(FAQEX) XII: Disclaimer, Acknowledgments xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx /////////////////////////////////////////////////// / Introduction / /////////////////////////////////////////////////// The primary reason behind the origins of this FAQ was to crack the damage formula. How powerful certain weapons are, and how much damage they are actually doing has sparked a major debate among the Monster Hunter community since the game was released. The question of various wyverns' elemental weaknesses, what hitzones take the most damage, and what weapons work the best has also been a topic of discussion. Using this FAQ, if you so desire, you will theoretically be able to calculate exactly how many hits from any weapon type it will take to kill any wyvern. How helpful is this in reality? Well, wyvern battling is hardly a controlled experiment in which you would need to calculate the exact number of hits. Most players enjoy playing with whatever weapon they enjoy the most. This guide is not necessarily for those players. As time went on, I decided to expand this FAQ to include things such as poison, stun, and sleep tolerance, and wyvern attacks containing elemental damage. This guide is a detailed look at the inner workings of Monster Hunter's battle system. This guide is for hunters who want to know how the battle system works - not those with an attitude of "Who cares, I just like to hit it until it dies." However, even for those not concerned with exactly how the game works, this guide still will detail exactly how to take down wyverns with maximum efficiency. Not everything in this guide is spelled out for you. You will have to make your own calculations based on the formulas given. However, if you have any questions you can always e-mail fulkth or me. /////////////////////////////////////////////////// / Section I: The Damage Formula / (DFMLA) /////////////////////////////////////////////////// ========================= 1a: The Variables (DVAR) ========================= So you already know how everything works and you want to jump right in? Well, you can start figuring up damage right now if you wish. If you don't understand how the formula works after I explain it here, don't worry. That is what the FAQ is for, and I will explain each section in great detail. To figure up damage to a wyvern, this is the information you need. Listed is a description of the variable and the variable name I will be using from here on out in brackets. [ ] Next to that, listed in parenthesis, is the section of the FAQ you can refer to for further explanation. Attack Power: [ATP] This is simply the attack power as your status menu reads. Don't forget to include attack up armor or powercharms when doing your calculation. Don't use only the weapon attack power unless you have no status boosting equipment on! Type of Weapon Strike: [TYPE] (Section 2b) The type of attack you choose to use with your weapon. Whether it be the overhead smash with a greatsword (.48) or a long charge superpound with your hammer (2 Hits, .20 & .76). Weapon Class Multiplier: [CLASS] (Section 2c) An easy variable to remember. After just a few calculations, you will have them memorized. This is simply a number you divide your total damage by at the end of the equation which helps balance damages between the stronger and weaker weapon classes. Short Swords only get divided by 1.4, while the overpowering hammer class must be divided by 5.2. Sharpness Variable: [SHARP] (Section 3b) What sharpness level your weapon is at when you attack. Green sharpness adds the most attack power (1.125). Simply throw this number into the long string of items you are multiplying together. Hitzone Multiplier: [HITZONE] (Section 7) This is a percentage of how much weapon damage the enemy is absorbing. The higher the number, the more damage is being done. For the chart in section VII, the number listed is the percent out of 100 that is being absorbed. For example, (90) would be put into the equation as (.90). (150) would be put into the equation as (1.50) Defense Multiplier: [DEFENSE] (Section 5) Simply the online defense multiplier for the creature you are fighting. All wyverns and dromes have the same defense increases for online and online+ versions, and dragons are only slightly different. Offline enemies have no defense multiplier, so you can leave this item out of the equation entirely or use 1.0 as a filler number if need be. As a general rule, online HR1-12 wyverns have a multiplier of .95, and HR13+ have a multiplier of .75. Element: [ELEMENT] (Section 4) The amount of elemental damage listed for your weapon. This applies only to Fire, Water, Thunder and Dragon. Status elements don't deal damage and are applied separately from the damage formula. This also applies to melee weapons only. Weapon Sharpness(Element): [ESHARP] (Section 3c) Again, the amount of sharpness your weapon currently has will cause your elemental damage to vary. Green sharpness uses 100% of the status element, while red uses only 25%. Element Hitzone Multiplier: [ELMZONE] (Section 7) Every hitzone of the wyvern has its own strength and weakness for elements as well. The same with the raw damage hitzone multiplier, the higher the number, the more element is being absorbed. (100) would be entered as (1.0), while (35) would be (.35). ========================= 1b: Raw Damage Formula (RFMLA) ========================= So you have your Ancient Blade and you want to go smash some things, eh? Great. But what if you have your Eternal Annihilator? That's fine too. Both weapons have to be put through the raw damage formula first. Once you find the raw damage for Ancient Blade, you're done. With Eternal Annihilator, you'd have another step. Keep your raw damage calculation aside and refer to section 1c to find how to add in the elemental damage. Refer to Section XI for more examples, or continue through each section for a more detailed explanation. And now, the raw damage formula: [ATP x TYPE x