o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | Monster Rancher EVO | o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o (This is taken directly from TecmoInc.com) Monster Rancher EVO presents a true evolution of the series, adding deeper gameplay, strong role-playing elements and a captivating character-driven story to the popular monster breeding facet you've come to enjoy from the series! You'll balance monster breeding with role-playing exploration as you join in the adventures of Julio, a young circus performer with dreams of becoming a champion monster breeder. Traveling with Julio and the circus to seven different towns, you'll encounter new adventures and make new friends who can help you with training and breeding monsters. With a two-phase training system, three-on-three battles and the ability to raise multiple monsters at a time, you'll want to experience for yourself, this evolution in monster breeding...Monster Rancher EVO, the dawn of a new RPG. (/taking things from TECMO Inc.) Now, for those of you who didn't get it, that paragraph up there means one thing. Change, and some of it is pretty hefty. Gone are the days of number crunching, and micro-management, replaced with a more carefree version of Ranching. Replacing it is a nice story, where good guys interact with not so good guys, and fight off danger at every turn. If you played the old ones, don't come into MR:EVO looking for the old style game. If you want that, my advice is to stick to MR2/3/4. If you think you can handle something a little bit strange, and definately catchy, read on. o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | Table of Contents | o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o 1) Version History 2) Controls -Normal Mode -Showtime Mode -Adventure Mode -Battle Mode 3) Menus -Information Menu -Meeting Menu -Adventure Menu 4) Showtime! -Green Orcoro Egg (Melody Slots) -Yellow Orcoro Egg (Melody Catch & Orcoro Flash) -Red Orcoro Egg (Melody Stamp & Orcoro Flash) 5) Gadgets -Effect Kits -Geonyte Tanks -Props (Incomplete) 6) Adventure! 7) Battle! 8) Characters (SPOILERS!) Data - Here you can see various types of Data. Monster allows you to view the stats etc. of your current monsters. Breeder lets you check up on your Fame, Money, Guild records, and Current Mission. Property takes you to another menu, where Item shows you your items in Material, Valuable, Gadget Parts, Consumable, and Equipment categories. Book allows you to view the Monster Book, which contains 3D images, stats, and descriptions of the monster breeds you have added to it. Neat! 2. Anima - Allows you to use your monster's Anima Points, accumulated by battling other monsters on Adventures, on Skills and Traits. Skills are specific attacks, where Traits are supportive, to either the monster, or the whole team. 3. Program - Lets you view the settings you alter with the Information option via the Meeting Menu. Useful to determine what Gadgets you're currently using. 4. Next Week - Skips you ahead to the next week's meeting. If you've moved the story ahead, then an event may occur. Meeting Menu ------------ 1. Schedual - Choose this option when you want to select an activity for future weeks. Training/Rest, Showtime, Adventure, and Moving can be found here. (NOTE: Moving isn't available until after you complete the main quest.) Training/Rest builds up Motivation and Bonding. Showtime is the only way to raise a monster's attributes. You can make one monster the MVP, and increase their gain, as well! Adventure is the main way to gain Anima Points, and certain types of items, and is the most used way to advance the storyline. Complete Dungeon --> Move, repeat until the game is over. Simple, no? 2. Information - Choose this option to control how your monster trains. The face on the far left is the Breeder/Entertainer's. The heart to the right of that is the Bonding rating, further to the right is the monster's portrait. The monster face represents it's Main Breed (You should see Piroro off the bat.) Keep going right, and you find the Trick Icon, choose it to change which Gadget your monster is training with, as the monster gets better at a Trick, it's level goes up and the monster will earn more Attributes from performing. Onwards to the right is the name of the trick, and below that is the monster's Motivation. Eventually, it will fill up all the way yellow, in the letters, when this happens it is the best time to put on a show! The icon on the far right represents what the monster is doing this week. The guy lifting weights means Training, .zZ means Resting, and the bandage icon means your monster has been injured and is still recuperating. Shame on you! 3. Nayuta - Choose Nayuta for all of your Saucer Shrine needs! She can Create monsters from CDs/DVDs, from Saucers, or from your Monster Book. The Monster Book is a handy addition that saves the base data of each monster breed you pop off a disk, or a Saucer, so you don't have to fish it out next time. Nayuta can also combine two Sealed monsters, she can Seal monsters back into Saucers (they retain their Attributes, but lose all of their Bonding and Motivation. Careful with this.) Nayuta can, lastly, Donate Saucers to the Saucer Shop. If your Bonding is high, the Breeder will complain about you removing the monster. Don't worry, they just like the monster, but they'll like the new one just as much, with enough time spent training it. 4. Option - You can Save your data, Load your data, and Configure options with this... option. Configure allows you to change the screen's alignment to be more centered, and gives you a colour bar to adjust your TV's brightness. Nifty. You can also change the sound from Stereo to Mono (not Monol, sadly.) You can also raise or lower the volume of the BGM or SFX here, or set it all back to the Default settings. 