was still a great fighter by anyone's definition of the phrase, and that is reflected here by the fact that he used almost all of the available skill points. His stand-up punching and kicking skills were decent enough to warrant 6 and 4 ratings in my opinion, and his classic fight against Don Frye should stand as proof of that. While Coleman did have a tendency to run out of gas in some of his fights, I don't feel that it's bad enough to warrant making his Endurance rating any lower than 6 out of 10. Also, he gets a 6 rating in Submissions partially because of his quick submission victory over Dan Severn, but primarily because of his good submission defense over the years. He's only ever lost by submission two times. One of them was in a fight that is widely known to have been worked, while the other was against a man who is widely regarded as the best submission fighter in the world (Minotauro). Coleman "only" got 9 out of 10 ratings in the two ground-and-pound categories partially because there were only 40 skill points to work with, but I'm not sure that I would have given him 10's anyway. His Mount Pounding was always incredibly good, but it never had quite the same level of efficiency as, say, Randy Couture or Matt Hughes or Tito Ortiz. Also, when deciding whether to give a fighter a 10 rating in takedowns, one of the questions that you have to ask yourself is, "Were they able to take down their opponents at will, even if the fights that they lost?" The answer is yes for people like Mark Kerr and Matt Hughes, but the answer is no in Coleman's case. Overall, Coleman was a great fighter, and one that will go down in history as the first pioneer of modern-day ground- and-pound techniques. He never displayed any better-than- decent submission skills, he shied away from throwing kicks while standing, and his endurance was a problem for him a few times (fights against Fujita, Vovchanchyn, etc). Still, this doesn't change the fact that he was one of the best ground-and-pound specialists in the world for a long time (and may be once again very soon). Even in the fights he lost, Kerr was still able to take his opponents down almost at will. Also, his stand-up punching is something that I feel is generally underrated. The guy won every stand-up battle he ever had, until he went in the ring with one of the best strikers the sport has ever seen (Igor Vovchanchyn). Recommended Easy Move Set: Wrestler Physical Appearance Real life height and weight: 6-foot-0, 250 pounds Recommended in-game height and weight: 5-foot-10, 230 pounds (in Kerr's case, making him 240 pounds instead of 230 makes him look too fat and not muscular enough) Head #9, Color 2 Facial Hair #1, Color 1 (none) Hair #6, Color 2 (could also be bald if you thought he looked better that way) Pants: Vale Tudo #3, Color 3 Kneepads: Pad, Color 3 Footwear: Shoes, Color 3 Entrance attire: Same as above Everything else: None <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< MIKEY BURNETT (thanks to Sakurabaone and TwistedandBroken) Name: Mikey Burnett Short Name: Burnett Nickname: Eastside Assassin Discipline: Submission/Boxing Birthplace: USA Recommended Skill Ratings Stand Punch: 6 out of 10 Stand Kick: 4 out of 10 Mount Pounding: 5 out of 10 Takedowns: 5 out of 10 Submissions: 7 out of 10 Endurance: 7 out of 10 Total points used: 34 Rationale for these skill ratings: Mikey Burnett is a tough fighter to rate because he's a very likable guy, but he was never a particularly accomplished fighter. His career record was 4-2, and only one of those four wins came against a fighter with a winning record. His punching skills were certainly good enough to warrant a 6 out of 10 rating, but with the possible exception of one fight, he never really showed anything that would make me think he deserves a higher rating than 6 in punching. Mount Pounding and Takedowns were areas in which Mikey was decent but nothing special, as was stand-up kicking. His strengths as a fighter were in the areas of submissions and endurance. He was good at both of them, but still quite not at the level of an 8 or 9 rating in either category. He is already one of the best kickboxers in the world, hence the high ratings for stand-up skills. He has shown fairly good endurance along with decent ground and pound skills. His takedowns and submissions remain big weaknesses, but he still made out pretty well overall with the ratings. His biggest strength was probably his endurance, as he was in some long battles and he came out on top in most of them. His ground-and-pound game was also pretty good, although I don't even think the term "ground and pound" was invented (or at least widely used) until Mark Coleman ushered in a new era of amateur wrestlers competing in MMA. Oleg also won his fair share of fights by submission, with the most high-profile example being his victory over Tank Abbott. If Taktarov had any major weakness, it would be his stand-up striking ability. Only one of Oleg's 17 career fights ended with him winning by KO or TKO, and sadly, he may be remembered most for being brutally knocked out late in his career by Renzo Gracie and Gary Goodridge. These skill ratings do a fairly accurate job of representing the fighter that Oleg Taktarov was in real life. He's not going to be the best fighter in the game, but he's still a damn good one. His ground-and-pound skills have always been decent, while takedowns and submissions have never been among Rizzo's strong points. His takedowns are a 10 out of 10 not only because of the fact that he gets them almost at will, but also because the takedowns themselves often cause a significant amount of damage to his opponent, and he has actually won fights on a takedown. Doing it against non-top-level fighters was one thing, but doing it against Igor Vovchanchyn proved that Quinton Jackson is the real deal. His mount pounding skills are already a 9 out of 10, but not yet on the "all-time great" level of 10 like, say, Randy Couture or Matt Hughes. His punching skills and endurance have both proven to be good but not great at this stage in his career, thus the 7 ratings in both of those categories. Submissions and stand-up kicking appear to be Jackson's only remaining weak points. Recommended Easy Move Set: Wrestler Physical Appearance Real life height and weight: 6-foot-1, 204 pounds Recommended in-game height and weight: 5-foot-11, 204 pounds (in Jackson's case, making him any less than 204 pounds makes him appear to be much too skinny in the game, but at the same time I wouldn't want to make him any heavier than his actual real-life weight of 204 pounds) Head #14, Color 5 Facial