SHARP x HITZONE x DEFENSE] / [CLASS] = Total Raw Damage Example Situation: Hunter with Grayburg and Powercharm decides to poke a Rathian+ (online) in the face with a normal stab. His or her weapon is at green sharpness. [ATP]: 494 (Grayburg 483 + Powercharm 11 = 494) [TYPE]: .23 (Normal lance stab, 23%) [SHARP]: 1.125 (Green sharpness 112.5%, or 1.125) [HITZONE]: .90 (Rathian head multiplier is 90) [DEFENSE]: .75 (All online+ wyverns have .75 defense multiplier) [CLASS]: 2.3 (All lances, class multiplier 2.3) [ATP x TYPE x SHARP x HITZONE x DEFENSE] / [CLASS] = Total Raw Damage 494 x .23 x 1.125 x .90 x .75 / 2.3 = 37.51 Congratulations, you have now learned how to compute any amount of raw damage. If you felt like it, you could go online, go to Rathian+, and if you did ONLY this attack, you can calculate that it would take you 214 hits to kill Ian+, considering it has 8000 HP online+. Of course, no one ever does only one attack, and hits only one hitzone, but it's a good thing to know. Fill in your own numbers using the charts provided in this FAQ. ========================= 1c: Element Damage Formula (EFMLA) ========================= So you're done figuring up the raw damage, but now you have to add on the elemental damage... well really, this is the easy part. Just don't forget to write down your raw damage amount or put it in memory on the calculator. Put that number aside and come up with the amount of elemental damage for each hit. Remember that if you're doing a raw damage combo (such as the three hit combo with the hammer), you will have to add in your elemental damage three times: once for each hit. Elemental damage is a constant and is not affected by the raw damage at all. Refer to section IV for a more detailed explanation of elements. The elemental formula: [ELEMENT x ESHARP x ELMZONE x DEFENSE] = Total Elemental Damage Example Situation: Hunter with Black Dragon Spear and Powercharm decides to poke a Rathian (offline) in the face with an upward stab. His or her weapon is at green sharpness. [ELEMENT]: 30 (See: Black Dragon Spear, 30 Dragon) [ESHARP]: 1.0 (Green sharpness for elements, x 1.0) [ELMZONE]: .35 (Rathian's weakness to dragon at head is 35) [DEFENSE]: 1.0 (Offline, has no defense multiplier. x 1.0) [ELEMENT x ESHARP x ELMZONE x DEFENSE] = Total Elemental Damage 30 x 1.0 x .35 x 1.0 = 10.5 (Added Dragon Damage) ========================= 1d: Complete Damage Formula (CFMLA) ========================= Your complete damage formula, taking into consideration both elemental damage and raw damage, looks something like this: ([ATP x TYPE x SHARP x HITZONE x DEFENSE] / [CLASS]) + [ELEMENT x ESHARP x ELMZONE x DEFENSE] = Total Damage. Quite a long formula, I know. Continuing with the situation shown above in the elemental damage section, let us calculate how many upstabs with BDSpear and powercharm it would take to kill the offline Rathian. Take into consideration I am not including three-hit combos, as the third hit in a lance combo is 30%, not 28%, and would throw the numbers off. That can easily be calculated as a 28.66% average, but for simplicity's sake we will only use single upstabs. The raw damage done by BDS with powercharm is: [563 x .28 x 1.125 x .90 x 1.0] / 2.3 = ~69.4 Add in the 10.5 dragon damage we just figured up: 69.4 + 10.5 = 79.9 damage. That offline Rathian (2500 HP) would die in 32 hits. (32 x 79.9 = 2556.8 damage.) Confused? I wouldn't worry about it. Sections II - V will explain more about each variable in the damage formula to you. However, if you understand completely how the damage formula works or simply don't care because it takes too long to figure up, jump to section VI for information on wyvern HP, section VII for weaknesses, and section VIII for an explanation on status ailments. /////////////////////////////////////////////////// / Section II: Weapon Types, Damage, & Multipliers / (WPN) /////////////////////////////////////////////////// ========================= 2a: Brief Explanation ========================= First of all, the myth that greatswords are stronger because they have high attack power needs to be dispelled. No weapon uses 100% of its attack power (except for the golf swing hit of the hammer in a three hit combo). Every attack does a certain percentage of its total attack power, which is then multiplied by the creature's resistance to that type of attack (See section VII for more information.) Elements, on the other hand, are figured up separately from raw damage. See section IV for more information on elemental damage. For example, a Greatsword that has 900 attack power would only do 68 damage with a single sideswing. Not only that, but after factoring in the resistance multiplier, you more than likely would only be doing around 20 damage to a wyvern's legs. However, a blow to the head of a Rathian may do much closer to 60. As you can see, placement of attacks can make a monumental difference in how quickly a party or even a single person can take down a wyvern, but once again, resistance multipliers will be discussed in section VII. Listed for you here is exactly what percent of your weapon's total attack power is being used with each attack. Also listed is a "Class Multiplier" variable which is a constant for every weapon in that class. For example, all greatswords regardless of attack power have a class multiplier of 4.8, while all lances have a class multiplier of 2.3. Your final raw damage calculation is divided by this variable in the final step. See section 2d for a simple formula example. ========================= 2b: Attack Percentages (PCNT) ========================= 1) One-Handed Sword (SnS) (SSDMG) Regular combo (Up x3): 14%, 12%, 8% & 12% (4 hits total, 46%) Revolving slice (Left): 24% Jumping slice (Down): 18% Rolling slice (Up after roll): 15% Guard attack (While guarding): 14% Unsheathe attack: 18% 2) Dual Swords (DSDMG) (Normal) Regular combo (Up x3): 14%, 8% & 6%, 5% & 7% & 16% (6 hits total, 57%) Revolving slice (Left): 10% & 8% & 6% (3 