5. Closing - By selecting Albert's head, you end the meeting, and can get on with the rest of the week's activities. Note that on a Show or Adventure day, this whole menu will not be present, since the week's event overrides the need for a Meeting. Adventure Menu -------------- 1. Data - Here you can see various types of Data. Just as neat as the Normal Menu type! 2. Anima - Allows you to use your monster's Anima Points, accumulated by battling other monsters on Adventures, on Skills and Traits. Skills are specific attacks, where Traits are supportive, to either the monster, or the whole team. 3. Map - Brings up the map of the area. Enemies show up as Red Dots, Treasure Chests are Blue Squares, Julio is a Green Arrow, and your monster is a Yellow Arrow. 4. Formation - Allows you to change your monsters' Battle Formation, and view the Equipment they have with them. 5. Return - Takes you out of the Adventure locale, and back to the town you came from. There's no disadvantage, and you keep all of your AP and items, so if you're in over your head, pop out with this one! o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | Showtime! | o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o You put on Shows with your Circus Troupe in order to raise money, and to raise the attributes of your monsters. o-------------o--------------------------------------------------------------o | Attribute | Effect | |-------------o--------------------------------------------------------------o | Power | Increases the damage of Pow-based skills (yellow icon). | | Intelligence| Increases the damage of Int-based skills (green icon). | | Life | Your HP total in battle. These higher level tricks will generally please a crowd more than the lower levels of the trick, so you will get more Coins tossed at you, and more Satisfaction at the end. The level of the trick is shown in the Information section, in the lower right corner of the Gadget icon. (Lv.1, Lv.2, Lv.3). Also, when you're doing a Show, the level of the trick is shown by the number of stars on the top of the Orcoro Egg. The difficulty of the minigame associated with the Gadget depends on the colour of the Orcoro Egg's nose. Green is the easiest, Yellow is moderate, and Red is difficult. Just because the minigame is supposed to be hard doesn't mean it actually is! Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses, and I find the Red Orcoco Egg's game to be the easiest and most entertaining. Experiment, and get the hang of all of them. So far, in this game, I havn't noticed a significant change in a monster's Training Potential depending on when you put them on difficult Gadgets. In Monster Rancher 4, when you put a baby on a hard Gadget, they'd "burn out", and would die sooner than if you'd done the training gradually. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Green Orcoro Egg - Melody Slots "Try using it at the beginning of the show." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- For the record, I'd copy the explanation given in the game, but that isn't all that effective. The Green Orcoro Egg has a bulbous green nose, and a green mouth. There are a number of stars on it's "head", representing the level of the trick. All Orcoro Eggs have a mask that is very similar to Albert's, along with bright blue eyes, and a white "shell". Pretty neat, really. For the Melody Slots, you have to match the icons that slide down the Slot Reel on the left, in the order you're shown on the Anima Recorder at the bottom. When the icon meets the displayed icon in the lower left, you press the X Button. There are five sets of icons to match up, one by one, until you complete the Trick. You can only mess up three times before you fail that set, and only have so much time to complete it. This is sort of like DDR, for those who've played it. Try to reach a score of 100 for the best monster attribute gains, and crowd Satisfaction. Controls - X Button : Catch Icon (the game says Bullet) START Button : Pause the Minigame (blanks the icons, so you can't cheat, haha!) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yellow Orcoro Egg - Melody Catch "Try using it in the middle of the show." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Yellow Orcoro Egg has a bulbous yellow nose, and a yellow mouth. There are a number of stars on it's "head", representing the level of the trick. All Orcoro Eggs have a mask that is very similar to Albert's, along with bright blue eyes, and a white "shell". Pretty neat, really. For Melody Catch, you have to match the icons in the Target Window, by moving the Cursor over the Icons in the correct order and pressing the X Button. The correct order is from left to right, on the Anima Recorder. You have a set amount of time to do this, and can only mess up twice per set, before you fail that set. If you fail a set, you don't get a chance to play Orcoro Flash for that set. When you clear one set of Icons, the second part of the minigame, Orcoro Flash, will appear. The correct colour Icon is displayed in the middle of the screen. What you have to do is tilt the Left Analog Stick in the direction of the properly coloured Icon, when it is in the centre of the Orcoro-Meter. If you successfully perform three Orcoro Flashes, you get an extra set of Icons to complete! Try to reach a score of 100 for the best monster attribute gains, and crowd Satisfaction. There are a number of stars on it's "head", representing