Hair #27, Color 1 Hair #2, Color 1 Pants: Kickboxing #3, Color 5 Kneepads: None Footwear: Ankle, Color 1 Entrance attire: Same as above Everything else: None <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< RANDY COUTURE (thanks to Cagevsalex and TapOutKings) Name: Randy Couture Short Name: Couture Nickname: The Natural Discipline: Wrestling Birthplace: USA Recommended Skill Ratings Stand Punch: 6 out of 10 Stand Kick: 4 out of 10 Mount Pounding: 10 out of 10 Takedowns: 9 out of 10 Submissions: 3 out of 10 Endurance: 8 out of 10 Total points used: 40 Rationale for these skill ratings: Couture gets ratings of 10 and 9 in Mount Pound and Takedowns because he is one of the best and most efficient ground-and-pound specialists that the sport has ever seen. Also, it is extremely rare to seem him "gas out" during a fight, thus the 8 rating for Endurance. He gets ratings of 6 and 4 in the two stand-up fighting categories because his stand-up skills have never been anything special, but they have never been horrible, either. Submissions are Couture's weak point, hence the 3 out of 10 rating in that category. Takedowns: 8 out of 10 Submissions: 8 out of 10 Endurance: 8 out of 10 Total points used: 40 Rationale for these skill ratings: Yes, he got knocked out by Tim Sylvia, but Ricco Rodriguez is still a great fighter and one of the top heavyweights in the world. Ricco's ground-and-pound skills mirror those of his training partner Tito Ortiz, in terms of both effectiveness and style, thus the 9 out of 10 rating in Mount Pounding. His takedown skills are great, and would be higher than 8 out of 10 if he didn't have problems from time to time taking down fighters who have extremely good takedown defense (with Tim Sylvia being the biggest example). Ricco's endurance is something that I might have rated 7 out of 10 a year ago, but his fight with Randy Couture proved that he deserves at least an 8 out of 10 in that category. Ricco has focused on a ground-and-pound approach since his UFC debut in 2001, and has not won any fights with submission holds in that time period, but don't underestimate the fact that he still has ample submission skills that he still has waiting in his bag of tricks. After all, this is a guy who defeated Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira by submission in an Abu-Dhabi submission wrestling match. Your submission skills have to be pretty damn good to be able to do that. Ricco's one glaring weakness is his less-than- spectacular punching and kicking skills, along with his questionable chin. He has had two career losses (one to Bobby Hoffman, one to Tim Sylvia), and they both came when he was knocked out by punches. Nonetheless, Ricco Rodriguez is still a top-tier heavyweight fighter any way you look at it. Nonetheless, he was a submission master and deserves the 9 rating in my opinion. What to give Rickson in the category of takedowns was a hard choice to make. Ultimately, I think there's enough evidence that the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu method of takedowns no longer works (like in Royce's fight with Sakuraba) to ensure that the rating for takedowns can't be 8 or higher, but at the same time I don't think it should be any lower than 7. Mount Pounding is something that Rickson was good at, and frequently used as a way to set up submissions. His stand-up kickboxing skills were the weakest aspect of his game, but they would still be higher than 3 and 4 out of 10 if the game didn't limit you to 40 skill points per created fighter. But as it stands right now, Lawler is one of the fastest-rising stars in the sport. His stand-up kickboxing skills are excellent, and the 8 out of 10 in kicking comes partially from actual kicking and partially from his ability to use his knees as offensive weapons in the stand-up. Lawler also took (and passed) a big test of endurance in his classic UFC fight with Aaron Riley, thus the 8 out of 10 rating in that category. Now comes the big question mark for Robbie Lawler: What kind of skills does he have on the ground? I doubt that he would be horrible on the ground given the fact that he trains with the Miletich crew of fighters, but I don't want to give him good or even average ratings until he shows us, the fans, something in the cage. He has shown no discernible takedown, submission, or ground-and-pound skills in his fights thus far, although that certainly doesn't mean that he won't in the future. I still chose to give him a 6 out of 10 in Mount Pounding simply due to the fact that he punches so hard. I feel that these skill ratings accurately represent Robbie Lawler's skills. He's a very good fighter with all the potential in the world, but to give him more than 37 out of 40 total skill points would be premature at this point. I feel that he deserved the low ratings that he got in some categories because A) I don't recall ever seeing him throw a kick, B) I don't recall him ever showing any submission skills of any kind, and C) If anyone on earth deserves a 4 out of 10 in endurance, it would be Tank Abbott. Fortunately, he nearly makes up for this with very good punching skills and Mount Pounding, although I don't think he's quite at the level of a 9 or 10 in either category. The category of Takedowns is a mixed bag because he has the power to take you down once he gets a hold of you, but at the same time, he is slow enough that most fighters can easily avoid any of his takedown attempts. Once again, I encourage you to modify these ratings to your liking based on your personal opinions, and I expect there to be lots of people who think Tank is better (or worse) than what I've rated him here. I felt that the most important thing was to convey the fact that Tito is one of the best in the world at ground-and-pound, and also that he is a very versatile fighter with good punching skills and endurance as well. So, I just tried to think of his skills over his whole career at large. Punching is easily a 10, but he has never really displayed much in the way of kicking skill. He has also never been particularly accomplished in the art of takedowns, but he still deserves a 7 rating in that category simply for being able to score a takedown on Chuck Liddell. Submissions have never been one of Vitor's strengths, although his ground-and-pound skills are good enough to be worthy of a 7 rating in that category. Endurance has been a problem for Vitor Belfort when he has needed it the most, as he completely ran out of gas in his fights against Couture, Sakuraba, etc. His endurance isn't downright bad, but I don't think it deserves anything higher than 6 out of 10.