hits total, 24%) Charging slice (Down): 12% & 6% (2 hits total, 18%) Rolling slice (Up after roll): 15% Unsheathe attack: 12% & 6% (2 hits total, 18%) (Berserk mode) Regular combo (Up x3): 18%, 10% & 8%, 6% & 9% & 21% (6 hits total, 72%) Revolving slice (Left): 13% & 10% & 8%, 13% & 10% & 8% (6 hits total, 62%) Rolling slice (Up after roll): 20% Fury combo (Down): 28% & 5%(x8) & 33% (10 hits total, 101%) 3) Lance (LSDMG) Normal stab combo (Up x3): 23%, 23%, 30% (3 hits, 76%) Upward stab combo (Down x3): 28%, 28%, 30% (3 hits, 86%) Charge through (R3): 20% Charging stab finisher: 40% Guard attack: 20% Unsheathe attack: 28% 4) Greatsword (GSDMG) Regular slice (Up): 48% Sideways slash (Left): 36% Upswing (Right): 46% Unsheathe attack: 48% 5) Hammer (HMDMG) Regular combo (Up x3): 52%, 20%, 100% (3 hits, 172%) Side swing (Down): 15% Spinning attack: 20%, 10% (each revolution, up to 5x), 40% (Golfswing finisher) (4-6 hits, 70% - 90%) Short charge (R1): 45% Medium Charge(R1): 45% & 35% (2 hits, 80%) Superpound(R1): 20% & 76% (2 hits, 96%) Unsheathe attack: 20% ========================= 2c: Class Multipliers (CLS) ========================= Weapon class multipliers are as follows: Bowgun: 1.2 SnS: 1.4 Duals: 1.4 Lance: 2.3 Greatsword: 4.8 Hammer: 5.2 ========================= 2d: Formula Example (EXM2) ========================= Example follows: Example I: Theoretical Greatsword Attack Power: 900 Sideswing Attack(Section 2b): 36% Class Multiplier for GS(Section 2c): 4.8 [Attack Power x Attack Type] / [Class Multiplier] = Total Damage 900 x .36 / 4.8 = 67.5 Example II: Theoretical Lance Attack Power: 460 Upstab Attack(2b): 28% Class Multiplier for Lance(2c): 2.3 [Attack Power x Attack Type] / [Class Multiplier] = Total Damage 460 x .28 / 2.3 = 56 This does not take into consideration sharpness of weapon, hitzone resistance, elements, or online wyvern defense. Those will be added into the equation later in this FAQ in Sections III, IV and V. /////////////////////////////////////////////////// / Section III: Sharpness Multipliers / (SHRP) /////////////////////////////////////////////////// ========================= 3a: Brief Explanation ========================= Sharpness directly affects the amount of raw damage you inflict, and can be added to the damage formula very easily. Depending on how much sharpness your weapon has, your total attack power is multiplied by a certain value, as will be shown below. Sharpness also directly affects the amount of elemental damage you inflict. Those variables will be given here, but will be discussed in greater detail in section IV. Green sharpness for your weapon increases the total attack power by 12.5%. Green sharpness for a weapon with an elemental attribute does 100% of the stated elemental damage. The full numbers are as follows: ========================= 3b: Raw Damage Multiplier (RSHRP) ========================= Green: 1.125 Yellow: 1.0 Orange: .75 Red: .50 ========================= 3c: Elemental Damage Multiplier (ESHRP) ========================= Green: 1.0 Yellow: .75 Orange: .50 Red: .25 ========================= 3d: Formula Example (EXM3) ========================= Example I: 900 ATP Greatsword with Green Sharpness Theoretical Greatsword Attack Power: 900 [ATP] Sideswing Attack(Section 2b): 36% [TYPE] Class Multiplier for GS(Section 2c): 4.8 [CLASS] Green Sharpness Multiplier(Section 3b): 1.125 [SHARP] [ ATP x TYPE x SHARP ] / [CLASS] = Total Damage 900 x .36 x 1.125 / 4.8 = ~76 Example II: 460 ATP Lance with Orange Sharpness Theoretical Lance Attack Power: 460 [ATP] Upstab Attack(2b): 28% [TYPE] Class Multiplier for Lance(2c): 2.3 [CLASS] Orange Sharpness Multiplier(3b): .75 [SHARP] [ ATP x TYPE x SHARP ] / [CLASS] = Total Damage 460 x .28 x .75 / 2.3 = 42 /////////////////////////////////////////////////// / Section IV: Elemental Damage / (ELMNT) /////////////////////////////////////////////////// ========================= 4a: Brief Explanation ========================= Elemental damage is figured up separately from raw damage. When using a weapon with a damaging element, you are doing a set amount of damage every time you strike. Short Swords and Dual Swords are by far the most damaging weapons to use with elements, since they hit so frequently. A fury combo with a set of dual swords hits with an element 10 times in about the same amount of time it would take you to get two hits in with a Greatsword. Weapon class ranking in order of proficiency: 1) Dual Swords 2) One-Handed Sword 3) Lance (Charge through attack is most useful) 4) Hammer (Spin attack is most useful) 5) Greatsword The equation for elemental damage is simple. Using the chart in Section VII, find the wyvern's resistance to that particular element. Then multiply that number by the amount of element listed for your weapon, and the sharpness multiplier for elements listed in section 3c. Elemental damage does not change based on weapon type. A greatsword with 30 fire element will do the same fire damage as a short sword with 30 fire element every time you connect with the wyvern. However, greatswords are still dealing more raw damage than the average short sword, so finding what element a wyvern is weak to is very important. An Eternal Strife isn't going to help you much in the elemental department if you're on a Yian Kut-Ku quest, while an Eternal Annihilator or Red Dragon Sword will still take it down fairly quickly. Status ailments are slightly different. They don't deal any added damage initially, but every time your weapon succeeds in inflicting a status hit, the wyvern's tolerance to that status is decreased by the amount listed on your weapon. The animation itself, whether it be sleep cloud, poison cloud or stun "cloud" does zero added damage. This can be verified with a simple test on anything other than a vespoid or hornetaur. Simply attack an enemy with a single hit from a status inflicting weapon then kick it to death. It will take the same amount of kicks whether you got the "status hit" or not. Explained