the level of the trick. All Orcoro Eggs have a mask that is very similar to Albert's, along with bright blue eyes, and a white "shell". Pretty neat, really. For Melody Stamp, you have to press the Square, Triangle, and Circle buttons in the correct order to complete the set. You only have so much time, and you're not allowed to mess up at all! If you do, you fail the set, and you don't get the chance to play Orcoro Flash that time. Controls - Square/Triangle/Circle Buttons : Enter Commands Left Analog Stick : Orcoro Flash START Button : Pause the Minigame (blanks the icons, so you can't cheat, haha!) At the end of the show, all of your Breeders, including Albert, will take a bow in center stage. After that, you'll see a screen with the word RESULT in the upper left corner. Below that are the Portraits, Names, Scores, Orcoro Levels, Trick Names, and Motivation-o-Meters for your monsters. One will have MVP on it's Portrait, since it was the Most Valuable Performer. On the far right, there's Prize (money you collected), Fame (how much you have, not how much you gained), and Satisfaction (representing how much the crowd enjoyed the show.) Press X when you're done there, and you're taken to the next screen, which shows the attribute gains your monsters got for the show. Keep in mind that an MVP monster will have better than average stat gains. Press X again when you're done, and bam, you're taken to next week's meeting. Simple as that. o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | Gadgets | o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o Gadgets are what your monsters use to Train, and to perform Tricks for the Show. Each breed can only use certain Gadgets, which makes sense given that monsters have different shapes. Only the Main Breed affects the Gadgets that your monster can use. Gadgets are made of three parts, Geonyte Tanks, Effect Kits, and Props. It takes a professional to put one together for you. For the right price, you can do this at any Gadget Shop. (NOTE: You don't need a Prop to make a Gadget! Also, to finalize construction, you HAVE TO PRESS THE SQUARE BUTTON ONCE YOU'VE SELECTED AN EFFECT KIT AND A GEONYTE TANK!) When the week you chose to go on an Adventure comes 'round, you're taken to the Monster Selection Screen. Choose up to three monsters to go with you, select their formation, and give them some equipment. Then set out! The Circle Button brings up the Map; Red Dot = Stray Monster Blue Square = Treasure Chest The map is -always- the same. No real randomization happens aside from the items you'll find, and the monsters you'll fight. Heck, even the JackintheCho are the same every time you come in. When opening Treasure Chests, watch out! Some of them are monsters in disguise! At least they're not called Mimic. Instead, they're JackintheCho. Always attempt to catch your enemies from behind. If you do, you'll start the battle with around 90 Guts, and they'll only have 10! Don't let them catch you from behind, or they'll get the advantage. When you're simply running, with the monster following you, it can find items at some points on the map. His icon will turn purple, he'll make a noise, and there will be an exclamation point marker over the area. Yar matey, be grabbin' up yer loot! (I call these Gather Points in the guide.) You can ride on certain monsters as a faster means of transportation. I wouldn't bother until you know the locations of the Find Points, since your monster can't find items while it's carting your butt around. o----------o-----------------------------o | Monster | Ride-Style | o----------o-----------------------------o | Jell | Inside it | | Maya | Carried on its back | | Tiger | Carried on its back | | Golem | Carried on one shoulder | | Beaklon | Carried with its pincers | | Hengar | Carried on its back | | Lessione | Carried on its back | | Dragon | Carried on its back | o----------o-----------------------------o o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | Battle! | o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o This area will explain some terminology used in battle. There are a few Tutorial Battles early on to teach you how to move, and things like that. The battle system is pretty intuitive, so you don't need much training when it comes to battles. Just remember, it's better to drain your opponent's Guts if you can. This will stop them from attacking you! Link (ally) - green rings will surround all of your linked monsters, raising the Guts Recovery rate, and allowing Support Skills to effect every monster in the link. When linked, you can perform a Continuous Attack, which lowers Guts cost for skills, among other things. Keep in mind that when linked, a Group Skill will hit ALL linked monsters. Link (enemy) - red rings surround all linked monsters. Long-Range skills are unavailable, you must use Short-Range attacks. Shove enemies away by tapping the Square button. Union Attack - A move that eats all of your Guts, and uses them to hit all of your enemies. I don't think this can miss, but the damage caused isn't all that spectacular. It isn't worth the AP to put Union Attacks up past 3 uses, since the cost doubles each time. (1 = 100, 2 = 200, 3 = 400, 4 = 800, 5 = 1600, 6 = 3200 7 = 6400, 8 = 12800, 9 = 25600. 