further with an example in the Frequuently Asked Questions section XI. A chart of how much tolerance various wyverns have is listed in section VIII. Keep in mind that wyverns recover status tolerance over time, and each time a wyvern is successfully inflicted with that status ailment, its tolerance is raised. Thus, it becomes increasingly more difficult to stun or poison a wyvern each time the wyvern's status is cleared. When a wyvern is stunned, its tolerance is maxed out. Therefore, you cannot work toward stunning it again until the status has cleared. Using Stun shots on a wyvern that is currently stunned is completely useless. The same goes for sleep. Poison, however, has its tolerance reset the instant the status is inflicted. It is possible to work toward poisoning the wyvern a second time while it is still losing health from being poisoned the first time. However, the tolerance will stop short of the maximum amount until the status has cleared. If using poison shot correctly while a wyvern is poisoned, you should be able to poison the wyvern again in one hit - the moment the status has worn off ========================= 4a: Elemental Weapons (ELWEP) ========================= Final Weapon Forms only: 1) One-Handed Sword (ELSS) Deadly Poison: +36 Poison Poison Battle Axe: +28 Poison Catburglar: +30 Stun Deathprize: +26 Stun Sandman Finsword: +23 Sleep Corona: +44 Fire Blazing Falchion: +38 Fire Monoblos Club: +31 Fire Odyssey: +30 Water Kirin Bolt Ultimus: +34 Thunder Thundertip: +28 Thunder Eternal Strife: +63 Dragon Black Dragon Sword; +32 Dragon 2) Dual Swords (ELDS) Gradios Ultimus +25 Fire Guild Knight Saber +23 Water Cutlass+ +21 Water Guillotine +18 Thunder Dual Dragon Ultimus +28 Dragon 3) Lance (ELLS) Native Spear +33 Poison Gravios Spear +24 Poison Trident +24 Stun Nightmare +26 Sleep Gatling Lance +41 Fire Spear of Prominence +34 Fire Crimson War Pike +31 Fire Vacuum Striker +27 Water Aqua Spear+ +22 Water Black Dragon Spear +30 Dragon 4) Greatsword (ELGS) Chrome Razor +42 Poison Rathalos Firesword +48 Fire Plesioth Watersword +46 Water Frozen Tuna +33 Water Eager Cleaver +46 Thunder Eternal Annihilator +42 Dragon Red Dragon Sword +33 Dragon 5) Hammer (ELHM) Cactus Creamer +26 Poison Titan Hammer +24 Poison Graviton Hammer +18 Poison Binder Mace +21 Stun Iron Devil +18 Stun Teddybear +20 Sleep Dead Revolver +29 Fire Dragonbreaker +28 Dragon 6) Bowgun Ammo (ELBG) Poison S Lv 1 +25 Poison Poison S Lv 2 +50 Poison Stun S Lv 1 +25 Stun Stun S Lv 2 +50 Stun Sleep S Lv 1 +25 Sleep Sleep S Lv 2 +50 Sleep Crag S Lv 1 +30 Fire Crag S Lv 2 +45 Fire Crag S Lv 3 +60 Fire Clust S Lv 1-3 +2 Fire (Per bomblet) Pellet S Lv 1-3 +5 Water ========================= 4d: Formula Example (EXM4) ========================= Example I: 50 Dragon Element SnS with Green Sharpness Element on Theoretical SnS: 50 [ELEMENT] Green Element Sharp Multiplier(3c): 1.0 [ESHARP] [ ELEMENT x ESHARP ] = Elemental Damage 50 x 1.0 = 50 Example II: 30 Fire Element Lance with Orange Sharpness Element on Theoretical SnS: 30 [ELEMENT] Orange Elemental Sharpness Multiplier: .50 [ESHARP] [ ELEMENT x ESHARP ] = Elemental Damage 30 x .50 = 15 /////////////////////////////////////////////////// / Section V: Online Defense Multipliers / (DFNSE) /////////////////////////////////////////////////// ========================= 5a: Brief Explanation ========================= Everyone knows that online and online+ versions of enemies have more HP. But what most people don't realize is that they also have more defense. This can be verified by how many hits it takes to stagger a wyvern. Anyone who has done any headlocking knows that normal wyverns can be locked with less hits and/or weaker weapons than their online+ counterparts. However, there is even a slight defense increase between an offline and online normal wyvern. Even minions have defense increases, although not nearly as much as wyverns. What does this mean? Well, it means that although an online+ version of a wyvern like Rathalos may have 3.2 times as much HP as offline, it is not going to take 3.2 times as long - It's going to take longer. Not only do you have to deplete 3.2 times as many hitpoints, but all your attacks are only doing 75% of their normal damage. It's going to take closer to four times as long to dispatch the wyvern as it would offline. The only reason behind giving wyverns both HP increases and defense increases is that it makes them harder to stagger. Considering how powerful some of the online HR13+ weapons are, wyverns like Plesioth can be tripped every few hits. Allowing this to happen on online+ versions of wyverns would make them too easy. This way, they can leave the stagger limits for each hitzone the same, and just increase the defense of the wyvern. Same result: it was just easier to program one extra variable rather than change -every stagger limit- for -every body part- of -every wyvern- in the game. ========================= 5b: Defense Multipliers (DFM) ========================= Here are the basic rules for defense multipliers: - No enemy offline has a defense multiplier. You may use 1.0 if you desire, but multiplying by 1 won't change anything. It's easier to just leave it out of the equation altogether. - Online HR1-12 minions have no defense multiplier. Again, you may use 1.0 if you desire, but it won't change anything. - Online HR1-12 wyverns and dromes do have a defense multiplier. It is only about 5%, but it is enough that you can headlock with certain weapons offline and cannot headlock with them online. - All Online HR13+ creatures have defense multipliers. Dragons, dromes, wyverns, minions, even felyne and melynx. - It is believed that the only difference between Lao and Lao+ is the defense. Lao+ has roughly 35% more defense, so should take 35% more hits to kill. This is unverified. ========================= 5b: Defense and HP Variation Chart (DFCHART) ========================= Simple chart showing the variation in defense and HP between the three