9 is the highest the Union Attack bar can be raised.) Each level of the bar is a use of the Union Attack, NOT the power of the actual attack. You need to have 50 Guts, and 3 monsters in order to pull off a Union Attack, so plan carefully if you're going to be using it. Haywire - If the Bonding between Breeder and Monster is low, this could occur in battle. Haywire causes your monster to move forward on it's own, sacrificing it's Accuracy and Speed until the condition fades. This can also be caused by certain Skills. Fear - Like Haywire, this happens when Bonding is low or when caused by a skill. It has the same effect, except that your monster moves back. o------------o |More to Come| o------------o o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | Characters (OMG SPOILERS!) | o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o Julio - A young man, an orphan, who was taken in and raised by the Orcoro Circus Troupe. He dreams to be an accomplished Monster Breeder, and understand the hearts of monsters. Julio plays the Anima Recorder, a Tochikan instrument of mysterious power. Julio is a generally happy sort of guy, though he can easily be dragged into depression by a loss, or by failure. Stands by his friends no matter what. (15 years old) Nayuta - A young Tochikan Shrine Maiden. She is charged with saving the world from the evil people of Warp. Her mother is the High Priestess, and her father is the deceased brother of the King of Warp. Nayuta can regenerate, and otherwise manipulate, Anima and Saucer Stones, without the use of a Saucer Shrine. She is a very cheerful girl, and somewhat pushy. (15 years old) Albert - The green-haired, masked clown who is the Ringleader of the Orcoro Circus. He is responsible for all of the day to day chores, and often makes the clothing that the members of the Orcoro Circus wear. Albert is from an industrial town in the desert, known as Tongue Bool. He was also an orphan, though he grew up around two others... Something happened between the three, and he left home. Albert is polite, and helpful when it comes to your training. (23 years old) Gaufre - The circus' Strongman. He may come off as a bit slow-witted, and occasionally brash, but Gaufre is a big teddy bear to the people who know him. He comes from the village of CongaConga, where it is custom to not show one's face unless to a family member. Odd that no-one in the Orcoro Circus has seen it, since he claims that they are like a family to him. Gaufre is to be the messenger of MaoMao, but his mother BigMama, doesn't think he has what it takes. When training a monster, Gaufre prefers Strength-based Gadgets. (21 years old) Marlene - The young, blonde, runaway Princess of Campana. She didn't like her father's overbearing personality, and blackmailed Albert and Gautre into taking her along with them. She is a stubborn, mysterious young woman, who is a decent Monster Breeder. Rumour has it that her mother used to be a dancer in Campana's seedier side of town. When training a monster, Marlene prefers Intelligence-based Gadgets. (19 years old) Tico - The young, lost, Prince of Warp. When humans attacked a group of friendly Warp settlers, Tico was snatched away from his mother and father, and somehow ended up in the Devil's Forest. Tico was raised by a Maya. Like most little boys, Tico is immensely curious about the world around him, and takes an immediate liking to Nayuta and Julio, once he joins the Orcoro Circus. When training a monster, Tico prefers Speed-based Gadgets. (7 years old) Lambert - The Shadow of Marche. The Marche Encyclopedia. Dotty - Dotty is the fire-haired first half of the Violet Cats. He is a self-proclaimed Evil Baron Genius, or something just as grandoise, whenever Julio and the rest meet up with him. Eventually, Dotty realizes that his actions have endangered the world, and forcibly joins the Orcoro Circus in order to repay them for what he'd done. Dotty is infatuated with Nayuta, to the point of not noticing the attention Petty pays him. (18 years old) Petty - This blue-haired woman is the second half of the Violet Cats. Pure evil, or so she claims, Petty is actually rather sweet and caring. It appears she is the daughter of a rich nobleman in Campana, though she doesn't call on Daddy's money, as Dotty assures her that Evil Villains must make it on their own. Petty is smitten with Dotty, her Evil Baron. It appears she's either weak willed, or stupid, because even a brick could see that Dotty's a doorknob... (13 years old) Morgan - The Mayor of Colno. He's got many children, so he knows what that's like. He's a forceful man who isn't above a little lying by omission to get what he wants. (40 years old) Bruce - A Gadget Shop owner who deals in Geonyte. He also leads the rebel people of Grabad against the Weapons Factory. Calls the characters by pet names, and looks rather flamboyant. The rebels call themselves La Resistance... how original. Daisy - A member of the rebels, she has purple hair and wears a cap with goggles on it. She likes to refer to Julio as her 'partner', much to Nayuta's indignation. King of Warp - Jhuchu - The Queen of Warp. Her heart is filled with pain, bitterness, and rage over the loss of her son to humans. As such, she shows a certain fondness for Joker-type monsters, which are reflections of evil and negative emotions themselves. Woo - A squat, husky man from the Warp World. He looks like he's been sewn together from a bunch of different sources. Woo is responsible for the war between the Human World and Warp World, as well as other crimes. Baja - The "Adventure Info Pot", the spirit within the pot teaches you all sorts of helpful things about Adventures, and sometimes tells you about the area you're in. Nayuta doesn't seem to like this charming character. He be speaking like this, so don't worry, you can always call Baja for your Free Psychic Reading. (A cookie to anyone who gets that bit of "humor".) Moo - The legendary monster that could destroy the world. It was sealed away in a Saucer at the end of the old