classes of enemies in Monster Hunter. [HP] - Self Explanatory. This is the amount that the offline HP is multiplied by. 1.0 is normal HP, 2.0 is twice as much, and 3.2 is, well, 3.2 times as much. [Defense] - Defense multiplier. The lower the number, the higher the defense. This is actually the number you are multiplying your attack power by, so (.75) means your attacks are only doing 75% of their normal damage. __________________________________________________________________ |Creature | Offline | Online | Online+ | |---------+------------------+------------------+------------------| | | HP | Defense | HP | Defense | HP | Defense | |---------+--------+---------+--------+---------+--------+---------| |Minion | 1.0 | 1.0 | 1.25 | 1.0 | 2.0 | .90 | |---------+--------+---------+--------+---------+--------+---------| |Drome | 1.0 | 1.0 | 2.0 | .95 | 3.2 | .75 | |---------+--------+---------+--------+---------+--------+---------| |Wyvern | 1.0 | 1.0 | 2.0 | .95 | 3.2 | .75 | |---------+--------+---------+--------+---------+--------+---------| |Dragon | N/A | N/A | 1.0 | .95 | 1.0 | .70 | |_________|________|_________|________|_________|________|_________| ========================= 5b: Formula Example (EXM5) ========================= Example I: 900 ATP GS, Yellow Sharpness, Online HR1-12 wyvern Theoretical Greatsword Attack Power: 900 [ATP] Upswing Attack(Section 2b): .46 [TYPE] Class Multiplier for GS(Section 2c): 4.8 [CLASS] Yellow Sharp Multiplier(Section 3b): 1.0 [SHARP] Online Defense Multiplier(Section 5b): .95 [DEFENSE] [ ATP x TYPE x SHARP x DEFENSE ] / [CLASS] = Total Damage 900 x .46 x 1.0 x .95 / 4.8 = ~81.9 Example II: 460 ATP Lance, Orange Sharpness, Online HR13+ minion Theoretical Lance Attack Power: 460 [ATP] Normal Attack(2b): .23 [TYPE] Class Multiplier for Lance(2c): 2.3 [CLASS] Red Sharpness Multiplier(3b): .50 [SHARP] Online Defense Multiplier(5b): .90 [DEFENSE] [ ATP x TYPE x SHARP x DEFENSE ] / [CLASS] = Total Damage 460 x .23 x .50 x .90 / 2.3 = ~20.7 /////////////////////////////////////////////////// / Section VI: HP Values / (HPVAL) /////////////////////////////////////////////////// ========================= 6a: Brief Explanation ========================= You can use the chart above to calculate HP if you want, but I'm sure you think it'd be so much easier if I just provided you with a chart, right? Of course. Just remember that online and online+ wyverns may appear as if they have more HP than stated, but that is because they have higher defense values as well. It not only lists the weakpoints of every wyvern, but exactly HOW weak they are. These numbers represent a percentage of total weapon damage taken by each body part. A higher number represents more damage being absorbed. There are three types of weapon damage. Cutting type, Hammer type, and Gun type. All melee blades deal cutting type damage. Hammers deal hammer type damage. Both light and heavy bowguns deal gun type damage. Each hitzone of a wyvern takes different damage from these types of weapons. Hammer users should attack Yian Kut-Ku's head, as it absorbs 80% (.80) of the weapon damage calculation. Blade users are only dealing 50% with a GS, lance or sword, and would be better suited to attack the wings, which absorb 75% of cutting damage. This is just one example of why it is important to know the weaknesses of wyverns. Study the chart and become a better hunter. The chart also details elemental damage. Once again, the numbers are simply a percent of your weapon's element that is getting absorbed. For example, a hunter with a fire weapon facing Gypceros would want to attack the face, while someone using a raw damage weapon would be better suited to attack the tail. Gypceros absorbs a whopping 50% of the listed fire damage from your weapon every time you hit him in the face. The third thing the chart shows is the stagger limits. Headlockers, this is for you. This tells you exactly how much damage has to be done to a body part to cause the wyvern to "flinch" or "stagger". As you can see, the value for headlocking Raths are at 100 HP for both. The reason Rathian is easier to lock is because she absorbs more cutting damage AND more dragon damage than Rathalos. Also you can see very easily why Yian Kut Ku is easier to winglock than it is to headlock. It takes far more damage at the wings (.75) than at the head (.50) Also, by watching the stagger limits wisely, it is possible to keep it in an endless "trip lock". Deal just under the required amount to stagger at the legs while it has fallen, then just as it gets up, hit it with that final blow to send it over the stagger limit. Poor thing will fall right back over again. Repeat as necessary. Key: [Cut] - Percentage of total weapon damage taken from one strike. (SnS, Dual, GS, or Lance) [Blow] - Percentage of total weapon damage taken from one blow. (Hammer) [Gun] - Percentage of total weapon damage taken from one bullet. (Light, Heavy Bowgun) [Fire/Watr/Thdr/Drgn] - Percentage of total elemental damage taken from one elemental strike. (Fire, Water, Thunder or Dragon respectively) [Stagger Limit] - How much damage has to be done to that particular body part to "stagger" it. This is used primarily in headlocking, winglocking or leglocking. ========================= 7b: Wyvern Hitzone Chart (WHCHRT) ========================= Yian Kut Ku (YKKC) __________________________________________________________ _______________ |Hitzone | Cut | Blow | Gun | Fire | Watr | Thdr | Drgn || Stagger Limit | |---------+------+------+------+------+------+------+------||---------------| |Head | 50* | 80 | 100 | 10 | 40 | 30 | 0 || 80 HP | |---------+------+------+------+------+------+------+------||---------------| |Neck | 50 | 60 | 50 | 10 | 100 | 50 | 20 || 100 HP | |---------+------+------+------+------+------+------+------||---------------| |Back | 40 | 50 | 40 | 10 | 25 | 15 | 0 || 130 HP | |---------+------+------+------+------+------+------+------||---------------| |Stomach | 80 | 70 | 80 | 10 | 25 | 15 | 0 || 130 HP | |---------+------+------+------+------+------+------+------||---------------| |Tail | 50 | 60 | 30 | 10 | 25 | 15 | 0 || 80 HP | |---------+------+------+------+------+------+------+------||---------------| |Wing | 75 | 70 | 70 | 10 | 20 | 25 | 0 || 100 HP | |---------+------+------+------+------+------+------+------||---------------| |Foot | 25 | 30 | 30 | 5 | 10 | 5 | 0 || 80 HP | |_________|______|______|______|______|______|______|______||_______________| *Cutting multiplier for head is believed to change to .80 after beak is chipped. /////////////////////////////////////////////////// ========================= 8a: Brief Explanation ========================= Not only does each wyvern have it's own resistance to status ailments, but they recover from them at different speeds, take different amounts of damage from poison, and stay under the influence of statuses for different lengths of time. Every time you see the poison, stun, or sleep animation when striking a wyvern, you have successfully landed a status "hit". When this happens, you reduce a wyverns "immunity" to that status by the amount listed for the weapon you are using. For a list of how much status element your weapon has, refer to section 4a. When you successfully land enough "status hits" to reduce a wyvern's tolerance to zero, the wyvern is then inflicted with that status ailment. After that status has cleared, the wyvern's tolerance resets to a higher number, making it more difficult to inflict the same status ailment in the same battle. This is done three times for poison and stun, and four times for sleep. Tolerance will not increase any more than what is listed on the chart. If inflicted more times than is listed on the increase chart, the wyvern will continue to reset at the max value listed. What should you know about poison? - Poison is the only status that actually deals damage. It's hardly a large amount of damage but can be useful on wyverns that fly often or burrow. - Poison tolerance resets to the next level the instant you first inflict it. Stun and sleep do not. This means that you can continue to inflict poison status on a wyvern that is currently poisoned. However, poison tolerance cannot reach zero a second time until the wyvern's first poison status has been cleared. However, you can keep a wyvern in nearly a constant state of poison by hitting it enough. If using Poison S, don't let up on the poison shots just because the wyvern is poisoned. Keep shooting them. - Just because a wyvern stays under the influence of poison longer does not mean that it is taking more damage. Monoblos and Diablos stay poisoned for 2 full minutes, but are only taking 2 damage per second. Rathian stays poisoned for only 1 minute, but takes 4 damage per second - the same amount of total damage as the Blos brothers in half the time. - Wyverns recover poison tolerance very quickly: all of them recover at a rate of 10 tolerance every 5 seconds. You have to hit a wyvern with poison constantly if you want it to work. Leaving a wyvern alone for a minute or two can cause it to recover quite a bit, if not all of the poison damage you had been hitting him with. What should you know about stun? - Don't waste your stun shots on a stunned wyvern. Poison is the only status that works that way. You'd be better off switching to normal ammo or something more powerful, as the stun status doesn't reset to the next level until after the status has cleared. - Stun does not have a multiplier of 2x on wyverns. Strangely enough, it does have a something close to a 2x multiplier on minions such as Aptonoths, but I never cared enough to actually test it enough to get an exact value. Wyverns do take slightly more damage, but it's hardly enough to get excited about. Through all of our testing, we consistently come up with a value close to 1.10x, which over a long period of time can translate to a bit of damage. What should you know about sleep? - It's essentially worthless. It has no multiplier (some will argue, when testing YKK with sleep S Lv 2 we consistently come up with a multiplier of 1.017x, which roughly translates to about 16 HP), it doesn't last very long even if your teammates DON'T hit it and wake it up instantly, and weapons that have sleep element hardly do any raw damage. Even Sleep S does ZERO damage. - So what is sleep good for? It hardly lasts long enough to make a difference on egg carrying quests, but it's still fun. Also, if you have the group together, laying eight large bombs out to blow up your sleeping wyvern will deal quite a bit of damage. Other than that, I don't know what to tell you. I generally don't use it unless I'm just messing around or having fun with it. ========================= 8b: Status Tolerance Charts (STATC) ========================= How to read the chart: [Tolerance Increase] -First number is the amount of "status damage" it will take to inflict this particular status ailment. Each number following is what the tolerance increases to after each successful infliction. [Duration] -The length of time before the status ailment clears. [Total Damage] -Poison only. This is the total amount of HP the wyvern will lose by the time the status ailment clears. [Recovery] -Rate that the wyvern recovers from the status damage you have inflicted. Some wyverns recover more slowly than others. ========================= 1: Poison Chart (PCHART) ========================= ____________________________________________________________________________ Section IX: Wyvern Elemental Attacks & Damage / (WYVATK) /////////////////////////////////////////////////// ========================= 9a: Brief Explanation ========================= The player damage formula is a different story altogether. I still haven't figured it out and I doubt I ever will. I've seen a ton of different formulas out there, but none of them seem to work in all situations, so I've scrapped it altogether. The formula that supposedly works for MHG doesn't work in MH, so