war, and hidden away in a desert somewhere. A horn was created that could control Moo, but when it was defeated, the horn was given to MaoMao to protect, to ensure that the horror of Moo was never revisited upon the world. o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | Walkthrough - Introduction | o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o (This is taken directly from the game, so the translation errors are here) In our world, creating monsters from items called "Saucers" and then raising them is a part of everyday life. We call the places where monsters are raised "Monster Rancher". I raise monsters in a circus, but I guess it's pretty much the same thing. It's kind of embarassing, but I joined the circus when they took me in. Before that, I had no family, so I remember being very happy. And on top of it all, I was given my dream job -- raising monsters... I pinched my cheek a bit. Of course it hurt. Me? My name is... (Here you're supposed to pick a name. Default is Julio.) Julio. My name is Julio. The circus is called the Orcoro Circus. It's my family Of course the main attraction is the monsters! But... That day something happened... Alright, with Saucer Shops, they'll have a random selection of Saucers from a list programmed into the game. I'm sure they vary by location, at least the Monster/??? types do. They eventually restock with different Saucers, and best of all, it's free, even if they call it a shop! When you pick up a Saucer Stone from a Saucer Shop, you'll have the option of engraving it. But hey, it's all up to -you-! Colno Gadget Shop (CLOSED) -------------------------- :( Sad isn't it? As soon as circus folk show up and NEED Gadgets, the shop's closed 'cause no-one was buying Gadgets. Oh well, you'll get some soon.. Guild: Colno Branch (Accept Mission, Report, Trial, Talk, Quit) --------------------------------------------------------------- Here, you can take on missions to capture the Anima of certain monsters, or to get a number of items, or to put on a certain type of show. Whatever the case, be sure to Report your success before time's up, or you fail. When you fail a mission, the Guild trusts you less, and assigns you some crap to do for them, since you've been Blacklisted. When you complete a mission, they trust you again. Simple stuff. Trial puts you in a fight with one, two, or three easy, middle, or tough monsters. This is primarily to test your abilities, but can be used to gain AP if you can't go on Adventures for some reason. Mayor's House ------------- The Mayor, Morgan, lives here. He is the father of many children, and is afraid that the Devil's Forest monster will stoop low enough to harm them. You'll have to talk to this guy a couple times to get the game goin', you'll know when to do so if you followed my advice. o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | The Devil's Forest | o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o | NOTE: All directions will be as if you were looking at the map. If you're | | unsure of N/S/E/W, they're Up/Down/Right/Left, respectively. If I tell you | | to go Right, then it's East, and vice versa. Remember, when I give a | | specific direction, press Circle to open that map! | o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o Basically, this is your Tutorial Adventure stage. If you lose, nothing too bad happens. The adventure is over, and you're sent back to your tent. Big deal. Put on a show in a couple weeks, make some cash and attributes, and try it again later. Always As you enter, there is a Baja Pot in front of you. He tells you to go left, and seems like a pretty decent fellow, go left, and remember that you can check your map with the Circle button. You're facing towards the narrow end of the green arrow. Up ahead there's another Baja Pot... and.. YOUR FIRST TREASURE CHEST! Okay now... deep breaths... Let not the sweet embrace of temptation lead thee down the path of ruin. Or something. Check the Baja Pot first, 'cause my nose is telling me that chest is something to do with this Tutorial! ... Turns out the chest is a present from Baja! Gee, that's nice of him, taking us under his wing and all. Turns out you can tell where Treasure Chests are on the map. They appear as bright blue squares. The Strays will appear as red dots on your map. The treasures are random as well, so I can't tell you what you'll find. (I got a Gold Card 2 out of -my- first chest!) Okay, continue around until you come to the wooden barrier to the east. Press the Triangle button, and move your monster over to them, then press the X button, and smash 'em to kingdom come! (Nothin' like a little rampant destruction to get the blood pumping.) Continue past the barriers you broke, and you'll come across an open area, with a vaguely Mocchi-shaped Stray waddling around. Nayuta will explain about how it's the silhouette of a Stray Monster's Anima. They are filled with feelings of hatred towards people, that turns their Anima black. She says that if you can take them by surprise, you'll start with an advantage.. hmm.. Alright, from now on the battles will be for real, and they'll attack you back! Keep on your toes, and if it gets too rough, head back to town and put on a few shows! From the small clearing where the Stray was, head east again, towards the
area with the two Strays, and the Treasure Chest. Head south back to that
clearing, then head to the north. A cutscene will ensue, and your monster
will find a Gather Point. His indicator at the top left will turn purple,
he'll run to the spot and look around, and make noise. Go there and press
the X button after the game tells you to.