I've been left wondering exactly what wyvern attack powers mean. I'm not going to list all wyvern attacks here, considering they don't mean much at all without a formula. I will, however, list all the wyvern elemental attacks and how much element they have, so you know what armor to equip when fighting various wyverns. Don't ask me -how much- damage an attack does, because I can't tell you. I can only list the attack powers and elemental powers as I've seen listed in various places. Some of them surprised me, like Cephadrome's fin being water elemental, but fulkth and I did in fact test it with two separate armor sets having the same defense but vastly different elemental resistance, and the damage was in fact different. ========================= 9b: Wyvern Elemental Attacks (ELATK) ========================= Yian Kut-Ku: ____________________________________________________________ | Attack | Raw Damage | Elemental Damage | |-----------------+------------------+-----------------------| | Fireball | 40 | 39 Fire | |_________________|__________________|_______________________| Gypceros: ____________________________________________________________ | Attack | Raw Damage | Elemental Damage | |-----------------+------------------+-----------------------| | Poison Spit | 35 | Poison (Long) | |_________________|__________________|_______________________| Cephadrome: ____________________________________________________________ | Attack | Raw Damage | Elemental Damage | |-----------------+------------------+-----------------------| | Hip Check | 50 | 40 Water | |-----------------+------------------+-----------------------| |Sand Blast (Jump)| 50 | 10 Water | |-----------------+------------------+-----------------------| |Sand Blast(Stand)| 40 | 30 Water | |-----------------+------------------+-----------------------| | Fin Attack* | 20 | 30 Water | |-----------------+------------------+-----------------------| | Flying Attack | 50 | Stun | |_________________|__________________|_______________________| *Fin Attack: Getting run into while Cephadrome is "swimming" in the sand. To calculate your attack increase value, take the class multiplier and multiply it by (3) for Attack Up(Small), (5) for Attack Up(Large), and (10) for Attack Up(Ultra). (Powerseed or Demonflute) SnS Class Multiplier: 1.4 Attack Up(Small): +4 Attack Up(Large): +7 Attack Up(Ultra): +14 Duals Class Multiplier: 1.4 Attack Up(Small): +4 Attack Up(Large): +7 Attack Up(Ultra): +14 Lance Class Multiplier: 2.3 Attack Up(Small): +7 Attack Up(Large): +11.5 Attack Up(Ultra): +23 GS Class Multiplier: 4.8 Attack Up(Small): +14 Attack Up(Large): +24 Attack Up(Ultra): +48 Hammer Class Multiplier: 5.2 Attack Up(Small): +15 Attack Up(Large): +26 Attack Up(Ultra): +52 Bowgun Class Multiplier: 1.2 Attack Up(Small): +3 Attack Up(Large): +6 Attack Up(Ultra): +12 So how do attacks stack, and which ones do? Outside of quest, everything stacks. The inn does not count as "Outside-of-quest", as it gives you the attack up icon next to your name. Powercharm and Attack Up armor skill do not give you this icon. These items will stack with everything. Out-of-quest: (Class multiplier for weapon times the number given) Armor Attack Up(Small): x3 Armor Attack Up(Large): x5 Powercharm(Large): x5 Once inside of a quest, you may select one small OR one large from the list, and one ultra. If you use a small boost and then use a large boost, the small boost will be cancelled. The best choice is to select a large boost and an ultra boost. Inn Attack Up(Small): x3 Demondrug(Small): x3 Select Inn Attack Up(Large); x5 One Mega Demondrug(Large): x5 Powerseed(Ultra): x10 Select Demon Flute(Ultra): x10 One For maximum attack increase, use an armor skill, a powercharm, and large boost from the inn. (Most common example is Meat + Liquor in King Room. This is not Attack +5 as stated in some FAQs, it is [Class Multiplier x5]). Once inside the quest, you may also use a powerseed or demon flute for an added attack increase. If you prefer to eat for stamina and health, then bring along a mega demondrug. This will give you the same attack increase that you would have received from a large boost at the inn. ========================= II: Miscellaneous Item Damage ========================= Stone: 1 Damage. Kick: 2 Damage. Small Bomb: 20 Damage. Large Bomb: 80 Damage. Explosive Rock: 80 Damage. Ballista: 100 Damage. Cannon S: 250 Damage. Lao Dragonator: 255 Damage. (x 4) Fatalis Dragonator: 255 Damage. (x No. of Hits) ========================= III: Traps ========================= Sadly, no multiplier for traps. (Well, again, we constantly get the crap multiplier of 1.017.. which might be enough, after four or five traps to reduce the number of hits to kill a wyvern by one) Reason to use traps? None, really, unless you're new and have yet to learn a wyvern's attacks. Using pitfalls lets you get some free hits in, but a flashbomb is so much easier to make and works just as good, if not better. ========================= IV: What's the deal with bombs? ========================= For some reason, bombs do various damage on different minions when using them on HR13+ missions. Bombs can be used offline and online HR1-12 to easily calculate HP of different enemies, but HR13+ is a crap shoot. Same goes for kicks. The good thing is that weapon damage is constant, and always works out correctly. ========================= V: Hitzones ========================= Don't like the layout in this FAQ for hitzones? I also have an RTF file of the hitzone and elemental resistances chart located on my webspace at http://lord-grahf.tripod.com/mhtable.rtf Should be a bit more clean and perhaps more printer friendly than the chart here. /////////////////////////////////////////////////// / Section XI: Questions and Examples / (FAQEX) /////////////////////////////////////////////////// ========================= I: Frequently Asked Questions ========================= 1)"I read that a clust 2 does 1000 damage. That would kill a YKK in