Further, towards the north-west, there are two more Strays hanging around.
Take care of them if you want to, and keep an eye out for Gather Points. They
aren't that hard to find, so I'm not going to bother listing them all. The
monsters seem to have an easy time finding them, so just pay attention, and
above all, explore new places!

Keep going north, towards the big (G) at the end of the map. Before you get
there, you'll see some little blue-haired kid in a potato-sack shirt, with
a wolf's tail and ears. (He reminds me of an anthropomorphic Tiger, though.)

Julio and Nayuta decide to head back to town, to ask about monsters stealing
kids away from the village. Don't worry, you'll get to come back soon.

...Town stuff happens here, just talk to people...

Now that you can come back, just do what you want, and remember to head to
the (G) at the end. When you get there, you'll find yourself in a deeper part
of the Devil's Forest. Here, you see the little boy again, and he runs off.
Nayuta wants to catch him, so on you go!

You can go north through three Strays, to a clearing with a Treasure Chest
and a Stray, or you can circle around to the west, and only meet one Stray,
it's up to you.

Keep heading north.. and eventually you'll run into the boy again! You end
up chasing him into the deep woods... a place full of spooky trees. The
Treasure Chest in the middle is really a JackintheCho, so watch out! If you
head to the far north-west corner of these woods, it will take you to a new
area with a chest and three Strays. Head on up to the north-east corner, and
take the path to the east, to continue following the mysterious kid!

You soon spot the boy again, so chase him through this area, and watch out
for the Strays. There's a Treasure Chest halfway through, grabbing it is a
good idea. After that, there's another scene where the boy runs away, yet
again... sigh... Keep chasing him down!

In the next area, you should go east towards the Treasure Chest. There's a
sparkling pond here as well, where your monsters can regain a bit of Life.
Before you head up to the (G) in the west, you might want to look over your
monsters, to judge whether you're ready for the game's First Boss Battle!

o----------o-------------------------------------------------o---------------o
|Boss: Maya| BOSS! |Life: 363 |
o----------o-------------------------------------------------o---------------o
Maya is a pretty tough boss for the first-timer. But it's a three on one
battle, so it shouldn't be too hard. Be careful of it's ShootRainbow Skill
since it can hit your whole party if you're linked. My Green Suezo did a
good job keeping Maya's Guts down. If you can't beat her, put on a Show or
two to train, and build up some AP for a new Skill. Keep at it, you'll win
eventually!
o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o

After you beat Maya, you have to watch an event involving Tico, our blue
haired little friend. He joins the Orcoro Circus. Get him a monster to train,
it's always good to have a backup. Don't forget to take it along on some
Adventures sometimes, so it can gain some AP. Tico brings a Maya along to
train, but I don't like Mayas, so I just change it out for something else,
Tico'll get over it.