one hit. You must be wrong." Those numbers for bowgun damage were created by Sanjuro333 as a way to calculate Fatalis HP. However, those numbers were based on the idea that a weapon with 900 attack power actually does 900 damage when swung, and we all know that's not true. Although the numbers were a good estimate for a very long time, his numbers simply are not compatible with these formulas. There are numbers for bowgun ammo which are available, but the formulas are too complex for even I to decipher. They involve what type of bowgun you are using, how far from the wyvern you are when firing, the placement of the shot, the number of times the bullet hits, and other things as well. The numbers listed in the guide for a Clust 2 bullet reads: 6 Initial Damage 32 Bomblet Damage (x4 Bomblets) 2 Fire Damage (For each explosion) As you can see, this may not make perfect sense but it definitely is not 1000 damage. If you can figure out how the gun calculations work, send me an e-mail any time or better yet, make an FAQ of your own. :) 2) "I read that Eternal Strife has 630 Dragon! Your numbers have to be wrong because that would kill a Rathalos in like 10 hits!" For the most part, MHG's elemental damage is listed as ten times as much as MH elements. This is because MHG's elemental damage is figured up a completely different way than the original version of Monster Hunter. If you read somewhere that ES has 630 Dragon, or Gatling Lance has 410 Fire, or Trident has 240 Stun then you are looking at numbers for Monster Hunter G. In almost all cases you will get the correct value if you divide by 10. However, some values were changed completely. 3) "I play on the EU server and I just tested __________ and it didn't work! What am I doing wrong!?" None of these numbers have been tested on the PAL version of Monster Hunter. One can assume that nothing was changed between the US and PAL versions, but I cannot say for certain. If you come across something that doesn't work, there may have been an adjustment made. If you find any differences between the US and PAL versions I can always add another section. 4) "How come you say the poison cloud doesn't do damage? Sometimes it kills a vespoid instantly, but you don't have it listed. Why? Status effect "animations" from your weapon don't do any added damage. Vespoids die instantly from poison (occasionally) as a built in special case. Vespoids explode upon death and are uncarvable, but the creators of Monster Hunter wanted to make vespoids easy to carve with a poison weapon. Proof that the poison cloud or stun animation don't do any added damage? Take a Deathprize and run to the baby Aptonoth in Forest and Hills area 1. -Do a blocking attack, then kick the Aptonoth to death. If you didn't get a stun animation when you hit the Aptonoth, it will take 19 additional kicks to kill the baby Aptonoth. If you DID get a stun animation when you hit the Aptonoth, it will STILL take 19 additional kicks to kill the baby Aptonoth. Take the Poison Battle Axe and do the same thing. No poison cloud? Takes 17 additional kicks. Poison cloud? Still takes 17 additional kicks. ========================= II: Examples ========================= \\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \ Example I: \ \\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Winglocking offline Yian Kut-Ku with Grayburg (2-Hit locking) is not possible without a powercharm. However, when you put a powercharm on, YKK can be two-hit locked. Don't believe me? Try it yourself. The equation to prove it is as follows: Stagger Limit: 100 HP ATP: 483 TYPE: .28 SHARP: 1.125 HITZONE: .75 CLASS: 2.3 DEFENSE: N/A (Offline, 1.0) [483 x .28 x 1.125 x .75] / 2.3 = ~49.61 Damage. Two hits is 99.2 Damage, which is not quite enough to winglock. However, equip a powercharm and... ATP: 494 TYPE: .28 SHARP: 1.125 HITZONE: .75 CLASS: 2.3 DEFENSE: N/A [494 x .28 x 1.125 x .75] / 2.3 = ~50.74 Damage. Two hits is 101.48 Damage, which is enough to winglock. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \ Example II: \ \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Headlocking(3-hit) offline Rathalos with Aqua Spear+ and powercharm is possible. However, trying this on a regular online Rathalos doesn't work. Why? Because online wyverns have 5% more defense. Proof? Equation is right here, and try it yourself. Stagger Limit: 100 HP ATP: 263 TYPE: .81 (.23 + .28 + .30, 3-Hit lock [Up, Down, Down]) SHARP: 1.125 HITZONE: .8 CLASS: 2.3 ELEMENT: 22 (Three hits, total of 66 Water) ESHARP: 1.0 ELMZONE: .30 DEFENSE: N/A [263 x .81 x 1.125 x .8] / 2.3 = ~83.36 + [66 x .30] = 19.8 Total Damage = 103.16, More than enough to 3-Hit lock Rathalos offline. Online, however.. ATP: 263 TYPE: .81 (.23 + .28 + .30, 3-Hit lock [Up, Down, Down]) SHARP: 1.125 HITZONE: .8 CLASS: 2.3 ELEMENT: 22 (Three hits, total of 66 Water) ESHARP: 1.0 ELMZONE: .30 DEFENSE: .95 [263 x .81 x 1.125 x .8 x .95] / 2.3 = ~79.19 + [66 x .30 x .95] = 18.81 Total Damage = ~98, Not enough to 3-Hit lock regular Rathalos online. \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \ Example III: \ \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ Rathian can be one-hit locked with an RDS and powercharm online, using either the unsheathe attack or the overhead smash attack. Two people with an RDS and powercharm could take turns hitting Rathian with an RDS and lock it to death using single hits. Go ahead and try it if you'd like, but here's the equation as proof: Stagger Limit: 100 HP ATP: 984 TYPE: .48 SHARP: 1.125 HITZONE: .9 CLASS: 4.8 ELEMENT: 33 ESHARP: 1.0 ELMZONE: .35 DEFENSE: .95 [984 x .48 x 1.125 x .9 x .95] / 4.8 = ~94.64 + [33 x .35 x .95] = ~10.97 Total Damage = ~105.61, More than enough to stagger Rathian with one hit. /////////////////////////////////////////////////// / Section XII: Disclaimer, Acknowledgments / /////////////////////////////////////////////////// Acknowledgments: - Anyone who was unfortunate enough to be dragged along on our hours of testing.