(NOTE: If you're on a mission you want to complete, then -don't- beat the
Boss of the area you're in. If you do, Albert will cancel your mission, but
there's no bad effect, like there is when you fail/cancel yourself.)

Next, it's off to...

o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o
You'll notice that when you arrive in Grabad, it's a sprawling area, with
all sorts of useless scenery. It's pretty dreary. The Item Shop, Saucer

Abandoned Gadget Shop
---------------------
This place is at the bottom of Grabad, and looks to be the biggest of the
Gadget Shops in this town. You have to meet Daisy here after she approaches
you about Geonyte.

o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o
                                Grabad Factory
o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o
This is your first real dungeon, and displays the sort of thing you would
expect from a dungeon. There are no practice battles here, so if you don't
have the hang of it by now, I'd suggest getting in a little practice.
The same rule for directions applies here.
o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o

Begin by opening your map. You can tell immediately that the dungeon is more
complex; it has multiple levels! The places that look like dead ends really
lead you to areas that don't appear on the map right away. For now, head to
the north towards that Stray, and keep an eye out for Baja Pots and Gather
Points.

As you head down a ramp, there is a scene with Daisy. Unfortunately, she
can't go with you any further, and you'll be on your own. Don't worry, your
monsters should be able to handle anything this dungeon throws at you, and
Daisy probably wouldn't be much more than a hindrance. When you take out the
first Stray, you'll notice that you're gaining much more AP from them. Over
100 in most cases. Now might be a good time to build up some AP, and learn
some new Skills and Traits for your monsters. Just a thought, press on and
go up the ramp to the east.

The first time you come through, Julio and Nayuta stop to have a look at the
dam, and comment on the odd, green water in the Factory. Don't worry about it
for now, as you'll be able to get rid of it shortly. Continue up the ramp.

Follow the path around to the big turn-style lever in the middle of the area.
Press the Triangle button, and send your monster to give it a push, it'll
drain the water! Step one complete! You'll notice that that sinister green
glow is gone, and the place looks alot more welcoming now.

Continue down towards the southern exit of this area, and head to the west
until you come to a fork in the road.

Now, if you take the southern path, and head on up the ramp, you'll come to
a room blocked by boxes, with a treasure Chest inside! Press the Triangle
button, and knock the boxes down. Head inside, but be on your guard, 'cause
that Treasure Chest is really... a JackintheCho! Kick it's butt, grab your
loot, and head back down.

When you take the northern path, you'll end up in an area with stairs, and
a large spiralling path in the north. There's a Treasure Chest in the south
so grab that, then head north, watching out for Strays. After the small
scene where Nayuta wonders about the spiral, follow her advice and climb up
there.

Once up there, Nayuta notices a switch! "Nothing ventured, nothing gained",
she says, so press the Triangle button, and send your monster over there to
push the button. The big metal block sealing the exit lifts up! Awesome, now
you can follow the path to the big (G) that marks the end of this area.

There's another scene before you get there... someone's watching you. Who
could it be? Turns out it's Tico and Gaufre! Didn't Nayuta and Julio tell
Tico to stay in the tent 'cause it would be dangerous? Kids these days...

On the next screen, to the immediate east -and- west, there's Treasure Chests
so head over and grab 'em, neither are JackintheCho. Head up the ramp, and
towards the north, keep an eye out for a Henger's head part. It's the key to
being able to unlock Hengers, and if you miss it before you complete the
dungeon, you won't be able to get it until much later.

When you head north, Nayuta stops you beside some spinning cogs. She thinks
they're run by a mechanism of some sort, so you'll have to find a way to
shut them down before you'll be able to cross over. Go north, then to the
west for a Treasure Chest, and some fights with the Strays inside the room.

After that, head east. Don't bother going up the ramp, unless you want to
fight a JackintheCho, but keep going east. When you step on the switch, the
cogs stop spinning, so you can cross over them now! The chest on the other
side is a JackintheCho, so leave it alone unless you want to fight it. Head
east, and follow the path until you come to a room with moving boxes, and a
switchboard just sitting there.

Nayuta wants to pull the switches, but Julio thinks it's a little too easy.
The object here is to pull the switches to stop the boxes from moving, but
the catch is that you have to leave a path for yourself. You can try it as
often as you like, so go nuts, and have fun.

Keep heading west, and eventually you'll come to three boxes, each with a
switch in the north, and a switch in the south. What you have to do is press
a switch for each box. If you get it right, the box won't move, if you get
it wrong, a Stray will jump out at you. I just press all six, since I fight
all the Strays, and the door in the far west opens. (My order was north,
north, north. I'm pretty sure it's randomized.)

The next part is tricky. If you're not careful, you'll be hit (and hurt) by
a train. Wait until it passes the door you came in, then run down the tracks
to the west, away from it. Duck in the first alcove (or the second if you
think you can make it. Riding monsters are fast enough to make it without
hiding.) Keep heading west to the (G).

The (G) is straight north, past a Baja Pot. To the west is a Treasure Chest,
so you'll have to detour to get it. From now, it's a straight run right to
the Boss of the dungeon...

o---------------o--------------------------------------------o---------------o
|Boss: Ogglenock| BOSS! |Life: 1495 |
o---------------o--------------------------------------------o---------------o
Ogglenock is the first Big Boss you have to fight. I call him this because
it's basically three monsters rolled up into one huge monster. The best
tactic I've seen for this is to have a monster with good Speed and Defence
move up and link with Ogglenock, to be a decoy. When linked, Ogglenock
won't be able to kick your butt with long range attacks. When he shoves
the decoy away, move him right back up. Another good way to stay alive is

Guild: Campana Branch (Accept Mission, Report, Trial, Talk, Quit)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Here, you can take on missions to capture the Anima of certain monsters, or
to get a number of items, or to put on a certain type of show. Whatever the
case, be sure to Report your success before time's up, or you fail. When you
fail a mission, the Guild trusts you less, and assigns you some crap to do
for them, since you've been Blacklisted. When you complete a mission, they
trust you again. Simple stuff.

Trial puts you in a fight with one, two, or three easy, middle, or tough
monsters. This is primarily to test your abilities, but can be used to gain
AP if you can't go on Adventures for some reason.

                          Monster Encyclopedia (246/246)
o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o
Still VERY VERY INCOMPLETE!! I have the monsters, but I'm adding them now.
o----------------------------------------------------------------------------o
This is where you'll find beginning Attributes, Monster Book flavour text,
Movesets, and Tricksets for each of the monsters in the game. This portion
will be the largest part of the FAQ. Attributes will be presented in general
level range. Level 1 = between 0 & 100, Level 5 = between 500 & 600, etc.

It is presented in alphabetical order, by General Breed then Specific Breed,
this should allow you to find your monster in short order. For example, to
find Piroro, simply look for the Piroro breed, then under that for the exact
breed of Piroro you're looking for.

Keep in mind in the Description of the monster that it's the flavour text
provided in game, exactly as-is, except for dashes and line breaks, as it
would seem I have more room to work with than they did. So if you spot
spelling or grammatical errors, chances are they're there in-game, so check
those up before e-mailing me some kind of hate-mail-grammar-Nazi letter, kay?

Beaklon
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Beaklon breed is sort of like... semi-anthropomorphic beetles. For a good
comparison, think of a shorter, more husky version of Kabuterimon.

                                Special Thanks

Dria, my fiance, who sticks by me through these lovely, eccentric outings
       of mine.

Abbee Hughes, for twisting my arm into writing this thing.

Mike Stapley, for being a bed-occupying lump, thus denying me sleep, and
giving me the free time I needed to write this thing.

Tiana, 'Nay, Jett and Lain, y'all rock, and keep me optimistic. ^_^

Lisa Shock, for running/maintaining a truly excellent Monster Rancher/Farm
based website. (Also: Thanks to other Admins there) They can be
             found at www.monsterrancher.com

TECMO, for creating the Monster Rancher series, and adding the Garu. But
they took away my Worm.. and Monol.. and Centaur.. Aw well, they're
        still cool!

The Force, for binding all things in the universe and guiding my hand as I
            played through this game.

Agent Altair, Sgt. Sigil, Cap'n Glyph, Lord Rune, and Doc Sanskrit, for
being my faithful, wonderful monsters, ever since Monster Rancher 1.

And a final thanks to Bob Barker. Help control the pet population. Have
your pet spayed or neutered. Goodbye, everybody!
